G31: Red Sox 7, Rays 3

Rays - 000 010 200 - 3 7 0
Red Sox - 001 500 01x - 7 13 1
in the bottom of the fourth, with the Red Sox ahead 1-0, Mike Lowell struck out and Kevin Youkilis lined to shortstop. Two quick outs.

Then Brandon Moss homered to deep center field. Jason Varitek singled to center, Julio Lugo walked, Jacoby Ellsbury singled to left-center, scoring Varitek, then he stole second base, Dustin Pedroia singled to center and Lugo and Ellsbury scored, David Ortiz banged an RBI single through the shift, bringing Pedroia home -- and giving Boston a 6-0 lead.

With the run the Red Sox scored in the third inning -- on a one-out double from Lugo and a two-out double from Pedroia -- Boston had scored in consecutive innings for the first time since the second and third frames on Wednesday, April 23.

Buchholz (5.1-5-1-4-6, 96) had an eventful outing, but was able to work out of trouble. He walked the first two batters in the second, but got a strikeout, a fly out and an out at the plate (Moss to Tek) on a single. In the next inning, he allowed a single and a walk, then struck out the side. His only 1-2-3 inning was the fourth. Another leadoff walk, a double and a wild pitch brought in Tampa's first run.

Javier Lopez allowed a couple of runs in the seventh, but Manny Delcarmen got the final out (albeit after putting two runners on base). Hideki Okajima pitched a perfect eighth and Jonathan Papelbon threw a perfect ninth: 7 pitches, 7 strikes.

There was a 2:27 rain delay before the start of the game. ... Tampa was attempting to go five games over .500 for the first time in club history. ... Boston collected 13 hits and five walks -- but Manny Ramirez went 0-for-5, with three strikeouts.

***

Edwin Jackson (3.86, 110 ERA+) / Clay Buchholz (4.08, 109 ERA+)

Red Sox record when scoring:
4 runs or fewer: 4-11

5 runs or more: 13-2
Here's something I would not have believed five weeks ago:

"On May 2, Kevin Cash will have a higher OPS -- by almost 150 points -- than David Ortiz."
         OBP SLG OPS
Cash .395 .406 .801
Ortiz .301 .355 .656
Also: Julio Lugo is outslugging Mike Lowell .313 to .244.

Bold Crazy-Assed Predictions:

1. We will have at least 2 runs by the end of the 3rd inning.

Manny: You're a bad man. Make me look like a smart man!

Heh. Celtics lost, and there's a game 7 coming up in that series.

Not every year you have a team that is the underdog and makes it a game 7 (Bruins), and a team that is the favorite, and the underdog makes it a game 7 (Celtics.) So, you know how it feels both ways. From a Hawks/Bruins standpoint and from Celtics/Canadiens.

There's the run for TB---my 11-1 prediction looking good.

tim said...

And to respond to the jere/L responses earlier re: accounting and my wife :P - L basically got it bang-on...

Yeah, I'm doing a business degree with accounting...in a co-op program, so basically im in school for 4 months/work for 4 months. Was in school for sept-dec, then at work for January until today. And since april was tax season...i was buried until...basically today.

School starts up again monday, i've gotta go in to work in the afternoon though to tie up some loose ends...going for a US shopping trip tomorrow though.

And re: "wife" - Steph, my girlfriend - i don't kno

HAHAHAHAHAHAH TAKE THAT CRAWFORD

allan said...

fuck yeah

5-3-2 DP!!!!!!!

eff you rays!!

Sarah Haendler said...

Ah, Dr. Doubles at work...

tim said...

as i was saying - i don't know how to refer to her on JoS...most (all?) people probably wouldn't know if i said "Stephs coming along" and i just dont like the word "girlfriend"...seems highschoolish...i dont know.

i say wife sometimes just as a joke, considering all our friends say we act like an old married couple... and i'm not going to refer to her with one of those pseudo-quasi-shits like "significant other" or "life partner" or "teammate" or some stupid shit...

MLB.TV misses that pitch/hit.... fuck.

allan said...

i like "partner".

anyway, now we'll know who you mean!

tim said...

tim, do what I do, just use a friend's account and password.

I don't have any friends that like baseball/have MLB.TV, other than my internet friends (here!) hahaha...

But this year, Paypal has introduced this new feature where you can generate a single-use credit card number. So I just signed up for MLB.TV with one of them, so basically if they try to repeat charge me for it it will get declined.....I'm still debating the Extra Innings subscription though.

tim said...

"partner" i suppose isn't that bad...but being in business/accounting and all, "partner" just seems like its some sort of business transaction or something

allan said...

with 6 runs, the sox have exceeded my expectations, so i'm all in favour of matching jere's 11-1 call.

Sarah Haendler said...

I feel you on "girlfriend", Tim. I generally just refer to Dave as "Dave", and figure if people can't get it from context then they can ask and I will tell them. "Boyfriend" feels like someone you are dating but not someone with whom you have a long-term stable relationship.

tim said...

Rays get one more and my predictions golden. Including the wet part.

But I'd much prefer to see Jere's prediction come true =)

I originally was going to predict a rainout, glad I didn't go that route.

Ouch, backwards K.

allan said...

sarah with the 201 & the 301!

tim said...

"Boyfriend" feels like someone you are dating but not someone with whom you have a long-term stable relationship.

Dats riiiite!

For some reason the word "boyfriend" makes me think of some greased-up guy named Joey, wearing a wife-beater and blue jeans, sitting on one of those ranch-fence type things working on an old car...

I truly have lost my mind. This confirms it.

tim said...

I'd also like to clarify that by "greased-up" I mean like slicked back hair...Giambi'ish kind of.

Rob said...

"life partner"

I'd usually go with partner in crime.

laura k said...

and i'm not going to refer to her with one of those pseudo-quasi-shits like "significant other" or "life partner" or "teammate" or some stupid shit...

Excuse the fuck out of me, Tim, but what people choose to call each other is not quasi, it's not pseudo, and it sure as hell ain't "stupid shit".

Use the word you like, whatever, but why put down the other choices?

Allan and are partners. It ain't pseudo. It's what we like.

Lots of people are partners because they can't be anything else (by law), and lots of people are partners because it best describes their relationship. You know, equality?

Quasi pseudo stupid shit? Fuck you.

Sarah Haendler said...

Oh yeah, I def. don't want to be with "boyfriend" then, that guy sounds like a jerk.

One of these days I really should sort the terminology. I'm not a big fan of marriage, so I doubt I'll be applying the term "husband", though we might register a domestic partnership if that ever seems useful. Partner is the least objectionable to me, but I'm not in love with it either.

Rob said...

I totally just truped myself with itunes.

it was on random, so during the pitching change i went and hit play, and it was the intro of some song id never heard. then i was like "wow, this singer sounds like remy"

turns out the game went back on :P

laura k said...

"Boyfriend" feels like someone you are dating but not someone with whom you have a long-term stable relationship.

Right. We stopped using that after we moved in together, or soon after.

We sometimes use husband/wife because it's easier (dealing with employers, for example), but in our real lives, it's always partner.

Although Canada recognizes us a common-law marriage. (Thank you, Canada.)

tim said...

I don't have a problem with partners, in fact I think it's a lot better than boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife...generic words. And I understand what it means. But like I said before, for every 100 times I hear/read the word "partner" - 99 of them are referring to some sort of business terminology, so it's embedded in me as a business term.

People can call each other whatever they want, I don't really care. You just won't catch me referring to someone as my "significant other" - that's the (IMO, pseudo-quasi-shit) term that irks me the most. It just sounds so...cosmically strange. I'm not a fan.

terms like "significant other" or "life partner" sound forced -- as opposed to "insignifciant other" or "2-years-only partner"?

Sounds simple enough. I was kind of generalizing there. But the mind can play a large factor. Just look at Manny lately. He's still got a lot of power in his bat, but he can't get his bat on the ball enough to drive it out. How can Josh Beckett throw strikes all day and MDC can't? Or either can or can't. Could be mechanics. Could be he's overthinking it.

It just reeks of lameness. I'm just glad I didn't have to see BJ Ryan come in with his completely over the top, cheesy Skydome intro. What with the generic hard rock guitar and flaming "BJ RYAN" graphics spinning around on the wall-scoreboards. Ugh. I really don't wanna get on a rant on the number of things wrong with that place. I've said enough for now, time to watch the rest of this game in peace.

some guys are great and some aren't ....some with one pitch like Rivera .....

The guys who aren't have the ability to be good. Look at Lester's last start.

But yeah. We've kinda beat that one to death.

Moss is looking real good tonight. And a great hand-tag on home plate!

I watched the end of the Yankee game last night and the Tigers releiver had walked like 2 guys throwing shit ...Leyland comes out and talks to him and then the catcher never gives a sign again .....nothing but fastballs game over leaves to guys stranded......MDC should go out there and just throw fastballs..see what happens..

nice slide by mossy!

and w00t tek!

That sounds like a good idea. Things can get a little confusing when you're throwing three pitches in relief. Papelbon comes in and airs it out.

it was inevitable. white flag being raised.

Redsock- quick call - Bot still goes in?

allan said...

has he got up? i was expecting it.

tim said...

Yeah, I don't see why MDC is pissing around with 3 pitches. Use the FB and, if he has to, throw his curve. Ditch the changeup altogether.

I don't know if he is warming ....

though at 4 runs, the lead is too big for a save -- so tito will likely say no.

did tim hint at timlin?

Rob said...

My guess is Timlin would come in, and if there's trouble, Bot will be called. Timlin hasn't pitched in a few games.

tim said...

NESN just showed timlin warming...

Castig said both were warming.

My fingers are crossed.....

Interesting move to walk Jacoby with just the man on second. Madden really wants a DP from DP.

9-1-2 for the rays in the 9th.

tim said...

clearly since its a 4-run lead, timlin will be coming in.

LBJ getting some respect. Nice.

FY will make them pay.

allan said...

more free baserunners - yay!

Rob said...

I like Madden's logic.
