Slappy to NY: Love Me Or Goodbye (Maybe)

Alex Rodriguez, yesterday afternoon, on WFAN:
At some point either New York is going to say, 'I've had enough of this guy, get him the hell out of here,' and we have an option, or New York is going to say, 'Hey you know what, we won a world championship, you had a big year, you're a part of it, we want you back,'. I also want to make sure that from the fans [and] management that I'm wanted here.
Slappy backtracked a few hours later:
Those questions were an absolute dog fight for 15 minutes. I was basically doing the best I could for 15 minutes. They were pretty crazy questions. I felt like I was under the gun. The bottom line is I want to be in New York 100 percent. ... The last thing I'm going to do is run away from New York and say New York is too tough and I'm going to go.
Rodriguez is due $27 million per season from the Yankees in 2008, 2009 and 2010, but he has the option of becoming a free agent after this season.

Slappy should really take a page from The Book of Manny -- and keep his yap closed.

That's one thing he's clearly incapable of doing. He needs the fans to love him, and he can't stop trying to talk them into it.

From the Vined Smithy said...

He can't win. The media will get on him if he doesn't talk (like they do with Manny).

A large number of the fans will not love him unless he hits .330/.450/.600 (unlike Manny, who the fans seem pretty good with).

He's screwed until he hits a pennant-clinching come-from-behind 2-out-homer in the bottom of the 9th.

That won't even help......
Because that is what they believe he is supposed to do....Whatever he does it will always be just a little to late....

I heard that interview on the fan yesterday.......It was uncomfortable.....

Jeter was on today and you just see the difference no excuses , cocky and confident....Never prefaces a statement with I.....A-fraud did that alot yesterday...when he realizes it is not about him he will then maybe receive some relief........until then he is free game...

The thing with Manny is he doesn't speak all that well as it is....

A-fraud thinks he is Tony Robbins .and people someday are going to buy his tapes and learn how to life the A-Rod way.....

Yankee fans don't even argue for him anymore ....I think they dislike him more than we do...

No. That would do it.

"No. That would do it."

Not if they go on to lose the World Series.

Jere, lives here in the east. He knows what i am talking about...They are relentless on A-rod..........He will be a cub next year....

I lived in New York City for 22 years, and in the suburbs of New York City for 20 years before that. I was a Yankees fan for 28 years.

Jere and I can disagree, but we both still know what we're talking about.

I agree that Yankees fans will be relentlessly on Rodriguez. All I said was I think a pennant-winning clutch hit would change that, because their memories are very short-term.

By the way, where did you think Redsock and I were from?

From the Vined Smithy said...

PS I live in NYC.

Jere may be right, though, that A-Rod's status as "true Yankee" might hinge completely on his doing well AND the Yankees winning it all.

It could be.

Also, though the fans may warm up to him (which is what I meant), I don't think Alex will ever be considered a true Yankee. Too much animosity has built up. Plus the media will never sell him that way.

L-girl All I meant was that we hear and see the media all the time ..I don't really care where you where for 20 years .I just know where you are now...... and when I said this "He knows what i am talking about..."

It was meant as an east coaster would say it and not that anyone didn't know what they were talking about............

Allright so stop thinking everything I say is some personal attack....

Whoa 9Casey, I didn't think it was an attack, and I didn't take it that way. Not in the slightest.

I was merely pointing out that I am also from the east coast, just like you, just like Jere.

I was surprised that anyone would say "Jere's from the east coast, he knows what I mean" when talking to other people who were also born and raised on the east coast and lived there all our lives.

I don't really care where you where for 20 years .

You said "from the east coast". That's why where I lived all my life - where I am from - is relevant. It's certainly relevant when talking about the Yankees and Yankee fans.

I just know where you are now......

Check your map. Toronto's not exactly in the west, either.

In any case, it was meant as clarification, nothing more. I didn't feel attacked and wasn't attacking back.
