UPDATE: Varitek is a feeling better, so the Red Sox called up Craig Hansen instead.

The poor quality of the writing? Yes. I mean, the guys names the two teams, but says absolutely nothing about what league it is. Minor league? Independent League? Beer-league softball? ... Christ, Matt James, do the effing basics.

Actually, while reading the story, I was thinking, he turned 34? That's it?

All careers end -- and he had a better one than most. And from a Red Sox perspective, one of the best.

Yikes. No doubt about THAT. Yuck. My dad is always lamenting the poor quality of the clippings he gets with job applications, and if that's any indication, I totally understand his position!

Though The Fresno Bee is still one of my favorite newspaper names. That and the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
