G72: Red Sox 2, Padres 1

Matsuzaka overcame a very rough beginning -- he walked the first three Padres and threw a wild pitch -- but rebounded to pitch six respectable innings (6-5-1-5-9, 127).

San Diego got a run in the first on Michael Barrett's bases-loaded single, but that was all the offense they could muster. After the first inning, the Padres got only three runners as far as second base. Besides Dice's nine strikeouts, Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon each whiffed two in their one-inning stints.

The Red Sox bunched four of their eight hits in the fourth inning. Dustin Pedroia opened the frame with a single and after David Ortiz flied out, Manny Ramirez, Kevin Youkilis and Jason Varitek hit safely, giving Boston a 2-1 lead off Maddux (6-7-2-2-2, 91). (box)

Paul SF over at the always-entertaining Yanksfan vs. Soxfan looks at the Red Sox's recent slump (such as it was) and puts it into historical context.

Check it out if you are not afraid of numbers!

Edes says outfielder David Murphy had been called up (taking G38's roster spot) and is available in SD and Kason Gabbard will start on Tuesday.

Lowell's injury must be worse than they thought?

I heard strange rumors it might be something different than his thumb.

allan said...

It's also a good time to rest him.

Without the DH, one of Lowell, Tiz or Yook has to sit. So why not give him time to really heal?

Red Sox wearing 1984-style uniforms -- no names on the back!!!!

After the first pitch, the SD TV guys say they have never heard so loud a crowd -- even for playoff games. Lots of Sox fans.

Crowd cheering Coco's SB like it's Fenway.

Another out, only 25 to go.

Down 0-1. I'll take it.

wow, flithy slider to end the inning: K, F8, K.

The pads don't have a 300 hitter on their team, and only one guy is close.

But they can pitch....

I hope Beckett-Peavy lives up to its billing.

Dice at 81 pitches thru 4: 32-13-27-9.

Be nice if he could get two quick innings and go 6.

20 pitches brings him to 101 thru 5.

I'm enjoying the asthetic of 80s night. And while I usually don't much care for west coast games, when I'm on a show schedule, I think they're pretty darn cool! Got down from the spot perch around 10:30, subway home and I actually get to watch a game! (Without stealing a peek at the sling feed on my phone which is taped to my script!)

i'll watch tiz and manny -- then can they have a 20 minute delay while i drive home from work?

Hmmm... I'll see if I can work some long distance weather magic for a freak rainstorm, but I'm not promising anything!

Way to K, Dice!

Got home as Lopez was beginning the 7th.

Bit of a gift on that 2-0 pitch to Gonzalez.
