G3: Red Sox 2, Athletics 1

Red Sox - 000 011 000 - 2 9 0
Athletics - 010 000 000 - 1 3 1
Superb outing from Dice (6.2-2-1-0-9, 96) -- and Youkilis goes 3-for-4 and scores both runs.

Matsuzaka's first five batters were a little iffy. He pitched a perfect first, with two strikeouts, but needed 17 pitches. Then he gave up a first-pitch home run to Cust to start the second and fell behind Brown 3-0.

But he got Brown on a grounder to short -- after the Cust dong, he allowed only one of the next 17 A's to reach base (Suzuki singled to open the third and was caught stealing). Matsuzaka struck out seven of his last 11 batters. Of the 21 hitters he faced, only four hit the ball out of the infield.

Yook began the fifth with a single to center. Two outs later, he went to second on Lugo's single off the Blanton's foot and slid in ahead of the tag on Ellsbury's single to right. With two outs in the sixth, Yook tripled and scored on Varitek's double -- which hit above the yellow line in right center (a home run, but the umps blew the call).

Okajima relieved Dice with two outs in the seventh. He walked Cust but got Brown to pop to Pedroia to end the inning. He allowed a single to start the eighth, but got a force play and a fly out before handing the ball to Papelbon.

Bot got an inning-ending force, then came back with some no-nonsense heat in the ninth, striking out the side.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (125 ERA+) / Joe Blanton (84 ERA+)

Let's begin again.

Tony Massarotti, Herald:
In Matsuzaka's final 13 starts of 2007 (including the postseason), he threw 1,331 pitches in 71 innings, an average of nearly 19 pitches an inning. His average outing was 5 innings, and he needed about 102 pitches to get through it.
Last Tuesday, Dice threw 96 pitches in five innings.

Check it out: Julio Lugo and Coco Crisp have the team's second- and third-best OPS+:
 AVG OBP SLG OPS+
Ramirez .333 .333 .889 209
Lugo .500 .571 .500 186
Crisp .333 .333 .667 156
What ... too early to get excited?

The Red Sox have a tough April schedule. After the two games in Oakland, they play three in Toronto before hosting the Tigers and Yankees, then travelling to Cleveland and New York. After April 22's game against the Angels, the Red Sox will have already played the three other playoff teams from last season. The Yankees also meet Cleveland and the Tigers this month, but they also have nine games against the White Sox, Royals and Orioles.

After yesterday's rainout, the Yankees play Toronto at 7 PM (Halladay/Wang). Pedro goes tonight (also at 7 PM) as the Mets host the Marlins.

Time to get a big enough lead so I can go to sleep. Sort of determined to watch the whole game since it will be my first chance all season. But I hate these west coast games.

Hey, Jere, you need some crowd noise. Especially when you do home games.

Great success! Alright sleep time, night all!!!!! Great show jere, i loved it. team of the shitter, lmao.

Dice-K great game, welcome back to the US red sox!

I am going to sleep!

allan said...

is there a number to call you, jere?

allan said...

tim said...

I'm there.

Ron said...

I'm still here.

Extra Jere brought to you by Remy's Junk

tim said...

Thanks RS, got Giants Dodgers on now.

Ron said...

Question: How do you guys feel about instant replay for boundary calls? Just part of the game? Seems like a simple thing, but not sure how I feel about it.

tim said...

this commentary feat Allan is on the dot!

andy said...

Dice impresses after 1 bad inning again. I am ok with that being a pattern. you can't knock 6-9 K's a game.
Let's hope our offense steps it up finally. Lester better not suck. And how long exactly will it take for announcers to stop bringing up the cancer? How about Oki looking down as he pitches, do we need slow motion every outing to see it? and stop trying to jinx youk into making an error.

tim said...

Well thats why I'm reluctant to sign up for EI...30$ per month, I want NESN every night!

tim said...

although ive gotta say, the texas announcers commentary when Sexy Lips rolled the ball to first was priceless.

Ron said...

Production values on NESN are a lot better than most other feeds too.
__

Remy definitely roots for the Sox, but it's not nearly as blatant.

Joe Grav said...

This was a very satisfying win. :)

That was also one of Pap's most dominant saves. Really nice.

Good night, y'all.

tim said...

I'm glad Jere also calls him PUTZ, not "pootz" like he's supposed to be called!

Ron said...

Just lost the audio feed - was weird though, felt like I as in the NSA or something.

Night!

allan said...

hey - did jere hang up on me?

tim said...

jere youcastr died out.

just put on the Tex-Sea game tho....sounds intense! "Puts" is how announcers are calling him.

allan said...

talking with jere - looks like show is done for tonight.

tim said...

OK, I'm out. Have a good one, Allan and Jere! Gonna watch the rest of this TEX-SEA game then get a few hours of sleep. Interesting story about me trying to get 8 hours of sleep which I will bring to you tomorrow! Heh...night guys.

Jere said...

Of course, on the night I again try to tell Amy that getting tix IS possible, the Sox put up all kinds of tix. I just coulda had EIGHT tix together for home game 2 or 3. Was trying to figure out what to do (since I already am going to two games in that series), and then the clock struck two, and suddenly they were saying the ticket office is "unavailable." So, Amy, or anyone else, I suggest trying them in the morning. They're always releasing tix...

Zenslinger said...

Was indeed a fun game.

I made a sign that said "IMPEACH REMY NESN /= QVC". The most attention it got was from the people around me -- it was just a 81/2x11 piece of paper.

About 65/35 Oakland/Boston fans. Maybe 60/40.

We had fun and it was nice it didn't go too too late.

Amy, my avatar is Peter Gabriel in the Genesis days with the batwings he would wear on the opening number in 1972-3 ("Watcher of the Skies").

Sleeping tight, I trust!

W! And great to see Daisuke dice them up.

SoSock said...

Morning
Watched a little on GDGD last night and followed comments for about an inning and crashed. Maybe I'm getting too old for this coaching teenagers stuff.
Glad to get the win.
And Zen is showing his age too - Genesis in the Gabriel days? I had no idea anyone else could be that old. Remember Lamb Lies Down On Broadway? Drugs were mandatory to get through that one, I think they actually came packaged in the album.

Amy said...

Zen, thanks for the explanation. As SoSock said, you seem to be dating yourself a bit with a Peter Gabriel reference. :)

Jere, thanks again for the tip. I went to redsox.com and checked for tickets, but most of the games were weekdays, which don't work for me until my school year is over in late May. The weekend games I looked at said they were sold out, despite being listed on the website. There was one Sunday game that had tickets, just have to check with my husband about the date. Thanks again for the tip!

Zenslinger said...

Early Genesis is before my time. I like to think I was born right around the moment Peter began writing down lyrics to "Supper's Ready".

My teen years were more properly the heyday of REM and U2...and Peter's solo career.
