G148: Yankees 8, Red Sox 7

There are people who think baseball is boring.
Yankees - 000 101 060 - 8 12 2
Red Sox - 011 302 000 - 7 13 2

Time of Game: 4:43
It was more than a bit odd that while Okajima melted down, Tito had only Papelbon up in the pen. Especially, since he went straight to Timlin in the 6th to put out a fire.

Jeemer came in with a 5-2 lead in the seventh and a man on base. Francona was managing the pen exactly right -- bringing in the best guys with the game on the line, completely ignoring what inning they have been "assigned" in the past. But he should have had another arm up -- MDC or Gagne -- alongside Bot.

It doesn't sound like Francona talked about this too much in the post-game interview (according to commenters). On a surface level, his explanation makes sense -- who would expect Jeemer and Bot to give up six runs before recording an out? Anyone wanna bet how long it'll be before that happens again?

But considering his decisions to call on with Timlin and Okajimna, I expected Francona to not be caught with his pants down in the eighth.

Lineups are in comments.

***

Andy Pettitte (3.78, 115 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (4.44, 103 ERA+)

"I'll fill in for him if necessary."

Ha, and I just remembered who it is. Nix33 and 9Casey haven't been gamethreading lately.

Make them pay, Slowell.

laura k said...

slowell :)

cmon mike. reinforce my man crush.

nick said...

Tek burned his hand steaming spinach. As a result of that his ability to sign pitches has been dearly compromised. The pitching staff have been carrying the game for him. They're troopers, I tell ya.

Amy said...

I always complain about men LOB but I am not a guy.

OK, so the quote was not about Tek and Dice K.

Can we score some more runs here?

laura k said...

aw go on, bray, just have a regular old crush :)

thatdietcokegirl said...

lol @ this dude.

Jere said...

Watching Giambi eff up makes me laugh unendingly.

laura k said...

ha! papi safe at 1st b/c of the great fielding of hgh

"man crush" (not a not-gay reference)

HOLY FUCK! those guys are topnotch! their defense is our best offense.

allan said...

give it a rest, veras.

face the doctor.

allan said...

GIAMBI!!!

hahahahahahahahahah

god he sucks at first.

hahahahahahaha

Unknown said...

but l-girl, don't you see, mike es muy macho!! even with that fly out. i am too far gone!

allan said...

inning should be over --

cash 'em in o'neill jr.

nick said...

but remember the game in NYC where HGH was a freakin' gold glove winner.

Amy said...

Yankee fan husband says Giambi is done. He's not laughing. I am stifling mine.

Unknown said...

u go lugo!

laura k said...

bray, i think lowell is a fine choice, es muy guapo, un hombre verdad, that's why i say, go ahead and have a crush. no need to have "a man crush".

YOUK!

laura k said...

yooooooooook

6-2!!

Unknown said...

man crush just feels good to say.

Unknown said...

YOUOUUUOUOOUUUUUOUKKKKK

nick said...

completely man-crushy, of course, but lowell is a dude. That's pretty much what I wanted to look like as an adult; instead I end up as a bloated youk.

laura k said...

well if it feels good...

allan said...

great replay by nesn -- ball doinks off hgh's glove, then he falls forward on his stomach trying to get the ball as it rolls away from him.

yook being yook.

bye bye veras -- next victim pls.

Rob said...

So glad to see Giambi with his gold-glove caliber defense!

Sutcliffe and Dusty were bashing Lugo for stealing third. There was no throw! A-Rod didn't even charge the base! And yet, they said that was a bad play. There was no point. Well, you make it a LOCK for Lugo to score on a bloop to center rather than a potential play at the plate. Would he have scored from second? Probably, but he had a 100% chance of scoring from third. Idiots.

laura k said...

henn, on both the animal team and (for the non-vegetarians) the food team. some steamed spinach to go with that henn?

laura k said...

RBI hit from Drew and everyone safe!

Colin said...

Drew redeems himself again!

Jere said...

allan said...

DREW -- ON FIRE, FOLKS!!!!

yook outdekes slappy at third!!!!

That's pretty much what I wanted to look like as an adult; instead I end up as a bloated youk.

There are many more bloated yooks in the world than there are mike lowells, lookswise.

Got to spend the first half of this game with my MFY-loving grandmother-in-law, listening on the radio. By the fourth inning, she looked like she wished she could still chain smoke.

Amy said...

I will be atoning for all the mean things I have said and thought about Drew all season.

allan said...

don: "they elevate and varitek chases, 1 and 2."

laura k said...

espn is recapping the hgh e's

Amy said...

Oh, good, someone else who has to watch/listen to the game with a loved one from the dark side. Hi, Phrenille.

Jere said...

"There are many more bloated yooks in the world than there are mike lowells, lookswise."

allan said...

Schadenfreude!!!

allan said...

Is Bruney the Nazi?

laura k said...

i did it for, what, 18 years? i'm glad to have left that part of my life behind.

nick said...

that's a great image, phrenile.

I first picture on of those classic pointy-topped wooden radios over a doily-draped table with the grandmother-in-law leaning forward in her rocking chair looking meanly perturbed. reality probably a bit different.

Jere said...

Yes, Bruney's the Nazi. The Goose! (stepper)

Benjamin said...

It's a twenty-five year old hand-held transistor radio, but otherwise that's pretty much spot on.

nick said...

jere said...
"Have you been to the DMV?"

I don't get the reference. is it another of one of those seinfeldisms you all enjoy so much?

allan said...

lopez in for timlin

Rob said...

Bruney is right there with Rudy Seanez for Players Least Likely to Pick Up Chicks team.

allan said...

now what's his deal? he's actually a nazi, right? tattoos or something?

Rob said...

Phillies beat the Mets in 10 innings... That game started at 7:05 also. We're in the top of the 7th.

Unknown said...

are we gonna see gagné?

Rob said...

And DETROIT is leading Minnesota 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th.

Amy said...

"i did it for, what, 18 years? i'm glad to have left that part of my life behind."

Ahh, but you were the one on the dark side! BTW, I really liked your post about why you saw the light. I want to make my husband read it, but not right this minute. I will wait for a more neutral time. Not that I think the politics of it will outweigh his 50+ years of Bronx-dom (he was born there, lived there til college, and worked at the stadium---hard to get over that.

Jere said...

Has a "maltese cross" on his inner left arm. Says it's for strength. That's what Hitler said, too.

Do you realize a sweep puts the magic # at 5?

laura k said...

oh poor yankees, they were tired from getting in so late. "their play reflects that."

allan said...

twins down 4-2 -- batting in the bottom of the 8th.

SoSock said...

GOD !!
Here we go with the "late getting in last night" shit
Bring on Jeemer!

nick said...

That's funny. In my second imagining it was a transistor radio, but this time on a chrome-legged kitchen table with a small tear in the plastic seat cover of her old kitchen chair.

Colin said...

Ellsbury says no!

Amy said...

Glad I am watching NESN. No pity for the tired Yankees.

allan said...

oh poor yankees, they were tired from getting in so late. "their play reflects that."

getting in late from the games in japan back in april 2004?

i guess that's why they choked in the alcs. jet lag.

thatdietcokegirl said...

Is Bruney the Nazi?

yes. he's got the maltese/iron cross on his..w/e. baby prolly doesn't even know that it's the celtic, equal-armed cross that pwns it's ass.

whutt.

(did i miss boy-crushes??)

ok man-crushes.

laura k said...

well amy, it was the dark side for me, and i don't see it that way now, either. it was the team i grew up with, the team i loved, they meant everything to me, and it was anything but dark or evil. i know what you mean (of course) but i can't call it that.

and the reasons i switched, those are the things that drove me away, but what really happened was i fell out of love, and fell in love with the 2003 red sox.

i had no choice, no say in the matter. it just happened.

and thanks for reading that :)

Jere said...

Yeah, that first class, hour and a half flight when you've got a game to play 17 hours later is ROUGH

allan said...

yeah - the poor yankees are the ONLY team that has to fly from one city to another and play a baseball game.

wahhhh -- everyone is against them ---- wahhhhh -- they have it so hard --- feel sorry for them -- wahhhhh.

thatdietcokegirl said...

and what will be the excuse when the mfy get their asses handed to them in games 2 and 3?

(shakes fist at sky)

Jere said...

It's so hard to get up for a 7 PM game. The fair thing would've been for us to change it to a midnight start.

Amy said...

L-girl, I think that's the thing for my husband as well---a lifelong love. Mine is just as deep (for the Sox and for him). It just sucks to be on opposite sides. Didn't mean to offend by the dark side reference---just some poetic license, I suppose.

laura k said...

oh wait a sec, amy, i thought you were referring to my "confession" post about changing teams.

the politics of yankee stadium was not the reason. that definitely drove me away from going to the stadium, but it wasn't why i left the team.

i would never, ever, EVER suggest to a yankees fan that it is better to be a red sox fan. that's the kind of arrogance best left to the other side.

Amy said...

"oh wait a sec, amy, i thought you were referring to my "confession" post about changing teams. "

I was. Great post.

thatdietcokegirl said...

it was the team i grew up with, the team i loved, they meant everything to me, and it was anything but dark or evil.

aww :)

laura k said...

Re dark side, I'm not offended. I hear it all the time and I just always dispute it. IMO it's a stupid cliche - even tho everyone here subscribes to it. :)

Rob said...

Anybody have any Joy of Sox sightings at Fenway yet? Did Tim bring a sign? Ah, hell. It'd be next to impossible to see.

laura k said...

Now cue Jere explaining why it is not a cliche, but fact.

SoSock said...

I DID play the Tired Card earlier in the season, on 1 of our west coast trips. Big difference, tho.
IIRC we played a Sunday night game (the latest game played), then headed to Oakland for the start of a long road trip, with no days off anywhere in there.
Absolutely correct about everybody having to do it, tho.

laura k said...

but sosock, the yankees just came from toronto! it's a 50 minute flight.

laura k said...

amy, thank you :)

SoSock said...

Well, I DID say - Big difference.
That's what I meant

Rob said...

Sosock, I agree with ya. That was pretty terrible, the way that was scheduled. Fricken ESPN.

laura k said...

well all, i have work tomorrow, so i'm watching the rest of this WIN without the computer.

enjoy the 6.5 game lead! and the magic number of 9!!

see y'all tomorrow

Amy said...

Damn. I like a 5 run lead. Giambi trying to make up for his errors.

allan said...

so after the sunday night game here, the sox will have to make the yankees' trip in reverse. fly to toronto and play monday night!!!!

OH MY GOD!!!

Amy said...

Goodnight, L-girl. Work on Saturday? That's too bad.

Amy said...

SHIT

SoSock said...

Damn G-man
Baker says no evidence of hurt foot, so I guess the Es can't be blamed on that.
Now they're saying "within Slam reach"

allan said...

WTF Jeemer? You are not jeeming.

nick said...

g'night! I confess that I am fading fast and may have to throw down the computer.

Man.. they are gonna use the bot. I was wondering with a 4...make that 3... run lead they wouldn't want to preserve him.

Colin said...

Wow these ESPN guys really do kiss some serious Yankee ass. Shut up and be fair guys, and "slam reach" is a stupid line.

Damn it Oki...do not fuck this up for us!!

SoSock said...

SSHIT !!
Now they're "within 3-run homer reach"

allan said...

jeemer just teasing 'em.

allan said...

they are also in "six game winning streak against the red sox if this series actually went six games" reach.

Amy said...

Get jeemer OUT of there. WTF?

Colin said...

LEAVE OKAJIMA!

Jere said...

This is the part where the Yanks almost win but still lose. aka Why I get up in the morning.

Dark side= fact, not cliche.

allan said...

Goodnight, L-girl. Work on Saturday? That's too bad.

That's what we do. Work weekends. For the last 8-9 years, actually.

Now up here, I work F-S-S rather than just S-S in NY.

SoSock said...

Wow these ESPN guys really do kiss some serious Yankee ass. Shut up and be fair guys, and "slam reach" is a stupid line.

Amen Colin, and "3-run homer reach" is even worse

Amy said...

I can't believe this. Papelbon to pitch two innings? I am feeling quite jumpy now.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

nervous time

allan said...

bot in when the game is on the line -- the correct way to use your closer.

8th inning? who cares? game is on the line. worry about the 9th in the 9th.

allan said...

he may not pitch 2 innings, but you got to go to him now.

no fucking around. slam that door.

Amy said...

Working just on weekends. Interesting.

Don't tell L-girl that as soon as she left, the MFY hit two HRs.

Rob said...

Strange to bring in the Snuffin' Man here. The best thing the Sox bats can do is pour on a run or two in the bottom of the 8th so Papelbon doesn't need to work the 9th.

2 full innings for Pap. This will be interesting.

Rob said...

I wouldn't mind MDC for the 9th.

Rob said...

Uh oh!

allan said...

did anyone post that the tigers won 4-2?

3 GB in the WC. let's bring them 2.5, sox.

Amy said...

Jeter. Arrggh. DAMN . I am really feeling ill.

Jere said...

Gee I didn't see a horseshit bloop to right by Jeter coming. Put the freakin' shift on the guy!

allan said...

game looking like the season.

we get a big lead, mfy come back, we slam the door and win.

allan said...

well, i hope the season is NOT like this game.

fuckin a.

some outs, mmmm?

Amy said...

MDC in pen.

allan said...

is espn saying the jet lag wore off?

thatdietcokegirl said...

JOHNNY YOU UGLY FUCK. YOU USED TO BE HOT.

Colin said...

I can't believe this shit...I really can't. Thanks Oki...thanks a fucking lot. How did we just blow a 5-run lead?!?!? HOW?!?!?

Rob said...

Gagne can't be available tonight. He would have been in, don't you think? MDC is warming.

This is just... I can't really even fathom what just happened. Okajima gives up a couple of runs... but Papelbon? 4???

Unreal.

Colin said...

AND SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU SYCOPHANTIC ESPN FUCKS!

Amy said...

ONE out. Can we please get TWO more before they score again?

Jere said...

Only the last 2 runs are Pap's, I think.

SoSock said...

Take THAT Zilla

Unknown said...

now we have to face that fucking baby huey.

allan said...

yeah

jeemer allowed 4: 2 hr, dud and noodle.

pap allowed: ci and abreu.

Amy said...

This is just too painful. Try watching with a Yankee fan.

nixon33 said...

WHAT THE FUCK

Jere said...

No baby huey tonight. But when we do face him, it's "get to face him," not "have to face him."

thatdietcokegirl said...

6 runs. no. just, no.

its bullshit.

Unknown said...

this will be a hard weekend for the boys if we lose this way.

Jere said...

It'll have to be our third comeback win in a row.

Amy said...

HOW did our closer and setup guy do this? I am just sick. Finally, a third out. Too little, too late.

thatdietcokegirl said...

yah w/e paps. fuckin moosekiller.

allan said...

i meant charged with when i said allowed.

ragging on jeemer? after what he's done this year??? man.

Colin said...

FUCK YOU GIAMBI YOU SUBSTANCE USING SON OF A BITCH!

thatdietcokegirl said...

i'm lighting boston on fire in like--now.

allan said...

it's gonna be sweet to win by battering joba the cunt.

don't touch that dial.

Rob said...

This one's not over, remember. 6 outs left. This is Fenway against the Yankees. Don't you dare count this one out.

Papelbon and Okajima blowing up? Yes, that's a horrible concern, and there's really no explanation for it. They both just had terrible nights. Not to mention the good yankee hitting. They hit some really bad pitches, but they also hit some good pitches.

So you shut the past out and realize you need to get 1 run now. And then another.

Unknown said...

ok. thinking good thoughts! let's do it!

Amy said...

I like your attitude, Redsock. It makes me feel better...a bit.

allan said...

6 outs to get 1 or 2 runs.

we've done it to better teams than this -- like the rays two nights ago.

Jere said...

"win by battering joba the cunt."

Why is everyone saying he's coming in if he's supposedly not coming in?

Colin said...

Nope...no Jabba fuckhead...it's Rivera. Damn it.

thatdietcokegirl said...

it's gonna be sweet to win by battering joba the cunt.

don't touch that dial.

gah, i don't know...

too pissed. must calm down first.

FUCKKKKKKKK. 7-2 in the 8th = our fucking game to win. go away yankee bitches.

Rob said...

NOW Gagne's up.

wtf.

Amy said...

There's Gagne.

Jere said...

Rivera who we kill regularly? What's the problem?

allan said...

tito shoulda had 2 guys up in the 8th with jeemer out there. but he had only pap? why not mdc and gagne? ????

SoSock said...

Damn, I have a headache now.
This shit just hurts
Could really use some runs

Jere said...

Why was Oka in with a 5-run lead anyway?

Rob said...

PASSEDBALLA!!!!

Jere said...

Jesus Slowell, don't hesitate, run!

thatdietcokegirl said...

6 outs to get 1 or 2 runs.

we've done it to better teams than this -- like the rays two nights ago.

lol.

allan said...

when jeemer first came in it was 5-2 and there was a guy on. tying run on deck.

then he stayed on when it was 7-2 to start the 8th.

Amy said...

Any way to get on base works for me.

Jere said...

Oh yeah. That was a looong time ago. Sorry.

Rob said...

Coco pinch-running.

The wheels are turning.

SoSock said...

PASSEDBALLA !!!!!!!!

Colin said...

Oh my dear Lord I actually feel sick in my stomach right now.

allan said...

let's go roberts, err, coco.

allan said...

colin, what you gonna do when we go through this shit in a month when it actually means something!!!!

SoSock said...

Yook ! Yook! Yook!

Jere said...

Everybody's up there swinging for the fences like the '02 Yanks. Let's get some singles. It's a 1-run deficit.

Amy said...

Four outs for us to score one run. This sucks so bad.

Rob said...

Here comes Drew in a big situation again. Come on, Drew!!!!

Colin said...

Most likely have an aneurysm.

allan said...

let's go jd!!!

Jere said...

I hate stupid National League baseball. They gave us a gift and we turn it into an inning-ending out.

thatdietcokegirl said...

after two homeruns oki should have been pulled.

Amy said...

I am with Colin. I feel sick whenever they blow a big lead, especially to the Yankees. The post season isn't everything. At least not for me.

allan said...

I'm calling a Lyndon WalkOff.

10-8 Win.

Rob said...

It's amazing, isn't it? These two teams know each other so well. You can't even fake either one team out. Were we really expecting Pettitte to give up five runs and last only four innings? And then there's Okajima and Papelbon... certainly didn't expect that.

I'll betcha Gagné gets 'em 1-2-3 here.

allan said...

clayton at third
gagne in

Jere said...

Orsillo's an idiot. Saying the Yanks with a win can widen their lead over the Tigers when they couldn't have if they lose.

Amy said...

Crowd sure got quiet. All stunned.

SoSock said...

I feel sick as well, but it's more from listening to this pablum coming thru my TV speakers. I'm not sure I've ever heard so much adoration from someone who's not a 13 year-old girl

allan said...

why doesn't don know the tigers won more than an hour ago?

Rob said...

...

Matt DeSalvo warming in the bullpen. Rivera was up. Now DeSalvo's up.

SoSock said...

They DID IT! They finally brought up '78! It had to be

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

GDGD shows injury delay. Who's injured?

Rob said...

I'm so glad I killed ESPN when I did.

It's NESN/Radio time again.

allan said...

cano has a boo-boo on his left hand.

Rob said...

Can you imagine that the Red Sox and Yankees have to play two more games? This feels like an entire SERIES here.

Jere said...

Orsillo did say the Tigers lost. But he somehow still thinks by the Yanks winning instead of losing, they'll gain a game on Detroit.

allan said...

They are smashing that 4:45 record tonight.

Rob said...

7:11 was the first pitch.

11:57 will set the major league record.

Amy said...

Remy second guessing bringing in Pap in 8th

Rob said...

Now Rivera's up.

Amy said...

Major league record for length? It sure feels like it, especially since the 8th inning started.

Rob said...

Remy second guessing bringing in Pap in 8th

I just don't get why Gagné wasn't loosening then. That's what doesn't make as much sense to me. Sure, it's really the game right there, but you had a 5 run lead... and Papelbon was warming. In the 8th. You'd think Gagné could get three outs with a 5 run cushion.

It's just confusing to me.

Rob said...

There goes my prediction for a 1-2-3.

So maybe I should have said, a scoreless 9th.

Colin said...

Hmmmm...Drew, Varitek, and Kielty. I certainly hope miracles do exist...I know clutch does.

thatdietcokegirl said...

drew, tek, bobby k up for the 9th.
