G40: Twins 9, Red Sox 8

Red Sox - 001 300 202 - 8 15 1
Twins - 052 100 10x - 9 10 1
Wakefield (2.2-7-7-2-2, 74) put the Sox in an early 7-1 hole, but the bats would not give up.

In the fourth, Crisp's leadoff triple and singles from Cash, Cora and Youkilis closed the gap to 7-4. Ococ then smacked a two-run home run to right-center in the seventh to bring the Sox to within two runs, 8-6.

Aardsma did good work, holding Minnesota scoreless in the fifth and sixth. But then Timlin came on for the bottom of the seventh and served up a home run to Monroe (who had opened the Twins scoring with a three-run dong in the second). Twins 9-6. But after the first-batter bomb, Old Yeller retired the next five batters on only 11 pitches, thus probably earning another appearance or three in Tito's eyes.

Down by three and facing Nathan in the ninth, the Sox rallied. With one out, Youkilis and Lowell singled. Drew doubled over Gomez's head in center, bringing in Yook. With the tying run at second, Crisp lined the ball back at (and off) Nathan, who quickly grabbed the ball and was able to toss to third, nailing Drew, who had to hesitate before running in case the ball was caught. Lowell was able to score and the Sox trailed 9-8. With Manny batting for Cash, Ococ stole second, but Ramirez hit a routine grounder to short for the final out.

Tampa's 8-5 win over the Angels cut Boston's lead in the East to 1.5 games.

***
Tim Wakefield (3.33, 130 ERA+) / Nick Blackburn (3.65, 108 ERA+)

Alex Cora was activated and Jed Lowrie was sent to Pawtucket. Sean Casey is with the Sox, but has not been added to the roster.

Manny Ramirez gets the night off.

Bryan Corey has been traded to the Padres for a PTBNL/$.

andy with the 201.

Rob said...

No!

Crazy Andy gets 201 tonight. I pass my fictional (yet equally awesome) mojo to him.

What do you think is Joe Castiglione's favorite word?

I think burly.

I'm so over Mike Timlin, although I was never really under him.

Rob said...

Farrell, to Timlin: "Don't worry, Mike. You're still the best pitcher in the game."

Timlin: "Yep. I know."

andy said...

oh shit 201.
my first 201

Benjamin said...

Apparently, with a small sample size, Cora is Manny when 0-2.

SoSock said...

Cora - chasing Lugo out of a job?
We can only hope.

nixon33 said...

this twins reliever's hat has a chin-strap!

allan said...

nice return for einstein: 3-for-4.

Patrick said...

Cora helping us forget Lowrie.

nick said...

l-girl, comes from an old (lame) joke. answer: "this guy" with the appropriate thumbs pointing in gesture.

I, in actuality, do not hate lugo. He's still an underdog to me. Timlin, on the other hand....

Patrick said...

Damn you Jacoby! Damn you and your good looks.

allan said...

Farrell, to Timlin: "Don't worry, Mike. You're still the best pitcher in the game."

Timlin: "Yep. I know."

Farrell, to Timlin: "You suck. Why does Tito keep pitching you?"

Timlin: "You know why. And I got some pix of you with those young boys too."

nixon33 said...

FY...Fuck No

9casey said...

Ellsbury better step up his game...Crisp is doing well with his time

andy said...

Nixon had the line of the day with this chin strap. I spit wine on my wife when i saw him. Just imagine what she spit on me when she saw the asshole.

Patrick said...

I'm going into my secret dugout in my mind to freak out for a few minutes.

Patrick said...

Was it soda, Andy?

nick said...

thank god timlin's still in.

Rob said...

Setting up for another mother's day miracle.

Just sayin.

allan said...

give old yeller another inning?

capital idea!!

why not? this game is over anyway.

24-16 is still pretty good.

andy said...

It was Horchata.

nick said...

ellsworth again!

Rob said...

ellsworth again!

Jeez. He should put in for a job in the Twins radio booth.

andy said...

I miss Gagne. It was pure gold to have Gagne and Timlin in the same game.

9casey said...

Ish nice avatar....

allan said...

Sure, Timlin gave up the dong to the first batter he faced.

But then he retired 5 batters on 11 pitches.

Thus earning him another couple of chances in Tito's eyes.

And so it continues on and on and on .....

nick said...

no home runs yet for such a strapping fieldhand.

Patrick said...

I want our mothers day miracle to be made with a bomb from a pinch hit from Tek.

I am trying to understand something here. Please help me. Why do the Red Sox, a seemingly intelligent team, keep a guy like Timlin or an alien like Lugo? Why do they tolerate it? Can't we afford other players? hell we got cash for Corey. Don't we have any guys in the minors that can pitch better than Timlin or field and hit better than Lugo?
Oh yeah we do. Hansen and Lowrie. Why do they not cut these two assholes?

Rob said...

LYNDON WITH A WEBGEM!!

Rob said...

And a rugburn.

allan said...

ELLSWORTH!!!!!!!!!!!

andy said...

oooh i saw the dirt burn on lbj's elbow

Rob said...

If Joe Morgan were in this chat he'd probably say Lynwood.

nick said...

ELLSWORTH!!!!!!!!!!!

that got an audible one out of me. thanks.

nixon33 said...

WORTH!

Patrick said...

It's all about the depth Andy.

andy said...

I do not care about this game because I know that 2/3 of the games this team plays will be wins. I am just in awe of the fact that they allow such shitty players to continue to participate.

Patrick said...

EWWWW .69 era 11 for 11 in saves.

That pretty line can't last.

andy said...

Depth? Lowrie, Cora and Pedroia can cover most of the Middle IF with Casey and youk and Lowell covering the corners. Thats plenty of depth.

andy said...

manny pinch hit?

Rob said...

manny pinch hit? I heard Manny's hamstring was bothering him a little.

allan said...

I am trying to understand something here. Please help me.

Well, we don't know everything about these guys like the Sox do.

They want Lowrie to play every day and he's not going to do that in Boston. With the rest of the lineup as potent as it is, they'll live with Lugo considering the contract they signed him to. I didn't think he'd hit .350, but I expected him to be somewhat better than he has shown.

Hansen and Timlin -- not sure. Hansen looks like he can handle it -- and if he can't, why fill his spot with Old Y.?

andy said...

Manny you have to understand the difference between being hurt and being injured.

Rob said...

Patrick said...

OK. Load it up for Cash, while getting the second out. Then put in Tek to pinch hit. Grand Salami. Dirty Water. No problem.

andy said...

I don't care what contract they signed this fucker to. Trade him or send him to Triple A Pawtucket. He needs to know that he will not be an automatic start when he's healthy.

9casey said...

I'm not sure the Red Sox see Lowrie as their next ss...they mentioned it on the pregame the other night.......

nick said...

do you bat manny for ococ? if it comes to that.

9casey said...

Andy said...
send him to Triple A Pawtucket. He needs to know that he will not be an automatic start when he's healthy.

Get a clue.....

andy said...

Why the fuck not? they are loaded for a year or two on the IF outside of SS

allan said...

Trade him or send him to Triple A Pawtucket.

1. Who would want his contract?

2. I don't think they can do that without his permission.

Don't worry. He's signed through 2010 with a vesting option for 2011. He'll be gone soon!

Rob said...

do you bat manny for ococ? if it comes to that.

Good question. The Oc has been swinging the bat better than Manny, but Manny is... Manny.

andy said...

Sorry Casey I just want Lugo to not be an arrogant asshole who suck balls and should not be in the MLB.

Rob said...

Manny's got a helmet.

Corners, 1 out... Tying run... with ON FIRE!!! coming up.

nick said...

The Oc has been swinging the bat better than Manny, but Manny is... Manny.

exactly. manny's gearing up....

allan said...

JD: light my fire!

s1c said...

Would love to see a ON FIRE!!! dong right now!!!

allan said...

Think ALCS 6, baby!

Patrick said...

I'd rather have put Manny in for Drew than Coco. Coco can hit, I say let him.

andy said...

So trade Lugo. Get him the fuck out of here. Obviously we can do well without him.

Rob said...

So trade Lugo. Get him the fuck out of here. Obviously we can do well without him.

I wonder if they'd consider it this July. Depends on the market, I guess.

andy said...

Come on man who looks like me. I love drew.

nick said...

holy fuck fuck!!!

Rob said...

ON FIRE!!!!

Thank you, Young Gomez.

ocoC is up... Manny's on deck.

andy said...

holy fuck fuck is right

s1c said...

Oh baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they pinch hit with MBM, then they will walk him to face Ka Ching or Tek.

Patrick said...

....Don't tease me boys. Give it to me

Rob said...

Come on, Oc!

Slap one down the left field line. Pull one up that right field line. Hit it to right center. Anything to get Drew home!

andy said...

i am totally over wakefield starting this game now.

SoSock said...

Hey, this is kinda fun, isn't it?

allan said...

ococ is a single and double away from the cycle.

andy said...

coke is trying too hard now.

s1c said...

Fragging kidding me.

andy said...

FUN

Rob said...

Oh man. Big big big break for the Twinkies. That ball was headed to CF.

2 out for Manny. Tying run at first, so the task gets that much harder.

Patrick said...

Oh man, that was bad.

andy said...

painful.

Rob said...

Here's the point where Castig says "Old Abner's done it again."

Rob said...

Manny vs. Nathan: 0 for 6, 5 K

allan said...

I WANT MY MUMMY!

Rob said...

COCO WHEELS!

andy said...

if we win i am jumping thru my sliding glass door

Patrick said...

I wish it was Tek up there. But Man Ram can do this.

s1c said...

Speed kills baby, speed kills!!!

This ain't your grand mama's Sox.

nick said...

I can't forgive Wake yet, but this is indigestionable fun.

allan said...

Patrick said...

OK, RISP again. We can do this.

andy said...

right joe morgan we only wait when it comes to killing lugo

Rob said...

Crap.

The dirty almost made it, but the water is clean.

allan said...

andy said...

no way. is it really over? everything was 2004 right there.

laura k said...

damn

just thought i'd check in to see how you guys were coping with the end of the world

andy said...

well i expect the yankees will win the east this year.

Thats for L.

nick said...

damn. now I have to go to the laundromat. I still "like" this loss a lot more than a 7-1 game.

laura k said...

thanks andy :)

i'm glad you didn't have to jump thru a glass door

allan said...

doody.

Rob said...

just thought i'd check in to see how you guys were coping with the end of the world

I blame Timlin and Lugo. And Francona. And Babe Ruth. He must have done something wrong as well.

Don't look. I don't want you to see the tears forming. I'm gonna go cut myself now. /sarcasm (for L)

SoSock said...

Boo, hiss

laura k said...

nick, i agree. this was a good game, except for the losing part.

9casey said...

Every game they play in lately it seems has drama.........

laura k said...

even i understood that sarcasm, ish.

oh well. still in 1st. more baseball tomorrow.

night night.

andy said...

I am still in awe of the fact that we did not win. That was not right how it ended. It ended like the Sopranos did.

Rob said...

nick, i agree. this was a good game, except for the losing part.

All you gotta look at is the fact that it was 7-1 Twins at one point. Then the Red Sox end up losing by only one run, with the tying run in scoring position. Anything can happen at that point. This time it was a grounder the short.

Rob said...

even i understood that sarcasm, ish.

Just making sure.

allan said...

never blame babe ruth for anything.

andy said...

Every post 9casey has lately seems to have periods....

nick said...

not that I've ever seen an episode of the Sopranos, but I went to an editing workshop not so long ago where the guy leading it thought that was an amazing end and one day it will be heralded.

SoSock said...

I'm certainly not planning on slashing any wrists or anything.
Well, not mine anyway.
Timlin now.......
hmmm......

SoSock said...

More periods.....

andy said...

I do love the Sopranos end. I am still getting over it. It was perfect. This game tonight was a loss, but it was so perfect a loss that i love it. I am still waiting to see how it ends. Thats how unexpected it was. how sudden it was. Perfect.

s1c said...

Aaargh, once again the Sox can't get over the .500 mark on the road.

Aaargh, since 2001 the Sox are now 8-16 at the HH dome. I freaking hate that place.

Hmmm, HH dome and HH is starting tomorrow, hmmm...........

andy said...

ok what the fuck. i just am now watching my recording of the HBO Bloggers show. Why was Ken Tremendous not on the panel but a writer for the stupid teeny show friday night lights on the panel?

andy said...

I would like all the posters aim addresses. I would like to continue the conversations many times after the approval thing is turned back on.
what if you had an AIM chat as a game thread then you copied the chat log as your blog entry?

Patrick said...

There's always 2009. Unless, of course, there isn't.

Rob said...

I wonder if Ruth ever knocked any of them up. If so, I wonder how many, and if any of them turned out to become baseball players.

laura k said...

You know, that's an interesting question in another way, too. I think he was probably unable to have kids. Both his daughters were adopted.

Jack Marshall said...

A storm knocked out my satellite, so I watched the game at my folks' house. When Timlin gave up the homer, Dad (89 next month!) says: "That's the end for Timlin!" I know Redsock argues otherwise, but something's up...that sure looked like an audition last night, and I don't know why they waited to activate Casey if something wasn't in the works for today.

I sure hope so.
What an excellent game, though!
