G147: David Ortiz 5, Devil Rays 4

WALK OFF!

The days are getting shorter, the evening air is getting cripser. David Ortiz knows it's gettin' close to playoff time.

After Lester allowed four runs in the first, Flo got three back in the third with a dong into the bullpen. Then, with Lugo on first, he whacked a second tater to right field in the bottom of the ninth to win the game.

Snuffer get his first win of the year!

And "Brian the Red" wins the Walk-Off Book Contest.

***

Edwin Jackson (6.00, 77 ERA+) / Jon Lester (4.47, 102 ERA+)

Runs scored in last three games against Tampa Bay: 1, 0, 16.

It looks like the four AL playoff teams are set: Boston, New York, Cleveland (6.5 GA) and Los Angeles (9.5 GA).

Yankees (5 GB in East, 4 GA in WC) at Skydome: Mussina/McGowan. Can the MFY win their seventh in a row with Mussina, who has allowed 20 runs in his last 9.2 innings?

lead-off walk.

Sky's the limit.

David said...

Easy to get tickets, but the rays bump the ticket prices up when the red sox are in town. I'll be there on Sunday the 23rd. $38 for a ticket that is regularly $22.

allan said...

migraine says there have been a lot of 3-2 counts tonight.

sox have had 3 full count in 37 batters.

rays have had 4 in 41.

is 7 in 78 batters a lot?

andy said...

yes but I paid $800 for tix to the Sd games. I could pay the royals box office prices and get better tix. I have the angels here and that is sold out early on as well. in KC i get 3 good games every year.

laura k said...

that's a drag, but $38 still sounds decent. much cheaper than fenway. of course, you're not at fenway.

andy said...

pedroia walk off

Time for some of that Popeye magic is right, Remy.

Let's just hope he got the spinach I prepared for him in time.

allan said...

andy said...

lechuga just came to mind for some reason i even googled it after i posted

Rob said...

This is where you certainly miss Manny. Just him looming on deck.

laura k said...

tim said...

sorry, God.

He doesn't mind. He hit that HR!

Amy said...

You read my mind, L-girl. See my prior post which I did before I saw yours.

tim said...

HUGE win....let's hope they're jacked for this series this weekend, HUGE series.

laura k said...

the poor pup better get used it to it, cause in october, we'll be screaming and jumping around every other day!

Amy said...

Nothing like a walk off to raise the spirits. Two great games in a row. Are we stoked for the Yankees?

Rob said...

Dave Trembley just went bonkers in Baltimore! Heh, a little tirade out on the field. He threw one of the umpires out of the game.

Jim said...

PAPI!!

Delmon Young channels Wily Mo. Tampa Bay announcers hilarious in their ineptitude trying to describe the whole thing. Fuck both of them and the goddam BJ's, too. Sox will have to do it themselves over the weekend.

laura k said...

hey woti! the walkoff brought out the crew tonight.

it brought out a few others too, but that's what moderation is for :)

allan said...

Papi didn't nail Reyes in the nuts, but that'll do.

Jim said...

The other funny thing is Papi saying in today's paper how the offense was doing a lot without him and Manny this year, unlike last year. Not tonight.

laura k said...

this game started out so boring i was falling asleep. two comeback wins in a row!

andy said...

a fucking walk off homer is like eating chocolate cake while doing a ball girl

Joe Grav said...

oh big papi, you are so damn good

laura k said...

andy, i guess it doesn't get much better than that

andy said...

5 rib-eyes tonight and all were eaten by Flotizzle

Some Guy said...

Is that the sound of the giant waking up?

w000t!!!

tim said...

Alright all, time to go nurse the spinach wounds - feeling a lot better now though!

Let us enjoy what the off day brings us - for some, it may be a quiet evening without our friends LBJ and Big Papi, for others it may be waking up at 4:30 am Friday to drive to Buffalo for a 7am flight to mothafuckin' BAHSTON for G148 - Petite Tits and Dice-K! I'm pumped, son!

Anyway time to plan tomorrow. Night all!

As Tim walks away into the darkness, he whistles the Popeye theme, forever grateful for the walk off win the spinach steam gods have bestowed upon Boston on this very eve...

Rob said...

Papi didn't nail Reyes in the nuts, but that'll do.

I'd take a walk-off dong than a shot in the dong any day.

laura k said...

Tim, have fun!! Don't forget, you are representing Joy Nation. So drink a lot and act real stupid!

andy said...

Lets go Spinach
Lets go spinach

andy said...

Tim dont forget to hit on the ball girl

allan said...

who rules our world?

Maybe a sign for Joy Nation?

REPRESENTING JOY NATION

laura k said...

spinach, the official vegetable of joy nation!

andy said...

well let the emotion that is all around the game tonight subside and decide tomorrow on who rules our world

allan said...

spinach, the official vegetable of joy nation!

ugh.

(I was voting for snickers.)

andy said...

a nice five ounce rib-eye and a side of spinach

laura k said...

Maybe a sign for Joy Nation?

REPRESENTING JOY NATION

That would be very cool. But don't forget the URL!

Amy said...

Good night all. Now that the New Year has started off so well, I can digest my dinner and njoy knowing that we will still be in first place no matter what happens over the weekend.

David said...

just curious, why were you getting the rays broadcast tonight?

laura k said...

Yeah, happy new year everybody :)

andy said...

is manny back?

andy said...

is it safe to say that tonight's win was Kosher?

tim said...

Yeah, I'm still lurking here.

Tim, have fun!! Don't forget, you are representing Joy Nation. So drink a lot and act real stupid!

Damn you lack of being 21....I'll have to stock up on sunflower seeds then.

And I'll wager a bet on Venganza.org, Allan ;-)

allan said...

i gotta start printing t-shirts.

laura k said...

just curious, why were you getting the rays broadcast tonight?

We don't live in the Boston area. (or in the US, for that matter.) We watch on Extra Innings, the baseball cable package. Sometimes we get NESN, sometimes the other team's feed.

laura k said...

is it safe to say that tonight's win was Kosher?

I think it's safe to say. But we could ask Yook, just to be sure.

andy said...

you should make some bumper stickers sock. I see a few Sox license plate frames around here I would slide a sticker under their wiper blade. expand the fan base a little

andy said...

Youk on tonight's kosher game, "You gotta be shitting me!"

David said...

right, canada. i started thinking that if the Rays broadcast was some type of national game they might have toned the homerism down a notch. thanks.

andy said...

pedroia on tonights game, "Fucking holy shit fucking god dammit cock sucker mother fucker piece of shit fucking whore!"

allan said...

so ... more comments after the game than during the game!

laura k said...

he has such a way with words

allan said...

"Fucking holy shit fucking god dammit cock sucker mother fucker piece of shit fucking whore!"

Can't be Pedroia. He wouldn't use the non-obscene word "of".

andy said...

Sexy lips on tonights game, "I'd do her."

laura k said...

good night joy nation! enjoy the day off, see you all on friday for the first of three ass whoopings.

andy said...

Tek on the game, "Please just cheer for me next time."

andy said...

i saw that l girl
i'd do her

tim said...

I'm still here, haha...had to watch the highlights on TSN again...they showed the walk off dong as called by D.O.

Just wanted to point out that Delmon Young is a complete idiot. He so could've caught that.

Rob said...

sexy lips was very good tonight, too. don't forget that!

laura k said...

don't forget andy, i hold the power of delete :)

have a good night, sweet dreams of your ball girl, with or without chocolate cake

allan said...

Lips: 3 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 1 K.

Colin said...

Well I'll be damned. Looks like our offense came through again. Good job Sox and good job Tavarez. Figures when I'm not checking on the status of the game that they start coming back...methinks I now know what I have to do to ensure the Sox ftw.

Rob said...

Dating tips by Jim Rice on Sox Appeal.

Haha.

tim said...

Lips: 3 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 1 K.

"I'd hit it"

Rob said...

I'm having a hard time watching Sox Appeal. I end up switching channels, but then I get curious and change back.

Rob said...

They did the wave.

I'm changing the channel for good.

allan said...

And so to bed.

Ron said...

Wow, references to the the flying spaghetti monster. Joy Nation is getting so culturally rich. We should have off day and off season threads every day to discuss philosophy, religion, politics and the finer points of making the Kansas school board look foolish.

Nice dong last night, I went to bed exhausted but happy!

Brian the Red said...

Because of an early start for today I actually went to bed after the 8th. A very nice surprise this morning when I checked the scores.

When I saw how it ended, I thought to myself, hey, I had a September date in the Walk-Off Contest on the Joy Of Sox...and I was a winner. Took the edge right off not winning the $30 million in the Powerball drawing.

laura k said...

We should have off day and off season threads every day to discuss philosophy, religion, politics

But membership would have to be highly restricted :)

laura k said...

Don't worry, Colin, you're not that powerful. None of us are, except David Ortiz. You could try not giving up on them. You know, watching the whole game.

laura k said...

I forgot to ask last night:

WHAT'S OUR MAGIC NUMBER?

Zenslinger said...

The magic number is 12.

I've been on the East Coast and in/near Boston the last couple of days. I could not fit a game in (though I did see Genesis do a great show). But my brother was at his first Fenway game last night, so I'm glad he had this experience.

laura k said...

Excellent timing for Brother Slinger.

Rob said...

Yesterday's game in Miami between the Marlins and Nationals was probably the low point, visually, all season for their ballpark. There was an estimated 400 people in attendance at the park during the game which saw the Marlins beat the Nats in 12 innings. 400 people! That's it!

What's worse? The announced attendance was 10,121.

Knew I should have picked my b'day for Papi's walkoff. Dammit!
