Fairly obvious stats, plus total bases and runs created.

The first one eats a Bible diet. In 2007.

The second one would have if he'd thought of it, I'm sure. In 2006.

My guess (before I find the answer myself) would be A: Drew / B: Nixon

And if I were to guess again, I'd say A: Drew / B: Varitek

I think it's A: Drew and B: Nixon (or Millar)

My first guess was right, but I guess it was not specific enough.

1-0 us after four

I just clicked the "chat" button at Gameday. Dumb. No one talks about the game that's going on. We go six, 1-0 Team Canada.

JAYS WITH THE WALK OFF!!!!

Magic Number = 11 :-)

allan said...

Off night, so we went out.

Yay Jays! 5.5 GA.

...

Answer:

A = Drew 2007
B = Nixon 2006

Thank you Blue Jays! Please continue winning until Monday.

Magic number 11? Shouldn't it be 11.5? Last night it was 12, and we didn't play, so...

laura k said...

Oh duh, I just remembered, magic number, not like GA or GB. Full games only. 11 it is.

Cool.

Did you guys see what Damon did with a foul ball? Some guy held out a $20 bill (canadian, obviously) and JD gave him the ball and took the cash, then jogged down about 15 rows and gave it to a little kid. That was hilarious.

I mean, forget about money and MLB and Johnny Damon and the Yankees. That small strip of video was cool to see.

One final post from the land of the free ;-) before I embark to war-torn USA in the wee hrs of the morning...haha...

I should be able to sneak a couple posts in while in Beantown, however, what's most important is that the division is won this weekend (essentially...not mathematically)

I'm off to the airport for my 7am flight to Logan...probably will end up at good ol' gate B9. Ohh B9 how we love you so.

Later all!

I thought it was Drew and Damon

Damon for 2007:

PA AVG OBP SLG OPS+ RS RBI TB RC
540 .260 .349 .377 96 81 56 177 70

Close, but no cigar.

I'm surpised it took so long for someone to bring this up.

I don't know if Odawg is a member of the "Shoulda Kept Trot" club, but would the SKT people be happy with Drew's 2007 performance if his take-home pay was cut in half?

I don't think so.

Rob said...

Well you're always expecting improvement. Wouldn't matter if Drew got paid only as much as Trot did, the general expectation is for the right field position (in the lineup and in the field) be improved, or else why let Trot go? I guess that's how it would be. But you know how people are - they expect too much sometimes. It was for good reason, though.

2006: 594 PA, .283 AVG, .393 OBP, .498 SLG, 125 OPS+, 84 R, 100 RBI, 246 TB, 104 RC.

So that's probably what people expected, which would be right on par with the money, if you compare to Trot's season last year.

The reality is that Drew wasn't Drew this year but he wasn't worse than what we would have had [Trot], and given a good, restful off-season, I think you'll see a much improved J.D. Drew next year.

Will he have the 2006 numbers? Hopefully, but maybe not. We'll see.

Nixon had equity in Boston, Drew came with baggage, perception can not be weighed in stats alone...

Drew was supposed to do more..you can say money means nothing but they were paying for 300 25 and 100....That's why he gets the salary he gets .they set markets based on stats, why cant opinions not be based on salaries?

laura k said...

There's no doubt that Trot had credit in the bank in Boston - mostly based on history, not performance. That is, based on emotion, not fact.

And there's no doubt that Drew came in with baggage - based on perceptions and on media images. Was there reality behind that baggage?

they set markets based on stats, why cant opinions not be based on salaries?

Many people base their opinions on a big load of hot air from talk radio.

As we've said here a million times, there's no doubt that this year Drew has been a huge disappointment. I'm sure he's been more of a disappointment to himself than he is to anyone else.

But (a) everyone has off years, (b) it's too early to judge his performance as a Red Sox overall, (c) could anyone seriously want Trot Nixon to have stayed any longer? Someone had to replace him.

SO FAR that replacement has been no worse than Nixon, and is likely to be much better next year.

So why should I care how much the replacement makes?

(Nice to see you, 9Casey, I've missed you in game threads.)

i can't add much more to what laura said.

all past history (whether it comes from nixon, varitek, manny, schilling) means nothing when it comes to putting wins on the 2007 scoreboard.

Exactly why pedro and Damon are no longer here, No one would have ever questioned Theo giving them the money they received from other teams..Because they had history...But Drew's salary is questionable, because there was no other team out there going to pay him that much....They were bidding against themselves..Is Drew's agent Boras, and maybe the Red Sox made that deal to further thier leverage with Dice-K.....

History always matters in baseball, managers are always looking back at what players did in the past, wheter it was last year or three years ago.....

Thanks..it's been hard to try and get in the flow of a game thread, for me, I also now have NESN...

To me, the thing about the money is that since we paid twice as much for the new guy, shouldn't he be twice* as good? Or at the very least, not exactly the same as the last guy? But I was saying this at the beginning of the year anyway, since Drew's stats were never anywhere near twice as good as Trot's.

Whatever, though, they're both Christians. I'll see 'em both in hell. (Where everyone's hat is dirty.)

So, could everyone tell I got this quiz right? I mean, I guess I could've been talking about Bill Mueller or something, but still...

*I guess the quality scale is like the Richter scale, where eight is twice as strong as seven or whatever. I wouldn't expect Drew to hit .600 if he got paid twice as much as a .300 hitter, etc.

allan said...

Yes, we expect more from Drew because he's a better player, but that wasn't the objection the post was directed at.

No one would have ever questioned Theo giving them the money they received from other teams..Because they had history

I would have seriously questioned it -- in both cases. And you know how much I love Pedro. Under the circumstances, I agreed with letting them both go -- and Theo was offering less than each player received elsewhere.

And Damon was such a steal for the MFY that they were looking to dump his ass in the middle of Year 2 of his 4-year deal.
