G73: Phillies 8, Red Sox 2

Red Sox - 000 020 000 - 2 8 0
Phillies - 301 004 00x - 8 12 0
Colon (4-6-4-2-4, 70) had a rough start: ten pitches in, he was down 3-0, thanks to a Rollins dinger, Victorino's double and Howard's two-run dong.

Howard led off the third with another shot to deep left and Boston trailed 4-0. The Red Sox got two back in the fifth on back-to-back taters from Pedroia (who also singled and doubled) and Drew, but then Francona decided bringing Timlin in for the sixth inning would be a good idea.

He was wrong. Walk, single, sacrifice, single, single, fielder's choice, triple, walk. Four runs off Old Yeller allowed the Phillies to put the game on cruise control.

There was good news: Ortiz's cast is off and he may start range of motion exercises on Tuesday.

***

Bartolo Colon (3.41, 128 ERA+) / Cole Hamels (3.27, 134 ERA+)

The Phillies (41-30) lead the NL East by 3 games. Chase Utley (.309/.401/.636, 22 HR, 61 RBI, 163 OPS+) and Pat Burrell (.283/.425/.602, 162 OPS+) are the big bats and Hamels is the ace of the staff.

By comparison, J.D. Drew's OPS+ is 164 (.321/.428/.577), followed by Manny Ramirez (146) and Kevin Youkilis (138).

The rest of the AL East is off today, but there was some Yankees news:

funny, my Nixon Sox shirt was the black kind.

So yeah, pitchers getting injured on the basepaths, everybody laughing as a batter swings and his helmet falls off cuz he doesn't know how to hit...all things that could be easily avoided by ending the "experiment."

JD Dong > Heidi

For sure.

I feel a little conflicted about leaving our cat for weekends and long weekends. She's a very interactive creature and definitely starts to get anxious when the suitcases come out. And she does act slightly weird when for a few hours when we do come back.

But the alternative is usually that she gets boarded in a little cage. Isn't it better for her to have the run of her domain, even if we're not around? My wife tends to think she mopes the whole time we're away. I'm more along your line of thinking, Amy. She's just doing her regular napping, patrolling, meeping at birds outside the windows.

laura k said...

When we had dogs with separation anxiety, I learned how to give a treat, give a head pat and walk confidently out the door without making a fuss. It's really important for them. And it helped me too! So now I'm ok with it.

Damn, where is he going?! To third.

laura k said...

I always feel the dogs are better off in their own environment. We always have someone stay over with them.

Patrick said...

When I or my mom work with our horses and my dog sees it, she flips out! She gets all yappy and jealous.

Gee-off down by way of the K.

Why didnt Ellsbury know that was over his head and could have possibly gone off wall if not over it? Does he never play around a big green wall?

laura k said...

Zen, I vote for your version, cat doing her thing while you're gone. She knows you're coming back.

Amy said...

Zen, we always have left our cats home. And yes, they can act pissy when we get home. We had one cat when I was a kid who would tear threw an entire role of toilet paper when we went away. But I agree that they are happier in their familiar environment, as long as they get fresh water, food and litter every day.

Amy said...

I HEARD Heidi!!

laura k said...

We were once gone for a month, someone stayed with our dogs. Our big Shepherd mix went nuts when we came home - crying, trembling - it was horrible.

[AMY: HEIDI]

I think while we were gone she gave up on us, thought we were gone forever. Then was all confused when we returned.

I realized it had been too long for her. I felt awful.

Rob said...

That's the thing I get worried about with my cat. Like to see him get fresh water every day if we're gone. And if we do go, we're gone for a week or so.

Amy said...

We also leave our dog home now. We used to use boarders until we found a good sitter who would come in several times a day. I would prefer to have someone stay in the house, but that has proven almost impossible. But I still figure better to sleep alone in the house than alone in a kennel cage.

Rob said...

Remy thinks Colon got hurt on one of the swings. Could've tweaked his back, maybe

Big thunderstorm coming toward Philly. Not raining or lightning-ing yet. But there usually are big gusts before the storm. They've been talking about that today.

laura k said...

That I couldn't do. Someone has to be here at night, or else I would board them. There are really nice places that are more like camps than kennels - no cages, big enclosures. Or you can board them at someone's home, a lot of people take in dogs.

Obviously it must be fine or you wouldn't do it. I just would be too nervous.

nick said...

I also second peppermint stick ice cream. or straight up peppermint. or malted vanilla w/ chocolate chunks smushed in (not the same since Herrell's got rid of the bittersweet chunks).

Amy said...

We had to board Cassie (with the afore-mentioned trainer) about a month after we got her for about three weeks. (We had found her at the shelter and had to take her then, but had a previously planned vacation coming up.) I was sure she would never remember us when we got back. She not only remembered us, but she was so happy. And better trained, to boot!

laura k said...

Not Heidi, Gypsy! The great and wonderful Gypsy. Our first dog.

Uh-oh, getting teary eyed...

Patrick said...

If I eat ice cream it has to be some variation of chocolate. It's too good a chance to eat chocolate to pass up.

Amy said...

Yeah, we have had no problems. But Cassie and her predecessor were both very, very calm dogs, so they were no problem.

Herrell's, Nick---which one? Northampton??

laura k said...

That's a good story re Cassie. :)

We had to wait to pick up Tala b/c we were moving and also had a short trip planned. She was staying with a trainer who we hated and we thought was abusive! So we couldn't wait to get her.

We had to rescue her from the rescuers!

laura k said...

what a drag. now you can eat ice cream but not chocolate?

Rob said...

I thought about counting the ice cream places on my little road trip on Saturday, but I lost count.

Amy said...

Did you get to Herrell's when your nephew lived in Noho, Laura?

Still waiting for Nick's response.

Herrell's: founded by Steve Herrell, whose first store was in Somerville, where I spent every Friday night waiting on line for chocolate with Heathbars mixed in. Back in 1975. Steve sold it to the guy who started Bertucci's. Then started Herrell's. More to this story, but does anyone but me care?

laura k said...

patrick, i was going to do the same thing!!

Rob said...

interesting it'd be chocolate that would aggravate acid reflux.

laura k said...

No. I'm not a big ice cream eater. I like it once in a while when I'm in the mood, but don't go out of way for it.

Amy said...

I have a hard time with chocolate. I will eat a little (like tonight with vanilla swirled in). But a really rich chocolate would make me very uncomfortable. :( Acid reflux sucks.

Rob said...

I'm not a big fan of chocolate myself. Only in small doses.

laura k said...

Oh shit Amy, that "no" was not in reply to "does anyone but me care".

It was to "did you go to Herrell's...".

To give you idea of the people that you might find in Kingston, NH: My sister and I went to a bar in town a couple days ago.
People were singing kareoke and one gentleman sang The Rodeo Song.

It was a bar favorite, and the word 'Goon' in the song ended with a k and not an n. Pretty bad.

Amy said...

Yeah, chocolate is one of the things on that list of things not to eat/drink, along with coffee, caffeine, alcohol, and soda. I gave up all but one. Guess which one?

Shit, who the hell put Timlin into this game??

allan said...

i am not a mike timlin fan.

sadly, terry francona is.

Amy said...

Haha, Laura, I read it the way you meant it! (But it's okay if no one cared about my Herrell's story!)

allan said...

nixon33 said...

could timlin be any worse, COULD HE??????

Amy said...

Jesus, what the fuck? We get within two, and Francona acts like we already lost the game, bringing in Timlin.

Jere, you STILL have faith in this guy?

laura k said...

I have to leave the thread soon and go collapse. Very little sleep last night, and an early flight tomorrow.

This might be our last game for a while. Tomorrow I hope to do a pub crawl in St. John's. People tell us we might find a bar with the Sox game on.

nixon33 said...

crap. I went to the kitchen to reheat leftovers and took a phone call. I come back to find out we're down by 2, scratch that, 3 runs. and fuck. fuck.

Amy said...

Nixon, great minds think alike.

Laura, have a good night's sleep, a safe flight, and a wonderful trip.

I wish I had an excuse not to watch any more of this game. I may just go read anyway.

TIMLIN SHOULD BE RELEASED.

andy said...

Look what this fuck did to my lover boy. He could have hurt himself.

laura k said...

Amy, good choice. I can't imagine having to give up caffeine or alcohol. I've quit caffeine many times, but never for long. It's a very intense addiction.

andy said...

andy said...

Amy said...

Why are we all so smart and Francona so STUPID? Do they sleep with each other or something?

andy said...

Fastball isn't working so lets walk people.

laura k said...

ice cream >>>>>> this score.

Yep, Amy, in Northampton. I went to high school there so I had the pleasure of the Herrell's. When I visit, I like to go there on occasion. Bart's is good, but just not as... for me. When I was small there was a place in Amherst called Just Desserts that I enjoyed.

Here in the Berkshires, we had Berkshire Ice Cream which used to be fabulous and now is just great. Their Ginger ice cream is so good.

Amy said...

A pitching change NOW? I say let TImlin stay in, kill his arm, and then we will not have to watch him any more.

Hey, Nick, which Herrell's do you go to? (trying to think about something good to cheer me up)

thatdietcokegirl said...

here's my creative writing story using three word sentences:

i hate mike timlin. i hate mike timlin. i hate mike timlin. release him now. he's too old. he can't pitch. francona is mental. what the fuck.

Rob said...

This move should have been switched. Aardsma has been a better pitcher than Timlin. If he allows 4 runs, then yes, bring in Timlin.

nixon33 said...

i dont know what to say....

Nick, you get any good thunderstorms this afternoon? Amy, you?

nick said...

Which Herrell's? These days I don't know where they are. The one in Northampton that's in the basement of Thorne's Market.

Did the Bart's in Noho close?

andy said...

Does your pee smell bad after you eat asparagus?

Amy said...

Nick, you and I keep missing each other's posts! Yes, there is still just one Herrell's in Noho, in Thornes. And yes, Bart's closed (see post above). Not sure about Just Desserts, but I can check it out when we are back in western MA. Where in Amherst was it located?

Joe Grav said...

ughhhhhhhhhhhh

andy said...

Does theo have a say in timlin's future? Does he think timlin is good or worth keeping. I would rather watch some new kid get spanked then an old guy. at least you have a fall back when its a rookie. with a guy who has sucked for a while now it's hard to justify his continuing sucktitude.

Amy said...

No rain here at all today, except a minute of sprinkles. Sun and clouds alternating. It looked like it would pour several times, but never did. (We are on the Cape, not in western MA.)

nick said...

Whoops! yep. back and forth.

Just Desserts is definitely gone. It was there in, oh, 1980, but gone by the time I cam back for high school. It was in that building that Bart's is in in Amherst next to the Unitarian Church, but a store front or two back.

On the ice cream tip, Haagen-daaz is pretty much the only place to find rum raisin these days.

nick said...

We had a decent storm this afternoon when I was getting ready to leave work. Not as bad as expected but nice. No hail, but lovely swirling textured clouds before the water came down. Nice lightning lines as well.

out there?

Joe Grav said...

it's beginning to Lightning out.

Rob said...

Speaking of local places to eat... There's a bagel shop in a Price Chopper grocery store (and I'm not sure if all of them have one) in Keene, NH, which have the freshest bagels I've had. They constantly make them throughout the day. The best one I had was a cheddar cheese bagel. Cheddar cheese! The good thing was the cheddar wasn't strong at all. In fact, it kept the bagel very soft.

Amy said...

Ish, it's functional, but not the most eye-catching blog title. Isn't someone here in marketing or something? How about Foto Games?

Joe Grav said...

How big is Keene? I'm gonna be in Keene on Thursday for a ballgame. I like bagels.

Rob said...

None here. We've been in the clouds all day. Got that marine layer going. That's kryptonite for thunderstorms. I'd really, really love to be in Boston, at night, during a good lightning storm with my camera. That would be quite the amazing night.

Amy said...

Uhoh, bagel talk. As a former NYer, I have never found a New England bagel that is as good as almost any bagel in NY. Some have come close, but most are soft, textureless imitations of a bagel.

Cheddar cheese bagels? Blasphemy! :)

Rob said...

How big is Keene? I'm gonna be in Keene on Thursday for a ballgame. I like bagels.

Keene's pretty small. College town. Nice city center that was recently renovated. Right downtown there's a nice mexican take-out place called Armadillo's Burritos. On the western outskirts of town, there is a large shopping center that's got a Border's, Target, and a few other big box stores. That's where Price Chopper is.

Rob said...

I agree with you Amy, on the bagels. The best bagel I can find around here is from Panera Bread - asiago cheese. Most of the other bagel shops are all the same.

Patrick said...

Keene state is a wild college. I've been to some crazy parties there.

nick said...

Amy, I'm not going to say there are bagels in NE better than NY because no matter how true it is or isn't, it's an argument that can't be won, but....

Here in Great Barrington, we have a bagel shop with some quite nice bagels. I worked there for 3 years awhile back...we'd often have weekenders bring bagels back to the city.

allan said...
