G13: Red Sox 8, Yankees 5

Yankees - 001 300 010 - 5 8 1
Red Sox - 304 000 01x - 8 11 0
This game had a late-September intensity to it -- and after the first two games of this weekend series were played in under three hours, this battle clocked in at a more normal 3:56.

Neither starter was very impressive. Hughes faced 15 batters. Nine reached base, seven scored; the other two runners were left on 3rd. Hughes threw 39 pitches in the first inning and 65 in his 2+ innings (4 batters into the 3rd) of work. Dice was better, but underwhelming (5-5-4-6-2). He threw a whopping 116 pitches (14-21-25 32-24).

Boston led 7-1 after three innings, but the lower half of the Yankees lineup rallied in the fourth against Dice to cut the lead to 7-4.

The turning point of the game came in the top of the eighth, with Boston holding onto that 7-4 lead. Mike Timlin took the ball from David Aardsma, who had thrown two no-hit innings, and for the second time in two appearances, Timlin gave no evidence that he belongs in Boston's bullpen. Timlin faced the same three Yankees he saw on Friday night. Jason Giambi took him deep on Friday and HGH belted another home run tonight, cutting the Sox lead to 7-5. Jose Molina (doubled on Friday) singled and Alberto Gonzalez (sac bunt) also singled. And in 11 pitches, New York went from being three runs down to having the possible lead run at the plate.

Javier Lopez came in and, after throwing a strike past a non-bunting Johnny Damon, got a ground ball to second. Dustin Pedroia charged it, tagged pinch-runner Melky Cabrera and threw to first for the double play. Wilson Betemit, who had run for Molina, went to third, but he stayed there and watched Robinson Cano (bffffbb) grounded out to Pedroia.

Joe Girardi's substitutions in that inning meant that Jorge Posada, who had been DHing because of a "dead arm", had to catch. Coco Crisp led off against Kyle Farnsworth with a single to center and he took off for second on the first pitch to Julio Lugo. Posada did not bother to throw. Lugo flied to right and Crisp was able to tag and advance to third. Jacoby Ellsbury gave the Sox an important insurance run with a sacrifice fly to center. Dustin Pedroia singled and, on the first pitch to JD Drew, he tried to steal. Again Posada did not attempt a throw. (Sox radio guy Dave O'Brien noted that after Farnsworth's last warm-up pitch before the inning began, Posada's throw to second base took two hops to get there.)

In the ninth, Lopez retired Bobby Abreu on a grounder to short before Manny Delcarmen came in. MDC fanned Alex Rodriguez and got Hideki Matsui to grounded to Pedroia.

Boston improved to 7-6 and left after the game for a night flight to Cleveland. New York slipped to 6-7 -- and fell into sole possession of last place in the AL East.

Yes, and CBS may be paying for playing politics on that, if Rather succeeds in his lawsuit, which has at least survived a motion to dismiss.

To be fair, M&M also do a lot of Manny worship.

Go, Manny!

andy said...

some strings of words are together with no spaces. It's not every word but there is atleastoneof these strings on each line.

s1c said...

We need to score here boys. Get that run right back and then as Tito says, tack on.

allan said...

Manny keepin' on!

Benjamin said...

Woo.

s1c said...

Youk!!!!!

Amy said...

YOOUUKKKKK!!!

Amy said...

Tacking on for sure here. :)

Had to pop in long enough to say it -
YOOOOOOOK!

Wife has the laptop :(

s1c said...

Understatement of the night - "Damon does not have a strong arm"

The Mayor!!!!!

Amy said...

Time for the bullpen.

Benjamin said...

What's the shirt "L.M.B. Yanks" mean?

andy said...

Morgan 380 ft double play was awesome.
Manny scoring from second is always awesome.

allan said...

buh-bye franchise. ... kid looks like he might be cursed.

andy said...

lick balls?

allan said...

o'brien: "damon's throw trickles into the infield"

allan said...

laura is pissed. did nothing all day, then got work at 7:45. hoping to finish and leave at 10 and catch the rest at home.

Benjamin said...

Makes more sense than "Lois McMaster Bujold".

Amy said...

Tell Laura I miss her....

No idea what LMB means. But maybe Andy is right?

s1c said...

B's go to their second straight overtime game. At least this time they actually had a lead for first time in like "FOREVER".

Need a big hit here Slugo

Benjamin said...

Ha ha.

Amy said...

Morgan telling us why we have minor leagues.

Another PB! Funny how they aren't focused on what Posada would have done. Guess he isn't as loved as Jeter.

s1c said...

Time for LBJ to provide some excitement!

Amy said...

LBJ!!

s1c said...

LBJ!!!

andy said...

just an average night so far.

allan said...

Hughes faced 15 batters
9 reached base
7 scored; the other 2 reached 3rd

s1c said...

Amy - c'mon, you have to get with the program, I always use 3 !!!

Benjamin said...

"Daisuke's been almost unhittable this season. What's the difference tonight?"

Uh, no difference?

Amy said...

LOL, s1c! I was going to comment on the fact that you had one more exclamation point than I did.

Nice sign supporting Papi in the stands.

Patrick said...

Unfortunately, my radio is too far away from my computer to listen to with sleeping people in the house.

Still, I felt compelled to stop in and give a quick

HELL YA!

andy said...

Ellsbury woulda caught it

allan said...

i wonder if it will time for some schadenfreude tomorrow

Amy said...

Did Crisp misjudge the ball, as per Miller? Or could he just not have gotten the ball anyway?

SoSock said...

So, Laura's Boy really came thru!
I wish I had DVR'ed the game. I would love to show my kids that swing as the perfect example of how to attack an inside pitch. Sweet!
And 7 runs in 2+ innings. Aren't those Yankee fans damn glad now they didn't give up this Hughes phenom for some over-the-hill guy like Santana!

Amy said...

Hi, Sosock. Did you get possession of the laptop? Or just a drop in?

Amy said...

DiceK never likes pitching with MOB.

Patrick said...

If you look on yahoo sports at the box score of the LA, Seattle game, you'll see that Jeff Mathis accounted for 11 runs, 2 of which were for Seattle.

andy said...

When did hughes ever prove himself? why all the hype?

Amy said...

Nice K from Dice K!

s1c said...

That is a hard play in CF. Right over your head, he broke back automatically so I say it was one of those just out of reach plays.

Amy said...

That was my take on the Crisp play. Another reason I think Miller is biased.

allan said...

got an ugly job, but it's due in the AM. so i'll stay with the game for now.

Benjamin said...

Crisp wasn't running full tilt at the wall until the end, but I can't judge whether he should've been.

s1c said...

Need a K dice-K

Amy said...

Hard to believe it is only the 4th inning.

Come on, DiceK, get it together. I said your bad inning was the first inning.

andy said...

its a fucking sunday. do you work for satan?

Amy said...

Andy, please don't call lawyers the devil. We hear enough of that. :)

allan said...

it is much quieter here on the weekends than it was in nyc. sometimes it was a zoo there.

Benjamin said...

Not keeping our pitch count down, here.

Amy said...

Foulfoulfoulfoulfoul. Arrgghh.

OK, trivia question of the game: what is the record for fouls in an at bat?

Amy said...

SHIT!

I hate Miller's joy.

s1c said...

Lawyers aren't satan, at least satan will buy your soul! :)

allan said...

OK, trivia question of the game: what is the record for fouls in an at bat?

No one knows. There are stories of various hitters in the 40s and 50s fouling off close to 20 pitches, but they have never been proven, afaik. I am skeptical.

Amy said...

Tavarez up. Miller saying we should be worrying that we don't have Pap or Oki available, even though we have a four run lead.

THough Joe thinks we have a five run lead.

I am getting way too testy.

Benjamin said...

22?

Amy said...

20 seems doable. It certainly seems like I have seen more than ten many times.

Only a three run lead.

Benjamin said...

That sac fly apparently had a negative WPA value.

Jack Marshall said...

If the Red Sox blow this game, it will haunt me every second of my life for the next 50 years. Well, maybe not EVERY second...

Rob said...

woo!! Bruins actually won a game against Montreal! Overtime!

And the Red Sox are winning so far... Right now, if you're a Boston sports fan, you're on top of the world, if only for a couple of nights.

Amy said...

Finally. Will Dice be back?

Hope we get back those three runs.

allan said...

back in '01 or '02, i went thru the pbp every day and kept track of long at bats. i think the longest of the year was 18.

andy said...

I would not consider lawyers the devil. Lawyers who wont let this man watch this goddamn game are the devil.

Jack Marshall said...

By the way, Amy, I did get to listen to Dave Campbell and the other idiot on ESPN radio. I listened for three minutes and 23 seconds, and heard THIS: "And Eric Gagne got is third save of the game in the 9th."

allan said...

3 saves in one game!!!! why did we ever let that guy go?

Benjamin said...

Folks on the internet say Bill James said Roy Thomas hit 22 foul balls at the turn of the century.

Amy said...

Third save of the game! Wow, that is tricky.

Of course, with Gagne, even one save a game is fairly tricky. I sure do NOT miss him.

Jack Marshall said...

Amy, Dice-K will be back, unless there's something wrong with him. Bet on it. There's a little bit of MacNamara in Tito. He'll risk the game to get his pitcher a win.
I'd put him back in, too.

Amy said...

Nice move there by Manny.

I bet you are right, Jack. DiceK may have gotten his bad inning over with now for sure. Plus who would we trust more at this point in the game?

Benjamin said...

Youk.

Amy said...

YOUUKKKK !!!

s1c said...

Ok, it is time for the MAYOR to continue his hot hitting.

Benjamin said...

If we put some more runs up, then no reason not to bring Matsusaka back out.

Amy said...

(Notice 3 exclamation points this time, s1c.)

Benjamin said...

I'm not convinced Sean Casey's facial hair works for him. Washes out his eyes.

Rob said...

If we put some more runs up, then no reason not to bring Matsusaka back out.

Hopefully that was more of a fluke inning, because if you go to the bullpen now... This could be a barn burner for the rest of the way out.

s1c said...

I noticed Amy!!!

Benjamin said...

Bases loaded with Tek up. Uh oh.

s1c said...

Oh Gawd, Tek up with the bases loaded. Well, time to go to the john, because this inning is almost over.

Amy said...

Hmmm, Tek up, bases loaded. Please, Tek, get the ball in the air at a minimum. No DP!

Benjamin said...

qhwtgoijeoigjwoeigjoi

Amy said...

FUCK. I saw that coming.

Benjamin said...

He should be back out regardless; just that there would've been no reason not to (rather than insufficient reason).

Amy said...

What does Morgan mean about young pitchers not knowing how to pitch with a lead?

Benjamin said...

Sit.

Amy said...

Good try by Casey. Stupid cameras.

Benjamin said...

Apparently "not walking batters" is a strategy you don't learn until you're a veteran.

Peter Gammons without makeup looks really old.

s1c said...

one more out here Daisuke.

allan said...

What does Morgan mean about young pitchers not knowing how to pitch with a lead?

Whatever it is, it's moronic. It makes no sense. Pitchers get to the big leagues without pitching with a lead???

Amy said...

OK, so Morgan's comment was as dumb as it sounded. THought maybe I was missing something. Does he think DiceK was trying to walk the batters?

allan said...

I imagine Morgan would say something about smart veterans knowing how to not give up a lead but these new pitchers today just stupidly give runs back.

Amy said...

One more strike, Dice. You can do it.

s1c said...

Give me a fragging break. Get the third out.

allan said...

I assume at a time like this, the announcers are not waxing poetic about Tek's superhuman ability to handle a pitcher.

Amy said...

Ugh.

allan said...

Get the 'roid gobbler. NOW!

allan said...

AAArsdma up and ready.

Amy said...

No love for Tek. Love for Posada though.

(Even I am not feeling much love for Tek right now. Did he have to swing at the first pitch?)

Benjamin said...

Good. Done.

Rob said...

Juice guy can't get it done.

s1c said...

Finally!!!

allan said...

not bahsing tek. just that the praise is way out of proportion. or they only praise it when it works,

Benjamin said...

Actually, they were slavering pretty hard over Tek's pitch calling.

s1c said...

Tek's superhuman ability to handle a pitcher.

JM - "I have to give Varitek credit here..."

pure poetry from JM.

Patrick said...

Let's get that hard working Dice man a win, boys.

Patrick said...

With Timlin, Lopez, and Taverez ready to go, this win is a sure thing.

allan said...

PC for Dice: 14-21-25 32-24 = 116

Sheesh.

s1c said...

Now they are talking about the SB. All of those sluggers and it was the SB that allowed them to win the WS.

Base stealers have a profound impact on the game - JM

Amy said...

Which JM? Morgan or Miller? I try not to listen to everything they say.

Now talking about the Dave Roberts steal so I am listening.

Patrick said...

bottom of the order looking their part.

Patrick said...

Ughh. This is looking like another long Yankee/Red Sox grinder. These are so hard to sit through.

Amy said...

Hard to sit through? These games are never dull. How can you say that?

My only problem is that tomorrow is a work day for me.

s1c said...

Yankee/Red Sox grinder

Grinders are the norm, the under 3:30 games are the abnormalities.

Amy said...

If anyone likes acrostics, the one in the NYTimes magazine today had lots of baseball references.

Rob said...

curse of the middle relief.

Amy said...

I am sick of all these walks.

Patrick said...

I'm glad I shut off the radio. I'm sure Joe and Dave would be stressing more and more the significance of all these walks.

s1c said...

Ish - where you been? How about them bruins!!!

Patrick said...

Does Abreu make anyone else cringe when he comes up to bat?

s1c said...

Lets get some runs boys!!!

Amy said...

OK, let's get a few more insurance runs. I am not trusting our pitching.

Benjamin said...

Aardsma was giving me an aaneurism there, but we got through it.

Patrick said...

woo hooo!!!! Thank you Aardvark.

Amy said...

Did the Bruins win a game?

Benjamin said...

Hawkins in for Ohlendorf. Folks are hitting .417 off Hawkins this April.

Amy said...

Shit! How did that happen? Damn it.

Benjamin said...

Uh, nice hit, Pedroia. :/

SoSock said...

Fuck NO

Amy said...

Boy, you could hear Pedroia loud and clear.

Patrick said...

Will that be what we call "pulling a Dustin"?

Benjamin said...

That would've been a DP ball if Pedroia hadn't gotten out, I suppose.

Allen said...

A little cameo appearance by the '07 Drew, 4-3.

Amy said...

First six innings took three hours. Will the last three take 90 minutes? Not sure I can stay awake that late.

SoSock said...

I am not real enthusiastic about this lead with no Oki-Doki or Papelbot.
We could really use another run or 2...or 4
Back to the Bat-Den, Robin!

Rob said...

Did the Bruins win a game?

Yep. :D

allan said...

just about finished that job in the last 2 innings, so i should be able to concentrate on the final innings.

Allen said...

David Aardsma attends the Lester/Matsuzaka institute of first-pitch strikes.

Benjamin said...

Hey A-Rod hit it out of the infield.

allan said...

timlin is up ... gulp

allan said...

I bet Tito wants White Flag in the 8th and MDC in the 9th.

MDC did not pitch Friday and threw 4 pitches last night.

Amy said...

Can we get through a whole inning without walking a player?

Benjamin said...

Fuck yeah.

Amy said...

Three up, three down! WOW!

allan said...

yup - first mfy inning with 0 walks.

6 outs to go!

Patrick said...

OMG! Aardsma, I love you.

s1c said...

First 1-2-3 inning? OMG!!!

allan said...

Have the Red Sox adopted the MFY's annoying playing of GBeffingA at every 7th inning?

Patrick said...

I'm looking for a big sweaty Tek Dong this inning. Always enjoy spotting one of those.

tim said...

Just checking in, I'm doin some work so can't thread. I'm not that good of a multitasker yet...it's only April.

Obligatory hockey comment:
Holy shit to the Bs. This series totally could be 2-1 the other way and I really think they have a legit shot to "slay the dragon"...if they play as well as they have been. Man, exciting!

/OHC

Classic yankee-sox game here, 3 hrs into it. I missed some of the action during dinner but I think I should go take a couple shots of the strongest stuff in the cupboard in preparation for the 8th and 9th, due to Paps and Jeemer being unavailable...

Amy said...

I did not hear GBA on Friday night. I heard Sweet Caroline in the 8th. They played Take Me out to the Ballgame at the 7th inning stretch. I sang along happily to both.

Amy said...

3 up, 3 down. Boo.

Allen said...

RS: With Oki and Bot unavailable, would you do some other combination than Timlin and MDC?

allan said...

I don't think so.

allan said...

Damn what up with Tek?

7 pitch K
1st pitch F7
1st pitch GIDP
1st pitch P9

Benjamin said...

"Is that John Adams? That's John Adams, second President of the United States. No, wait, we're being told it's Sam Adams."

Classic.

Allen said...

I didn't think you did, really, just didn't know if you'd written it out there as "Tito wants..." because you had a different approach in mind.

allan said...

7-8-9 for Toastlin.

tim said...

white flag in.

*gulp*

Goin to get me a Moosehead.

Amy said...

Uhoh, Timlin v Giambi. Been there before.

allan said...

No, that seems best. Who else is out there? Lips, Lopez ...

s1c said...

Flag in? Looks like Redsock nailed it!!!

allan said...

joe says lopez up.

justin case, i guess.

allan said...

farnsworth up for the losers

Amy said...

Like I said....

Benjamin said...

Joe Morgan and Jon Miller.

Fuck Timlin.

tim said...

How
Giambi
Hits.

Fucking Timlin. Needs to be taken care of Old Yeller style.

allan said...

MOTHERVCUCKLER

Rob said...

This home run by Jason Giambi is brought to you by Nantucket Nectars. We're Juice Guys.

allan said...

how about they tell timlin the plane to clev takes off at 3 AM -- when it really leaves at 2?

Amy said...

Time for Timlin to become a pitching coach. Why is he in there?

tim said...

Fuck sakes. I'm tellin' ya, it's the only option

tim said...

Milk dud in...DP from toast pls.

Rob said...

Another weird decision by Girardi. Pinch-running for the catcher. So Posada will have to catch, and they'll have no DH.

Maybe he misses managing in the NL.

Benjamin said...

WTF is this man pitching.

allan said...

mike - get 1 out here okay. 2 is too much to dream for.

then get loogy lopez in there.

tim said...

GET THAT FUCKING ASSHOLE OUT OF THERE TITO! FOR FUCK SAKES WHAT ARE YOU A STUPID FUCKING IDIOT - HES GOING TO BLOW THIS GAME

tim said...

Thanks for listening, Tito.

allan said...

I hate Mike Timlin.

Amy said...

We need a triple play or a different pitcher.

Here comes Lopez.

Somehow I doubt we'll see Timlin soon again if at all.

allan said...

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Patrick said...

DOUBLE PLAY, DO IT NOW!

tim said...

We need a triple play or a different pitcher.

Both works for me.

Amy said...

Do we put Timlin back on the DL? Release him? Hang in there? He hasn't gotten anyone out in two outings and has given up two home runs.

allan said...

good control from timlin: 11 pitches, 8 strikes. ... there's a positive he can take into his new outing.

... for the portland sea dogs

SoSock said...

Way to go Timlin :(

tim said...

That last ESPN graphic...Last MFY comeback by 6+ runs was in 1987?

Wasn't it on September fucking 14th, 2007?

tim said...

FUCK YEAH!!!!!

Benjamin said...

DP DP.

Rob said...

FY WITH THE BRAINS!!!

Amy said...

OK, I will take the DP from DP!

allan said...

damon 0-for-0
3 walks and a sac fly

Jack Marshall said...

Someone explain to me why THE GREATEST MANAGER IN SOX HISTORY didn't simply install Sexy Lips as the pitcher in the 6th and let him finish the game. What's Taveras around for? Why run through a series of gambles; Ardsma's control, Timlin's career death throes, and Lopez's inability to get out lefties? WHY?

s1c said...

Lopez!!! Beautiful!!!

Patrick said...

Oh, thank god they put Lopez in. Might as well put that 0 on the board now. It's over.

Jack Marshall said...

Amy: see comment by me on another thread: guaranteed, Tito lets him blow at least 5 games.

tim said...

MDC going to attempt and save this one...

Patrick said...

Jack Marshall, do you really think Taverez could have finished the game, let along an inning?

SoSock said...

Pedroia - retribution
I think I love him almost as much as I hate Timlin

allan said...

i agree with jack -- but it'll only be 3 games blown.

cuz i'm an optimist -- :>/

Rob said...

Tek, to the umpire: "New ball?"
Ump: "Ow. Fuck that hurt!"
Tek: 'kay. I'll get it myself, then."
