G7: Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 4

Red Sox - 001 010 110 - 4 10 4
Blue Jays - 000 241 00x - 7 5 0
And so the road trip ends.

Beckett was very sharp early on. Ellsbury bopped a solo homer in the second to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. Beckett walked Rios to start the fourth and Wells followed with a home run. But Varitek came back with a solo shot in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.

Beckett retired the first two Jays in the fifth, but gave up a little flair to left to Hill, who stole second. After Rios worked an eight-pitch walk, Beckett passed Wells on four straight. In came Delcarmen -- whose first pitch was clubbed to deep left center by Thomas for a grand slam.

Down by three in the 9th, the Sox rallied. Lowell reached on an infield single and with one out, Varitek lined a hit to right center. Ellsbury lined a 1-2 pitch just foul down the left field line before striking out. With two outs, it could have been redemption time for Lugo -- who committed three errors -- but he lofted a routine fly to center to complete the Toronto sweep.

Josh Beckett (145 ERA+, 2007) / Roy Halladay (103 ERA+)

Beckett returns. Yesterday, it was reported that "the back spasm that forced [Beckett] out of his March 8 spring training start in Fort Myers had its origins in the hip area."

Beckett:
After the first week, my back really responded to the treatment, and once we got rid of the back spasms, basically what we had to do was just strengthen my hip. That's kind of where the problem lied. I think the back spasms were just more of protecting my hip. ...

Once we got the hip to where I could throw every day, throw bullpens, then it was just getting into games and building up.
Halladay lost to the Yankees on April 1 in his first start, allowing seven hits and three runs in seven innings.

Joe Grav said...

Well, if we can get two here...

allan said...

halladay at 96, will gibbons pull him?

nick said...

Holy crap do I feel bad for Lugo. There's not a good out for him here. I suppose Tito can let him ride it out and act like he's doing what he did for (rookie) FY last year, but ugly ugly. And if he benches him for...anyone please... that hurts Lugo's brand something good.

allan said...

7-3, he should. but he probably won't.

Jere said...

Damon 3 for 22 this season

Patrick said...

YOOOUUUUK! Gimmie a donger here.

Patrick said...

Three bags will do, Youk. That'll do.

Jere said...

oh man, you don't wanna get nailed by Wells. And if the ump hadn't rooted for the great play we'd have something going here

andy said...

now there is a gem

allan said...

outside of the 3 dongs, we have had one guy at second ..........

WAIT -- now 2 as yook goes to 3rd!!!

Patrick said...

Take that, Vernon. Where's Vernon from? I've never met a Vernon here in New England.

s1c said...

That had to hurt, big collision.

Jere said...

9-1-2 for the Rays in the eighth. still just down 2.

Yeah, Papi. Again, too bad the ump rooted for the play instead of calling it fairly. We're gonna have to win going away so that won't matter.

Patrick said...

I hope that Pedroia no play doesn't haunt us.

allan said...

Wells born in Shreveport, LA.

FLO!

nick said...

wells is a brick house. and Ortiz actually gets a hit! Take that Damon.

Hoping for a Crawford Dong over in the Bronx.

rays go quickly against the scatmuncher in the eighth.

Patrick said...

The tiebreaker should have been how many DPs Manny would hit into.

Sorry, feeling a bit masochistic now.

allan said...

bot in

Patrick said...

Hoping Bot gets the win.

Joe Grav said...

I really thought the Sox would win this one. Well, it's too early to get too worried. It's been a grueling road trip

allan said...

I'd like to apologize on behalf of Canada for the Blue Jays acting so out of character this weekend.

Joe Grav said...

It's okay, Canada, we forgive you. Just make sure those damn Montreal Canadiens get locked in their homes before they are scheduled to take the ice against the Bruins.

andy said...

Ok Ellsbury holds the game in his little hands.

Joe Grav said...

You're a Torontonian, right sock? Go ask the average Leaf fan what they think of the Canadiens. We (Boston + Toronto) are in the same boat on that one. ;)

Patrick said...

3Ks.

Joe Grav said...

Well, hey, Drew's batting in this inning! Woo! (never thought I'd say THAT)

Jere said...

great inning for Pap.

Okay, 3-4-5 for the Devils in the 9th. You can do this! You're due!

allan said...

Dear Red Sox: It's Mother's Day in Toronto*!!! Time to stage a great game-winning rally.

(* Don't tell them it's not.)

Patrick said...

Where's Andy to orchestrate our comeback?

Joe Grav said...

Canadian Mouthers' Day! You silly Canadians and your incorrect holiday dates.

allan said...

Accordion in.

Joe Grav said...

Well, that was a lucky break. Lowell was going in slo-mo

Jere said...

yes! okay, one more runner. We can do this.

Patrick said...

Joe C. kind of spazzed that last play. Too much to say at one time.

Joe Grav said...

I love it when that happens

Jere said...

top 9s going simultaneously. each team needs baserunners.

Drew: go for the double, no dong needed yet

Jere said...

shit. Looks like I have to go to Fenway if I wanna see the game. And I will be, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, so I'll see you all on Thursday and Saturday! We can all watch blank screens together.

Oh, hey, the commercials work fine! Great!

allan said...

goddamn delay.

s1c said...

Fragging Jays.

The Pennant and rings will be awarded on tuesday as the last place Tigers take on the last place Red Sox. Gahhh

Lord Lynch said...

I guess that won't be remembered as Julio Lugo's finest game.

Patrick said...

Lugo should get the loss instead of Beckett.

nick said...

Oh man. The Lamentable Lugo.

3E and at the plate 2 out 2 on down by 3 in the 9th. Would a moment of magnificence redeem him? Sadly, we will never know (because of those bastards at NESN)....

Joe Grav said...

To be fair, that hardly ever happens, jere. the NESN folks tend to do a great job. The timing here was just very unfortunate.

Jere said...

It's been a lifelong quest for me to see this team on TV, Joe. No slack!

allan said...

Fuck the Blue Jays!
Fuck 'em all!
Fuckin' fuckers.

allan said...

Hey, that's almost a haiku. Let's see:

Shit! Fuck the Blue Jays!
Fuck 'em all, fuckin' fuckers.
Eat shit; enjoy third.

ESPN's website says that Beckett was "rocked." What game were they the hell watching? I saw a terrific pitcher whose stamina was down pitch great until he tired, and who with competent relief pitching would have left a tie game, giving up a lousy 3 hits!

This game shows the best and worst of Francona. Would I bring back a young pitcher to face the same guy who dinged him the day before in a tie game with the bases loaded? N-E-V-E-R. I think it is foolhardy.
Does it cement his relationship with the players over the long term? No doubt. Is it worth it?
Ask me in about 3 months. If DelCarmen's ego ends up bruised and he goes into a prolonged slump, I'll say that Francona blew it.

The fact is, the Sox should have won all three of these games, and were undermined by atypical defense and terrrible relief.

Maybe the game where [a certain commenter] said Dice-K got "annihilated" after losing 2-1 to one of the greatest pitching performances we'd ever seen.

Hard to figure.

They were probably asking those pink-hat chicks.
