Boston is now 23-14 (101-win pace); only Arizona (23-12) has a better record.

Time for some insurance, Mr. FY

"Lugo's been having some ups and downs lately."

Mostly downs.

Jere said...

if he doesn't get his glove down, his time will be up

Rob said...

Mostly downs.

Yeah. That's definitely the truth right there. I wonder how much Theo thinks about it these days.

Jere said...

make them pay

Are you gonna just watch them walk your bro, Man Ram? Let's not have any of this!

laura k said...

Ish with the 201!

Twins TV trivia. Last Red Sox to lead the AL in hits? Name and year.

Rob said...

We're actually doing very well with comments tonight. Nice and lively. And we're only in the 6th.

laura k said...

OK Manny, two strikes, do your thing...

Patrick said...

I hear too often these days, "you usually don't see Manny do _______"

laura k said...

Twins anncrs:

"You think he's setting him up?"

"Who, Ramirez or Rincon?"

laura k said...

Damn, not that thing. But we still have the lead.

Twins TV trivia. Last Red Sox to lead the AL in hits? Name and year.

Is this supposed to be an easy question? From a Twins perspective, I'd think the most notable Red Sox hitter (batting champ hitter, etc.) would be Nomar. 1999 or so.

What did they say about it?

laura k said...

"We're actually doing very well with comments tonight. Nice and lively."

I'm glad cause I'm not threading every game now. When I first checked in I was chatting with myself.

Jere said...

Well Nomar had a shitload of hits the year he hit like .372 or whatever

laura k said...

I don't know if it was supposed to be easy. It was the Aflac q.

It was Nomar. But I'm not sure it was 99. (Anyone?)

Twins guys guessed Boggs.

Patrick said...

I'm surprised and glad to see Lester still out there.

Jere said...

When Lugo goes after a ball up the middle, he yields instead of merges.

Patrick said...

haha spoke too soon

laura k said...

Just checked, Nomar's batting title was 99.

Jere said...

His rookie year of 97 was the hit-leading year

laura k said...

"When Lugo goes after a ball up the middle, he yields instead of merges."

Maybe he'll take the early exit.

Patrick said...

its '97 with 207

Rob said...

Damn. I was close.

laura k said...

97, that's what I thought! I should have said it.

Bah. Should trust myself more.

Jere said...

Nomar also won batting title in 2000. Could've had more hits that year than in '97 but he got intentionally walked 20 times

Jere said...

I show 209 hits in '97, not 207. Did the Twins channel say 207?

laura k said...

In 2000? I didn't remember that. But I did remember it was in his rookie year in 97.

I walk around saying "That's what I thought, I should have said it" all the time.

allan said...

When Lugo goes after a ball up the middle, he yields instead of merges.

The fork in the road is actually in his back.

laura k said...

No idea what they said. I only saw Nomar, not year or # of hits.

laura k said...

"The fork in the road is actually in his back."

Cold but true.

Rob said...

RED SOX RELAY FTW!

Patrick said...

BWAHAHAHHA!

laura k said...

YER OUT!!!11!!

Jere said...

Out at the plate! Sweet!

laura k said...

Hahaha, shoulda stopped at 3rd, sucka!

Jere said...

To clarify: Nomar led AL in hits in '97. Led in batting average in '99 and 2000.

Patrick said...

Nomar:

Hits
1997 AL-209-1
1998 AL-195-5
1999 AL-190-9
2000 AL-197-5
2002 AL-197-5
2003 AL-198-5

My bad, 209

Rob said...

Remy, It's moot. Ball beat him, plate was blocked. It's an out.

Radio guys talked about how one angle showed safe, one showed out. One showed his foot was over the plate but not on it.

O'Brien, to Castig: "What do you think?"

Joe C: "Well, the umpire said he's out, so he's out."

SoSock said...

Joe C: "Well, the umpire said he's out, so he's out."

Amen.
Do you know how many times I've tried to get that point across to my LL'ers?

Jere said...

double-commercial.

allan said...

Remy, It's moot. Ball beat him, plate was blocked. It's an out.

This is one reason Remy can be an idiot. Even if the ball beats him and the plate is blocked, but he touches the plate before he's tagged, he's safe.

Go sell a t-shirt.

SoSock said...

hmmm

Isn't that like a rap song song or something?

Rob said...

Jeemer Time!

Jere said...

So key by Youk there.

SoSock said...

GDGD shows a coaching visit to mound to start the inning

???

Rob said...

But, this is where things get dicey. Jeemer's out there, but it's the 7th inning. With a one-run cushion. We'll see how this goes. This is where I wish MDC was pitching to his potential.

Jere said...

Popped Him Up. Keep hackin', Twins

Rob said...

GDGD shows a coaching visit to mound to start the inning

Francona went out after the warm-up pitches had been thrown.

SoSock said...

3 Pitches - 2 Outs

Nice

Jere said...

sosock, yes, that's what I meant by "double commercial." They were just giving Oki extra warm-up time.

Rob said...

So key by Youk there.

Good heads-up by Pedroia to get to first, as well.

Patrick said...

You down with OPP? Ya you know me!

Jere said...

allan said...

Jeemer and Bot over 3 innings?

Rob said...

KEY right there. Very few pitches thrown in the inning.

Amy said...

Good evening, all. How's the game been? I see we are ahead, but Lester gave up 5 runs. I have to go check the box score while we are at a break in the inning.

allan said...

With only 6 pitches there, maybe!

Idiot Twins.

Rob said...

Jeemer and Bot over 3 innings?

At this rate, I think Jeemer and Bot can get it done.

Bot's been pitching a lot lately, hasn't he?

Jere said...

We won't need Pap with the 9-run frame we're about to lay on 'em.

SoSock said...

Jeemer's out there, but it's the 7th inning.

6 pitches - I think he's good for another :)

So, did Aardsmama warm up, then Tito thought better, or did Jeemer go out to start, and Tito went out to confer?

laura k said...

I just got back from taking care of the pups. What did I miss? Score is the same I see.

Hi Amy! I finally make it to a thread and you weren't here.

Rob said...

Evan Longoria hit a walk-off 2 run home run to break a scoreless tie with the Angels. James Shields threw a complete game ONE-hitter.

Rob said...

On the other side of the ledger, Jon Garland threw 8 innings, giving up just 4 hits.

Rob said...

Lugo: 24 Ks this year.

Patrick said...

My goodness, I need a power nap to help me through this one.

Jere said...

sosock, everything was normal up until the inning was about to start. Then Tito made the change. He was just allowing Oki to be fully ready by having Aaaa throw his warmups. So, basically, the infielders got twice as much infield practice.

Amy said...

Hi Laura. Yes, I have missed you. We were out til now. Luckily (?) the game started late so I made it for the last three innings.

Harvey was at the Yankee game yesterday. He was happy they won---for a change.

laura k said...

Cause it's late or cause it's boring? Or because you didn't get enough zeds last night?

Rob said...

This dude will go on my all-burly team.

Jere said...

this feels like an average-length game to me. (2008 average)

Amy said...

Every time I hear Evan Longoria I think they are talking about Eva Longoria. Strange almost name twin.

Nice! Go, LBJ!

Patrick said...

hahah...Zeds...

Jere said...

Is Mark Buehrle on that squad?

laura k said...

I'm glad they won if Harvey was there. I mean, they have to win sometime, so it might as well be the games Harvey goes to.

I used to want the Sox to win whenever Allan saw them, because he didn't get to see them often.

laura k said...

Longoria, yes, we all do. I think Jere calls him Eva.

allan said...

do we need some insurance? fuck yeah we do!

Rob said...

hahah...Zeds...

Those are British, you know. Heh.

I love when they talk about a car, like the BMW Zed 4, or the Nissan 350 Zed. etc etc.

Amy said...

Yes, I felt very noble hoping that the Yankees won for Harvey since it is likely his last time ever at the old Stadium.

Of course, if the game was against the Sox or in September, I doubt I would be as noble.

allan said...

reyes gives up two singles over 4 pitches.

gradyhire shaking his head in the dugout!! heh heh

SoSock said...

Setting the table for the big dogs.

laura k said...

It's not that long a game. It started at 8. It's 11:00 now (almost) and we're in the 8th. Normal these days, like Jere said.

Rob said...

Is Mark Buehrle on that squad?

He might as well be. But he'd be the fifth starter because he's got to be the most physically fit player on the team. David Wells would be the #1 starter.

Patrick said...

Must be because it's late, L

laura k said...

Zeds are Canadian, too. That's why I said them. :)

Amy said...

I sure would have liked those insurance runs.

SoSock said...

Sure would be nice to get our old Papi back about now.
But alas......

laura k said...

The new old Yankee Stadium, that is. The old Yankee Stadium hasn't existed since 1973.

Jere said...

I think of zeds as strictly Canadian. (Thanks, "You Can't Do That on Television" and other Canadian-made Nickelodeon shows.)

Amy said...

Would they really say catching some zeds? Have the British and Canadians always said zed instead of Z? If so, why do we say Z?

laura k said...

Ortiz has been coming around. He's hit in his last 8 (or 9?) games, with 3 HRs and a few doubles. That doesn't suck.

Rob said...

Zeds are Canadian, too. That's why I said them. :)

Ahh. Gotcha. Surprised I didn't know that by now.

laura k said...

I said catching some zeds as a joke. But Canadians say zed. It's a dead giveaway of Americans in Canada, zee vs zed.

Your other questions, I don't know.

Joe Grav said...

Good morning everyone. I'm back just in time to see us close out the win.

Amy said...

The new old Yankee Stadium, that is. The old Yankee Stadium hasn't existed since 1973.

Yes, though at least it stands where the old one stood, unlike the new new one.

Rob said...

Speaking of someone catching his Zeds...

Jere said...

zed is the metric Z

Joe Grav said...

Not enough zeds.

Patrick said...

You can also catch a Canadian out of a crowd if they ask for the 'washroom'.

laura k said...

I like this all burly team. Is it a polite way of saying the All Tubby Team?

Don't forget Fritters (Fetters to most people, but Fritters to me and Allan) and of course El Guapo.

Amy said...

Oki gets him!

Jere said...

wikipedia:

"In American English dialects, its name is zee /ziː/, deriving from a late 17th-century English dialectal form. "

Rob said...

You can also catch a Canadian out of a crowd if they ask for the 'washroom'.

And the Canadian companies who label their restrooms as Washrooms.

Irving Blue Canoe, for example.

laura k said...

I've got washroom down now. :)

I think of it is catching an American out when they say bathroom or rest room.

SoSock said...

Between innings blather -
We got creamed last night. About 10 minutes after I shut down the puter we were watching the weather alerts that had taken over every station and they showed a tornado about 4-5 miles from us touching down.
Passed within about 1/2 mile of us. Took off 2 roofs (rooves?) in my sister's neighborhood about 2 miles away.
Totally destroyed 6 houses within about 4 miles the other way from us.
Our power was out from 10pm last night till about 9:30 this AM.

Scary Shit!

Rob said...

El Guapo

He's my set-up man. Bobby Jenks is the closer.

Jere said...

we go to the ninth!

Amy said...

It's mostly the "ou" pronunciation that gives away the Canadian background for me. I have had many Canadian students, and that's always the dead giveaway. Haven't heard any zeds or washrooms.

Patrick said...

¡slooɟ noʎ uʍo ıɾɐʞo

laura k said...

"Yes, though at least it stands where the old one stood, unlike the new new one."

Doesn't matter. Everyone is acting like the original Yankee Stadium is leaving, and we haven't seen it in 35 years. It annoys me no end.

SoSock said...

15 pitches!
I love how the Twinkies are helping us out here. Damn friendly of them.
I wonder if Tito will let him come on back?

Amy said...

Sosock, I remember you worrying about the storm last night---but a TORNADO---wow, scary. Everyone ok?

Jere said...

I thought Juan Berenguer would be your closer.

Patrick said...

Or how you pronounce aboot

Rob said...

Sosock... Amazing. I heard about those tornadoes on the news tonight. You must get some bad thunderstorms down there in the summer, but tornadoes must be somewhat rare, right?

laura k said...

The Canadian raising. The little "oo" that is always there. No matter how long someone lives in the US, it never goes away. Peter Jennings still had it - and Alex Trebec. It's not the "aboot" of cartoons, it's just a little "ou" in the "ou".

But zed and washroom are big.

Jere said...

Though farther (barely) from the original spot, the new YS should resemble the old more than the renovated one did.

Joe Grav said...

I have a Japanese mancrush on Okajima

Rob said...

I'm not sure how I'd fare in a tornado. Though, last night I went out looking for one that apparently was forming. Saw a couple of funnel clouds, actually. But jeez. At night it must be so scary.

laura k said...

Tornado! Wow, I had to scroll way back to catch that one. Hope you're all ok!

laura k said...

"El Guapo

He's my set-up man. Bobby Jenks is the closer."

I know who your DH is. Tony Gwynn.

Joe Grav said...

ITS ABOOT RESPECT! ITS ABOOT DIGNITEH!

Amy said...

I never was at the old pre-73Yankee Stadium, but Harvey was many times growing up. I think he sees the current one as a renovation, whereas this new one will lead to the destruction of that old one.

Patrick said...

I get gallons of real sauerkraut from a local company here in New England. IT'S SOOOOOOOOO GOOD.

Joe Grav said...

I saw Guapo pitch last year for the Nashua Pride. He closed out their victory in the Can Am League championship series against the North Shore Spirit.

laura k said...

I think "mancrush" is banned for homophobia here. Just have a crush. A nice old fashioned crush. What the hell. Oki deserves your love.

Rob said...

I know who your DH is. Tony Gwynn.

Oh yeah. Papi's not quite there yet. This ain't about winning.

Prince Fielder 1B

allan said...

I think "mancrush" is banned for homophobia here. Just have a crush. A nice old fashioned crush.

The way Andy talks about the team, that is more true than ever!

laura k said...

Well he's wrong. :)

If it was a renovation, why did they call it "the new Yankee Stadium" for so many years?

Rob said...

The rest of the position players would be rather hard to figure. They're all annoying physically fit.

Youk with the legs!

Amy said...

SAFE!

Jere said...

I was born during the renovation. So on the day I was born, the Yanks played a home game at Shea Stadium.

laura k said...

Right, it's about sheer size. Prince and Cecil can be on the same team!

Speaking of which, I have a new player on my girls' team. Matt Joyce. We saw him in Detroit. I was able to use my "runs like a girl" line.

allan said...

speaking of tubs of goo, i think david wells said he wants to pitch for the chokers again.

laura k said...

I first saw the Yankees at Shea. I never went to the original Stadium. I wish someone had taken me.

Amy said...

Harvey wrong?? No way, not ever. :)

Rob said...

Matt Joyce. We saw him in Detroit. I was able to use my "runs like a girl" line.

Oh, that's exciting! You don't come across one of those very often these days.

Jere said...

yeah Remy and Don were talking about Wells earlier

Rob said...

I guess Jesse Crain would be on the all-birds team...

laura k said...

Andy's "love" is in a league of its own.

Rob said...

speaking of tubs of goo, i think david wells said he wants to pitch for the chokers again.

I heard that too. I also heard that Hank doesn't seem to have a problem with it, if you can believe that.

He probably wants more fat guys like him on the team.

Joe Grav said...

I don't know. I think there's a difference between a mancrush and a crush. It's not that I want to have Okajima's children, I just admire his MANLY traits in a very MANLY sort of way. God Bless Amurrica.

laura k said...

Crain on the birds team, that's nice.

I guess he could also be on the construction equipment team, but I don't know how far that would get.

SoSock said...

Dr. D comes thru!

We're all fine. No one in my family had damage, although we were all very close.

I saw 2 houses on my way out to a job in Advance, NC (about 7 miles from me) today with roofs missing. Pretty freaky.
And yes,Amy. Tornados are relatively rare, but we are going to get a bad one it seems every 4-5 years.

allan said...

tek - do something tangible.

Amy said...

First Yankee game I saw was at Shea also (I had seen many Mets games there, but had never been to a Yankee game until I met Harvey in 1973, though we didn't go to a game until probably 74). Harvey, however, had gone to YS as a kid many times and worked there in high school.

Uch, two more insurance runs lost.

Patrick said...

To translate Grav's sentence into 'Andy tongue' he would say: I'd like Okajima do me.

Rob said...

I guess he could also be on the construction equipment team, but I don't know how far that would get.

Or the all-origami team.

laura k said...

crushes have nothing to do with wanting someone's children! do you think i'm planning to procreate with ellsbury??

Jere said...

Why is it that you almost never see footage of the Yanks' games at Shea in '74 and '75? Obviously not making the post-season helped, but still...

allan said...

I guess he could also be on the construction equipment team, but I don't know how far that would get.

Yeah. There's got to be a difference. I'd say it's more of envy and admiration. Someone you'd like to be, perhaps. Whether it'd be to have their talent, their looks, etc.

Joe Grav said...

I'm sure Andy's tongue would say the same thing.

Patrick said...

They should replace Lugo with Lowrie as SS for this half.

Joe Grav said...

Exactly ish.

Amy said...

I hope Pap has better luck tonight.

laura k said...

It it's envy and admiration, then it ain't a crush.

I think the whole man-crush, man-hug, man-date thing is completely homophobic. Two men hug, it's a hug. Get over it!

(Not directed at anyone here, all you guys are over it already.)

Rob said...

I hope Pap has better luck tonight.

Delmon Young doesn't.

laura k said...

OUTS PLEASE!!!

Joe Grav said...

fuck

Patrick said...

Before Pap's last outing, we wouldn't be sweating this at all!

Joe Grav said...

I can see what you mean L, although I think the true homophobes won't even admit that they 'man-hug' people. I think a lot of the 'man hug,' 'man crush' stuff is sort of done to be funny or ironic.

Amy said...

Yeah, one blown save, and I am nervous for him.

Joe Grav said...

OK

laura k said...

Yeah, it wasn't so much fun to see Pap blow a save the other night. Allan kept saying it was bad luck, but a blown save is a blown save. You sit down three guys in a row, you cancel out the bad luck.

SoSock said...

I think the whole man-crush, man-hug, man-date thing is completely homophobic. Two men hug, it's a hug. Get over it!

Actually, we agree. It's just fun to say. :)
And it REALLY annoys conservatives, which makes it even better.

Rob said...

Yeah, one blown save, and I am nervous for him.

These bunts and little duck snorts and things will do that. Gotta shut 'em down right here right now.

Joe Grav said...

that it does

laura k said...

They are acting like it's funny or ironic, but if they weren't uncomfortable with the idea, they wouldn't have to say it.

There's all levels of homophobia (like every prejudice). Not like they want to hurt anyone or wish bad things on them, but it's not nothing to them, it's still an issue. Or else why say anything?

allan said...

tek catching some zeds on that SB?

Joe Grav said...

Patrick said...

K HIM BOTMAN!

Rob said...

Termel Sledge... kind of halfway to the construction team.

SoSock said...

Construction Equip. - Chipper Jones

Amy said...

OK, feeling better with two outs.

Man-crush does seem somehow sexist more than homophobic though a bit of both. Like it isn't a girl crush with silliness, but manly. I never think of it as sexual like a crush when I hear it---more like idolizing someone one. That's why I never heard it as homophobic, I guess. But definitely sexist sounding.

laura k said...

Come on Bot, just a little more...

[Shovel Hodge, wow!]

Joe Grav said...

s0n of a b1tch

laura k said...

Okay... a little more than that...

Joe Grav said...

Mancrush seems to go along with the whole "I'm not gay... not that there'se anything wrong with that" thing. I've never seen a problem with it, but I guess I can see y'alls point.

Rob said...

I don't disagree with the homophobia thing. I think most straight guys are homophobic in a personal sense. Afraid of being suspected of being gay, etc. Even if they don't have any problem with other guys being gay.

The key to these 9th innings for Pap is to not make it tense. Make your pitches and you'll be able to put these guys away.
