Cleveland - 100 001 010 - 3 8 0
Red Sox - 104 032 00x - 10 12 0
Ortiz and Manny were on base 10 out of 10 times.

Beckett: 6-4-2-0-7, 80. Sabathia: 4.1-7-8-5-3, 85.

***

Lineups:
Grady Sizemore, CF Dustin Pedroia, 2B
Asdrubal Cabrera, 2B Kevin Youkilis, 1B
Travis Hafner, DH David Ortiz, DH
Victor Martinez, C Manny Ramirez, LF
Ryan Garko, 1B Mike Lowell, 3B
Jhonny Peralta, SS Bobby Kielty, RF
Kenny Lofton, LF Jason Varitek, C
Franklin Gutierrez, RF Coco Crisp, CF
Casey Blake, 3B Julio Lugo, SS
Over to Amalie Benjamin with the weather:
Though it was raining fairly hard on my drive into the ballpark (and my commute's not all that long), it has mostly stopped at this point [2:39 PM]. Still misty, still damp, but the rain that was pelting the ballpark has paused.

Weather forecasts for tonight predict that the rain will cease enough to get the game in, certainly. It should be cloudy, with temperatures dipping to the mid-50s.
***

Carsten Charles Sabathia (3.21, 138 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.27, 139 ERA+)

Beckett:
You've got to start at the top with [Sizemore]. He's the one that gets everything going. Obviously, they've got their thumpers in the middle. During this time of year, not many teams don't have that.

I think it starts with keeping guys like [Sizemore] off base and just pitching to your strengths and exploiting weaknesses. ... All day is kind of like an anxiety-type deal for me ... but after you throw your first pitch, it's back to executing pitch by pitch by pitch.
Sabathia:
Instead of going out there and trying to throw every pitch 100 mph and leaving balls up and leaving them down the middle, I want to go out and throw 91 and 92 and spot it up, get in on guys, and if I need to hump up and throw hard, then I will. ... I think it's going to be wild. ... I just need to go out there and try to keep them [the Fenway fans] as quiet as possible.
Many Cleveland players have very little playoff experience. Beckett was asked if that was relevant: "I didn't have any in '03 and I did pretty good." ... David Ortiz has been in pain for much of this season. ... "You're on fire? I'm on fire!"
Rocky Colavito assures people whose beliefs are stuck in the 14th Century that he did not place a curse on his former team. ... A persistent drizzle after the Red Sox's workout yesterday meant that Cleveland had to hit in the indoor cages.

Boston was 5-2 against Cleveland this season.

At Boston
May 28 Boston 5-3
May 29 Boston 4-2
May 30 Cleveland 8-4
At Cleveland
July 23 Boston 6-2
July 24 Boston 1-0
July 25 Cleveland 1-0
July 26 Boston 14-9
Roger Rubin, Daily News:
The ultimate Yankee killer believes George Steinbrenner may do more to hurt the Bombers than any heartbreaking home run he could hit against them.

So we have the bud lite box pig party masks. Let us hope that this Halloween we don't see that mask combined with jock straps on the little trick or treaters.

c'mon dustin!

Good evening from Cape Cod. What a blowout! We drove right past Fenway after picking up our daughter in Boston. Boy, was it exciting just to see the lights and all the people standing up on the new platform area out in right field. But it is COOOLD. So perhaps better to hear the radio and now watch the TV.

oh, lol. it means 'elite'. it's like hacker/gamer slang, w/e ;)

Amy said...

So the surprise guest I take it after a quick scroll is Ofer? Who I also gather is Israeli? Hi Ofer.

laura k said...

oh, lol. it means 'elite'. it's like hacker/gamer slang, w/e ;)

thanks :)

i'm not too up on these things. of course, not as not-up as amy. "what does stfu mean?"

that was so cute! :-D

Ofer said...

Hey Amy. Didn't really mean it to be a surprise... just wanna watch a game, you know? And my hosts here have been very... well, hosty.

allan said...

mdc and gascan (borowski) up

Well, time for me to pack up the laptop and get ready for work. Check in with you guys later!!

(anybody sticking around for the Az/Co game later?)

cya later!!!

laura k said...

Hi Amy! Glad you could make it here tonight. Yes, we have a guest here tonight from the land of milk & honey. Pretty cool.

Amy said...

Ahh, thanks, L-girl, for reminding me! I will ask my daughter if she knows what it means, since she is right here. Always good to be the oldest fart in the crowd!

allan said...

MY GLOVE IS ON FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!

Amy said...

Hi Ofer, I meant a surprise for us---as Allan posted mysteriously earlier today that there would be an unnamed guest. Do you live in Israel or Canada now?

My daughter also has never heard of STFU. Guess I raised her right. :)

thatdietcokegirl said...

almost a wind-dong!

laura k said...

Amy, I am very nearly as old a fart as you (I think). I love the age range here.

Ofer said...

I live in Israel. But, I haven't been there since May, and won't be there until next September probably... in the Americas for a while right now...

allan said...

mmmmmmmmmm ... oldest fart.

Amy said...

So from what I could tell from the radio, Beckett did well but was not nearly as "dominant" this game. Gave up several extra base hits, but had lots of run support so no sweat. He just didn't seem to be as sharp as last time. Fair assessment, or was he better than it seemed.

NICE tumble Manny!

Ron said...

Manny sucks.

laura k said...

I'd say Beckett was pretty dominant. If all our starters were that good every time out... we'd be the first team to go 11-0 in the post-season.

Anyone else?

Amy said...

I meant oldest in the sense of being "old school," out of touch, and uncool. As for chronological age, I figure the nice thing about cyberspace is that we can all act as young or old as we want. I also love that there is such an age range and it matters not one bit.

Since in real life I have friends ranging in age from 20 years younger than I am to about 15 years older, it's all in the head, except when the body aches!

Amy said...

OK, that's good to know about Beckett. On the radio it is hard to tell just how close the pitches were or how cool he seemed under pressure.

laura k said...

Can you imagine having Stephen King plug your book on Fox during the ALCS???? WOW.

Jim said...

Oldest fart?

Sorry, Amy, yer bumped.

I'll take 6 outs and 1 run from Timlin/Lopez any night.

allan said...

i'm heading to bed after the game -are there people watching the nl game 2? ish?

Amy said...

Can you imagine having Stephen King plug your book on Fox during the ALCS???? WOW.

I just wish I HAD a book to plug... Frustrated great American novelist here. (Not that I have ever gotten beyond the first page of any such novel.)

Rob said...

i think i'll watch, allan, but i don't know how long i'll last. i could open up a thread over on threadsox for the next game.

Amy said...

Papi is hot as hell! Finally got a chance to get a hit instead of a walk.

Rob said...

can you believe this?!? 'Flo: on base 16 out of 18 times this postseason.

Unreal.

laura k said...

As for chronological age, I figure the nice thing about cyberspace is that we can all act as young or old as we want.

I love that so much. I've made friends of all ages on the internet. It's like there are no ages.

Since in real life I have friends ranging in age from 20 years younger than I am to about 15 years older, it's all in the head

Eyup. I am totally with you there. It's the best kind of diversity.

****

Amy, you show up and I immediately start non-baseball chatter w/ you. :)

allan said...

flo and manny on base

10 for 10!!!!!

laura k said...

Pinch runner? *perk*

I know who that is!

Rob said...

Uncle Joe: People who think Ortiz had a down year really don't know what they're talking about.

I know we've touched upon this before, but it's fantastic that Joe mentioned it on the air. A lot of people just look at home runs.

Ortiz and Manny have not made an out tonight. all 10 PA they've reached base.

Rob said...

By the way, the math for the OBP for Ortiz works out to .888

.888 OBP. Amazing.

Amy said...

Non-baseball chatter is easy when we have such a big lead. Even I am feeling really calm tonight.

Ofer, where in Israel? Did you follow baseball before you got here, or are you new to the game? I understand they have started a baseball league in Israel.

laura k said...

Non-baseball chatter is easy when we have such a big lead.

Yeah, we're sitting here chattering, and we were saying the same thing - you can tell it's a big lead when we're blabbing about Israel and the US and holidays and baseball...

Amy said...

I don't think I will stay up for the NL game. After seeing the rude crowd in AZ last night, I just can't get too excited about that series. Plus it's so late to start a game.

Amy said...

Tek getting some good wood on the bat tonight. Hope you all have noticed.

laura k said...

We have to leave for work at 7:30 a.m. Definitely no NL game!

laura k said...

Tek getting some good wood on the bat tonight. Hope you all have noticed.

We have. We have also noticed "Amy will be happy to see this".

Amy said...

I meant wood on the ball. Definitely too tired for the NL game!

allan said...

dimmer!!!!

Amy said...

Yes, I was quite excited in the car when he hit that double.

Amy said...

Gagne...another big lead for him. He sure has become the pitcher to use to "close" the runaway games.

Ofer said...

I'm from Jerusalem. I'm actually a 2003-postseason fan (: The first full game I ever watched was game 3 of the 2003 ALDS vs. Oakland. I just told the whole story of how I became a fan out here about an hour and a half ago...
About the baseball league in Israel- I've heard about it, but I can't imagine I'll get caught up in it. And I don't think it'll catch up with anyone else, either.

Amy said...

Has Gagne ever had a 1-2-3 inning since he joined the Sox?

Jerusalem is an amazing city. We were there in '97. It was really hard to leave. (We were there for only 7 days or so, plus another week or so traveling to other places in Israel.

Another hit given up by Gagne. Sheesh.

Rob said...

Lofton just hit a one-handed double.

impressive.

Amy said...

I guess it is hard for baseball to catch on in new places, but then again it has in Japan, Latin America, Canada, so who knows? One of my favorite old time Mets, Art Shamsky, has some role with Israel baseball.

allan said...

high heat from dimmer! OUI!

Amy said...

Finally a second out. Come on, Eric.

laura k said...

I so want Gagne to do well.

Amy said...

We all want him to do well. It just would be wonderful to have someone besides Okajima to do the 8th inning.

Amy said...

But then he walks the batter to load the bases.

Rob said...

It's 10-3, but I think it's important to have a short hook anyways. That is all.

Rob said...

23 pitches, 11 strikes

Amy said...

The crowd is getting antsy. Me, too.

Rob said...

Now Papelbon's up.

laura k said...

He's not going to blow a SEVEN RUN lead.

Bot can sit down. Amy can un-antsy.

Rob said...

Now it's quickly 3-2.

Get another strike through there and let's go home happy.

Rob said...

and THERE it is!

Amy said...

I really hope we don't have to count on him when the game is within 3-4 runs.

Finally!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

huzzah!!

laura k said...

Well, that was fun. I'm outta here. See y'all tomorrow.

Rob said...

Well, I'm going to open a thread over at ThreadSox for the NL game. Good night L and A!

I don't expect much at the NL thread, but it's there if anyone wants to continue chatting, etc.

Amy said...

Well, game 1 down. Amazingly stress free. Hope Schilling has it as easy tomorrow night.

thatdietcokegirl said...

I really hope we don't have to count on him when the game is within 3-4 runs.

i was thinking the same thing.
but..he is someone who used to be a closer. and a good one. maybe it wasn't good for him to come here, to be second best (or even third or fourth) to papelbon.

Amy said...

Good night, all. See you after dinner tomorrow!

Rob said...

Woot! 4 down, 7 to go!

allan said...

See ya, ish!

Rox up 1-0 in the 2nd.

laura k said...

he is someone who used to be a closer. and a good one.

a *great* one! one of the best. but he was over-used, and injured, had surgeries.

i was just hoping he still had it in him. but he really doesn't, does he?

thatdietcokegirl said...

maybe not. but he came back nicely at the end there.

he shouldn't have cut his hair, lol. he was gagne with that hair.

guys, don't scoff. this is srsly stuff. just don't lose yr look, k??? don't do it ;p

Benjamin said...

Well done.

tim said...

Holy fuck! The NL game is STILL going on! I wrote my exam, went out for dinner, came home and started watching the taped sox game at about 12...FF'ed thru commercials and basically innings 7-9 but did stop for Borowski in the 8th (Thought = "we might get a few here") and Gagne in the 9th (Thought = "they might get a few here")....great win, ups my confidence in this series a lot...now if only they can get to carmoaner like that...

thanks for the text, redsock - i had actually just gotten back and put on the tape when i got it, but much appreciated! i figured itd be done by 11:30, when i didnt get it by about 11 i got concerned about extras...but came home and turned on the tv (tuned to sportsnet)...and held my breath. whew! NLCS game!

another successful avoiding of score, hope tomorrow will work out as well. ill probably watch it sunday morning tho, given i'll be completely in the bag @ nite when i get back from Oktoberfest! :P (half in the bag = acceptable to watch game....oktoberfest then watching = rewatching in AM to remember what happened...maybe ill do that tho!)

anyway must sleep...after baseball! soooo tired, fucking exam...

time to end this incredibly long rant. lates, yo...
