ALDS 2: Red Sox 6, Angels 3

Red Sox up 2-0? Essackly!

***

Kelvim Escobar (3.40, 127 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (4.40, 104 ERA+)

None of the Angels have ever faced Matsuzaka. Sean McAdam calls Dice's season "predictably unpredictable" and wonders which pitcher will be on the hill tonight?
Will it be the one who allowed two runs or fewer in 17 of his 32 starts this season? Or will it be the one who allowed five or more runs in 10 different starts? Will it be the one who struck out seven or more in 17 starts? Or the one who walked three or more in 17 outings?
Escobar did not pitch against Boston this season. While Lugo (4-for-7) and Crisp (5-for-14) have hit Escobar well in the past, Ortiz (4-for-24, .167) and Manny (7-for-32, .219) have not. Opposing batters hit .337/.417/.535 against Escobar in September after a .192/.279/.233 August.

Mike Scioscia said that Vladimir Guerrero will "probably" play right field tonight; Garret Anderson (0-for-4, 2K in Game 1) will also be in lineup, despite his pinkeye.

Coco Crisp talks about playing center field at Fenway:
You take [Beckett's] 94- or 95-mile-per-hour fastball, his curve, what he likes to do to the guy on strike two, is he going to set him up with the high fastball. Are they going to throw the guy away or pitch him in? You take all that into consideration on how you're going to play the guy.
Josh Beckett's strong of 19 consecutive Angels retired tied the Yankees' Mike Mussina for the third-longest string of outs in the postseason, behind two other Yankees: Don Larsen (26, in 1956) and Herb Pennock (22, in 1927).

***

Before that, at 5 PM:
New York (Pettitte, 4.05, 107 ERA+) at Cleveland (Carmona, 3.06, 145 ERA+)

So, Ish, do you think Schilling should have started the second game? I am also disappointed in DiceK, even though we are only one run behind. Maybe the Dominator just spoiled us.

No, because of the simple logistics of it. Dice on the west coast with the lag, etc. But assuming the Red Sox go to the ALCS, I don't think Dice should pitch Game 2 then. Schilling should have that game.

L-girl said...

nix, i had the same reaction

David said...

Now we score runs, please!

redsock said...

if dice is nibbling, why isn't varitek -- the guy calling the fragging pitches! -- doing something -- anything -- to stop it?

David said...

HFA!!!!!!!!!

Amy said...

You go, FAN!

Sarah Gates said...

There is quite a lot of ass/head intersection tonight.

Amy said...

What a cute little boy who caught that ball! There's a story to tell his grandchildren some day.

Amy said...

Full count. Come on, Manny. Catch the purple colored ball on the ring. (I love taht story).

Amy said...

OK, a walk is fine, also. Now, Lowell, no messing around.

L-girl said...

Bases loaded for the doctor....!

redsock said...

doctor ready to perform an addarun operation.

ish said...

if dice is nibbling, why isn't varitek -- the guy calling the fragging pitches! -- doing something -- anything -- to stop it?

That's my question. My concern all season.

One of the first people to hug that fan was Stephen King.

Sarah Gates said...

Load 'em up for the Doctor.

prescription for pain!

Amy said...

Sac fly and we have a tie!

redsock said...

bit of a heart attack, but a sac -- and a run.

Colin said...

A sac fly always works.

Sarah Gates said...

Ok, I'll take the sac to tie.

I just have this feeling that as soon as we take the lead in this game, we're not giving it up. It's just a matter of getting it. (Love those baseball predictions by gut.)

Amy said...

Come on, JD, earn your salary NOW.

Amy said...

Full count, again. Come on, JD.

redsock said...

cora, lugo and lowell laughing like crazy in the dugout. they know.

David said...

After 4+ hours of thunderstorms, my cable decides to go out NOW!!

Colin said...

Awesome observation RS.

Colin said...

Awwww man that is pure shit outta luck David. Sorry dude...

Amy said...

Nice AB, here. Papi getting pooped out in the hot October weather. But Drew does nothing...

ish said...

Drew doesn't come through, but the Red Sox tie the score and they all but assure Escobar won't be back in the 6th. It should now be the Battle of the Bullpens.

Sarah Gates said...

Oh, David, that's rotten!

Colin said...

MDC in now huh?

redsock said...

a battle of the bullpens

tbs says NO ONE scores on the angels pen.

oooooohhh nooooooooooo....

ish said...

Can't get the radio, David? Where are you?

ish said...

I was surprised to see Scot Shields warming in the 5th for the Angels. But TBS hasn't seen Angels Bullpen vs. Red Sox bats.

redsock said...

mdc -- all is well.

David said...

On and off for a few minutes. Of course no cable means no internet. Good now, unless power...

redsock said...

TBS just mentioned MDC's WHIP!

My head may explode.

Amy said...

MDC knows to cover first.

redsock said...

our company is here - L playing host.

Amy said...

Where are they taking the kid who caught the ball? To meet Manny? To talk to the press?

ish said...

Kid at Fenway who took ball from catcher's mit = anti-Steve Bartman

David said...

Good idea ish. XM radio out in the truck if i need it.

thatdietcokegirl said...

c-h-o-n-e. chowwwn.

Amy said...

I hope your guests are baseball fans, RS.

yoyo said...

The guy next to the boy that caught the Manny foul ball is Stewart O'Nan, the co-author (with Stephen King) of the Sox book "Faithful"!

thatdietcokegirl said...

ooh 1-2-3? MDC I LIKE YOU.

Amy said...

Nice inning for MDC. Get runs now.

Sarah Gates said...

Very nice, MDC. Well done.

ish said...

M-D-C with the 1-2-3.

Amy said...

My eyes are tired. I hope they hold up for the next three and a half innings.

Sarah Gates said...

Time to show those dopes exactly who hits the Angels pen...

Though even when we do, they may not see it, as a result of the earlier head/ass observations.

Amy said...

Crisp walked. Perhaps Angels bullpen not quite so infallible.

Sarah Gates said...

"the red sox, statistically, this year had the best pen in the american league"

Why, thanks for noticing!

Sarah Gates said...

Mine too, Amy. Tomorrow's a 9a - 9p workday for me too. Dave has already gone to bed, the sensible non-fan that he is. He just doesn't know what he's missing!

Sarah Gates said...

I thought that was going fair. Poop.

Amy said...

Ouch, work for twelve hours on Saturday...are you a doctor or nurse or something?

Amy said...

Huh? Oh, damn, that's annoying. I missed that one. Guess Crisp did also.

ish said...

Strange play for Coco. Certainly something that doesn't crop up, very often, not stepping on second before going back to first. I certainly didn't know you had to retouch second, but it makes sense now.

Learn new things every day.

Sarah Gates said...

Nope, nothing so vital. I'm a freelance theatre technician. Mostly lights and sound, but tomorrow is all about refinishing the stage floor. Excrutiatingly dull. Very much like watching paint dry, only smellier.

Amy said...

I didn't know that rule either, Ish. Guess it rarely happens.

ish said...

MDC's got a good changeup.

Amy said...

Theater stuff sounds pretty exciting to me (even floor refinishing). What's the play?

I am glad I don't have to get up early. My husband went to sleep after the Yankees lost. I feel for you, Sarah.

Amy said...

Who are Sox bringing in? Did they say?

redsock said...

jeemer in

Amy said...

Okajima in.

Sarah Gates said...

No particular play - this company is Lincoln Center's Arts in Education branch, and so we're just setting up for the new school season. Three dance companies, three theatre peices (one produced in house, two outside companies) and several musical acts. We send a teaching artist in to the schools (mostly NYC public schools, but others as well) to work with the kids in their classes before they come to see the show and then they either come see it in our small theatre or we take it to them.

It's a very cool organization and I think I fail to recognize that sometimes, getting lost in the details and forgetting what a worthy thing it is. (So much of what I do is purely commercial.)

Sarah Gates said...

White Flag up in the pen...

redsock said...

jeemer with the K.

top of the order coming up.

ish said...

Okajima was OKI DOKI tonight!

Amy said...

Sounds like a great program, Sarah. It's awful how the arts have been cut out of most public schools so it does seem to come down to private organizations to fill the gap in some way.

I was resting my eyes, but I guess Oki did ok. Ready for some runs now. I can't make it to extra innings.

s1c said...

Finally - Hey, everybody, pretty good game huh? I missed the first 1 1/2 innings when Daisuke blew up I guess.

L-girl - mutts are the best. or at least mixed breeds. they're healthier. and just... greater. :)

I agree!!

Ish - It's just a little discouraging, is all. The thing that bugs me the most about him all season is how it just seems like he can be dominant but chooses to nibble instead.

I been calling him Matt Clement with better stuff most of the year. Can drive me crazy also

Sarah G. - Yeah, I vote for an embarrassing drubbing for Fat Billy as well.

Might vote count? I say humiliate the fat B****** !

redsock said...

truped myself on that yook liner.

...

cookie time.

Amy said...

Where have you been, S1C?

Amy said...

OK, Manny, once again there are MOB. Could you please drive in a run?

Sarah Gates said...

Man, Papi is just a walking fool today. Gotta get the man some hiking boots or something.

s1c said...

Where have you been, S1C?

Fridays are the tough night. Get home from the day job and try to get some sleep for the Mid shift on Job 2.

Gotta pay for the Ballet, Ballroom dance lessons and the guitar and flute lessons for B-fly ;).

At work now watching the game on TBS.

Amy said...

Up to Doc again, but sac fly won't work this time.

s1c said...

Back to back BB's. Time for the Doctor to deliver the run baby!!

Amy said...

You guys have more energy than I do---working weekend days and evenings and able to keep your eyes open at midnight. I am fighting to keep mine from closing.

s1c said...

Fragging Sox. Oki staying?

Amy said...

Your daughter must be quite talented and lucky to have such a hard working father, S1C.

redsock said...

just setting up the walkoff...

ish said...

truped myself on that yook liner.

Me too.

The kid who made the catch out of Mathis' glove's name is Danny Vinik, son of Jeff Vinik, one of the limited partners for the Red Sox (explains the location of the seat he was in), told Amalie Benjamin that was the best catch in his baseball career.

"I still can't believe it," Vinik said, before assuring a reporter that it was the best catch in his baseball career. "It was unbelievable. Just seeing it up there, sticking my hand out there and it just landed in my hand. I don't remember really what happened. Just unbelievable, amazing."

Amy said...

Manny being Manny.

redsock said...

good lord manny.

Sarah Gates said...

That was a very er, entertaining, catch. Thanks MBM.

SoSock said...

Crap
What's up with the Doc?
I was sure he'd come thru there.
Been watching the game with my son and a couple of friends and my wife has the laptop so I'm off the thread. Seems a little rude to run in here every inning to chat, but I had to catch up at least a little
So - 1-2-3 and let's see the bottom get on base like they have been all night!
And hey - a nice catch by Manny is a good way to start!

s1c said...

just setting up the walkoff...

Walk off by ON FIRE!!!!

Thanks Amy!!

phrenile said...

Keep on keeping it interesting, Manny.

Amy said...

How old is that kid, Ish?

redsock said...

looked 13-14.

nixon33 said...

they had a pitcure of ther wrong weaver!!

s1c said...

Ok Oki- one more out here Oki doke!!

Amy said...

OKI is OK tonight. But there he goes. Who's coming in? Papelbon now?

nixon33 said...

im confused, why pap?

tim said...

Whaddup all!

I'm here for the end - home for the first time in two weeks so hung out with my girlfriend for a bit tonight.

Caught the sweet-ass Cleveland Steamer Hafner laid on NYY's chest, though.

Snuffer being used in a non-save situation always makes me cringe...

ish said...

Snuffin' time already?

I don't like this. Prove me wrong, Pap. Make this a good move.

Colin said...

Wait Pap in now? Why does this raise red flags?

ish said...

How old is that kid, Ish?

17 years old.

redsock said...

Bot. Huh.

Was wondering if we'd see Dimmer.

Tito planning on gettin' a run in th e8th or 9th, I suppose.

Colin said...

Tito I hope you have a good plan otherwise I'm confiscating all of your dope.

Edward Lee said...

Snuffer being used in a non-save situation always makes me cringe...

Think of it as a "dammit, I really want to win this game" situation then.

Amy said...

OK, looks like we are all bewildered by Pap being called in now. Anyone have a theory? Why take out Oki? And not that I would like it, but what about Gagne?

ish said...

Very surprising here. Day off tomorrow, long time between outings for Papelbon... 2 out in the 8th. If the Sox don't tie it in the 9th, you'll have Gagné, Timlin, etc etc.

redsock said...

CINCO OCHO!

Sarah Gates said...

I have a papelboner.

Sarah Gates said...

What!?

Amy said...

Shit, Youk. Now you make an error?

tim said...

Yook :(

Amy said...

Oh, guess it was Lowell's throw.

Colin said...

I seriously wonder if Tito ever heard the phrase: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

redsock said...

no one named HOWIE will beat the bot.

nixon33 said...

what exactly is going on here?

tim said...

this is interesting....i dont think ive ever seen a PH mid-count.

s1c said...

Bear down bot. Concentrate on Rivera.

Amy said...

Changing batters in the middle of the at bat?

redsock said...

i love the PH move during an AB.

Colin said...

what exactly is going on here?

What I pray is not a repeat of a certain game...

Sarah Gates said...

Nix, beats the hell out of me.

thatdietcokegirl said...

i hate the stealing 3rd attempt. it's so bold.

nixon33 said...

nervous

tim said...

Bullshit!

s1c said...

Where was that pitch? Shoulda been K'd

Sarah Gates said...

I feel as though I have entered the twilight zone.

tim said...

Fucking bullshit!

nixon33 said...

jesus christ.

Colin said...

What still boggles my mind is why Bot is in when Oki was doing well? Is it that whole rest thing?

redsock said...

zone suddenly the size of a saltine.

FUCK YOU IASSONGA you asshat

Amy said...

This is making me crazy. WTF is Francona thinking? I don't want to watch this; I have a bad feeling.

thatdietcokegirl said...

this was a weird move by tito.

tim said...

A fucking man named CHONE is at bat. CHONE.

thatdietcokegirl said...

What still boggles my mind is why Bot is in when Oki was doing well? Is it that whole rest thing?

it's robot over-managing. it's like...'oh he pitched an inning and a third so it's time to take him out'

or, ya know, something ;/

Colin said...

This is not only stupid, but scary as well.

tim said...

{mortal kombat} FINISH HIM!!!!!

Colin said...

And more fucking stolen bases? JESUS!!!! WHY TITO WHY??? PAP COME ON! GET YOUR COMPOSURE TOGETHER!

tim said...

FUCK YES

tim said...

Ump rediscovered the strike zone?

s1c said...

Bot!!!! finally,

now lets score some runs !!!

Colin said...

Holy shit that was clutch. Nightmare averted for now...

thatdietcokegirl said...

but ya know, alls well that ends well. good move tito! ;))

redsock said...

looked worse than the 2 strikes that were called balls.

anyhoo

let's gets a run and end this shit.

Amy said...

OK, everyone, breathe. Now what? Bring him back for the ninth?? Bring in Gagne? I still don't get what Francona was thinking. And how many pitches did he throw?

tim said...

ON FIRE!!! due up...time for a nice, thick, juicy dong...

er...yeah. =/

nixon33 said...

HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE PAPEL-BALLS!

thatdietcokegirl said...

{mortal kombat} FINISH HIM!!!!!

LOL!

Colin said...

let's gets a run and end this shit.

Methinks you mean get runs and end this shit. With two innings left I'm still antsy in the pantsy.

Ben said...

Oh thank god. I should never have to feel that much relief over a Papelbon K!

nixon33 said...

i still am confused about the move to bring in pap in the 8th tie game, 2 out no one on.

Sir Jahmez said...

ish said...

I seriously wonder if Tito ever heard the phrase: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Reminds me of Game 1 of NLDS CHC/ARI when Lou Pinella took Carlos Zambrano out after 85 pitches and the man who relieved him coughed it up.

Luckily, Terry Francona got away with it.

Amy said...

Drew grounds out on first pitch. So annoying.

Colin said...

Come on Sox...do what you do best and feast on reliever flesh.

SoSock said...

C-mon ON FIRE!
Make us all look like idiots for doubting you - PLEASE!

Sir Jahmez said...

Whew - close call there in the 9th. I can't decide whether to put Jeter almost falling on his ass or Joba with Canadian soldiers all over him as my desktop picture. Decisions Decisions. Let's go Sox - finish this. Let's go TEK!

tim said...

Close one, Tek...

SoSock said...

How cool would that have been if Cap had won it with a walk-off?

Amy said...

Tek almost donged.

s1c said...

Fragging close for a dong for Tek!

Sarah Gates said...

Ump rediscovered the strike zone?

"Hmm... I KNOW I had that when I got here, where can I have put it? OH! There it is! The strike zone! Knew it would turn up..."

Amy said...

SoSock, it's only the 8th. No walkoff for Tek, even if he had hit it out.

redsock said...

TBS after Coco's fly out: "So we will go to the 9th..."

uhh, yeah, we will.

tim said...

Alright - let's make this quick, Pap. Not too messy, a clean and efficient papsmearing to the Angels in the 9th.

Amy said...

I noticed that also, RS. He must have been confused like Sosock. :)

ish said...

We need some serious snuffin' here in the 9th, Bot.

Strike zone's been a saltine all night.

tim said...

"Hmm... I KNOW I had that when I got here, where can I have put it? OH! There it is! The strike zone! Knew it would turn up..."

hahahaha

w00t - Dane Cook commercial!

Sarah Gates said...

Apparently EVERYONE was confused by Snuffer in the 8th. They just saw him and assumed it was the 9th already!

Coco, I totally agree with that sentiment...

Amy said...

Saltine? OK, Ish, I now know what ducks on the pond means, but saltine as the strike zone? Crackers??

Amy said...

Oh, you mean as small as a saltine?

tim said...

that summed it up..."iassholenia has been calling this pitch all night. it's not a strike - but he's been calling it."

Sarah Gates said...

One down, two to go, then a walk off by Slugo, and bedtime!

nixon33 said...

tim said...
that summed it up..."iassholenia has been calling this pitch all night. it's not a strike - but he's been calling it."

hahahaha

Amy said...

Sounds good to me, Sarah.

nixon33 said...

does gagne ptich next?
or timlin?

nixon33 said...

if we dont score that is,, which we will.

SoSock said...

Guess I jumped the gun calling for a walk-off in the 8th, huh?
Hey, I'll go with -"I knew if he hit it they couldn't score in the 9th, so same diff."
The high inside pitch - we'll take it, but as a coach I hate to see it called. Totally unfair to a hitter

Amy said...

Nixon, I can't bear the thought.

Sarah Gates said...

Ok, Amy, it's a plan.

Now will someone just let them know?

Amy said...

Shit, a walk? Come on.

nixon33 said...

NICE PITCHING PAPS!!!!

redsock said...

slugo pockets all 3 outs.

redsock said...

laura: "you walked a guy with one eye????"

Edward Lee said...

Not sure why Tek called for six straight splitters against Garret Anderson, but whatev.

Amy said...

OK, you guys better score because some people here have to work tomorrow and the rest of us are just tired and whiny.

ish said...

6 straight splitters to Anderson. Luckily he got Izturis quickly.

Walk-off time!

tim said...

ok lets get this done now boys.

s1c said...

This is it, walk off time, I don't know who and I don't know how, but it is walk off time (legs crossed, eyes crossed, fingers crossed etc).

nixon33 said...

OK WIN TIME

redsock said...

31 pit for bot.

thatdietcokegirl said...

6 straight splits by paps. and garrett didn't swing at the last 4 of em.

ish said...

Pinkeye is a good nickname for Anderson from now on, I think.

I see Gagné pitching the 10th if we get there. Depends on how many batters are used here.

ish said...

Lugo, Pedroia, Youk.

Sarah Gates said...

Slugo pockets all outs and now he's going to win this game. Right Amy?

thatdietcokegirl said...

laura: "you walked a guy with one eye????"

hahha. yah doesn't he have conjunctivitis or something?

Amy said...

Hmmm, blogger didn't let that one through, I think. Anyway, I was laughing out loud at Laura's line, and my dog looked at me like I was nuts.

SoSock said...

Who's next - Gag me?
Let's just end this so we don't have to know!

thatdietcokegirl said...

here we go!!

tim said...

This is it, walk off time, I don't know who and I don't know how, but it is walk off time (legs crossed, eyes crossed, fingers crossed etc).

Don't think we have much of a choice besides a walk off.

FUCK YEH SLUGO!!!!!!!!

s1c said...

slugo!!!!!!

nixon33 said...

ALL TOGETHER NOW:
"I HATE LUGO!"

YEEEEEAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Colin said...

Serious props to Lugo on a hell of a top half of an inning.

Edward Lee said...

Sweet, leadoff base hit. Let's hope Mike Scioscia decides to save K-Rod for a save situation.

Amy said...

Yes, see, Sarah? He's at least on base. And top of the order has three outs to bring him home so we can sleep easy tonight.
