G60: Orioles 6, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 000 001 110 - 3 10 0
Orioles - 000 200 04x - 6 9 0
Boston rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the eighth, but they blew a chance to add to that slim advantage when Alex Cora grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Hideki Okajima relieved Wakefield (7-5-2-4-3, 109) in the bottom of the inning. He struggled from his first pitch, allowing three straight singles. He got two outs on a sac fly (which tied the game 3-3) and a force play. But he walked Ramon Hernandez to reload the bases. Jeemer then fell behind Adam Jones 3-1 and came in with a fat fastball -- that Jones drilled to deep left for a three-run double.

Down to their last out in the ninth against George Sherrill, Julio Lugo and Kevin Youkilis both walked to bring up Manny as the potential tying run. Ramirez had hit home run #502 in the sixth, but this time, he lifted a routine fly to Nick Markakis in right-center.

***

Tim Wakefield (4.70, 91 ERA+) / Jeremy Guthrie (3.64, 115 ERA+)

This is Wakefield's third start of this 10-game road trip. ... After a dismal 1-5 start, the possibility of finishing up 5-5 is pretty attractive.

More on MBM from Tomase and Bradford.

Baltimore has scored a total of eight runs in Guthrie's six losses.

Tampa is off tonight before starting a three-game series at Fenway tomorrow. The Yankees are still in Minnesota (7 PM).

But the Twins take the lead in bottom 8.

Phil was chopping up some tofu when Manny hit # 500.

I guess I don't see it as sides in any way. Just personal freedom. I know to you it's a bigger issue, but for me it's freedom from other people's dogmas.

Plus Amy didn't make fun of tofu.

Joe Grav said...

6-5 twins. the only bit of good news.

Benjamin said...

Jere: scroll down.

Oki tripled his ERA that inning and it isn't even over yet.

Amy said...

Ish, what a cutie!

Here are some newer ones of ours. Be sure to see the ones with the kittens trying to nurse on our poor sweet dog.

laura k said...

ish = 401

Jack Marshall said...

Oh, I see. AFTER the bases clearing double it's clear to Francona that Okajima doesn't have it tonight. Silly me: I thought it was obvious four batters ago.

By the way, Jim Palmer actually pronounces in Papel-BOM.

Just like my mother.

Rob said...

And now my internets are choppy.

laura k said...

Amy, thanks for those photos, they're great. I'm going to save the link to look at later. Poor Cassie! She's so sweet.

nixon33 said...

fuck me.

Jere said...

Yanks put Joba in rotation, Mop comes in in his role and gives up go ahead run. And tomorrow, maybe he'll blow Joba's start, too!

Amy said...

Cassie adores her little kittens. She bathes them, lets them chase her tail and "nurse" on her. She would have been a wonderful mom dog.

I love Nixon's angry language. Always so expressive. Lots of expletives not deleted like the other Nixon.

Jack Marshall said...

I can't concentrate on the game. I'm thinking about ligaments.

GUMBALL RALLY TIME

Joe Grav said...

This is the first agme in a while that feels unjustly ripped from the win column.

andy said...

I will cut okibot off in a second if keeps that shit up.

nixon33 said...

Can someone please give me a serious explanation why in the world tito would leave in Oki, especially after we got mora out at third, never mind after he walked the bases loaded?

WHY? i seriously cannot believe it.

laura k said...

That's so sweet (Cassie). Cody loves little animals too. She would love to have a kitten, I think.

But I'm allergic. And Tala would kill it!

Damn this game. Not a sweep after all I guess.

Jere said...

Bailey pinch hitting for Jennifer there.

Amy said...

Got me on the Oki failure to act by Tito. I usually defend him, but this one was inexplicable.

laura k said...

Yeah, it's the first game I can think of like that too. Although I'm sure there are other losses ppl blamed on Tito, this is the only one I can think of this year.

Amy said...

I remember Cody chasing after James' puppy!

nixon33 said...

yeah, i love tito so much, but jesus christ....

Rob said...

Well, he's your set up man. You stick with him.

Apparently.

Joe Grav said...

Amy said...

If I were Wake, I'd really be pissed at Francona. This game should have been won.

Joe Grav said...

one part accomplished. let's go yookerlis.

Jere said...

bases loaded in the 8th, 1 out, 1-run lead, we shoulda pulled away then

allan said...

you are going down.

let's do it yook.

nixon33 said...

sometimes lugo looks like he's running in heels...

Amy said...

Remy buying into Allan's plan.

Rob said...

I'm sure if you're in Wake's shoes, though, it'd be hard to be angry at your manager who's stuck with you through thick and thin, and led you to two world series titles, yadda yadda yadda.

Joe Grav said...

that was ball friggin 3.

Benjamin said...

Wake's never been angry at a soul, unless it was a deer's.

Joe Grav said...

miss with this pitch. miss, miss miss your location. low and away. in the dirt.

Joe Grav said...

do it again. do it again. walk him.

Rob said...

Either way, Youk's really grinding out this AB.

Jere said...

Grant Salzano said...

I TOTALLY DID NOT KNOW MANNY WAS ON DECK

allan said...

get it over with sherrill, you know you're gonna lose.

quicker = less pain.

Rob said...

Manny gets a shot! At least they didn't just quietly go down in the 9th. Manny's got a chance for a moon shot to tie this one.

Joe Grav said...

they're probably gonna end up walking him.

Amy said...

Part 2 of the Allan/Remy plan.

Now, for part 3, it's up to our new DH.

Joe Grav said...

fuck. that was a ball.

Rob said...

they're probably gonna end up walking him.

Or keep busting him down and in...

i'll be in the north shore navigators' office, doing nothing until the team practices at 6.

sure! why not?

(with the sox/rays, it'll be a doubleheader, i guess.)

L says the whole thing will be on live line. She/I'll post the link tomorrow.

We're almost certain it will pass -- so it will be a huge, historic decision.

Joe Grav said...

Awesome. I'll talk to you tomorrow, then.

Globe:

BALTIMORE - David Ortiz is heading to the DL and will likely be out for at least a month.

The Sox DH had an MRI at Mass General earlier today and it was learned he had an extensor carpi ulnaris partially torn sheath of his left wrist which is basically what holds the tendon in place according to what Terry Francona told the media after the game.

The tendon itself is not torn.

Francona said that no surgery was needed.

Team sources also indicated Ortiz will be in a hard cast and immobilized for two weeks. It will take another 10 days to two weeks to likely begin swinging the bat and getting back into playing condition. The injury is not considered common.

Because it's Ortiz' top hand, it's considered an important injury.

Francona had no idea how he would replace Ortiz, but mentioned the possibility of Sean Casey playing more as well as a speedy outfield of Jacoby Ellsbury, Coco Crisp and J.D. Drew as well as Manny Ramirez DHing.

Rob said...

Torn sheaths that hold tendons in place. Reminds me of a certain bloody sock.

Hope Manny gets to play LF once in awhile so he doesn't forget how...

I wonder if this is a good enough time for the Red Sox to do some shopping for a short-term replacement. If so, who'd be available, and more specific - who'd be the most likely candidate?

Spencer Brown said...

I think I scared off Spencer Brown. If I did, I apologize.

no Laura you did not scare me off! I had to run to an appointment after posting is all.

and it's probably me that needs to apologize for the "many here are anti religious" remark.

It seems everyone actually agrees with me.

Patrick said...

I wonder who we bring up with Ortiz on the DL.

Personally I would love to see a lot more Brandon Moss on our roster. That kid is a beast and has the gift of late inning magic that is always precious.

Really sucky to see Ortiz go. Really sucky. He's our big papi. :( :( :(

I was glued to the TV for the last four periods of the game. What an incredible game. Pittsburgh was down 3-2 with their goalie pulled, and scored with about 45 seconds left in the 3rd period, and they end up duking it out going back and forth, up and down the ice for multiple overtimes.

Sokoya, the guy who scored for Pittsburgh, said he'd be the one to score (he told an NBC sideline ice guy person that he would)

I was hoping it'd end sooner rather than later because I was nodding off here and there. What a game. Detroit took twice as many shots on goal as Pittsburgh, yet, it was Pittsburgh who ended up with 4 goals, and Detroit 3.

Sportscenter told me that Manny is the first player ever (out of 24, of course) to hit home runs #500, #501, and #502 in consecutive games.
