G149: Red Sox 10, Yankees 1

Yankees - 100 000 000 - 1 4 0
Red Sox - 100 013 41x - 10 12 0
Win #90. The lead's back up to to 5.5 and the magic number is down to nine. (The sportswriters for the New York tabloids will have to do a 180-degree turn from today's "alive" articles.)

Boston pulled away against the feeble New York bullpen. Torre used five pitchers in the seventh inning as the Red Sox got two hits and drew five walks, scoring four times.

David Ortiz reached base five times (two singles, two walks, and a two-run double), Jacoby Ellsbury scored a run as a pinch-runner for Kevin Youkilis (HBP, contusion to his right wrist) in the sixth, then singled in two runs of his own in the seventh. JD Drew reached three times, thanks to two walks and a single. Eric Hinske doubled, walked and homered.

Beckett (7-3-1-2-7, 108) was superb. A solo home run by Derek Jeter gave New York a 1-0 lead in the first. After two walks, also in the first inning, Beckett settled down. The Yankees managed only one baserunner over the next 19 batters -- when there were two outs in the seventh inning.

Chien-Ming Wang (3.69, 118 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.27, 140 ERA+)

I sort of guessed Amy, but I needed to confess my sin to all here. Not hear, but here!

Bottom of the order living down to expectations.

Now to Lumbago. He gives me aches as i hold my head in my hands....

Lord Lynch said...

short, sweet, end of inning.

Josh had barely sat down.

Amy said...

So why wouldn't the media comment? What makes him have the Teflon effect?

I do give him credit for calling the games the way he does, and I don't see Dice K shaking him off like, for example, Schilling will. My issue is with his hitting (or lack thereof). How can a catcher misjudge a pitch so poorly when at bat?

Rob said...

I still haven't seen any media comments on that though.

you might never see that.

I'd call that one of the rare, untouchable subjects in general. He's been so good for so long. It seems like a case-by-case scenario to me, though. Gagné, Dice, Beckett last year, even Schilling a bit. Schilling's probably got to be the most stubborn them all, shaking off pitches, etc.

Who is that girl with her mom that they keep showing? Must be some person of interest, unless the cameraman turns out to be a creep... I wouldn't rule that out. This is, after all, FOX baseball.

allan said...

Another example: Gump was a fucking idiot for 2 full years with his lineups, substitutions and staying with pitchers when they needed to be yanked (yes he did it for 2 entire seasons) -- and the media never asked him very simple questions about it. Never. It wasn't done.

Rob said...

You look at the high fastball. He stands up. It makes sense, but then you see almost all the time, when he stands up, the pitch misses WAY upstairs.

Amy said...

No sin, Lord. We can't help who or what we love.

allan said...

Man do i hate the high fastball. No one falls for it . Maybe 1 in 30-40 times. Tek is the only batter who will fall for it every time.

Amy said...

I always assume those high pitches are intentionally that high. I do wonder how the batter can not see the catcher standing up. Is there peripheral blocked by the helmet?

nixon33 said...

HEY HINSKE DID SOMETHING!

Rob said...

The only guy I remember who could throw that high fastball and get them to swing is Pedro. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he throws that high cheese and you feel a breeze from the fan.

Lord Lynch said...

I thought that said runs for a minute...

Rob said...

Fantastic jump from oCoC! Cool, calm, calculated.

Amy said...

Another nice inning. Let's score some runs.

allan said...

last batters:

NY 4: K K K
Bos 4: 8 8 8
NY 5: 7 7

allan said...

then damon effs up the pattern by lining to 8. asshole.

Amy said...

Joba must be dumb as anything. He thought Joba rules did not apply after midnight last night because it was a new day so put spikes on in case he was needed after 12.

nixon33 said...

fuck joba the cunt

laura k said...

And I've spoken about to this to redsock on Threadsox - she will never convert.

And she never should, unless she wants to.

I hope Redsock told you he did not push me into it. If he had tried, I never would have budged.

Is she a serious fan? Or just nominally?

Amy said...

Youk hit again? Do they really hate him??

Rob said...

That one looks bad.

allan said...

oh fuck.

nixon33 said...

OH NO!
this doesnt look good for youk

allan said...

and fox shows jtc. what idiots.

laura k said...

excuse me, but why is everyone talking about joba? is my GDGD like 3 innings behind or something?

Lord Lynch said...

He did L girl. Your own free will.

A Yankee all right, but not as passonate as I am about the Sox.

Amy said...

Have I said that I hate the Fox announcers yet today? Oh, yeah, twice. I still do.

allan said...

lyndon running for yook.

Rob said...

I would be VERY surprised if Youk's wrist is not broken.

Bad bad news.

allan said...

LBJ will go play left and Hinske will move to 1B.

Amy said...

L-girl, Fox was oozing over Joba. Hence, the comment. Their story from Torre. No rhyme intended.

Rob said...

And that was a fastball at Youk.

Amy said...

LBJ in after Youk hit.

Lord Lynch said...

How bad? Some of us don't get to see the game until 4:30 am UK time!

laura k said...

We were both diehards. Still are, of course. If anyone had ever told me that in the future I'd be a Sox fan, I would have laughed in their face. Even a few months before!

laura k said...

I would be VERY surprised if Youk's wrist is not broken.

I hope Ish is exaggerating. Please please please make ish be exaggerting.

Amy, thanks. GDGD still has Wang pitching, so I was very confused.

Amy said...

My husband will never convert, so I don't even try. He is a lifer. Bronx boy through and through.

Go, Papi!

Lord Lynch said...

Come on Dr.

Rob said...

How bad? Some of us don't get to see the game until 4:30 am UK time!

Sounded like it hit solidly on the bone. Fastball, he kind of fell into it, checking his swing, which exposed the right side of his right wrist. Looked like it hit him square.

allan said...

BIG MAN!

...

yook got his on the underside of his right arm, near the wrist. hard to telle xactly on crappy mlbtv screen. he dropped and rolled around awhile. serious pain

laura k said...

The idea of trying to convert someone from a team they are passionate about is ridiculous. It's insulting.

Amy said...

I don't want to think about Youk being out. It makes me too mad.

Lord Lynch said...

Flaming hell. Can't we get a decent base hit here?

We got to rely on nancy?

allan said...

Drew Time.

nixon33 said...

JD I LOVE YOU!

Lord Lynch said...

NANCY!!!!!!!

Rob said...

ALRIGHT DAVID JONATHAN!!!

laura k said...

GDGD froze...

Can someone fill me in while I restart? After Yook injury pls?

Amy said...

Drew does it again. Let's avenge that injury to Youk. More runs.

I really am atoning about Drew. That's what this season is for...a week til Yom Kippur, though I have bigger things to atone for as well.

allan said...

ON FIRE

laura k said...

NEVER MIND!!! YAY!!

Lord Lynch said...

Here comes Tek to end the run scoring.

Rob said...

Fantastic timing for Drew because of Captain Virabelli here.

Rob said...

Posada sets up low and in each time.

allan said...

ack - just crashed too. gotta restart gdgd

drew is rockin' -- fuck tha haters!

Rob said...

Foul dong. DAMN.

Amy said...

Long foul by Tek. He almost redeemed himself.

allan said...

JD to the opposite field yet again!

laura k said...

Channeling the Mirror?

Amy said...

Tek, no, no, no. Not again.

Rob said...

And then... 'Tek grounds out 4-3. Blah.

allan said...

weak bouncer to second from varitef.

2-1 good guys.

Rob said...

But you really have to hand it to Drew. Coming through, and scoring a very important run.

allan said...

Wang PC: 14-9-23 8-24 - 78

JB PC: 30-8-20 15-12 - 85

And five innings in 1:50. Speedy!!

allan said...

CI hacks and is out 6-3.

Rob said...

Youk's in the dugout with heavy ice around his wrist.

nixon33 said...

how did jeter manage to get CI as his nickname?

Rob said...

WHERE WAS THAT. Wow.

allan said...

yook on bench with right hand in towel.

any update on him from faux?

laura k said...

If he's in the dugout and not in the hospital being x-rayed, it's probably not broken.

****

i could use game updates, folks. gdgd sucks today. (as always)

Amy said...

Two nice plays by Lugo!

allan said...

That's how a SS goes to his left.

laura k said...

how did jeter manage to get CI as his nickname?

That's an easy one. People are always defending him as contributing "intangibles". Don't only look at his numbers - it's the heart - it's the leadership - it's the blahblahblah, intangibles.

And he's the captain.

Captain Intangibles.

CI.

Rob said...

any update on him from faux?

Nothing from the radio yet.

Dave O'Brien made a point that the Yankees face the O's next and the mfy are 4-8 against them.

6-3, 6-3, 6-3
Sounds like a tennis score.

allan said...

And THAT is how a SS goes to his right!

:>)

Amy said...

No word on Youk, just the visual. I agree that if they thought it was broken, he'd be getting an x-ray. I hope.

allan said...

8 pitch inning - get the wang out there again.

nixon33 said...

yeah ive been noticing lugos been better in the field as of late. nice work

laura k said...

How many pitches has Beckett thrown so far?

Rob said...

Report: X-Rays negative

laura k said...

Not that anyone is answering any of my questions...

allan said...

beckett at 93.

laura k said...

negative, whew!

Amy said...

hey, I answered your question, L-girl.

News update: No break, just a contusion.

Amy said...

Hinske gets 2B!

nixon33 said...

HINSKE END HIS O-FER This year

Rob said...

Laura, 93 pitches (62 strikes) for Beckett.

Yeah Hinske! Double off the base of the monster.

laura k said...

I'm just kidding. Feeling left out b/c I have no TV.

Hinske!! Yes.

allan said...

Hinske gettin' involved.

Double off lcf wall.

laura k said...

thank you for remembering your hard working moderator :)

allan said...

Ococ bunting? I dunno.

Amy said...

No radio either? I would hate to rely on Gameday. One advantage to living in New England=all games on TV, usually NESN.

allan said...

bunt means we're counting on lugo to hit.

just swing cc.

Lord Lynch said...

Have a bagel, miss an inning.

Hinske surprises me! Now let us show this man no mercy.

nixon33 said...

come on lugo!

Amy said...

Hinske doesn't score on the single. Oh well, FOX says good base running, "Anyone would have done that."

laura k said...

Only Gameday. I suppose I could have gotten MLB Audio but I worked sporadically this summer, I was home a lot, so I didn't bother.

Rob said...

We should probably designate somebody as a play-by-play person for the threads, for those who are in unfortunate position of not being able to watch...

JUST as I say that... My radio, just as Coco hit a liner to center (single) to move Hinske to third... Right before the pitch, my radio broke into song! Someone hit a button to start a song!

nixon33 said...

chocolate rain warming.

allan said...

2 strikes, swing away single to lcf.

productive and cripsy!!!

Rob said...

That one got carried a long way by the wind, blowing slightly in from left. More left to right than in.

allan said...

lugo glaring out at wang with his menacing eyes.

laura k said...

One advantage to living in New England=all games on TV, usually NESN.

Uh, yes. We know.

Amy said...

Two men in scoring position. Coco steals.

Rob said...

oCoC doing today what he couldn't get done last night.

Amy said...

Not trying to rub it in, just trying to compensate for not getting to live in Canada!

laura k said...

We should probably designate somebody as a play-by-play person for the threads

That would be cool. But a lot of work. Sometimes ppl take it upon themselves.

allan said...

why "chocolate rain"?

ococ sb. no throw from dumbo.

Amy said...

Fan interference? Foul? Why do fans touch balls? What is wrong with them?

nixon33 said...

cut that fans hands off

allan said...

roy with a line drive that hits foul about 15 feet shy of the pesky pole.

laura k said...

If you are hankering for Canada... here it is. :)

Amy said...

Hinske sure steamrolled him there. Whoa.

nixon33 said...

fuck

Rob said...

Yeah HINSKE!!! PLOWING at him. That was AWESOME. Out or not.

Good job by Posada for holding onto that one. But they played the game.

allan said...

grounder to second, comes home and hinske *levels* dumbo with a hard hit but big ears hold son for the FC.

laura k said...

So Hinske was out but he took Passedballa with him?

laura k said...

Got it, thanks :)

allan said...

Hinske just made a lot of friends in NYC.

Hell of a hit.

Amy said...

Fox says a clean play. They actually made a statement that was not a pro-Yankee statement. And notices crowd applauds when Posada is ok. We are a classy group of fans, aren't we?

Rob said...

So Hinske was out but he took Passedballa with him?

Plowed right through Passedballa, but he held onto the ball, so Hinske was out. But man, what an effort. Ortiz could have done the same thing last night, but it was probably smart not to.

PEDROIA steals second!

Rob said...

That was a big hit, even for football, I'd wager.

allan said...

dusty steals second without a throw. dumbo still seeing the birdies around his noggin.

laura k said...

They actually made a statement that was not a pro-Yankee statement.

I guarantee ESPN last night was worse!

And notices crowd applauds when Posada is ok. We are a classy group of fans, aren't we?

No. Not particularly.

Ortiz could have done the same thing last night, but it was probably smart not to.

OMG! NOO thank you!

Amy said...

LBJ getting praise again from Fox. Let him just drive him some runs. My 23 year old daughter thinks he is a cutie. Hmmmm, he's even in her age range.

Amy said...

HE did it! Your boy, Laura!

nixon33 said...

THE KID!

laura k said...

THAT'S MY BOY!!!!!!

Rob said...

Lyndon's certainly got a good eye, doesn't it? Not only is he aggressive, but he rarely swings at bad pitches.

SIR LYNDON!!! Extending his hit-streak and getting an RBI with it! Through the hole between short and third into left field. Pedroia brakes at third.

Lord Lynch said...

LBJ getting some London Lovin'

allan said...

LBJ!

Amy said...

Big Papi....Time for a clutch hit.

Amy said...

YES! Another nice hit. And we get another run and another collision with Posada. Birdies really singing around his noggin! (That one made me laugh out loud---luckily husband had left the room.)

Rob said...

YES!!!!! ELLSBURY SCORES FROM FIRST ON A GAP SHOT!! It was cut off out there by Cabrera, who threw a strike to home. He is a very special player.

BYE BYE WANG.

allan said...

BIG MAN ONE MORE TIME

Lord Lynch said...

Le Tiz getting some Souf East London Serenading

laura k said...

In play, run(s)...

yes...???

YES????

allan said...

double and 2 more rib eyes for god.

nixon33 said...

WOO HOO! PAPIU DOUBLE the kid under the tag...SAFE!

Amy said...

Yes, TWO runs.

Lord Lynch said...

See you, not Cy Young CMW

laura k said...

whoo-hoo :)

Rob said...

I certainly cut out most of what I said... The very special player I was talking about was not Cabrera, but Ellsbury. Oops. Heh. Not many guys score from first on a shot like that, quickly cut off in the gap.

allan said...

LBJ slides in hard, beats the throw and it's 5-1.

...

WHY CHOCOLATE RAIN GODDAMMIT?

Amy said...

No tag from Posada. He must be dizzy.

nixon33 said...

search cocolate rain on youtube and you'll see why edgar is called that

Rob said...

You go back to the collision of Hinske and that could have had something to do with Posada not tagging Ellsbury.

Castiglione: "Never in my 25 years with the Red Sox have I seen a guy run like Ellsbury can."

allan said...

No tag from Posada. He must be dizzy.

wow you're right. just saw another replay -- he gets the ball on a bounce and then just kneels there as lyndon slides by.

hee hee

Lord Lynch said...

I am not going to bed.

I can't trust you lot to hold a lead while I am asleep.

allan said...

thanks, nix. :>)

Rob said...

Unintended consequences... They happen a lot in baseball. Hinske really had a huge effect on Posada. He had to have been dizzy. He still looks dazed in there facing Beckett. And he pops out to Pedroia.

allan said...

And how many times do you see it -- the catcher that gets his fucking bell rung not once but twice, leads off the next inning?

nixon33 said...

i hadnt realized you'd asked why choc rain. he does look like that motherfucker though.

Rob said...

Every time, RS.

allan said...

since the first inning, the mfy have had one baserunner.

only four men on base all game.

allan said...

choc rain -- i will have to look after the game.

i get a prince/darryl dawkins vibe from the name? am i warm?

Rob said...

No number on the monster is safe when Ellsbury (or Moss) are playing LF

Lord Lynch said...

7 outs left.

DO NOT LET UP.

Rob said...

Beckett takes care of business, hitting Giambi on the elbow with a heater. Warnings on both sides. HGH trots to first.

Amy said...

Damn, I have to leave in twenty minutes, and like the Lord, I am not trusting the four run lead. Especially with Giambi on base as HBP. Was it intentional? Fox says yes.

nixon33 said...

RS, no more like skinny nerd vibe.

Lord Lynch said...

Josh getting some respect from the UK for that.

Amy said...

Giambi on third. I really wish they would not hit people on purpose. Why risk a baserunner? Especially after last night.

Rob said...

Lopez, Timlin warming

Lord Lynch said...

Hmmmmmm.

Very hmmmmmmmm.

nixon33 said...

end this threat josh.

Rob said...

1-2 in Milk Dud.

Put 'em away!

Amy said...

One more strike, please. YES!!!

Rob said...

GOODBYE, MILK DUD!

allan said...

yook - contusion right wrist

Lord Lynch said...

Threat over.

Business concluded.

Cy Young notice served.

allan said...

got milk (dud)?

josh does.

laura k said...

No number on the monster is safe when Ellsbury (or Moss) are playing LF

Amy, LL, don't let last night scare you so much. Go in peace.

Colin said...

Now that's Cy Young ace material right there!

Amy said...

"yook - contusion right wrist"

Yeah, see comments at about 6 pm!

laura k said...

it's not like our bullpen is blowing leads every other day or anything.

Lord Lynch said...

I'm here for a while. My body clock is fucked from going to bed at 4 a.m. last night.

nixon33 said...

ok only six outs away. just like last night.

Rob said...

Timlin still warming. Could be it for Beckett.

laura k said...

No number on the monster is safe when Ellsbury (or Moss) are playing LF

Amy, LL, don't let last night scare you so much. Go in peace.

OK, I left something out there. I meant to smile at Ish's post before wishing a vaya con dios to Amy and the Lord.

laura k said...

laura k said...

ok only six outs away. just like last night.

oh come on! been reading too much ny post lately?

Colin said...

Oh and that Chocolate Rain this is pure hilarity, esp. the NES remake.

Rob said...

Lead-off walk.

Sing it to me, McCarver.

Amy said...

Drew gets lead off walk. Perhaps he has to become my favorite for a while, while I atone and while I try and get over being mad at Tek.

allan said...

DJ Werd on base yet again.

ON FIRE, I tell you.

laura k said...

Lead-off walk.

Sing it to me, McCarver.

that's right, timmy, we expect to see jd cross the plate!

Rob said...

Sounded like Drew got a good jump. That inside pitch didn't need to be fought off. Posada wouldn't have had a chance.

Looked like an afterthought swing, though, from Tef.

allan said...

108 for beckett. i say thanks and let's go pen.

magic number could be 9!!!

allan said...

what the fuck you swinging at tek? it's like way inside and at his back foot?

Rob said...

Virabelli.

Amy said...

I am giving Tek this last at bat before I have to leave. He'd better not let me down. Another long foul. Come on. Close but no cigar. Come on. DAMN. Yet another K.

nixon33 said...

l-girl. no im just sying we need to finish these fuckers. we will.

Lord Lynch said...

8 LOB for Tek.

Very hmmmmmmmmm.

laura k said...

nix, you are correct, sir. can't let up for a second.

Rob said...

Ron Villone coming on.

I like that name. Sounds like the name of a hotshot cop or something.

allan said...

warnings were issued.

villone coming in to face hinske.

...

will fatass feel like he has to drill someone tomorrow?

laura k said...

Sounds like the name of a hotshot cop or something.

Or a rag arm that we'll tee off on. One of those.

Amy said...

OK, got to get ready to go. I will be listening in the car. I hate leaving before the 8th inning.

laura k said...

Bye Amy! I won't give the send off i did yesterday, just in case these superstition things turn out to be true.
