G2: Athletics 5, Red Sox 1

Red Sox - 000 001 000 - 1 5 0
Athletics - 013 000 01x - 5 9 1
Harden (6-3-1-3-9, 95) was tough to hit and Lester (4-5-4-3-4, 83) was tough to watch. Emil Brown atoned for his base-running blunder yesterday by smacking a three-run dong to left in the third. Manny hit a solo shot with two outs in the sixth. Other hits: two singles from Lowell, a single from Lugo and a double from Crisp. David Aardsma pitched 1.2 innings (1 H, 3 K) and looked very good.

156 hours and change until the next regular season pitch.

***

Jon Lester (2007 ERA+ 104) / Rich Harden (2007 ERA+ 171 (25.2 IP))

Red Sox Athletics

Dustin Pedroia, 2B Travis Buck, RF
Kevin Youkilis, 1B Mark Ellis, 2B
David Ortiz, DH Daric Barton, 1B
Manny Ramirez, LF Mike Sweeney, DH
Mike Lowell, 3B Emil Brown, LF
Brandon Moss, RF Bobby Crosby, SS
Jason Varitek, C Jack Hannahan, 3B
Coco Crisp, CF Kurt Suzuki, C
Julio Lugo, SS Chris Denorfia, CF
Francona said Lyndon's back is okay, Coco was going to play today regardless. Drew's back is no worse, but the team is playing it safe, since they have a 10-hour flight to California coming up.

Also, SoSH TaLK on Yook's cut-off in the 10th inning of Game 1.

seriously, i would love to see manny pushing a big ol' copier through the airport.

Ron said...

So what happens at 400 comments?

laura k said...

Careful Jere, you might be channeling Tim McCarver.

Zenslinger said...

I hate to say it, but Foulke looks awfully good this year...like 2004.

Good for him and for the A's. I like the A's. Except...y'know, right now. And next week...

laura k said...

Chief, for some reason, Blogger is giving us a new page for every 200 comments. A new thing - we discovered it yesterday.

Ron said...

Oh, wasn't it 100 comments yesterday? I thought maybe we all got bagels or something :-)

allan said...

corey in again -- as the bullpen try-out continues.

laura k said...

Nah, every 200. Mmm, bagels. We're going out for bfast after the game. I'm so hungry.

Jere said...

wait, why am I channeling McCarver?

Rob said...

i got a bagel during the sixth inning.

Zenslinger said...

No Sox pitcher has had a clean inning or outing, apparently.

Zenslinger said...

OH, Aardsma did.

SoSock said...

Shit - at least get the damn out!

Jere said...

Whenever I hear that female voice on the stadium PA, I think of this.

Joe Grav said...

nooo

laura k said...

Jere, your sun comment, he says stuff like that all the time, uses a word then says it a different way... hard to explain (or I can't think of an example right now.)

But yours was cute and his never are, so don't worry.

allan said...

lowell
moss
tek

SoSock said...

I'll be stopping by the bagel shop in just a few, on my way to the job that is pulling me away from the game - dammit.
At least it's not a nail-biter.
See ya next week!

Jack Marshall said...

That might be the end for Corey, given how Aardsma looked. Too bad...at 34, he's running out of chances.

allan said...

mccarverism: "you've seen american idol, well, derek jeter is never idle on the bases."

Joe Grav said...

OK, it's Embree. Be patient.

Jere said...

oh, I see. Like, "Piazza weaing the larger catcher's mitt today...and he'll have to 'catch up mit' this German fireballer." (say in deliberate, McCarver-ish voice)

Jere said...

Good start, Lowell!

allan said...

yo hombre, be a pal, give us some runs.

Joe Grav said...

I would like to see one of those patented half-innings where the Japanese crowd starts singing and whistling and banging drums.

Casey.

Jack Marshall said...

Lowell
Moss
And a pinch-hitter for Tek, with anyone managing but Francona.

laura k said...

Yeah, that's it. Sorry to say, he's poisoned that whole sentence structure.

Jere said...

Mayor of Dongtown, come on!

laura k said...

Jack, that's bullshit and you know it. I mean Susie.

You think the rest of the league managers are so much better? Ha.

Ha, I say. Susie.

Joe Grav said...

We sent up a left handed pinch hitter to face a lefty? And we're not pinch hitting for Varitek?

laura k said...

LOL

Mayor of Dongington

Joe Grav said...

suck

Jere said...

Casey's actually faster than I thought he was. Lowell woulda been halfway to first when the ball got there.

Joe Grav said...

The worst part about this is having to wait until Monday to do it again, so you can't just say 'let's get 'em tomorrow!'

Can we pretend the exhibition games this weekend are real?

laura k said...

Sure, go ahead. New spin on fantasy baseball.

allan said...

does embree have a reverse split? or maybe he wanted casey to get an AB.

AND YOU DON'T PITCH HIT FOR THE CAPTAIN!! HE HAS A "C" ON HIS CHEST FOR A REASON!!!

Jere said...

Varitek, line one to the outfield. THen, next four guys get hits.

Jere said...

Wrong.

Jere said...

I'll take a split.

laura k said...

Oh well, get 'em [insert correct day of next game here].

Nice seeing y'all this a.m.

allan said...

9 AM -- exactly 157 hours until the next regular season pitch.

Ron said...

Night everyone!

Zenslinger said...

Yargh.

Ah well, win some, lose some.

Nap time for me.

Good morning, all!

laura k said...

Time for breakfast. Comments will sit for a while.

Jere said...

The LA Coliseum game should be fun.

Rob said...

no worries.

we'll all be back here late on tuesday night and do it again.

until then, enjoy the exhibitions in LA.

allan said...

screw it -- yanks still in last.

Jack Marshall said...

Good, Terry---pinch hit for the guy that hit the game-tying homer in the 9th yesterday with another left-handed batter, but stick with Varitek. Shrewd.

The team needs a right-handed pinch-hitter badly.

Jack Marshall said...

Thank-you for the edifying discourse, Renaldo and colleagues

---Redsock: maybe they should change that "C" to a "K"...

---Renaldo: you are right, of course. Other managers are stupid that way too.

Love, Clara.

Benjamin said...

This is doubly an away series, being both a Japan and Oakland game, right? So a split so far isn't so bad....

Ok, I got nothing.

Zenslinger said...

Ok, I got nothing.

Well, I got a ticket to Tuesday in Oakland, so there's something.

Rob said...

i just had a three hour nap and it's 1:00 in the afternoon. that's something, too, i guess.

baseball, breakfast, three hour nap. and it's only 1pm. it's been interesting to say the least, but i'll be happy to get back to proper start times.

nixon33 said...

hey everyone! tough one today, but its still beautiful that the season has started.
maybe when they return to normal hours i will join in the gamethreads.

laura k said...

Hey Nix! We were wondering when you would be around. You and 9Casey have been AWOL from these morning game threads. See you 'round.

guy tied for the MLB lead in HR gets sent down to the minors - ha.

andy said...

ok this is my first post of the season as I have just completed watching my DVR'ed game 2. I see manny is finally on anti-depressants. Hopefully he didn't get them from Canseco. I am calling 45+ HR's for MBM. I am not impresses nor have I ever been with Lester. DiceK will get his shit together like he did after the first 2 runs. He will have a real man season. Fuck Yeah is a guy I just want to be friends with. Youk looks scary. I feels like everyone is all business. Hopefully they can get into a fun rhythm not a work rut.

Rob said...

CHB:

"Cadillac Manny already has five RBIs, an extra million yen, and a new Ricoh color copier ("Gonna put it in my house, man") from his MVP performance in the opener, but his posing at home plate is out of control. A price would have been paid in the old days. Not now. But prepare for some 400-foot singles."

SoSock said...

Where the hell is everyone?
I't's almost 8am. The game should be going to the 6th inning or so by now
Oh, wait.....

laura k said...

L-G:

"CHB already has 50,000 pre-scripted words written about Manny, but his posing as an actual writer is out of control. A large audience would have been earned in the old days. Not now. Prepare for a clown that no one reads."

allan said...

Heh.

But prepare for some 400-foot singles.

It was actually a double, it was going to be a double no matter what, and the play was not to that base, so he slid in unchallenged. But ... whatever. Don't let what actually happened get in the way of your view of reality.

(Note: His Mummy on that hit was a bit much. I wish he'd save it for hits that travel 500+ feet -- I also wish Yook would quit bitching about called strikes.)

laura k said...

I also wish Yook would quit bitching about called strikes.

Me too. But that doesn't matter, because Yook is a dirt dog and Manny is a prima donna space cadet.

andy said...

There were balls that all the players thought were gonna go out but didn't. There was some weird air dynamics in that dome. Maybe if manny hit before youk then he would still be standing there as youk was complaining then they could walk away together.
