G41: Twins 7, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 300 000 000 - 3 12 1
Twins - 202 030 00x - 7 11 0
Buchholz struggled again (4.1-8-7-5-4, 90) and the Red Sox's early 3-0 lead -- helped by Manny Ramirez's #498 career home run -- vanished.

Unlike Sunday night, there was no comeback. Although Minnesota retired the Red Sox in order only once, Boston had no runner advance past second base from the second to the ninth innings. Indeed, after the first, only three Red Sox made it past first.

J.D. Drew went 3-for-4 and Alex Cora and Manny each had two hits. Craig Hansen pitched a perfect seventh inning -- two groundouts and a strikeout on 13 pitches.

Tampa beat New York 7-1 -- and are now .5 GB Boston in the East.

***

Clay Buchholz (4.50, 97 ERA+) / Livan Hernandez (3.83, 104 ERA+)

Buchholz has a drastic home/road split this year:
GS ERA IP H R HR BB SO BABIP
Home 3 1.04 17.1 14 2 0 9 15 .298
Road 4 7.40 20.2 27 18 3 6 24 .381
2nd-place Tampa hosts the .500 Yankees, also at 7 PM (Pettitte/Garza).

TIMMMMMMBERRRRRRRRRRRR!

Patrick said...

Asking for runs at 201. Could be a good omen.

allan said...

202!

yay me!

Sarah Haendler said...

Well, I'll be damned, I apparently have my choice of ESPN or FSN.

Hmmmm...

Jere said...

I got 200. I was the headliner of the first group.

laura k said...

we have espn on the EI thing

allan said...

Well, I'll be damned, I apparently have my choice of ESPN or FSN.

Should I slit my left wrist or my right wrist?

laura k said...

that won't fly, jere. it's 201 or the highway.

Jere said...

Yanks have hit into 3 DPs in the last four innings.

laura k said...

you too allan. i didn't see your comment before.

Jere said...

Arroyo's on third. Did you check, L?

laura k said...

i keep forgetting to look!

Jere said...

"that won't fly, jere. it's 201 or the highway."

That sounds like something an *opening act* would say, haha.

Patrick said...

Wow, we might make it through this half.

Sarah Haendler said...

I'm torn about which group of gomers to listen to here, now that I'm aware that I have the option. ESPN has the HD advantage. FSN has more green screen and less ad behind home. There appears to be a two or three second delay between them too. Sort of interesting.

laura k said...

two words: steve phillips

run away, run away!

Jere said...

great job by Cora. Goofy Bronson stranded at third.

Sorry to be so absent---we got new kittens so I have been distracted. Given the way the game has been going, that's a good thing.

laura k said...

new kittens??!! tell us more!

Sarah Haendler said...

Kittens?! Cool!

Jere said...

kittens rule

laura k said...

sarah, the bassoonist is a go

Jere said...

"we got new kittens"

Lemme guess: Ted and Joe

Amy said...

They are seven weeks old, brother and sister. One is gray and white, the other black and white. Smokey and Luna, respectively.

Very, very cute. Our two prior cats both died within a year (one was 18, the other 17), so we were ready now for new babies.

Cassie (the dog) is very happy to have new members of the pack.

laura k said...

congratulations!! sounds wonderful. please post pictures soon!!

Amy said...

Actually, Jere, my daughter suggested Varitek or maybe Tek, but I sort of like my pet names to be pet names, not named for people!

Amy said...

Thanks! They are walking on the laptop, so if strange characters appear....

How do I post photos?

Patrick said...

Looking at old statistics, I don't understand why Cal Ripken ever won an MVP award. Can someone fill me in on what the stats aren't showing?

laura k said...

When we were kids, animals all had animal-y names. These days it seems like most people give their animals regular names. When we go to the dog park, most of the dogs are named Ben, Sam, Tommy, Sarah, Cassie...

allan said...

how would harvey feel about calling them "2004" and "2007"?

laura k said...

On your daughter's Facebook page, maybe?

Or open a Flickr account, it's free and super easy to use.

Jere said...

ours are named after a metal singer and a minor character in an 80s movie

Patrick said...

I already take that back. But it looks like it was close some of the times. But in '83 it looks like Rice had better numbers...

laura k said...

ours are just their names. all our dogs just had their own names, except our first dog Gypsy was named for something I wrote. also she was a Gypsy.

Sarah Haendler said...

sarah, the bassoonist is a go

excellent news.

(sounds like some sort of code for something though.)

Amy said...

I don't mind human names for pets, but I just like their names to be about them, not about me (like my favorite author, ballplayer, band, etc.) That always requires explanation. We named our first cat Kahlua because I drank Black Russians back then, and it required way too much explanation. (She did not look like Kahlua!)

Jere said...

In '83, look at HR and avg alone and that might be good enough even if he wasn't a SS, which back then was not what it was today. Most SS's hit .220 with 2 dongs back then.

allan said...

looked at the clock ...

pretty sure it's rally time.

Amy said...

2004 and 2007---very catchy. :)

Of course, that was the problem with using Tek or any Red Sox name. I wouldn't want a cat named Jeter or ARod.

Jere said...

Cal's team finished first, Rice's didn't. That helped, too.

laura k said...

"(sounds like some sort of code for something though.)"

i thought the same thing!

bassoonist = dogsitter for newfoundland trip. yay!

Sarah Haendler said...

picasa is also very easy to use, amy.

Jere said...

Hinske knocks in a run, and it's 7-0 TB.

Don and Rem talking about stealing stuff from planes.

laura k said...

yes, i started out w/ picasa. i prefer flickr but both are easy and free.

show us kitten! we want kittens! :)

Jere said...

In case you were wondering, Remy really, really, really hated the Japan trip.

Patrick said...

Ok. Cool. His MVP in '91 looks more legit. They must give a lot of respect to good offense from the SS position. I think that especially looking how Jeter almost won in '06. It seems ridiculous to me looking back at the numbers.

Sarah Haendler said...

Well, this game's in the shitter, fer sure.

Amy said...

Here's the kittens

For those who want something to distract them from this miserable game.

Patrick said...

All we need is the grand salami. No prob.

laura k said...

sorry amy, that link doesn't work. :)

Amy said...

I realized I had them on Picasa---just never had posted a link that way before from Picasa, just emailed it. Had to go figure out the code again....

Patrick said...

That link is a tease!!!

Amy said...

Damn, I can never remember the way to do the link.

What were we keeping Timlin for??

Jere said...

Timlin's ERA is a perfect 10.00

Patrick said...

Oh boy. Load up the shot gun. Get the leash.

Jere said...

Cue somebody asking why there's a Red Sox ad behind the plate in the Metrodome...

Amy said...

Yeah, I think that was what I did.

Will try again

kittens

laura k said...

ococ! saving ole yeller for another day.

allan said...

DP!!!!!!!!!!

Patrick said...

looks like a cutie.

Amy said...

Remember when Jack said back in the Yankee series that Francona was going to give Timlin 5 more tries? Haven't we passed that yet?

Jere said...

Roundabout Ott

laura k said...

they are so adorable!! thanks for posting it.

Patrick said...

How do we plug this into the equation? Will this result in 5 more outings for Timlin? I think Timlin is with us for the year....

Sarah Haendler said...

Kitteh sez, "I can has runs?"

laura k said...

of course, calling kittens and puppies adorable is like saying water is wet or manny is great.

Amy said...

Thanks, and you're welcome.

That obviously is my daughter in the pictures---the younger one who is my fellow Sox fan (the older one barely knows there are nine innings in a baseball game).

Jere said...

two more runners needed

Amy said...

OK, we have to get base runners for runs. Good start. Will Cora replace Lugo?

Patrick said...

Cliff lee is ridiculous:

9.0 7 0 0 2 5 0.67

laura k said...

thanks patrick, i was going to post that but didn't have time (modding)

Jere said...

Amy said...

Base hit! Two on.

Jack Marshall said...

Amy: Cora will not replace Lugo. Count on it.

Red Sox anti-win

Amy said...

Ouch. We lose again. Damn. When did we last win? Why does it feel so long ago?

Sarah Haendler said...

Sounds like Dave. (I thought of you guys and our conversation last week while I was filling out emergency contact info today and listed him as my "partner".)

Jere said...

Yanks trail 7-1 bottom 8th

laura k said...

gee that was fun 'nt.

Sarah Haendler said...

Stupid clean water.

Amy said...

Why not, Jack? Money? He doesn't deserve it? Lugo is better?

laura k said...

couldn't have been that long away, we beat the tigers 3 out of 4, and we beat the twins once.

laura k said...

because jack said so, that's why not.

Jack Marshall said...

One of the rare no-breaks-would-have-changed-the-result
losses of the season.

Amy said...

Yes, and despite the fact that her parents and sister love baseball and that she married a crazy Mets fan, she still has NO interest in baseball. Sigh.

Amy said...

OK, it just feels bad after these two games.

Tomorrow is another day.

Jere said...

we won two nights ago

laura k said...

sarah, nice! :)

(did you feel all quasi pseudo and shit?)

(and where IS tim anyway?)

Sarah Haendler said...

That was a frustrating series. Let's go take it out on the O's.

Jack Marshall said...

Right L-girl, but more to the point 1) he's never been an every day player 2) he doesn't have Lugo's range or power 3) he always starts off hot and then doesn't hit for months 3) he's not as fast....
AND money, of course.
Lowrie's another story. If Lugo's looking over his shoulder, that's the direction.

Sarah Haendler said...

Not quasi- pseudo- in the slightest! Somewhat irritated at the lack of adequate vocabulary though. I still think there should be a not-husband word.

9casey said...

In all 3 loses we out hit them......HH may miss his next start, my opinion, I would expect to see Colon next time around.....

Power I have light bulbs with more power.....

Jere said...

Rays 3 outs away from being a half game out of first.

9casey said...

How is Julio Lugo, get so much blame for these loses......

We didn't pitch well....

Last time I checked thats pretty important.

laura k said...

I don't think anyone's blaming Lugo, Amy was just taken with Cora's performance today.

laura k said...

I think it's the perfect word - egalitarian, gender-netural, and to me it perfectly describes what it is, a partnership.

I guess you'll have to make up a new word. :)

Jack Marshall said...

9Casey: you're right, I think: Colon will take Clay's spot, and he'll go down to straighten himself out. And that's fine. He'll be great eventually. (And if I say so, you know it will be true, as Laura so sagely pointed out...)

9casey said...

L-girl said...

People did the same thing last year around this same time with Pedroia....How did that work itself out

Amy said...

I was impressed with Cora, and I haven't been impressed with Lugo in the field over two seasons.

I think the problem people have with "partner" is the business connotation. I like life partner, but it's not used much.

Jack Marshall said...

By the way---I love Cora, and almost perfect reserve...smart, great instincts, versatile, and can get some clutch hits. But being a regular isn't the best use of his talents.

I think Lugo gets too much heat, but he has lost the Sox three games this season with his glove, and that ain't good.

Amy said...

9Casey, I am not doing to Lugo what people did to Pedroia. First of all, Lugo has played a full season plus whereas Pedroia was a rookie with a month or so of experience at the time. Also, I am not writing off Lugo, just thinking we shouldn't rule out Cora.

Sarah Haendler said...

I suppose I shall! Until then, I'm sticking with partner. It works, it's accurate, I don't hate it. It just feels flat to me. I think the problem for me is that I want some of the weightiness with which our culture has imbued the words "husband" and "wife", even though I reject the words themselves.

9casey said...

I don't see HH being sent down, more as being Colon's caddy ..

Jack Marshall said...

Amy, I think you'll find that any team making a career-long over-30 reserve like Cora a regular (except in an injury emergency) is about as rare as a no-hitter, and any contending team doing it is as rare as a perfect game.
Which is why I said you could bet on it not happening with Cora on the Sox. I wasn't trying to be a wise-ass. Of course, I don't HAVE to try to be a wise-ass..

9casey said...

Amy said...
just thinking we shouldn't rule out Cora

Cora has a great glove. If tito can take out Manny for defense he sure as hell , in late innings , can take out Lugo.

Amy said...

Since I have used "husband" for almost 32 years, it works just fine for me. Sometimes I still sort of find it funny when I hear myself described as a wife though. Not offensive, just funny.

My wish:

What a beautiful day that would be.

Jack Marshall said...

Redsock: Boy, you and me both. My predicted scenario was Casey (Hansen) for Timlin, followed by Colon for Taveras. Since it ended up being Taveras first, I think the Colon for Timlin scenario is no worse than 50-50, with Buchholtz to the minors being the other option. But why not keep Buchholz in the long relief-spot starter role?

9casey said...

redsock said...
My wish:

If that happens , I would assume we would have the youngest bullpen in the history of baseball.....

Jack Marshall said...

9Casey: nothing wrong with that!

Amy said...

Jack and 9Casey, you make valid points. I am frustrated with Lugo, and I have been since last year. I am sure you are both right that Cora is not the answer. Maybe we can trade Coco for someone?

Rob said...

I just don't think you'll see Timlin be designated. I don't ever see the Red Sox doing that. The only chance you see Mike Timlin leave the team this year is if he gets traded. Or injured, of course. But that can happen to anybody.
