G132: Yankees 5, Red Sox 3

Distance to the RF pole at Yankee Stadium? 314 feet. Distance of Johnny Damon's two-run, tie-breaking home-run in the seventh inning? 315 feet.

New York got two runs in the first off Dice, the second on coming on a double by Jorge Posada. After that hit, Matsuzaka retired 12 of the next 13 batters -- and the Red Sox tied it up. Manny Ramirez hit a solo shot to right in the second and Julio Lugo tripled and scored on David Ortiz's fly ball to left in the third.

The teams' captains traded solo home runs (Derek Jeter in the 5th, Jason Varitek in the 7th) before Damon gave the MFY a 5-3 lead.

Facing Joba Chamberlain in the 8th, Kevin Youkilis walked and, with two outs, Mike Lowell singled. But JD Drew fanned against the Hut. Mariano Rivera set down Varitek (K), Coco Crisp (K) and Lugo (L4) in the ninth with a problem.

This was a game the Yankees had to win -- and they did. Nothing to do but brush this one aside -- which is easy, knowing it's August 29 and we have a seven-game lead -- and get ready to humiliate Fat Billy tomorrow.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.76, 120 ERA+) / Andy Pettitte (3.69, 116 ERA+)

Stats 'n stuff.

Laura, if you scared someone off with enthusiasm, they probably didn't belong to begin with!

(Thanks for modding, btw.)

Gameday says MManny left with injured back : (

allan said...

old question, but i want runs against both hut and fruitbat.

laura k said...

My pleasure, thanks for thanking me. :)

That's not the full story, of course. Allan and I were both pissed off about fair-weather fans. People were giving up and we were ragging on them, saying they weren't real fans. This pissed her off royally - she hasn't been back since.

So you're right. She probably didn't belong!

Amy said...

Was Manny's back bothering him before the game? I thought I heard someone say he had some tightness. Or did he injure it during the game?

Rob said...

I'd like to see some questions pop up on Joba the Hut. Score a couple of runs off of him. Humble the boy a little bit.

laura k said...

anyone feel like getting some PIZZA??

allan said...

PIZZA THE HUT!

he prays harder than schilling.

thatdietcokegirl said...

prayer on mound: just stop. kthx.

Ron said...

I'm glad you two were ragging on people about the doom and gloom. Needed to be said.

laura k said...

not a lot of prayer-on-mound fans here at joy nation.

allan said...

GG!

Rob said...

Lead-off walk... Power vs. Power.

This is the Show.

Amy said...

OK, a walk! Good start. Let's intimidate the kid.

Ron said...

I like the prayer on the mound think, but only when it's immediately followed by a line drive over the center field fence.

laura k said...

remy: jobber

allan said...

time for a cookie?

Rob said...

Hinske for Kielty. Not sure I support that, but whatever. Short show.

Ron said...

Damn, there I go again with the typos.

SoSock said...

Love the Spaceballs reference
Makes me smile almost as much as Yook getting the L-O walk

s1c said...

Since 2003 the Sox have split 88 games with the Yankees. 22 wins at Fenway and 22 Wins at Yankee stadium.

However, in aug and sept the Yankees lead the series 15-12.

laura k said...

typos are fine - just no misused apostrophes :)

Rob said...

Have to admit... That was an impressive 3 pitch K. But Hinske's been living on the bench. We'll see how Lowell does.

allan said...

hinske had no clue. fuck.

time for joba to see the doctor.

Ron said...

Come on Dr.

Do your thing.

Amy said...

Remy impressed with Jobber

Ron said...

That'll do pig. That'll do.

allan said...

time to be a hero, werd!

Rob said...

Drew up with 1 out. Not sure about the faith thing, but I'm hopeful.

Rob said...

0 for 21, 7 K at Yankee Stadium for Drew.

s1c said...

Ok J.D. this is your time. Your chance to freaking win the fans over. Come on buddy, I am tired of freaking defending you. Get a FRAGGGING hit will you!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

prayer should be a private, behind-the-scenes thing. it's ridiculous how they stand there and pray. SAYIN ;P

SoSock said...

Sometimes I think there is no one as vital to the offense as Lowell is

smithnyiu said...

Yaaaay, Drew is up with the game on the line. Yaaaaaay.

laura k said...

also: praying for your hit or your K? even if i believed in a god, i'd think she'd have better things to do!

Rob said...

Drew's taking close pitches. But he's not swinging.

laura k said...

now all the drew haters can say "see I was right". cuz that's what's most important.

Amy said...

Hate to return to my frustration with Drew, but....

SoSock said...

SHIT
Drew is making it VERY easy to not like him

allan said...

still got the 9th!

...

and no worse than a 7 fucking game lead tomorrow!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

right on lg.

Rob said...

Blah. That certainly hurt. I'd like to see Drew hit 9th, try playing a little small ball when he's up... He's the slumping guy right now. When Pedoria was slumping, he hit ninth. When Lugo was slumping, he was moved to 9th. At least put him 8th if the lineup dictates it. I really feel bad for J.D. though. He's a very quiet, reserved guy who's trying real hard to get it going, but when you're in a slump, you're in a slump.

Well, its tuesday so that means that once again I have to catch the last innings on the Radio. Time to go pick up b-fly from dance class.

Check back later!

allan said...

giving the mfy some false hope is fun.

laura k said...

bye s1c, you can listen to our 9th inning comeback on the radio

thatdietcokegirl said...

honestly, do we win or lose:

Rob said...

Tiger Woods sighting.

I wonder who he roots for.

laura k said...

Nike. Or Buick.

Rob said...

Kielty left with an injury. I was wondering what the deal was. Lower back soreness.

Ron said...

giving the mfy some false hope is fun.

Wow, that's the best silver lining I've heard in a long time.

SoSock said...

Might be it for Delco

allan said...

Silver lining?

7 GA on August 29.

(if we lose)

Rob said...

I don't care who you are--Optimist or Pessimist--but it's very concerning to see both Manny and Kielty go down with injuries. Luckily it wasn't anything terrible, it appears, but it may throw a wrench into the next few games.

Rob said...

Props to Delcarmen. Down 3-0, comes back for the K.

Enter Sandman.

allan said...

we have no idea if either is serious. could be simply precautionary for both.

thatdietcokegirl said...

giving the mfy some false hope is fun.

agreed :)

SoSock said...

Big K by Biteme

Rob said...

It sounded precautionary for Kielty. Not sure about Manny.

Amy said...

So will Francona put in a pitch hitter for Drew?

laura k said...

If we get to Drew this inning, we're gold. (He K'd to end the last inning.)

Amy said...

I must be tired...did I say pitch hit? pinch hit. sorry

Rob said...

Varitek: 3 for 3 this year against Rivera.

Amy said...

Like I said, I am tired. I thought I heard Remy say Drew was up third. Maybe he is tired also.

Ron said...

re: silver lining: If we lose, the silver lining is false hope to the MFY fans. They aren't going to catch us. So the hope is false and I will enjoy it until we pummel them tomorrow.

Ron said...

Varitek: 3 for 4 this year against Rivera

Amy said...

yes, let's leave them hoping for what they can't have. remember 2004!

allan said...

varitek swings at a pitch he had 0% of hitting.

ococ?

SoSock said...

Fruitbat??
Never mind - I'll check the glossary after the game

Rob said...

Whether we win or lose... Go Mariners!

SoSock said...

If you can believe Gameday - those strikes are barely so

laura k said...

well, not a fun way to start the series, but you know what i always say...

I LOVE A SEVEN GAME LEAD ON AUGUST 28.

Amy said...

I can't wait to see Beckett beat Roger.

Sarah Haendler said...

Well, 7 games is still just fine with me. Honestly, I think the Mariners fans are probably more disappointed by us losing than we are (or should be)!

allan said...

do you have any idea how much i want the sox to knock the living fuck out of billy tomorrow? ... i don't think you do.

Rob said...

Still tough to see the Yankees beat the Red Sox. Before the series you think, well, if the Sox win just one they'll still be 7 games up. Sounds so simple, but it's still painful to see the Yankees coming out of the dugout after the last out rather than the Red Sox.

thatdietcokegirl said...

i don't. haha.

man, would have been nice to win the opener, but it really doesn't matter.
(it doesn't, right?)

*switches to roddick match*

ciao all! xo

FUCK YOU SHITHEAD ASSFUCK MORONDICKVUNTDOCUHE GUMP

...

where was i?

Ron said...

See everyone tomorrow!

SoSock said...

Couldn't agree more with wanting to humiliate Billy Boy. He's WAY too smug about his place in the world

Jim said...

Cheap-ass Damon homer. Joba looks like he partook of the University of Nebraska special NFL farm team diet just for good measure. Still, unless Torre pulls a Fletcher Christian, we'll only see the Hut for 3 of the next 54 outs. Kick Fat Billy's ample ass tomorrow. Hope Manny is ok, I don't remember any back spasm history. More fodder for the hatahs.

Sarah Haendler said...

G'night gang. See you tomorrow for Fat Billy's well deserved whuppin', right?

Rob said...

After 1 inning in Seattle...

Los Angeles: 0
Seattle: 5

Rob said...

Strange looking night for Kason Gabbard and the Rangers... They're tied 3-3 in the Bottom of the 7th.

Gabbard: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, (2 HR) 91 pitches (56 strikes).

Mike Wood came on to pitch for the next 2.1 innings.

Rob said...

Crap day. Back at it tomorrow. Goodnight, everyone.

s1c said...

Got back in time to Catch Terry's take - RE: Manny, worried about the back, could be a big problem. Kielty has been having periodic problems ever since he hit the wall in his first game at Fenway. Sounds more precautionary than anything.

MFY - I hate losing to the Yankees, I just hate it!!!

♊ - Morbid and creepifing I can handle as long as we do it quiet like.

allan said...

Good night.

Hold those thoughts.

Jackie said...

So you're right. She probably didn't belong!

Apparently not. All I was trying to say in that post was that I was turned off by the way you (and redsock, to a lesser degree) constantly and (I felt) disproportionately attacked people - not even me! - for saying things that (I felt) were well within the realm of normal, loyal fan reaction.

I guess I was hoping that if I pointed it out rationally you might think "yeah, maybe we do come on a little strong/gang up on people sometimes, I can see how that would be bothersome, maybe we should tone it down a bit". That didn't happen, and that's obviously fine - it's your blog and you can run it however you want.

As I said there, I do like the site a lot - and obviously I still read occasionally (today's visit to the comments can be attributed to the Sox v. Yanks series; those always increase my Sox blog consumption)... but you're right, I'm not sure I "belong". Which is also fine. There are lots of blogs in the sea, and many of them also have highly entertaining game threads. I'm just flattered that you noticed my absence.

Anonymous said...

"do you have any idea how much i want the sox to knock the living fuck out of billy tomorrow? ... i don't think you do."

Ohhhhh, believe me when I tell you I most certainly do.

laura k said...

I'm just flattered that you noticed my absence.

Jackie, I did notice your absence. You are (or would be) an excellent addition to the community.

I'm glad you came back to explain the issue further from your POV.

I understand what you're saying, and I'm sure it seems pigheaded - or at least silly - not to just say, sure, I'll tone it down.

I do let many of those types of comments go, I don't argue with everything I disagree with, just like (I assume) none of us cheer every single comment we like.

But some things drive me nuts, and I can't honestly say if the scene was repeated that I'd do any differently. It's an emotional reaction that I feel free to express here, because I know the owner of the blog feels the same way (and often expresses it in much harsher tersm than I do).

At another site, if most people were doing the "it's over" thing, I might write one short post countering it, then disappear. I wouldn't have the same comfort level.

That's one of the reasons I like it here.

I don't want my attitude or comments to drive anyone way, but I also recognize that no blog can be all things to all people. Obviously if significant numbers of long-time posters were leaving, we'd know something was wrong. (And hopefully they could give us some constructive criticism on their way out the door.) But a lot of people seem to be happy, so I feel it's not a problem.

I hope you'll join us in future game threads, you are most welcome to. Either way, enjoy September and October!

Joe Torre announced after the game that Mike Mussina is to be demoted to the bullpen to work out his recent struggles. I find that interesting, because of how long Mussina's been a starter. Seems like it'd be a bigger adjustment to move to the bullpen for a starting pitcher than to just adjust on his current pitching.

Ian Kennedy will be called up to make (at least) one start. At least it's better for Mussina going to the bullpen rather than being designated for assignment.

And how did this happen!? Seattle shelled Ervin Santana for five runs in just 1/3 of an inning, knocking him out of the game, and yet, they lose. Los Angeles came back at the M's and Jeff Weaver for 5 runs in 4.1 innings.

The two teams were tied after 7 innings, 6-6, when Brandon Morrow coughed it up big time. 2 hits and 2 walks leading to 4 runs in the 8th inning, and that was the final score. 10-6.

Seattle falls to 4 games behind the Angels and is just 1 game ahead of the Yankees in the wild card.
