G16: Yankees 15, Red Sox 9

Red Sox - 110 160 000 - 9 14 1
Yankees - 300 440 04x - 15 16 0
(created by SoSHer mt8thsw9th)

***

Clay Buchholz (3.27, 136 ERA+) / NYY: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (1.23, 341 ERA+)

A rematch of last Friday's game. Wang threw a complete-game two-hitter (New York lost the other two games in the three-game series) and Buchholz allowed only one run and four hits in six innings.
That's the best start that I've had this year. It's just something to build off of. I didn't do anything great. I think I did the little things good enough to get by and keep the team in the game to win. ... They've seen me once and I've seen them, so I think each of us have maybe a little bit of an edge on one another.
Manny Ramirez is 13-for-25 against Wang. ... Nine of Kevin Youkilis's 20 hits this season have been for extra bases, giving him a .635 slugging percentage and a team-high 186 OPS+. Plus, he's been kind enough to allow a family of sparrows to live in his goatee until daddy bird can find a new job.

For those of you outside New England who may be trapped with the MFY announcers tonight, there is an alternative: Jere! Check out his blog for info on hearing his broadcast.

Of course, that line is false---just as false as the line that life is a box of chocolates.

I have cried plenty because of baseball.

Manny's not used to running with the pitch.

Did Manny really think Jeter was trying to get him to step off base and get tagged out on that foul?

Patrick said...

I loved that shot from Manny to Jeter and back to Manny.
Talk about contrast!

Can the Sox win 3 games in the 9th on the road in a row?

hmmm, magic 8 ball says "Better not tell you now".

Rob said...

I wonder if the Flag can finally retire the Juice Guy.

nick said...

I hope Youk's ok. What was the injury time out earlier in the game? Yankees were in the field.

(my boobs were just like weehee!!)

ok we scored like 304985734 runs in the first 5 and we can't get TWO to tie it?? TWO.

(2 dollarssss)

Rob said...

Youk fouled one off his foot hard.

Then did it again a couple of pitches later.

heh. That pitch ducked in, Jeter did his little wussy dance.

Patrick said...

hmmm, magic 8 ball says "Better not tell you now".

I asked and got a very solid 'definitely'

hgh would be up 6th -- timlin better not get that far

Rob said...

hgh would be up 6th -- timlin better not get that far

That would be the hope.

Walks don't help.

nick said...

Youk is such a freakin' ball magnet. defensively and offensively. at bat he's hit seemingly endlessly and fouls off himself with regularity. Then on the field...well y'know.

Amy said...

Leadoff walk. Seen this before. At least Giambi isn't up now.

Ish- was being positive, he's expecting the MFY's to have to bat again.

Amy said...

Splash---yeah, he was cute in that one. And Big.

So there, Erin Andrews worshippers.

Rob said...

Ish- was being positive, he's expecting the MFY's to have to bat again.

Naturally.

Hopefully not against Timlin. Perhaps of the likes of Jeemer, or the Bot.

Benjamin said...

Did Abreu just get teabagged?

Rob said...

Super slow mo of a ball bouncing up and hitting Abreu in the face.

Priceless.

Benjamin said...

Worse yet, he struck out swinging on the next pitch, against Timlin.

Patrick said...

Our bullpen is sobering.

s1c said...

WEEI has a competition this year, every wed. they ask tito a second guess question. This weeks was "why have timlin pitch to HGH on friday"?

allan said...

Our bullpen is sobering.

And it's making me an alcoholic.

SoSock said...

TDCG - what was that ski/snowboard movie with the "2 dollarss" line?
My kids used to say that all the time.
Whew! Caught a break!

s1c said...

Crap!

Rob said...

Meh.

No need for Fruitbat now.

Better off dead with John Cusak "I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS!"

Amy said...

Remy says this is a big situation for Timlin.

And he blew it.

Time to turn in my ticket. Don't see us scoring 4 in the 9th. Hate to give up, but ...

thatdietcokegirl said...

sosock - better off dead;)

amy - omg big. love that too. one of the best movies everr:))

Okajima, Pappelbon and nervous breakdowns.

Turner and Hooch, ftw.

Rob said...

Bloody hell.

nixon33 said...

ok now its over
fuck it.
get em tomorrow

Patrick said...

I have about a dozen 'if only' regrets about this game. Most of which have to do with bad ump calls.

Amy said...

Hey, he didn't get a HR. Timlin is actually doing better.

Is Francona just letting him stay out there indefinitely since we already lost the game?

SoSock said...

Amy
Tito turned in his ticket when he brought in Tin man.
Loyalty is one thing, but he is COSTING us, big time.

Patrick said...

and yes, they let Timlin face GIambi yet again.

allan said...

like gagne last year, tito is letting timlin show what he's got.

nothing.

fucking neo-con shitstick better retire by sunrise.

heng brothers said...

DFA Timlin. Please, for love of all that's holy?

Amy said...

So this is Timlin's third disastrous outing with one good one. How many more does he get?

allan said...

maybe all these pitches will blow out his elbow.

we can only hope.

nick said...

timlin's a neo-con to boot? Didn't know my opinion could go lower.

nixon33 said...

all those runs for nothing

tim said...

bin watchin' since the 6th (fucking work burning me out)...but not commenting (MLB.TV and i want to watch fullscreen)

clearly fullscreen isnt worthwhile anymore. im still holding out for the 6 (so far) run comeback...fucking white flag. fuck.

Patrick said...

a dozen, im guessing, amy.

Who can replace Timlin? We must have a ton of candidates in Pawtucket.

Amy said...

Oh, please don't remind me of Gagne. That one caused me serious indigestion last season.

Rob said...

But these things are more likely to happen when your starting pitcher goes 3 2/3.

Seems like we're in the middle of a shift in pitching strategies and ways to win in baseball. We went from pitchers throwing complete games, to guys coming in and closing a game out, to the need for good set up men. Now the importance rests upon middle relief. Not just to give innings, but to keep you ahead, or tied.

Patrick said...

Why is that Ish? What is changing?

allan said...

So this is Timlin's third disastrous outing with one good one. How many more does he get?

2?

Amy said...

I don't know which feels worse---coming from behind and then losing the lead anyway or being blown out from the beginning?

Rob said...

Why is that Ish? What is changing?

I think the starting pitchers are pitching less innings now than even a few years ago. Maybe it's just because it's the beginning of the season, but it seems like 7 innings is too much to expect now.

allan said...

pitching strategy is always changing. from 1860 to now.

you always want good pitchers

nixon33 said...

i have to disagree with ish.
nothing is changing, its just that the starting pitching as of late struggles to go deep. the strategy is still to have the starter go deep. its no the strategy to bring in middle relief.

Amy said...

Pitching problems generally do seem worse when the weather is cold. But I don't remember last season having any problems with our starters like we are now.

allan said...

why does joe morgan keep calling 2006 "two oh six"?

L says a lot of people are saying it.

tim said...

So this is Timlin's third disastrous outing with one good one. How many more does he get?

He gets 5 for every good one, and 5 to start.

so...using good ol equation of a line...

y = mx + b

where
y = total appearances
m = 5 (# of appearances per quality start)
x = number of good appearances
b = 5 (default start #)

wow im a nerd

s1c said...

Am so glad that after tomorrow night we won't see the MFY's until July.

These long games are killers.

MFY's getting all their runs tonight, captain kick ass shuts them out tomorrow.

allan said...

# of starter innings has been a pretty steady line for a century or more.

nixon33 said...

come on lugo! hit into a double play!

Patrick said...

I have my own theories about human nutrition and physical degeneration. I think poor nutrition has to do with depleting vitality, but I have little evidence to back it.

Amy said...

Love the algebra formula, Tim. Your diverse skills continue to amaze me.

Benjamin said...

Remember when the MFYs scored four runs and we immediately came back and scored five? We need six. :/

tim said...

s1c said...

wow im a nerd

But we count on you for the spinach man!!!

Rob said...

i have to disagree with ish.
nothing is changing, its just that the starting pitching as of late struggles to go deep. the strategy is still to have the starter go deep. its no the strategy to bring in middle relief.

Perhaps it's because hitters are being more patient. We see that routinely with the Red Sox and Yankees, but it'd be interesting to see if other teams have become more patient.

It'd be interesting to compile some numbers, like amount of pitches per outing, how many innings, how many pitches per hitter, etc. Throughout MLB.

It could be because of the cold, also. Ebbs and flows, I guess.

Amy said...

Yeah, yeah, tease us. We are six runs down.

heng brothers said...

I love the equation, but I hate what it means... at least seven more bad outings from Timlin before he hits the trash heap.

Patrick said...

# of starter innings has been a pretty steady line for a century or more.

that's what I wanted to hear.

SoSock said...

The early part of the sason does mean something.
I for one adjust my pitch count limits for my LL'rs all season, starting very conservative and stretching it out a the season goes.

Rob said...

X-Rays are negative for Youk's big toe.

Benjamin said...

Well, we did score six that one time. Like that, please.

SoSock said...

How many pop-ups can you have in 1 game?

Amy said...

Patrick, was that some random thought, or related to the starting pitchers?

allan said...

good god

SHUT UP JOEMORGAN\

SHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP

Patrick said...

twas related to pitchers.

nixon33 said...

win tomorrow.

allan said...

morgan just saying jibberish -- like a random baseball word generator.

seriously, he took a big step into senility tonight

Rob said...

Let me pose this question to the peanut gallery...

Who would tonight's MVP be?

nixon33 said...

)(*&)$*&#_$#$*)(*$_@)$+@)_#$(@_$)(*#&#_()__

Amy said...

Pitchers aren't being fed well?

Allan, am I wrong in saying that last season our starters lasted more innings per game in April than we have this season?

allan said...

Who would tonight's MVP be?

Posada or Timlin

nixon33 said...

ish, thier backup catcher, two clutch hits

Benjamin said...

So much for that. At least Papi didn't have to make the last out.

Patrick said...

Hawkins for MVP

s1c said...

Thank gawd, this thing is over.

Amy said...

Tonight's MVP: Hawkins.

Rob said...

Hawkins would be my MVP.

nixon33 said...

goodnight

allan said...

Allan, am I wrong in saying that last season our starters lasted more innings per game in April than we have this season?

Probably not.

But let's remember this is a bitch of a schedule this month. We should be expecting struggles.

Amy said...

OK, I will be hoping for better results against the weaker teams.

And tomorrow night as well.

Good night, all.

Rob said...

Bruney gets the save.

SoSock said...

OK, we've split so far this season.
Let's go back ahead tomorrow.
