Pedroia Played Last Two Months With Broken Hamate Bone

Dustin Pedroia tells the Herald's Rob Bradford that he played the final two months of the season with a cracked hamate bone in his left hand.

The injury was first discovered during an MRI/bone scan on September 10. DP underwent surgery last Tuesday and is now wearing a soft cast. Herald:
"Some days I would wake up and it would be hard to grip a bat. I changed my grip a little bit on the bat and went from there. It was just one of those things you know you have to take care of after the season, but you have to play through. A lot of guys have done that." ...

The surgery was performed by Dr. Donald Sheridan in Scottsdale, Ariz. According to Pedroia, when Sheridan went in to remove the bone it crumbled, suggesting more activity might have led to further complications.

Wow. That was probably at the very bottom on the list of things I was expecting to read on this blog this morning.

Wily Mo was out for what, a month? Two months? Same thing.

I do snicker a bit about it, because of how that's usually an injury that a slugger sustains. And it happens to... Pedroia. It's not surprising, but it's funny.

Amazing some of the things that really don't get picked up by the press during a season.

That is amazing. I think Ryan Zimmerman had the same injury. It's a cliched phrase at this point, but if he wasn't one before, Pedroia is definitely a "dirt dog" now.

Well, he does refer to his at-bats as "the laser show".

Well, Pedroia swings the bat as hard as any slugger, relative to his body.

I think it's amazing, especially since he hit all those (relative) home runs late!

Just another pedro legacy.

Other people checking their gmail on my computer is annoying. It means I end up accidentally commenting using their names.

So, this time, the message posted by Amanda, was me.

I LOVED it when he did the little bat-flip on that 2-run dong he hit into the monster seats on Game 7 of the ALCS. Fuck yeah.
