G146: Red Sox 16, Devil Rays 10

Devil Rays - 040 410 001 - 10 18 1
Red Sox - 001 436 20x - 16 20 0
Down 8-1, the Red Sox rallied. And then some!

***

Andy Sonnanstine (5.73, 80 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (4.39, 104 ERA+)

Wakefield has pitched 19 straight scoreless innings against Tampa, dating back to July 27. ... On August 21, Boston battered Sonnanstine for eight hits and seven runs in five innings.

The Yankees are in Toronto tonight: Hughes/Marcum. The Tigers (3.5 GB in the WC) host Texas this afternoon.

Appliance doctor is here to make an emergency visit, meaning over $300 to fix the damn refrigerator. BUt we have no choice---thing is filled with food for Rosh Hashanah. So you think the Sox have problems?

Rob said...

Sweaty walk. And heeeeere's oCoC!

laura k said...

yookitude! and we're loaded again.

thatdietcokegirl said...

toronto has no game against wonderboy 5+ era huges wtf.

Rob said...

Someone has a chance to win a car here. Fourth batter in the 5th hits a grand slam, someone wins a new car. Heh.

laura k said...

Hey, you gotta have a fridge. $300 is less than the cost of food poisoning.

David said...

joe magrane on rays tv says the rays are teasing the red sox into thinking they can get back in it.

Rob said...

Well, no car. But a run will do!

Can I haz more!?

laura k said...

How bout we score a run w/out giving up an out, eh?

nick said...

in play, run(s)!!!!

Amy said...

Maybe the tide is turning now that I am back? Only three run gap! How did TB score all those runs? Why is everything in italics? Is this some alternative universe of JOS?

nick said...

oh. a sac. still. I like the positive excitement even with the losing score. yooo-ha.

allan said...

thanks for the migraine update, david!

Amy said...

YES

laura k said...

David said...

redsock, no problem. down here in tampa it's all i get.

Rob said...

YOOOOOOOK!!! It's great to see these guys be agressive!

allan said...

no dongs, but a couple of nice sacs.

David said...

a few innings ago he was giddy that the rays would pass the orioles tonight and climb out of last palce

Rob said...

Yep! Large sacs.

Rob said...

Birthday boy up.

laura k said...

Birthday boy hacking.

Rob said...

and Birthday Boy down. But that's okay! Just have to keep the Rays from scoring.

allan said...

Memo to Tampa Bay announcers: Never get giddy about anything.

thatdietcokegirl said...

can the bullpen plzzz have a 1-2-3 inning?

s1c said...

Yep, italics only in internet explorer.

The sox need to hold them this inning.

laura k said...

Now we'd BETTER win this game, it will be too annoying if we don't!

Rob said...

Memo to Tampa Bay announcers: Never get giddy about anything.

Except maybe their AAA club. They're in the playoffs! (Durham Bulls and their Blue Monster.)

SoSock said...

no dongs, but a couple of nice sacs.
Jeez, I thought I'd checked into the wrong thread there for a moment.
That was a nice inning, tho. Glad to see us still working.
BTW - I like Lugo MUCH better in the 7 or 8 spot. Just my opinion :)

laura k said...

Worst name for a pitcher ever! Grant Balfour.

His cousin's name is Joey I. Giveuphomeruns.

L is telling me about new posts and I keep refreshing in Firefox and nothing is coming up. After refreshing 3-4 times.

Hanging up, long hourglass times, frankly it sucks for me right now.

SUX.

laura k said...

Ish, you are really up on the minors, eh? That's cool. Can't imagine how you have time for it, but it's neat.

David said...

ish, actually 3 of 4 rays minor league affiliates are in the playoffs

tim said...

Wow, I leave for 15 mins and we're almost there! Keep them dongs and sacs coming!

SoSock said...

Nice, Corey!

Rob said...

FANTASTIC TURN on that double play by Pedroia!!!

It would take a fool to discount defense for rookie of the year. Perhaps the other leading candidate for rookie of the year grounds into a double play. Take THAT.

SoSock said...

Woo Hoo!
Just what the Doctor ordered!

laura k said...

Great play. Grrrreat.

i think it's cuz i deleted my post ;)

SoSock said...

You know. You hear the old line about the guy who turned the great defensive play having a good at-bat if he leads off the next inning so often you get sick of it. - But DAMN if it isn't so often true

thatdietcokegirl said...

WOW, I should really stop watching...whenever I go away, good things happen.

magical fan alert! ;p

laura k said...

there's off-topic and there's off-topic. tim's post is as off-topic as it gets.

this off-topic post brought to you by the slow, clunky, overloaded-with-useless-features firefox

Amy said...

I am really feeling better. Nice to see the bats working again.

Rob said...

BALLS ON THE WALL. The Good Doctor delivers again.

laura k said...

You hear the old line about the guy who turned the great defensive play having a good at-bat if he leads off the next inning so often you get sick of it.

These days people mostly say it sarcastically. Like "how often does that happen, the guy who makes the great play comes up 3rd in the next inning and walks?"

Amy said...

Drew...keep it going.

SoSock said...

And now for the new and improved JD Drew - brought to you by Extreme Makeover - Season 2

laura k said...

Sosock, that's a reality show I just might watch.

Amy said...

Drew at least having a good long at bat.

Rob said...

Fastball after fastball after fastball, then a curve, and Drew stayed with it and fouled it off. He's seeing the ball very well right now it looks like.

thatdietcokegirl said...

good swings too.

tim said...

way to battle, drew-r

laura k said...

Next pitch Drew has an official long at-bat.

SoSock said...

By God - he's fighting!

thatdietcokegirl said...

fahhhhhhhhhhhk foul ball. looked so good off the bat.

laura k said...

ahhhh, thought that was a double, just a foul. "new piece of lumber for drew" says don.

Amy said...

So I finally got to check the box score...can't believe it was 8-1 at one point. Go Sox! Nice comeback.

laura k said...

Nice AB!!

Rob said...

What an at-bat. I'd call that one his best AB of the season right there.

Amy said...

Walk to load them. I am actually starting to think Drew may be coming around.

tim said...

ahhhh, thought that was a double, just a foul. "new piece of lumber for drew" says don.

You must be ahead of me on MLBTV. Right as he said that, I read it. Twas crazy!

s1c said...

Frag. He broke his two hit bat. TG he drew the walk, get it drew!!!!

time for youuuuuuk dong!!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

youk homers here.

allan said...

drew fouls off 6 pitches and then takes an obvious "balfour"

tim said...

Well ALRIGHT! I think we're about due for the Sweaty Dong.

SoSock said...

laura k said...

"can't believe it was 8-1 at one point."

yes, it looked dismal.

damn, baseball is crazy.

Rob said...

This Youk Triple brought to you buy Wrigley's new Triple-Mint gum. Triple your flavor, triple your fun!

tim said...

can't believe it was 8-1 at one point.

The way I saw it at that bleak time...if it could happen to us last week with our 100 million dollar man on the mound, we can damn well do it to TB.

YOOOOOOOOOOK!

SoSock said...

BIG :)

tim said...

Damn, I wanted to see an inside the park dong (2 in one year for yook - would have been amazing)

laura k said...

Yook should be sponsored by Secret or Dial.

laura k said...

Whoo-hoo! 13-9

Amy said...

Baseball is crazy. We once listened to a non-Sox game on the radio (can't remember the teams, but it was about four years ago) where a team came back from something like a 13 run deficit. It might have been the Indians or Tigers. Some Midwest team.

NICE. 13-9

Rob said...

oCoC!!!!!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

tim said...

Whoo-hoo! 13-9

Fuck sakes, I saw that post before the pitch that Crisp hit to make it 13-9!

Damn u slow mlbtv.

SoSock said...

Ribby for OcOc

thatdietcokegirl said...

amy, yah it's nuts. i remember like last year or something the phillies (or the cards?) came back from 11 runs down or something in the 9th, to win it! insane.

laura k said...

Amy, you're not talking about the famous Seattle-Cleveland game, are you? It was the biggest comeback in baseball history. If you google it, there's a Wikipedia page on the game.

Amy said...

OK, trivia question to which I do not know the answer: What is the largest deficit any team has ever overcome to win a game?

SoSock said...

Tim - I'm in the same shape with GDGD (goddamn GameDay)
Saw the Woo-Hoo post before the pitch showed up on screen.
Oh well, better than nothing at all

Amy said...

That must be the game, L-girl. I thought it was the Indians. I will look for it on Wikipedia because I know the date, roughly, was in August, maybe 4-6 years ago?

David said...

Redsock, I believe he just said Delmon Young is the obvious choice for ROY.

laura k said...

august 5 2001, i think allan has the details

SoSock said...

Damn guys - 2 straight 1st pitch swings with fresh meat on the mound.
Discipline, puhlease!

Amy said...

August 5, 2001, that's the game. It was my birthday. We had driven to Maine to see friends and somehow got the game on some distant radio station that came in clearly and heard the whole comeback. It was the best non-Sox game I had heard since Seaver's 19 K game in 70 (I got it right this time, Redsock---19, not 20)

Rob said...

L's BOYYYY.

laura k said...

"I will look for it on Wikipedia because I know the date, roughly, was in August, maybe 4-6 years ago?"

Very good! August 5 2001.

allan said...

Three teams have come back from 12 runs down:

1911 Detroit Tigers
1925 Philadelphia A's
and Cleveland on August 5, 2001

SEA 048 020 000 00 - 14 17 0
CLE 000 200 345 01 - 15 23 1

No team has ever come back from 13 runs down to win a game.

s1c said...

and the hits and the runs just keep on rolling.

Rolling, rolling, keep those doggies rolling.

brought to you by carmel by the sea mayor.

SoSock said...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe -
That was Laura's Boy!

tim said...

Niiiice Lyndon.

Multi-dong inning for DP?

Amy said...

Apparently I tend to add one to every baseball memory I have---12 run deficit, not 13. 19 Ks for Seaver, not 20. Thanks, Redsock, for keeping me on my toes. But I am likely one of the more senior posters here, so forgive my bad memory.

tim said...

Heh, there was a couple seconds where the score was 9-11 (when Lowell came in on Yook's triple and Drew was at third)

s1c said...

Redsock, I believe he just said Delmon Young is the obvious choice for ROY.

I hate to bust his bubble but the Sox have the next two ROY's locked up.

laura k said...

Amy, that is so cool, what a lovely picture that brings up.

I love driving somewhere, on a long road trip, or coming home late at night, tuning in to some distant game, getting caught up in the excitement.

Plus your birthday and an amazing game. Great memory.

Amy said...

Now THAT was a good half inning.

allan said...

TBD: 040 410
BRS: 001 436

fuck yeah!

laura k said...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe -
That was Laura's Boy!

You are correct, sir!

I was busy commenting and modding, I forgot to say:

THAT'S MY BOY!!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

now if toronto could just score 8 in the 9th. that would be the cherry on my sundae :)

laura k said...

thanks for saving mdc's arm!

SoSock said...

It's hard to believe I got home in the middle of the 5th and we were down 9 - 4, and the 6th has just ended with us up by 5. No wonder it seems like I've been watching the whole game

allan said...

why would anyone give up on these fuckers?

8-1? please.

laura k said...

So often by the time a game ends, it feels like a completely different game than the one you started.

That didn't come out well, but maybe you know what I mean.

Amy said...

I like your thinking, Dietcokegirl. But I will also be happy to keep the 5 game lead in tact.

Rob said...

MDC comes in throwing GAS. 96-97.

Rob said...

6 fastballs... And then the hook.

allan said...

thatdietcokegirl said...

I like your thinking, Dietcokegirl. But I will also be happy to keep the 5 game lead in tact.

oh me too. for sure! i'll still enjoy my sundae, cherry or not ;D

Amy said...

By the way, was there any report on whether Wakefield was injured or did he just not have the knuckler working tonight?

tim said...

But I will also be happy to keep the 5 game lead in tact.

Remember when there were MFY fans waving around four fingers at a beloved Joy poster (whose name escapes me)...It appears that those same four fingers are still waving a month later.

Rob said...

MDC comes in throwing GAS. 96-97.

Better than sniffing it.

Navarro just sniffed some gas just now.

Rob said...

Yankees win.

Amy said...

Nice try by Dusty! He has spunk, as Lou Grant would say.

laura k said...

Yeah Tim, that's 9Casey I think. He hasn't been around lately but I'd love to hear what his friends are doing now.

allan said...

MFY scored 9 runs on 11 hits.

Spooky!

Rob said...

Wakefield was injured or did he just not have the knuckler working tonight?

I wouldn't be surprised if the back tightened up on him, but he was getting absolutely smacked around today.

One more out, please, MDC.
Don: Tampa Bay not going quietly.

laura k said...

Lou Grant :)

thatdietcokegirl said...

tim said...

Amy said...

Phew, I thought I might be dating myself there with the MTM reference. :)

Rob said...

Yeah Tim, that's 9Casey I think. He hasn't been around lately but I'd love to hear what his friends are doing now.

That doesn't surprise me. He certainly always has a retort for something, it seems.

thatdietcokegirl said...

mdc looks like he's growing a beard. maybe just not shaving...

(oh jeez here comes god bless america)

Amy said...

Strange rendition of God Bless America...all tenors? Or was it my TV?

thatdietcokegirl said...

wow, the pats videotape-cheating scandal is scandelous.

tim said...

I love how NESN shows Schilling for half of this, probably with a stiffy in his pants for GWB.

laura k said...

nice tim :)

Rob said...

Strange rendition of God Bless America...all tenors? Or was it my TV?

I thought so too. But I'm sure I couldn't sing it better than they could.

s1c said...

MDC is a new papa. Not sure if you saw that but his wife had a bouncing baby boy either yesterday or sunday. So, he's probably been to busy to shave.

tim said...

wow, the pats videotape-cheating scandal is scandelous.

*whispers* we're not allowed to talk about that here! but yeah, i only heard a little bit about it, probably will watch the sportscenter segment about it to get caught up on it.

laura k said...

it's gba that helped push me away from the yankees. i couldn't take all that military-pseudo-patriotic crap at the stadium anymore.

thatdietcokegirl said...

nope, amy i used to watch MTM on nick-at-nite all the time :))

allan said...

I love how NESN shows Schilling for half of this, probably with a stiffy in his pants for GWB.

And yet I don't think he'll in much of a hurry to drive Gehrig to the recruiting office.

I know...I'm a digg-er so no need to explain...no need to worry though, I'm a student. Will check it out next commercial break...the title does sound promising though.

another blast upton gives up on that was catchable. hits low on Cf wall.

nick said...

look at 'em chalking up the hits. even cash is over .100.

Rob said...

This is incredible, isn't it? The Red Sox were down by 7 runs going into the bottom of the third, and now they're AHEAD by 7 runs.

I knew they had a good chance of coming back, but this is icing on the cake.

tim said...

At this point I am like, save some for tomorrow and the weekend guys!!!

Especially Friday! haha

thatdietcokegirl said...

it's getting to be like that at fenway (or it is already) with the relentless (usually crap) renditions of gba + military/patriotic nonsense.

figured you'd know, Tim, but an acronym like NSFW is best defined.

Gotta get me to a tv.

SoSock said...

Wow - Tim man comes in and I don't even feel nervous! Cool

Rob said...

Bryan Corey in line for the win for the Red Sox.

Amy said...

"Oh no, it had nothing to do with that. More involved."

I have only been to Yankee Stadium once, and it was before 9/11, so I wouldn't really know, except for the games I have seen on TV.

laura k said...

it's getting to be like that at fenway (or it is already) with the relentless (usually crap) renditions of gba + military/patriotic nonsense.

that's a shame. it's bad to see everyone succumb to it.

interesting choice of words: renditions :/

i won't post a link, but if anyone is interested, i wrote about my experience sitting down during GBA, it's linked on my blog under "a sit-down strike"

don't be shocked, i refer to myself as a yankees fan :)
