WS 1: Red Sox 13, Rockies 1

Rockies - 010 000 000 - 1 6 0
Red Sox - 310 270 00x - 13 17 0
Josh Beckett was the shit once again (7-6-1-1-9, 93). Dustin Pedroia hit a home run to start the first inning -- the first rookie in World Series history to do so -- and J.D. Drew added a two-run double to give Boston a quick 3-0 lead.

Beckett relied almost exclusively on his fastball for the first four innings -- 39 of his first 40 pitches were heat ranging from 95 to 97. He had excellent control. He set up Todd Helton with a 12/6 curve for strike two in the second inning before getting him swinging at a fastball and his 0-2 off-speed pitch to Matt Holliday in the fourth was tapped to third.

Nine consecutive Red Sox batters reached base with two outs in the fifth -- three doubles, two singles and four walks, including three straight bases-loaded walks -- that pushed the lead from 6-1 to 13-1.

So ... Boston's last four games: 7-1, 12-2, 11-2, 13-1. Four wins by a combined score of 43-6!

And:
First team in postseason history to score 10+ runs in three straight games

13 Runs = New World Series Game 1 record

12 Runs = Largest margin of victory in World Series Game 1 (11: White Sox 1959 and Atlanta 1996)

Tied World Series record with nine extra-base hits (Pirates 1935)

Geez I'm glad they held Tek. That would not have been pretty.

So what is that -- 5 hits in the first 7 at bats? Wow.

Amy, Toronto is no big deal, nice city, but not so special. Montreal is an amazing place, I think. Like being in Europe.

I plan to travel all over Canada - eventually.

Dear Doctor...

laura k said...

And by doctor, of course I meant Slugo. Duh.

tim said...

Wow, nice play. Damn...

Noah said...

Man...nice play by the third baseman.

laura k said...

tough play, but 3-0, not a bad start!

brendotroy said...

Damn ... pretty good play (although not as amazing as TMcC would have you believe); would've been nice to get Tek home there. Still, great inning!

s1c said...

oh give me a fraggring break.

Still, I will take the 3-0 lead after the first.

First time this post season that the Rox have trailed by more than 1 run.

Amy said...

Montreal was wonderful. We had a great time there. Halifax reminded us of a little Boston. Nice seaport city. Nova Scotia was covered in fog when we were there, so it was hard to really see anything.

Toronto must look somewhat like NY since they seem to film so many "NY" movies in Toronto.

OK, back to the game. We have a 3-0 lead, Beckett struck out the side, and LBJ leads off the next inning. What could be better?

laura k said...

Toronto would like to be NY. But no.

s1c said...

Well, I thought toronto was nice, Montreal is a fun city, Calgary is always fun to visit during the Stampede but I loved Vancouver/victoria the best.

Rob said...

The rain is making me nervous.

laura k said...

Re Halifax reminding you of Boston, Atlantic/Eastern Canada is supposed to be very New England-like. Maine and New Brunswick are the same land mass. The accents sound a lot alike.

Let's get such a big lead we all start babbling off-topic. :)

laura k said...

Ish, there you are. I was wondering.

Rob said...

There is no end in sight for this rain.

laura k said...

I love the letter guys in the bleachers! BECKKKKETT

s1c said...

4 k's, any ideas on what the record is to start?

Thanks Tim I guess it is 5!

allan said...

17 fastballs -- then a beautiful curve for a called strike 2 -- then heat for the K.

KKK K

thatdietcokegirl said...

the webcast is so hellishly behind the tv broadcast.

looks like i gotta find some music to put on in the background cause i can't listen to dumb and dumberer..

(oh sweet. off the wall. whew)

Rob said...

Ish, there you are. I was wondering.

Well, I'm watching the game with my parents.

Jon Miller was truped. The cameras were truped. Therefore, I was truped.

laura k said...

Whew, thought it was a dong. A double, no biggie.

laura k said...

that damn delay, it's always the problem trying for tv w/ radio sound.

brendotroy said...

And here I was thinking, "the first ball hit into play is going to be a well-struck infield out." I'll shut up now. C'mon, Jobbers, just two more outs, here ...

Rob said...

WEEI is actually two seconds behind FOX. That's strange. Too bad I can just barely pick up the WEEI signal. All of the affiliates get ESPN Radio.

laura k said...

there goes the shut out

thatdietcokegirl said...

that damn delay, it's always the problem trying for tv w/ radio sound.

yup ;/

so i kinda wasted 5 bux lol. OH WELL ;)

uh-oh 3-1 (big deal?) ;p

Noah said...

Feast or famine tonight.

Amy said...

I am not liking the rain either. I bet this is affecting Beckett this inning. They wouldn't call a WS game for rain, would they?

s1c said...

Shit, I can't get the WTIC on the radio, but have gotten the jon miller / joe morgan cast. Joe Morgan, hmmm, not sure which is better morgan or mcCidiot.

brendotroy said...

The rain is making me nervous.

Agreed ... God must be trying to delay the game because Her team is behind ;-)

laura k said...

so i kinda wasted 5 bux lol.

Amy said...

Oh yeah, it is Seinfeld

laura k said...

Ofer said...

A groundout? I'm disappointed... not

Is Beckett as sharp as it seems from the results? Can't watch right now...

Rob said...

Shit, I can't get the WTIC on the radio, but have gotten the jon miller / joe morgan cast. Joe Morgan, hmmm, not sure which is better morgan or mcCidiot.

I'm almost certain that the FM WEEI station in Springfield's got Uncle Joe and Village Idiot Glenn, s1c. What is it... 105.5?

As for this inning, there was that hanging curve, which is understandable this early in the game... but then Tulowitzki just guessed right on the fastball. With as many fastballs as Beckett was throwing, Tulowitzki was being aggressive, looking for a fastball.

Might be a good idea if Josh mixed in a few changeups here and there.

allan said...

beckett very sharp. has thrown fastballs on 27 of 28 pitches, 5 k of the 6 outs. excellent command.

the first double was a poor pitch, but he is very strong.

i wonder if they might mix in the curve the next time thru.

Amy said...

The Springfield station is 105.5.

I am sure I am right about that one.

Amy said...

Rain seems to have let up.

thatdietcokegirl said...

without the lol, i might think you were canadian ;)

why's that?

s1c said...

WEEI in springfield is 105.5, however I am in a weird spot in the hartford area, so both of the WEEI are really, really static. At my house, if I went next door, I would get them fine. Usually that is no problem since WTIC is a hartford station.

Francis finding his groove?

laura k said...

why's that?

allan said...

can anyone remember any world series rain delays?

of a game -- not a strict ppd?

i cannot.

laura k said...

Amy said...

That's what I was asking about. I don't remember any, but my memory isn't too good for details.

s1c said...

Nope, I can't remember any delays.

Trivia note - last lead off home run in a world series. 1969 - Buford for the Orioles.

ohh, haha. show's how much i know about canadians ;)

yeah. 5 bux. if i smoked i'd light my cigarettes with them.

i'm just disappointed that it doesn't match up [and it should bloody just come in on the flaming radio!] lol, i'm all out of sorts.

but it's cool cause 4-1!!

tim said...

Back now.

Finally did my pregame shot - Didn't want to do it during the meal :P

Went down pretty smooth, not bad. Not bad.

And re: Canada

I can't wait to head out west to Vancouver - popular thing to do is to fly into Calgary and drive through the Rockies into Van/Victoria, or vice versa. Whistler's also supposed to be great (think Aspen...ski/snowboard capital of canada).

I've always wanted to do a cross-country drive, or hell, even a train ride. Just the fact that its like 20 hours to get out of Ontario (westward) from where I am is pretty ridic. I've heard the prairies are also a pretty tedious drive. Just flatlands with mountains in the far, far, far distance.

As for the east coast, a couple years back I did a Maine-New Brunswick-PEI-Nova Scotia trip, then back on THE CAT from Nova Scotia to Bah Hahbah. Was a great time, I loved Halifax and Nova Scotia. Been to Montreal and Quebec as well, (YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!) back when I was a little kid. It was pretty awesome as well, I've heard that Montreal is a "sister city" with Boston. I don't know, but yeah. That was part of a bigger trip up the coast of Lake Ontario...

Laura/Allan, you ever been to Gananoque/the Thousand Islands? I really enjoyed that as well.

Amy said...

From Wikipedia: 2003 Series: The game was interrupted in the seventh by a rain delay lasting 39 minutes. It was the first weather-related delay of a World Series game since game 3 of the 1993 World Series.

laura k said...

it seems almost impossible to believe no one has K'd the 1st 3 batters in a WS game til tonight. 102 previous WS, you'd think it would have been done before, you know?

Oh, Game 3, by the way.

Yes, 2003 WS was one I definitely did NOT want to see.

tim said...

of a World Series game since game 3 of the 1993 World Series.

I think I remember that one....was that the 15-14 game or something?

s1c said...

Actually Fox had as a record for consecutive K's being 5 done by a bunch of pitchers. Koufax was one of them. Am checking out baseball reference to see what I can find.

Ron said...

I swear Fox showed a graphic that said the record was first 5 batters K'd (done twice, and one was Sandy Koufax).

Did I misread it? Maybe it was consecutive K's in the WS or something.

Amy said...

Lots of Series games with rain delays. Too many for me to list.

brendotroy said...

you ever been to Gananoque

My gf and I did a last-minute, ostensibly romantic weekend in Gananoque and were not impressed. The 1,000 Islands were gorgeous, and the little cruise we took around them was beautiful, but the actual town of Gananoque seemed made for retirees, not young people. All we wanted to do was have a nice dinner and bring a bottle of wine back to our whirlpool suite, but nearly every restaurant had closed their kitchen (this was 9ish on a weekend night), and all the liquor stores were shuttered! Beautiful but best experienced on a pensioner's schedule, I guess ...

/OT: Go Sox! Ha ha ...

allan said...

one of the funniest jos comments of all time.

consecutive K versus consecutive K to start a game, maybe?

tim said...

I think I remember that one....was that the 15-14 game or something?

I'll answer myself - Nope. That was game 4, where in Philly, the Jays pitcher, Todd Stottlemyer, decided to belly flop into third base after he got on base and someone else got a hit, and cut his chin all up.

Rob said...

Low strike zone tonight. Though, that third ball was a above the belt. First two were closer.

Ron said...

Through two, Francis has 58 pitches, 34 for stikes. Beckett 28-20.

tim said...

Yeah, the main thing I remember about that trip was the cruise around the islands. The city wasn't anything special, but I did enjoy the cruise.

Tim, I finally found your comment re Canada and Ganonoque :)

I want to do the cross-country thing here too - but probably in two parts, from here west, then from here east.

Ontario is just too fucking big! It's insane.

We haven't been to Ganonoque or however it is spelled.

Montreal is nothing like Boston. It is more like Paris than anything in the US.

-"The Indian guy" (LBJ) - thinks he's smokin'!
-"That guy that looks like he's a dad" (Dr. Doubles)
-"That pitcher thats so fat" (G38)
-"The guy everyone likes" (Yook) - was impressed with the Yooking at fenway
-"Redneck" - Timlin
-"Scary man" - Snuffer
and of course
"DICE-K!!!!!" (she had to put up with me rantin' and ravin' about it ever since they won the rights to negotiate)

laura k said...

Re LBJ, I keep thinking, can you imagine being a rookie call up and starting in the WS? Damn.

Amy said...

I agree that Montreal is not like Boston. Montreal has much more of a big city, cosmopolitan feel. Boston still feels like a town where everyone knows everyone, even though that's far from true. Boston has lots of water and feels like a port; Old Montreal feels Parisian; new Montreal feels more like a little NY.

Ron said...

Doctor flashing the glove!!
