WS 1: Red Sox 13, Rockies 1

Rockies - 010 000 000 - 1 6 0
Red Sox - 310 270 00x - 13 17 0
Josh Beckett was the shit once again (7-6-1-1-9, 93). Dustin Pedroia hit a home run to start the first inning -- the first rookie in World Series history to do so -- and J.D. Drew added a two-run double to give Boston a quick 3-0 lead.

Beckett relied almost exclusively on his fastball for the first four innings -- 39 of his first 40 pitches were heat ranging from 95 to 97. He had excellent control. He set up Todd Helton with a 12/6 curve for strike two in the second inning before getting him swinging at a fastball and his 0-2 off-speed pitch to Matt Holliday in the fourth was tapped to third.

Nine consecutive Red Sox batters reached base with two outs in the fifth -- three doubles, two singles and four walks, including three straight bases-loaded walks -- that pushed the lead from 6-1 to 13-1.

So ... Boston's last four games: 7-1, 12-2, 11-2, 13-1. Four wins by a combined score of 43-6!

And:
First team in postseason history to score 10+ runs in three straight games

13 Runs = New World Series Game 1 record

12 Runs = Largest margin of victory in World Series Game 1 (11: White Sox 1959 and Atlanta 1996)

Tied World Series record with nine extra-base hits (Pirates 1935)
The final half-inning, courtesy of Eric Gagne:

like coke in cans. i HATE coke in bottles. hate it ;)

I've drunk beer in cans tons of times: when I was underaged, and a 30-pack (or "30 rack", or "thirsty pack") was cheap and splittable, and when I'm feeling cheap and/or ornery at the bar in my town that sells $1.50 PBRs, pretty much less than half the price of any other alcohol for sale ...

I'm sure if we tack on a few more the goddamn Boone highlight is gonna come up.

Tim, you really do NOT want a Taco Bell taco. Stick with the spinach.

The way the Red Sox are playing tonight, I still don't see them sweeping this series, which is okay by me. As long as they win, that's all that matters to me. I'd love to see the final out be in Fenway Park, personally.

The interesting thing with this World Series is how completely different the two ballparks are, and then you add in the AL and NL rules, and it gives Colorado an enormous advantage when they get home.

That's why you really want to see the Sox get the first two games, make sure to win one in Denver, then come back and win it at Fenway. A sweep would be good too, but I'm torn as a Red Sox fan and as a baseball fan. 21-1 then get swept?

Ron said...

Giuliani must be ecstatic tonight, his team is kicking ass.

Gambrinus said...

there's a brewery in lyons, co called oskar blues that promotes beer in cans. they claim that can technology has come a long way, and they're now equivilent to bottles.

i have to say...they make a strong argument based on the quality of their beer.

allan said...

hey, i didn't say i've never drunk beer in cans! when i was like 15, 16. but i grew up, what can i tell ya.

i.e. another walk by the rockies staff!

Historic Ernie Shore Field (sic)has beer in cans, tall cans, but I get Coronas, which they pour into cups.
Forgot just how much you taste the can till they ran out of C's one day this past summer and I got a Yuenglng. Never even knew they MADE Yuengling in cans till then

Soda, in order of container preference:

1. Glass Bottle
2. Aluminum Can
3. Plastic Bottle

Same goes for beer, but certain beers just scream "Drink me from a can!"

Natural Light, High Life, all the crap we drank in college (Milwaukee's Best!)

Lord Lynch said...

Beer in cans - parties and cricket (until they banned them).

allan said...

laura k said...

i can't drink soda in any container. i don't know how anyone does. that stuff is just gross.

but as for what we drank in college... well, that doesn't bear listing, does it.

Rob said...

OK, no one wants to talk about who to take out in CO.

Depends on today and tomorrow. I think in any event, Lowell, Youk, and Ortiz will each play 2 and sit one. Do sort of a round-robin sort of thing. Ortiz 1B, Lowell 3B; Ortiz 1B Youk 3B; Youk 1B, Lowell 3B. Something like that.

nixon33 said...

i like this coco in center move. get some at bats and maybe he'll get some hits?

s1c said...

allan said...

beckett in game 5?

WHAT game 5????

Ron said...

Guiness is better in cans, actually (unless you can get it draft, of course). But those Pub Draught cans with the nitro doo-hicky are yummy.

tim said...

$1.50 PBRs,

Is it bad that I just got a pre-emptive papelboner based on that :P

Why hello OcOc, would you like some RBI too? or R-W-I perhaps?

I'm glad its surprising that Beckett is still out there. Like fuck, the guys only thrown 60 pitches or something. At least let him work a BIT OF A SWEAT! it's only fair!

OK, no one wants to talk about who to take out in CO.

I posted about this earlier and didn't get any sort of response :P

Lord Lynch said...

3 innings of relief to end the game, which his team won.

Ron said...

2 young kids = don't get out much. But you should give those Guiness Pub Draughts a shot - not as good as tap, but you might be surprised.

tim said...

lol, well i'm IN college so i should be excused!

i'll buy tall cans, but pour them into a nice glass (i have a pint glass, tall cans = a pint, they fit perfectly) but other than that, it's all bottles. i'll rarely buy regular sized cans.

you know its a good game when we're discussing bevy containers!

as for pop...cans are ideal, but i buy 2 liter bottles for home now (the big ones, for you folks in the states)...ive basically stopped drinking it except for the odd glass now and again, and I'm drinking diet now.

Jeter mentioned during a Red Sox - Non-Yankees game - Drink!

YES! Until he fell off the face of the earth, haha. Before the 2004 World Series win, Ricky Craven won a race in Darlington, SC and that was the single best sports day for my family.

Of course, it was really only because Craven was from Maine. And that was before I figured out that people outside of Maine were relevant too. There's some strange brainwashing thing going on in Maine, where it seems like everywhere else either doesn't exist or is an inferior land.

But I digress.

So, Game One was a easy one. I foresee good things ahead.

That is SO dumb. This whole history of big wins in Game 1. So damn annoying.

chris myers, asking the tough questions to youk.

"is there any danger in winning by such a huge margin?"

Ken Rosenthal is short. Like, my size short.

love the "Tek" on Tek's vest!

laura k said...

good night all! see you tomorrow :)

Amy said...

Tek: He was good, he was good. Re Beckett.

He seemed a little unsure there. Weird.

Hey - FOX GOT SOMETHING RIGHT!!
They interviewed TEK !
Call a real news station, quick!

Ok, here is the down not caveat to this win.

This year the Sox have only won 5 games in a row three times. The last time 7/20 to 7/24. Can they win 5 in a row in the playoffs?

I say yeah boy!!!

I am off to bed. Hope to be back in my hotel to watch Game 2 tomorrow night. Made sure I had wireless in the room, so see you then!

hehe, tek. in his hat. always :)

night l-girl!

ps. i think tek was just like 'uh, yeah of course he was good idiot' but didn't wanna say that.

Ron said...

I think Tek was trying to think of something to say beyond "He was good." The second time he said it, it more like "He was good."

Gambrinus said...

well, i don't like overconfidence, but i'm feeling like by the time this gets back to coors field, the rockies will have about 2 fans left (which is about where they were a week before the postseason started).
