G14: Red Sox 6, Spiders 4

Red Sox - 100 000 113 - 6 12 0
Spiders - 000 220 000 - 4 7 1
You puny Cleveland mortals ... did last October teach you nothing? Do you not realize that you are powerless to stop the mighty Red Sox Baseball Machine?

The Sox scored a run in the first, and saw 32 Westbrook pitches. Coupled with Phil Hughes's performance last night, the Bostons have seen 71 pitches in their last two first innings.

Lester was sharp through three innings, but stumbled in the fourth (allowing four of the first five batters to reach) and fifth (five of the first six Cleveland hitters reached base). Julian Tavarez came in and struck out two Spiders to end the fifth, then pitched well through the next two innings. And then Timlin threw a perfect eighth! OMG!!1!!!

In the meantime, the Red Sox chipped away at Cleveland's 4-1 lead. Sean Casey started the seventh with a walk and was forced by Julio Lugo. Singles from Coco Crisp and Dustin Pedroia brought Lugo home and ended Westbrook's night. Rafael Betancourt struck out both David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez to end that threat.

However, Kevin Youklis opened the eighth with a solo home run to left -- and the Spiders' lead was cut to 4-3. In the ninth, facing "closer" Joe Borowski, Lugo doubled down the left field line, was bunted to third by Crisp and scored on a fly ball to left by Pedroia. Tie game 4-4. Ortiz singled to left (he finished the night 2-for-5) and Manny followed with a first-pitch home run to deep left. Youkilis doubled, but Drew struck out to end the inning.

Jonathan Papelbon made quick work of Grady Sizemore (bsc: K), Asdrubal Cabrera (bcbs: K) and Travis Hafner (b: F8) and the win was secured.

Baltimore beat Toronto 4-3, so Boston moved into second place, .5 GB the Birds. The Yankees nearly blew a 7-2 lead to Tampa, winning 8-7 to move out of the AL East basement into fourth place.

***

Jon Lester (4.50, 96 ERA+) / Jake Westbrook (2.76, 152 ERA+)

Ortiz:
I know exactly what I'm doing wrong. Everything is right here [pointing to his head]. ... I have to stop thinking too much and fighting myself. I've been there before. I've been messed up before. Big time. Big time. I know I'll be out of it at some point. It happens to all of us. I'll be all right. This game is very mental. Your mind takes over. I know in my situation, my mind works more than anything else. Once you get physically prepared your mind takes over and sometimes you're fighting, fighting, fighting [yourself]. ... The manager can see things. Terry knows what to do. I always do everything Terry tells me to do.
Jeff Horrigan has some cool tidbits, including the fact that Ortiz:
went a career-worst 0-for-27 from Sept. 26, 1998 to April 4, 2000, with Minnesota, including all 10 of his big league at-bats in 1999.

The Sox stole four bases in a game for the first time since July 19, 2003, vs. Toronto. It was the first time they had stolen four vs. New York since May 3, 1995, at Yankee Stadium. ...

Jacoby Ellsbury's first-inning steal made him 11-for-11 in the majors. He is the first Sox rookie to begin his career with 11 consecutive successful steals since Lee Tinsley swiped 15 straight from the start of the 1994 season through April 28, 1995.
Bad Man Watch: Since the start of the 2006 season, Manny Ramirez is hitting .550 with eight home runs and 24 RBI in 18 games against the Yankees at Fenway.

timlin in -- does HGH play for clev too?

Amy said...

Oh, yeah, Nick was a Fenway virgin! Cold or not, a first time at Fenway when the Sox beat the Yankees has got to be a thrill.

Every time I go to Fenway, I am still amazed by how beautiful it is. Even on a rainy April night.

tim said...

Oh good, Borowski warming....Closer with an ERA over 5 last year Borowski.

redsock said...

timlin's opponents average: 1.000

5-for-5 with a sac.

Patrick said...

Just missed opening the new thread with a dong.

tim said...

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
page trois

ish said...

But he is a candidate for suspicion.

I've thought about it too. It was strange how he looked so strong and so toned, yet he rarely hit dongs. And now he is.

But then I try to push the thoughts from my mind. Reminds me a little of Rick Ankiel last year.

No worries for the Red Sox, though. Joe Borowski is loosening.

Amy said...

Uch, Timlin. Jack was right. He is back out there.

tim said...

Yeah, I thought the same thing about Kapler.

tim said...

Timlin records an out! Holy shit!

ish said...

Heh. Fenway Virgin.

I've never been to a game there yet, but I went on a tour last summer. Does that mean I only made it to like, second base?

Amy said...

TIMLIN GOT SOMEONE OUT!

L-girl said...

So glad Nick had a good time and saw a win.

Fenway has always been my favourite park, including in "my past life".

The first time I went there (with Allan, 1987), I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. I had seen it on TV so many times, but I still couldn't get over it.

Zenslinger said...

Always nice to halve your ERA with a popout.

redsock said...

yeah- that out will earn timlin another 5 appearances in tito's mind.

L-girl said...

LOL halve.

Wait, that's not a joke.

Amy said...

I read some interview with Kapler in which he insisted his muscles had nothing to do with steroid use. I believe him more than I believe Fat Billy. But I have my doubts as well.

Two outs for Timlin.

Patrick said...

yeah- that out will earn timlin another 5 appearances in tito's mind.

I was thinking that too. I almost wish he didn't do that.

tim said...

WOW TIMLIN

L-girl said...

Men his size don't get muscles like that without artificial help. Or so I have been told.

Again, it's not like I care either way.

TIMLIN RECORDS THREE OUTS!!!

NO, it's true! I just saw it!

Amy said...

Harvey prefers Fenway to Yankee Stadium for seeing a game also. At least it's one baseball thing we agree on.

TIMLIN GOT THEM OUT 1-2-3. I am elated!

redsock said...

TIMLIN IS BACK --- yeaaaah -- set up guy!@!!!!!!!!!!!

ish said...

It helps that Kapler's not an asshole like Billy is.

It's too bad it's come to this, yeah?

Zenslinger said...

Timlin roars back!

tim said...

wtf allan? hes clearly closer material. lets run him out there for another inning!

L-girl said...

Wow, very cool, re Harvey & Fenway. I didn't know other Yankees fans who felt that way.

redsock said...

The first time I went there (with Allan, 1987), I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. I had seen it on TV so many times, but I still couldn't get over it.

I felt the same way in 1976.

It is a very common feeling! That RED! That GREEN!

Patrick said...

RALLY CAPS ON PEOPLE. IT'S ON!

ish said...

Time for the thrill-a-minute closer.

L-girl said...

Here we go... Let's light up Mr. 13.50 ERA.

Amy said...

I am happy for Timlin. Really. Now we just need to get Papi hot. And teach Tek not to swing at first pitches.

nick said...

well...not a complete virgin. Took my daughter to a game there last summer, but before that it'd been since high school. This was maybe my 6th or 7th game at Fenway since my birth.

Never saw the Yankees before, though or a rivalry of that intensity. Fenway is clearly fantastic. Went to a game at Wrigley which was pretty awesome, but no other park I've been to really compares otherwise.

Patrick said...

I think Kapler could be that big without roids. He would just have to eat ALL THE TIME. 5 meals a day type thing. It's possible.

L-girl said...

SLUUGO!!!!!

Jere said...

Okay, I'm really back now. Yeah Lugo!!

nick said...

Dude. Sluuuugo!

tim said...

Laundry Foldin'. Be back soon, yallz.

L-girl said...

Oh yeah, it was not Nick's 1st time at Fenway, it was his first Red Sox-Yankees game. Very cool.

Fenway > Wrigley

by a lot

Jere said...

bunt him over, Coco

ish said...

When I went last summer it was before a night game against Toronto. Saw Roy Halladay throwing a side session in the bullpen, then got out in time to hang around and see some players arrive. Pedroia in his Hummer H3... the Stud, even 'Flo. Then, as we were walking back, Manny rolled slowly up the street. Not many people realized it yet, so I casually took my camera out and took a picture from about 15 feet away.

redsock said...

OH SHIT -- BUT LUGO HUSTLE = doubvle!!!

Amy said...

My brother's good friend who is otherwise a completely obnoxious Yankee fan and Red Sox hater admits that Fenway is HER favorite place to watch a game. I was amazed that she admitted that to me because mostly she asks Harvey how he can stay married to a Red Sox fan. :)

L-girl said...

Tim, it's the 9th inning, the laundry can wait!

(Or does folding laundry = steaming spinach?)

Jere said...

Scrotum Fly ties it now, come on!

Jere said...

effin Borowski, hahaha. remember that save he blew against the Yanks?

Zenslinger said...

Ha haaaah!

Does Manny need to learn not to swing at the first pitch?

Amy said...

Happy Sox fans in Cleveland. Happy Sox fan in Longmeadow MA.

ish said...

...shades of October.

:D

redsock said...

let me say that again

YOU HAVE GOT TO LUUUUUUUUUV JOE BOROWSKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA

Zenslinger said...

One more run and Borowski's ERA will be above Timlin's.

L-girl said...

God I love him!!!

Right before Manny unloaded that, I was about to say...

Ish, that pic is great. Manny's looking right at your camera.

Jere said...

I love the road comeback.

Amy said...

So a student comes to talk to me today and asks me about the "Jacoby" case (the case name is actually Jacobs v Kent). I laugh and say, "So I guess you are a Red Sox fan??" He was a bit embarrassed, until we started talking baseball. Then all was cool!

ish said...

effin Borowski, hahaha. remember that save he blew against the Yanks?

I have the inning on tape where he saved the division series clinching game against the MFY, where Suzyn Waldman cries on the radio and John Sterling tries to console her by saying all good things must come to an end. Or something.

ish said...

I want to know who the guy riding with Manny was. Could it have been one of the Japanese interpreters?

Amy said...

Where is Ish's picture? Did he post a link?

L-girl said...

my, that is so funny. It's great you were able to defuse his embarrassment because of your fan-ness.

redsock said...

and Game 8 goes to Boston ...

like Games 5 6 7

Andy said...

Just so you all know I just gave birth to Manny's love child.

L-girl said...

There's a link to Ish's pic, scroll up.

Patrick said...

MVP = MBM

L-girl said...

You can have a double wedding when Allan marries Ortiz. He's been proposing for several years now.

redsock said...

borowski gave up 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 doubles, 1 home run --- all on only 13 pitches.

... dude!

ish said...

I'm baffled as to why Borowski is still the closer. Why wouldn't they have Perez the set-up man and Betancourt the closer? Betancourt was fantastic tonight, minus the sweaty dong. But now it's all for naught.

It just doesn't make sense to me. Imagine if this happened in Boston.

Jere said...

Oh yeah, I forgot Borowski did get that key save against them in the ALDS. That was sweet when they closed them out.

But that horrific appearance--it actually made his Wikipedia page:

"His struggles were capped off after surrendering six runs to the New York Yankees on April 19, 2007 in the ninth inning after coming into the game with a 4-run lead"

L-girl said...

I forgot about sweaty dong.

Creepy, that.

Amy said...

My students all know I am an over the top Sox fan, so his embarrassment was short-lived. Who knows? Maybe he did it subconsciously to get on my good side. (Or, if I were cynical, I would say it was intentional, but this kid isn't that type.)

ish said...

Amy: picture of Manny

L-girl said...

I mean the expression sweaty dong. Not the ball that flew out of the park off the sweaty boy's bat.

Amy said...

Pap in. No rain delays to worry about tonight.

ish said...

You can have a double wedding when Allan marries Ortiz. He's been proposing for several years now.

You mean Pedro turned him down?

tim said...

I'd casually like to point out at this point that after the bottom of the 8th I told Allan sarcastically that we should run timlin out for another inning - implying that we WOULD be playing bottom 9. And we are :-)

Time for some snuffage!

Man, I gotta fold laundry more often!

(I was clearly watching and folding, can't gamethread/fold/watch all at the same time yet tho!)

Patrick said...

Cue shipping up to boston.
Cue dirty water.
Cue bedtime

ish said...

Bot has never given up a run in April.

redsock said...

He's been proposing for several years now.

That bitch Tiffany won't give him a divorce.

tim said...

borowski gave up 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 doubles, 1 home run --- all on only 13 pitches.

... dude!

That's efficient.

Zenslinger said...

Manny projects at, what, 155 RBI at the moment?

'Course if you want to claim that you'd have to admit that Papi projects to less than 40!

L-girl said...

When the Yankees won the WS in 1996, people I worked with 3 years earlier were leaving me voice mails congratulating me. I didn't even realize people ID'd me that way.

ish said...

Siddown, Grady.

tim said...

Have a seat, Grady.

redsock said...

sizemore - 97 heat inside - K

Amy said...

Nice photo, Ish! Thanks for reposting. Trying to scroll up while also trying to watch Bot wasn't going to happen.

L-girl said...

Tim, I used to watch and iron at the same time. But yeah, you can thread too.

L-girl said...

From now on Hafner is Heifer.

I could probably pull off an iron/thread/watch...Folding is more intense, I'm an intense folder.

FucKin eh!

Man, Remy is totally ripping on Borowski, it's great!

Zenslinger said...

Christ, it's like you just know they're going to strike out.

Amy said...

Two away, two Ks. What a guy.

L-girl said...

But ironing is dangerous!

Ironing and cooking. Tim, you are just one great catch!

nick said...

awesome. Plus, I scored the TV for the full 9th inning. excellent.

tim said...

If it was only 2 degrees warmer!

Good work boys!

And re: Rogers sports pack - I'm still in Hamilton till the end of the month, moving back to Waterloo in May. I think I'm just gonna do MLB.TV - do you need a box to get the channels? or can you just hook the cable up to your TV and flip to it?

L-girl said...

Jere, that's cool - but strange!

L-girl said...

Jere, that's cool - but strange!

ish said...

Kind of like how the Red Sox stole the last three games played against Cleveland? With the Red Sox scoring double-digit runs? I wonder what a decisive victory would be...

SoSock said...

Manny & Papelbot
Gotta love this team.
Now tho, I gotta love the thought of food and a shower.
Tomorrow!

L-girl said...

Amy, I just said the same thing to Allan about Tim :)

Tim, you need the box. It's on the digital-only channels, so you have to have the highest level of cable to get it. MLB TV might be the way to go.

Jere said...

The Rays came back and tied and lost by one??? shit...

phrenile said...

Timlin got the win and lowered his ERA to 20.25. Maybe his second-half heroics begin in the second half of April this year.

L-girl said...

Comments may sit for a while now. Hasta tomorrow!

nick said...

MVP: Ol'81 for not F'in it all up.

tim said...

But ironing is dangerous!

Ironing isn't dangerous. Not paying attention while ironing is. Clearly I would be distracted as hell ironing/watching/threading, so yeah I see your point...

and LOL, thanks amy! i just do what i gotta do...

Amy said...

Wow, he lowered his ERA by 60 points in one outing. Got to love those stats!

OK, off to bed. Well, to read the paper which has been waiting for hours for some attention.

Til tomorrow.

Zenslinger said...

Runner-up MVP of that game = Julian. Stopped the bleeding, then gave two more scoreless. Need him to be able to do that at least some of the time.

Jere said...

"Ironing isn't dangerous."

But it is delicious.

Amy said...

Nice article about Tek in the Times today. No comment for JOS? Still pissed off about his GIDP last night?

Zenslinger said...

I read it. It was cool.

Liz said...

I know it was a zillion comments ago, but thanks for answering my question guys! (What classy fans we are, huh? With the LMB. Hehe)
