G52: Athletics 3, Red Sox 0

Red Sox - 000 000 000 - 0 1 0
Athletics - 010 000 11x - 3 9 0
Duchscherer was senational (8-1-0-0-4, 101) (again), retiring the first 15 Red Sox before plunking Jason Varitek to start the sixth.

Boston's lone hit was a clean line drive single to center from David Ortiz with one out in the seventh. Neither Varitek nor Ortiz advanced past first base.

Beckett (7-7-2-0-9, 107) had a rough first two innings, but settled down after that, at one point setting down 11 straight A's. MDC pitched a shaky eighth, giving up two singles, a walk, a stolen base, and a run on 22 pitches.

There was no need to rush this game along, as it was played in a tidy 2:17.

***

Josh Beckett (4.67, 93 ERA+) / Justin Duchscherer (2.67, 144 ERA+)

In four games against Boston, Frank Thomas is 7-for-16 with three homers and 10 RBI.

Also: Mariners/Yankees at 1 and Orioles/Rays at 6.

Crazy night. Four sporting events on at once. Now we're down to three. Celtics game, and the Sox. 2-0 doesn't feel too big of a defecit, but Duchscherer is so good that even a hit hasn't deterred him. He's really been phenomenal tonight.

In general that's true Jere, but when it's a massive presence of like 8,000 people, and they are starting chants and generally taking over, one's tribal instincts take over and look at that behavior as dickish and annoying

Joe Grav said...

3?
Celtics, Red Sox....

Patrick said...

Yikes....Heavily deuched.

Amy said...

OK, losing all steam here. I will leave it to you guys to be sure we score at least two runs next time up.

Patrick said...

Ish, how do you do it!

Jere said...

yeah but cheering for your team at a baseball game ("let's go Red Sox") is what you're supposed to do. But we really don't have to worry about what the home fans think when they're the minority, ha.

Amy said...

Ish got 201, so I am feeling safe about going to sleep!

Rob said...

Stanley Cup Finals. Red Wings beat the Penguins 3-0.

Two huge playoff games in Detroit area in one night. Oi.

Rob said...

Ish, how do you do it!

It's in my blood.

Joe Grav said...

The Stanley Cup game is over. You said there were 3 still going on

Joe Grav said...

Perhaps you were referring to the Revs as #4, but I doubt it

Revs won, btw

But I wanted Pittsburgh to win the hockey game

Rob said...

The Stanley Cup game is over. You said there were 3 still going on

Yep. I did.

I meant two.

Rob said...

But I wanted Pittsburgh to win the hockey game

Me too.

My mother likes auto racing, so we were watching a race tonight as well.

Joe Grav said...

Uh, oh, the basket-balls appears to not be over

Jere said...

That's cuz he wrote the post an hour ago when some unknown fourth game was going on and he sat there waiting for 201 to paste and post, ha

It's true. That's how I roll.

Patrick said...

AHHHH! Celts lead down to 9....

Joe Grav said...

ish really does have uncanny 201ability

Rob said...

Maybe I should have said 3 sporting events, and 1 motorsport event.

Rob said...

I reloaded the thread and it was at 197. So I typed my message, which took a little less than a minute. To my surprise it showed up at 201.

Jere said...

celts: up 11, down 2, up 24, up 9

Joe Grav said...

Well, I knew the Nationwide Series race was going on, I just didn't think anyone was watching it. I like racing and even I didn't care to put it on at all.

Rob said...

Don't Colon and Manny look like brothers?

allan said...

quit dicking around, mdc

street up now.

Joe Grav said...

Not looking good. again.

Benjamin said...

Oh well.

Well, I knew the Nationwide Series race was going on, I just didn't think anyone was watching it. I like racing and even I didn't care to put it on at all.

Yeah. The race started at 7:30, then hockey at 8, basketball at 8:30, and baseball at 9.

Patrick said...

I don't like playing in Oakland.

Rob said...

Yeah. 9 points with 2:30 to play... anything can happen.

I wish the Red Sox game was as interesting tonight.

Joe Grav said...

Maybe we'll make teh comeback

Rob said...

I think, aside from Ducky's no-hit bid, Ellsbury's diving non-catch way over in foul territory early in the game, and then a couple of pitches later, an actual diving/sliding catch.

Joe Grav said...

c's looking better

allan said...

i dunno - this game is in teh crapper (he said without a knowing wink)

Rob said...

MDC's not making a comeback look easy. 3 runs is not insurmountable. 6...pretty much is.

Rob said...

i dunno - this game is in teh crapper (he said without a knowing wink)

Certainly feels that way. Falls under the Loss column for the season (as opposed to the Win column, and the Other column.)

allan said...

we've slapped street around before.

Joe Grav said...

Celtics win

Comeback thyme

Rob said...

Celtics are finally going to win a road game, it appears. It's about time.

Joe Grav said...

Shootout Loss ish

Rob said...

we've slapped street around before.

It's true. Only 3 runs are needed to even this sucker up. We'll see.

So far I'm 1 for 2 on the night. Penguins lost, Celtics..............win! etc etc etc.

Now, RUNS.

allan said...

if cora can get on, then we got some real hitters coming up.

Jere said...

On David Aardsma's redsox.com page, who's that guy on the right?

Rob said...

Shootout Loss ish

What was the shootout loss?

allan said...

fuck you cora - you couldn't hit that with a fucking oar.

Rob said...

Jere, I think that's Matt Herges.

Joe Grav said...

undefeated Trinity College leads Linfield College 4-2 in the 4th at the D3 world series.

Jere said...

"Jere, I think that's Matt Herges."

Okay, it all makes sense then...

Wow, the guy's head ended up hovering over the dugout step.

allan said...

now that's a dive.

Joe Grav said...

I know this because future
~NORTH SHORE NAVIGATOR~
Kent Graham hit a 2 run homer as part of Trinity's 3 run first

Jere said...

that little "my country tis of thee" girl can't sing for shit

allan said...

i don't think lyndon's rubdown is gonna cheer up andy tonight.

Rob said...

Well then. 41 miles of bike riding, 3 sporting events (+1 motorsport), a couple of slices of pizza and an upset stomach, and this day is over.

Talk to you all again tomorrow, when the Red Sox play when the sun is out.

summary: i've had more enjoyment watching baseball games other than this one.

summary: i've had more enjoyment watching baseball games other than this one.

This game made NASCAR seem relevant, and interesting.

allan said...

Devil Rays only .5 GB now.

LPY still LPY, though.

Jack Marshall said...

I know it's a moot point, but if anyone has a logical excuse for not pinch-hitting for Cora, I'd love to hear it. You need runners. If Casey more likely to get on than Einstein? Yes, clearly. Is Lugo? Yes. In Manny? Of course. It's stupid, that's all. But it's typical Francona in that situation. (Jimy Willimas was the same way.)

SoSock said...

No comeback last night, eh?
Found my head falling into my keyboard about 11. Might have had something to do with getting up at 5:30 and going to work at the LL field. And then there's the 5 Coronas after that. :) I'm sure they played their part.
Anyway, got to sleep in this morning. Only have 1 field to drag and line so I'm heading to the bagel shop and will hit the field around 10.
Hollyhocks to plant and weeds to deal with after, but hopefully I'll have Cat's garden work done in time to see most of the game today.

Amy said...

Joe Grav, Not sure if you will read this, but Kent Graham is from my town (Longmeadow) and is the son of people we know as well as the classmate of other kids we know well. Another Trinity player, Jon Rapaport, is also from Longmeadow.
