G131: Red Sox 11, White Sox 1

Sexy Lips allowed only two hits over six innings for the second start in a row.

Commenter mikelove says it's the first time (since 1957, maybe earlier) a team has swept a four-game series while scoring 10+ runs in each game. Boston outscored the White Sox 46-7.

The Red Sox lead the Yankees in the East by 7.5 games. New York finishes up against the Tigers tomorrow night, then heads home for Tuesday's showdown.

***

Julian Tavarez (5.01, 90 ERA+) / Javier Vazquez (3.66, 125 ERA+)

Hi, Javy! It's been a while since 2004, but we remember. And we thank you.

In 23 career AB againat Vazquez, J.D. Drew has hit .391/.440/.870.

Interesting 'toid that means next-to-nothing:
Vazquez is trying to become the only pitcher in the Major Leagues to record at least 10 wins, 30 starts and 150 strikeouts for the seventh straight season. He needs five more starts and three more strikeouts to extend the streak.

That's the other thing. For people that supposedly hate what you're doing, they seem to drop by quite a bit.

trollzapper said...

Hey, you said not to talk about "her"!!!

i know. i have no self-control!

SoSock said...

Nice Shot Keilty!!
Seriously guys, these announcers suck. I don't know if any of the rest of you are watching on WGN - I've never heard any announcers sound so depressed when the opposing team does something big.
It's like listening to Eeyore from the Pooh cartoons

trollzapper said...

it's wmtc all over again :)

Jere said...

Will he be a Yankee Kieller, though?

allan said...

Tim left a great comment this morning in yesterday's game thread:

"I remember a day not too long ago when the Yankees were beating up on basement dwellers with scores reminiscent of the first three games of this series, while we still played decent baseball against decent teams.

Remember when we were told to heed to the warnings of the big, bad, unstoppable Yankee run machine pummeling all who stand in its path?

Yeah. I remember."

So:

When Boston beats up on last place teams, it's no big deal because those teams suck.

When the MFY beat up on last place teams, it's a HUGE deal, because they are a juggernaut storming into first place.

Rob said...

Isn't this amazing? Bobby Kielty...That position on the roster used to be occupied by one Wily Mo Peña.

trollzapper said...

That's amazing. 7-1 before we hit 200 comments.

a new way of counting runs!

Jere said...

I've stuck with WGN. It is comical. They don't want to be there. But you gotta think Hawk is secretly happy for the Red Sox. (Even though he just called us "the Yankees" by mistake.)

trollzapper said...

smart boy, that tim. canadian, too.

Mike L said...

Totally agree with DO-can't believe no one's worn a fastball yet this series. If I were a gambling man, I'b bet on Bukvich plunking whoever's standing in front of him with 2 outs.

allan said...

That's amazing. 7-1 before we hit 200 comments.

There would be a few more if we weren't moderating (though they'd all say the same thing).

We estimate that this afternoon Barb has sent more than 35 comments straight into the JoS trash. So far.

allan said...

But you gotta think Hawk is secretly happy for the Red Sox.

I don't. I've heard him call games.

He's like Fox News covering Bush.

Jere said...

If we win today, the zone is 4 to 11. Games up AFTER Yankee series.

trollzapper said...

Outwardly happy for who signs his paycheque, secretly happy for nobody.

Joe Grav said...

Why did my comment not get approved?

Let's try this again:

Our magic # is soon to be 25.

Jere said...

maybe a little? secretly? deeeep inside when he thinks about '67? okay, maybe you're right....

allan said...

Javy Being Javy - lots of K against us, but also lots of baserunners (but today, they scored).

trollzapper said...

Joe Grav, it didn't get zapped. It must have gotten Bloggered.

Rob said...

6 strong innings from Tavarez. You wanna talk about someone who's been important to the Red Sox this season...

Jere said...

we'd have to get the lead up to about 13 to clinch at Fenway vs. the Yanks. Let's shoot for that!

Joe Grav said...

Oh, never mind, it made it in. My bad.

For the record: I hope this comment moderation thing is only for the next few days due to the battle with the Yankees. I don't think it's totally necessary - we don't have an unstoppable rash of inappropriate comments here.

trollzapper said...

hawk harrelson is the biggest homer in the business. no way he roots for anybody but his mortgage. that's my take.

trollzapper said...

I don't think it's totally necessary - we don't have an unstoppable rash of inappropriate comments here.

that's because you don't see what we're not allowing in. there were hundreds, and they were highly inappropriate. they would have completely swamped and shut down the thread.

Rob said...

I just hope we get Dave O'Brien on the radio for the Yankees series. Glenn Geffner is giving me a headache. :\

allan said...

There were a few HBP yesterday. Where there warnings before the game?

Jere said...

The "them" and "us" really shouldn't be allowed by play-by-play people. Eckersley, okay... but the actual people calling the game should at least pretend to be....oh, forget it.

I always forget how annoying Hawk is til I actually get to hear him.

Rob said...

Well I'm just glad you guys didn't keep on with that "Team Members Only" bit. I'll take the moderation.

trollzapper said...

dave o'brien? the manny hater? or is that someone else?

trollzapper said...

yeah, team members doesn't work. i lobbied strongly against it. for one thing, it discriminates against newcomers.

Rob said...

Jerry Remy: He [Hawk] takes the losses so hard.

Ofer said...

In moments like this you just have to ask: who are you, Julian Tavarez?

Jere said...

After the Yankee series, it's 2 series' each against Bal, TB, and Tor (with one home Yankee series amongst those). It really looks like we're in good shape.

trollzapper said...

hopefully once the sox clinch the division we won't need moderation any more.

trollzapper said...

"who are you, george costanza?

i'm the opposite of every guy you've ever known..."

Rob said...

I don't think he's a Manny hater... I haven't notice. But think of this: Professional play-by-play man? Or a notecard-reading, falsetto boy, speed talking, corporate yes-man announcer?

trollzapper said...

maybe i'm thinking of someone else. someone who is still ripping manny for a ground ball he didn't leg out in 1997, or 99, or whatever...

Jere said...

"What a magnificent day...for anything." --Hawk

Rob said...

I don't care if he hated Manny or not. At least with Obie on I don't have to turn the radio off in the middle of the game.

trollzapper said...

Nothing pisses me off more than MUMS. But I've only heard the speed-talker once or twice, so I can't say.

Rob said...

Hawk: Hey, Ozzie.
Guillen: Hey, Hawk.
Hawk: Let's go get drunk.
Guillen: Yeah.

Jere said...

L was asking about O'Brien in the first place, not Geffner.... I think.

trollzapper said...

where's our guy with the mdc crush...?

Jere said...

Nobody ever answers this, but I'll ask one more time: Doesn't Geffner kind of remind you of the announcer in The Natural?

Rob said...

Nasty pitch, eh?

Good job Other Manny!

trollzapper said...

i can't answer because i don't know geffner well enough and i don't like that movie, so only saw it once. sorry.

Rob said...

I've only seen The Natural once and I don't remember either, sorry. But hey... 7-1 lead going into the 8th inning and Joe Castiglione's back at the mic. Life is good.

Mike L said...

Could anyone in broadcasting have read that Charlie Moore promo with a straight face? Just amazing copy...

Rob said...

I'm thinking Gagné and Papelbon today to get them work in front of the off-day.

Mike L said...

I guess maybe Hawk at about any point during this weekend could have pulled it off...

trollzapper said...

a big fish should come along and use charlie moore as bait

Hmm. Was it 2003? I know someone was angry at him... Well that's one good thing about O'Brien, when you think about it... him and Joe aren't bashful about giving criticism if it is due. If it's a terrible play, they'll call it as such.

But in general I don't think there will ever be any perfect announcers. Everyone's got their flaws, I guess.

Mike L said...

Trollzapper-you have the added advantage of having Casino's up there too.

Betting on wait times at Disney World isn't quite the same...

trollzapper said...

the ground ball he was complaining about last time i heard him was pre 2000.

true, no announcers are perfect, but we each have the things that irritate us. MUMS drives me nuts.

Rob said...

This is where you can really have a perfect day. If Gagné has a good inning.

trollzapper said...

there are plenty of casinos in the US, no?

Don and Jerry have successfully made me want hot dogs for dinner. guess I've gotta run to the supermarket when the game's over.

Casinos are pretty much just in vegas and atlantic city. Other than that, it's not legal unless it's on an indian reservation (foxwoods, mohegan sun, etc.) or there's a special local law passed.

trollzapper said...

you know, i've approved several comments that didn't show. tim, are you around? did you just post something?

There are a LOT of "Indian" casinos though.

I'm from NYC so to me it seemed like they were everywhere - NJ, CT - both sides. There are also the riverboat casinos, casinos all through michigan, lots of places, it seems.

Rob said...

Didn't occur to me to check the glossary. But once I know what an acronym stands for (One time my best friend said "bbiab" in an instant message--be back in a bit)... I rarely forget, which is always nice.

trollzapper said...

the catskills are getting one now. we spent a lot of time there, it breaks my heart that they're doing that.

just checked in, was out having a life... I see my Carmine Hose are about to sweep the pale variety. And, lovely to say, the Tigers edged the MFYs. Ah, sweet schadenfreude.

On another topic: MLB.TV is carrying the WGN hi-def feed. The picture looks so, so nice on my laptop screen in wide format. Things are quite a bit sharper also. They should carry the NESN hi-def feeds too!

trollzapper said...

that's why mike l's comment didn't make sense to me...

trollzapper said...

mike l, we're not canadian (yet). we've been here two years.

almost exactly two years! aug 30 05

Mike L said...

i guess i've just managed to find a dry spot casino-wise...

Rob said...

There's a town in Massachusetts that's looking to get a casino. I think it's Marshfield, but I'm not sure.

There was a big vote on one a few years ago for a casino about 5 miles from where I live in Kittery, Maine. You want an issue that can deeply divide a group of people, throw a casino at them.

tim said...

Good, myers on.

Four 10+ run games will be nice.

Ofer said...

Bukvich just couldn't end this game without doing something ugly.

Spencer Brown said...

There's a bunch of non-Indian-territory casinos in Louisiana and Mississipi. Drive down I-10 sometime from Beaumont to Mobile. Nothing but casino billboards. Some of them got wiped out by the hurricanes 2 years ago, but they are back and stronger than ever.

trollzapper said...

But, like you said l-girl, it probably works out for the best both for my wallet and my marriage!

I was about to say that!

Allan and I are both addictive personalities. I'd be a wreck. I can't even be trusted at an auction.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

With San Diego giving up 14 runs to the Phillies today, the Red Sox, if they hold CWS to 1 run, will be tied with SD with 515 RA - the lowest in the majors. The difference is that the Red Sox have 694 RS - 4th best in the majors to the Yankees, Tigers and Phillies - while SD has only 576 RS, tied for 24th (with only STL, SF, ARIZ, CWS and WASH lower). Truly an amazing season.

trollzapper said...

You want an issue that can deeply divide a group of people, throw a casino at them.

yup - especially when all the other jobs are gone...

Jere said...

"looking to get a casino"

I think just about every town, that doesn't have one, is.

Jere said...

The LA and MS are the riverboat ones, right?

Rob said...

There was a large town-meeting about it. Things got very heated [casino in MA] and the town ended up voting it in. But the state still needs to approve it.

Jere said...

8-1!

Fall River/New Bedford also currently going through casino-mania.

trollzapper said...

There was a large town-meeting about it. Things got very heated [casino in MA] and the town ended up voting it in. But the state still needs to approve it.

yup, it's the same story everywhere. MA has an advantage w/ the town meetings.

upstate NY it got very, very bitter, too. very protracted fight - with donald trump trying to keep the casino out, to protect his atlantic city interests! strange bedfellows indeed.

trollzapper said...

how did run #8 score?

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

8-1!

Heh. Gamecast is on serious delay, then. Still have 7-1 here.

Jere said...

Do a google news search for "new casino" and see all the different areas involved at any given time.

Spencer Brown said...

re: catskills casino

There's already a huge casino-resort complex called Turning Stone up north of the Catskills, on the NYS Thruway at the Oneida exit (west of Utica, east of Syracuse). I grew up right near there and still have family there. It's owned by the Oneida Indian Nation.

see http://turningstone.com/

my gamecast updated, but i have no time to follow it :)

Rob said...

Dropped it! Wow. There's #10!

Jere said...

Myers does his job vs. Ortiz. Left fielder doesn't. 10 runs again! We tie the June 1950 mark, 4 in a row.

Joe Grav said...

double digits. again. this is awesome

Jere said...

ooh, I'm switchin to WGN! complete silence.

Spencer Brown said...

unbelievable. White Sox errors lead to the 4th consecutive ten-run-plus game for the Red Sox.

tim said...

Wow, I called that one. :-)

And they say Manny's shitty in LF. Wow.

trollzapper said...

hm, i don't call turning stone catskills. this is much further down, sullivan county, near monticello.

Jere said...

11-1!!!!

Rob said...

First time in Red Sox history (according to Red Sox radio) they've scored 10+ runs in 4 games in a row.

Joe Grav said...

For the record, I f***ing hate Ozzie Guillen, so this gives me great pleasure.

Jere said...

so now we have to see if we've ever had 5 10-run games in a row.

trollzapper said...

oops, you didn't call it catskills either, i read that wrong, sorry.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Only 2 more runs to go (13 for the game) to pass Philadelphia and be 3rd in the majors in runs scored...

Rob said...

I guess it isn't the first time then, for 4 10+ run games in a row.

Jere said...

Hawk, at some point you have to just laugh. It's better for you. Remy would be laughing right now if we were down 10.

Joe Grav said...

Papelbon?

mikelove said...

Per B-R, 7 other teams have scored 10+ runs in four games in a row, and 1 did it five games in a row. But assuming we do in fact win, it'll be the first time a team has ever swept a 4-game series while scoring 10+ runs in each game.

Spencer Brown said...

this is a riot -- Papelbon is out there with a 10-run lead in the 9th... not because they need him, but because they haven't had to use him the whole series.

White Sox announcer just said, with a sigh, "we've been outscored 46-7 in this series."

Rob said...

Pap's getting an inning in to tune him up. Especially with the off-day tomorrow.

Jere said...

okay, assuming the win now, we're either 7 or 8 up going to Bronx. If 7, we win 1, we're still 6.

If we win two of three, we're up either 8 or 9 after the series, which pretty much puts a fork in them division-wise, with only 3 more head-to head.

Jere said...

mikelove, thanks. I'm gonna use that stat if you don't mind.....

tim said...

Just went through this thread and saw the quoting...I'm jus sayin, thas all!

Ending my statistics rant, our RS/RA differential, at 183, and nobody else is even close. The MFY are 2nd with a differential of 157. In 3rd place are the Angels with a differential of 73, followed by NYM (65), SD (61), and CLE (57). To me, that differential is an extraordinary stat. And first to 80 wins!

Ending my statistics rant

Never thought I see this group of words here! Rant away!

mikelove said...

Small correction, actually, I was only searching since 1957 so I'm not sure if it's happened before then. The other 8 4+ game 10+ run streaks since 1957:

5 games:

ATL versus SD and STL, 7/14/06-7/18/06

4 games:

ATL versus ARI and HOU, 7/29/07-8/2/97
COL versus NYM and MON, 4/30/00-5/3/00
SEA versus TOR and CHW, 4/14/00-4/18/00
DET versus SEA and CAL, 7/28/96-8/1/96
COL versus LAD, 6/27/96-6/30/96
ATL versus PIT and COL, 7/24/93-7/27/93
PHI versus MON and CHC, 8/11/77-8/14/77

So it's only been done once against a single team (the 5 game series was 3 against SD and 2 against STL), and they lost the third game of that series 10-13.

allan said...

I was at Game 1 of the 2004 DS in Anaheim, with Schilling on the mound. It's starting to look like there may be a rematch, although who knows at this point (although coolstanding's 99.8 POF probability emboldens me to say this). If there is, I'm headed down the coast to the big A. Jus' sayin.

Huge attendance at the annual town meeting (a process I love) and the slots were voted down. The race track is overgrown with weeds and the towns moved on to other development issues, but I don't see a casino in the berkshires anytime soon.
