G89: Red Sox 6, Yankees 4

Red Sox - 003 030 000 - 6 12 0
Yankees - 300 000 001 - 4 6 1
Mike Lowell's three-run home run in the fifth broke a 3-3 tie and carried the Red Sox through a 88-minute rain delay and a win in the second game of the MFY series. The first trio of Boston runs scored in the third on Lowell's sac fly and Kevin Youkilis's triple.

You must see highlights of Yook's triple (here). It was hit to deep left and Johnny Damon raced back. He leapt at the wall, had the ball hit in and then pop out of his glove. As Damon fell to the warning track, the ball bounced a couple of times on the top of the outfield fence, and stayed balanced on top before falling and rolling several feet away from Damon. Game pictures here (and here), including this one:

The bullpen snuffed out two rallies. In the seventh, Hideki Ojakima left the bases loaded with two outs for Manny Delcarmen, who got Alex Rodriguez to hit into a force play. Then, in the eighth, after MDC walked Jason Giambi and retired Jorge Posada on a fly out, Javier Lopez came in and ended the inning with one pitch -- a double play grounder from (Whatta ya know!) Robbie Cano.

Beckett (6-4-3-2-4, 102) had a rough first inning -- two doubles and a walk among the first four batters -- but settled down, retiring the side in the second and third on 20 total pitches. A fantastic running-and-sliding catch into foul territory from Jacoby Ellsbury saved Beckett's bacon in the fourth, when he left the bases loaded.

In the two games of the series, New York is 2-for-24 with runners on base. It should be 1-for-23, but Derek Jeter was credited with a double although his fly ball to left-center was clearly caught by Coco Crisp. That should have ended the game, but it brought Bobby Abreu to the plate as the potential tying run.

Abreu flew to deep center (truping however many Yankee fans remained) to end the game (again). Give Jonathan Papelbon an asterik for a one-inning, five-out save. He had struck out Brett Gardner -- the batter before Jeter -- for what should have been the third out, but Gardner was awarded a walk instead.

Is the rain delay over? I got sick of the rain delay filler and turned off the TV.

Laura, I just posted on WMTC that I misread the post as a decision of a US court, which I now realize makes no sense. Why would a US citizen seek asylum in the US?? Oops!

allan said...

Safe to say MDC isn't coming back after this rain delay?

Quite safe.

O. Yeller, maybe?

Amy: You must see highlights of Yook's triple in the 3rd. High comedy featuring Damon!!

laura k said...

i keep coming back to see if the game is on, and they're still showing nesn's greatest hits. i wish someone could call me when they resume play, so i could get stuff done.

Joe Grav said...

Fuck, I thought we were gonna get away with this one the cheap way

Supposed to restart at 5:45, supposedly.

laura k said...

Patrick said...

allan said...

crap, man, the guy got hurt. What is your problem?

Heh heh, that's pretty funny. ... Wait ... are you serious?

nixon33 said...

its chocolate raining in the bronx

Amy said...

Laura, obviously you and I were thinking alike (big shock). We need an alert system for when the game is back on... IS IT ON??

andy said...

Are all the teams hats that blue color?

allan said...

IT IS ON!

Amy said...

I see baseball!

Patrick said...

The Damon play was ridiculous. You'll never see something like that ever again.

Amy said...

Pretty empty at Yankee Stadium. Only Sox fans left?

Patrick said...

Oh, it is Chocolate Rain...no worthless.

Benjamin said...

Hilarious.

Amy said...

Slowgo.

laura k said...

Yay, baseball! (Yes Amy, no shock there. :) )

From the sound of Lugo getting thrown out, I'd say there are a few NYY fans left.

nixon33 said...

thats a great shot phil.
fucking lugo...

Patrick said...

Lugo need to add some intangible qualities to this team, because he's not adding anything else.

allan said...

The look on the Sox fan on the end!!!

Amy said...

I like the looks on the faces of the Sox fans in that Damon photo. Classic.

Patrick said...

The face on the guy with the sox jersey in Phil's pic sums it up.

laura k said...

crap, man, the guy got hurt. What is your problem?

Let's see. Red Sox, Yankees, Damon, the ball stays on the wall, Damon's feet go flying in the air - and he walked off the field, wasn't carried off in a stretcher.

What is your problem, indeed. The only thing funnier might be Pedro's Zimmer take-down.

laura k said...

OMG, that pic is hilarious!!!!

nixon33 said...

i hope our bullshit-pen is up to task.

Amy said...

Hahaha, I love that we all made those comments about those faces!

nixon33 said...

is it going to be ahhhhdsmer?

allan said...

MDC in - and cora for lugo

Amy said...

I hope those Sox fans were razzing Damon before and after that play.

allan said...

Plus it happened at YS -- extra fun! And 2 runs scored on the play! And we won the game!

laura k said...

I think you can bet on that.

Patrick said...

The article about Tim Lincecum in the new SI is very good.

nixon33 said...

come on MDC no walks

Amy said...

Shit, MDC must be thrown by the delay. NO more baserunners, please.

laura k said...

Plus it happened at YS -- extra fun! And 2 runs scored on the play! And we won the game!

Oh yeah, I forgot all that! So many reasons to laugh.

allan said...

Lopez up -- coming in for Cano & Milk Dud?

allan said...

Not a fan of bringing MDC back out. Quite surprised by it.

Amy said...

SHIT. Time to get him out of there.

nixon33 said...

if lopez get cano, pap for 4 out save?

Patrick said...

Who was thrown complete games for us this year besides Lester? I don't remember but I think Joe mentioned two other have...

allan said...

Damon: x-rays were negative.

Noodle got a boo-boo!

Oh, horrors!

allan said...

Amy said...

Ninth inning, finally.

allan said...

A 10-spot here would be nice.

Amy said...

Oh, damn, that was CLOSE!

nixon33 said...

maybe i missed it, but what does FK stand for in FKR?

laura k said...

Oh damn, I got trooped.

It would be nice to get a bit more insurance.

Amy said...

Has Manny done anything today?

allan said...

maybe i missed it, but what does FK stand for in FKR?

FucKin'

andy said...

what demon got was an embarrassment sore not an actual injury

nixon33 said...

ha, i figured fuck was in there somewhere.
thanks

Patrick said...

Manny walked twice and got a base hit.

I think he got a run as well.

laura k said...

Has Manny done anything today?

Murdered a few puppies, joined the Communist party and let his grow even longer.

Just ask Michael Kay.

Amy said...

LOL re Michael Kay and Manny!

Jere said...

i've been getting bits/pieces of this game. So funny I actually get to see the end at home.

Amy said...

Thanks, Patrick, for the real answer.

nixon33 said...

unfortunately, C-Rain looks pretty good this year...so far.

Patrick said...

contusion, sprain in left AC joint in Damon's shoulder.

he's day-to-day, but the doctor gave him a lollipop. Cherry.

allan said...

Bot gettin' ready.

nixon33 said...

bot hasnt pitched in like 4 or 5 days right?

Patrick said...

Yeah, Bot might be crazy (more than usual, that is)

allan said...

Not since June 27.

BR is your friend!

Amy said...

Three outs to go. Come on, Bot, make fast work of it so I can see the end of the game before the family interrupts!

Amy said...

Who needs baseball reference when we have Redsock?

andy said...

You know I was thinking. Why did nobody think that baseball should be on national tv on 4th of july? They had competitive eating on ESPN during the first hour of the game. Why don't they show more national broadcast games?

allan said...

Milk Dud
One of the Flying Molina Brothers
Brett Gardner

And if it gets that far ... Mr. 27.

seriously!

allan said...

Who needs baseball reference when we have Redsock?

hhmmmhmhmhm (/margesimpsontypegrumble)

Jere said...

wow, NESN gives the wrong score. They mess up a lot, but usually the score of the current game is right...

laura k said...

Sorry Amy, I didn't know the real answer and I figured someone else would pick it up for you. :)

I've been alternating btn the gamethread and posting about the resister decision.

Amy said...

Oh, yeah, I forgot you are grouchy....

But you are SO good at finding that stuff, whereas most of us find BR overwhelming (or at least I do).

allan said...

They had competitive eating on ESPN during the first hour of the game.

Was Colon there?

If so, there's your Red Sox content!

Amy said...

No need to apologize! I loved your answer.

laura k said...

Who needs baseball reference when we have Redsock?

hhmmmhmhmhm (/margesimpsontypegrumble)

Now you know how I feel when people email me immigration questions that they could easily look up on the CIC website.

Note to world: do your own homework!

(PS I always answer non-look-up-able questions.)

Jere said...

if BR is overwhelming, try retrosheet

allan said...

Bot Note: His mouth is less like a Cherrio and more like a guy making heavy metal faces.

Amy said...

Love the Bot face.

Jere said...

although "the sheet" only goes up to the previous year.

allan said...

That reminds me to check out the new Retrosheet.

Jere said...

yeah the new retrosheet: for any other site, it's just very plain. but for them, it's like, Whoa! Extreme!

Amy said...

OK, at least Tek can still catch those pop ups.

laura k said...

Allan, maybe you can do a post that's a BR tutorial, showing people the best way to use it.

Or not.

andy said...

Bot face is extreme today.

allan said...

Anyone want a piece of Betemit gum?

andy said...

Tek makes his contribution.

nixon33 said...

wilson beat-the-meat, i hate this guy.

Amy said...

One more to go!

allan said...

Tek makes his contribution.

He does the little things.

Jere said...

Wilson "To Serve Man" Betemit.

laura k said...

I think I'm going to tempt the baseball gods that don't exist by thinking about a sweep.

allan said...

Dear Joe Girardi:

It might be time to call another team meeting!!! Hhahahahahaah!!!

Love,

Red Sox

laura k said...

IT'S A COOKBOOK!!

Amy said...

A strikeout would be sweet here.

Jere said...

Wilson Kanamit is cooked.

(That episode was on this morning.)

Amy said...

Full count? That looked like a strike to me!

Jere said...

Jeter up--perrrfect.

nixon33 said...

ugh, come on get this over already.

allan said...

rule book calls that one strike 5.

come ON!

Patrick said...

Come ahhhn Bot!

laura k said...

A walk! We're doomed, doooomed!! And it's all my fault because I thought about a sweep!!!

allan said...

Here he is, folks ... Mr. 27!!!

Patrick said...

I think it was bad timing on Giardi to bitch at his team after they got shut down by a good pitcher.

laura k said...

Ooo, fun!

Jere said...

Joba's gonna be doing some serious overthrowing on Sunday night if it's 3-0 in the series.

nixon33 said...

CHIN MUSIC, MOTHERFUCKER.

allan said...

up and in on 0-2. old fucking school!!!

Amy said...

DO IT!

allan said...

nixon33 said...

laura k said...

WTF??? Looked caught to me!!!

allan said...

Jere said...

laura k said...

Amy said...

That was a catch!

nixon33 said...

WTF!

Patrick said...

NOOOO! NOOO!SHENANIGANS! SHENANIGANS!!!!! GET THE BROOMS!

allan said...

Hey Umps:
You are allowed to call the GOD OF BASEBALL out sometimes.

laura k said...

Now BOT has to K this guy with a vengeance.

allan said...

unbelievable.

Jere said...

k his ass and let's go home

laura k said...

serious bullshit, and i almost never think that

nixon33 said...

i forgot that the rule books say that the yanks get and extra out.

Spencer Brown said...

that was an UNBELIEVABLY bad call. I could see it was a catch watching it in real time over the freakin INTERNET. What the hell is wrong with that ump?????? He should be fired.

Benjamin said...

Toilet water.

nixon33 said...

michael kay. douchebag.

Patrick said...

Why's the game over? Coco didn't catch that!

allan said...

IS THAT A CLEAN CATCH MOTHERFUCKER??????????????

HUH????????????????????

laura k said...

But a fly out to Ococ will work just as well. Plus it got NYY fans' hopes up, thinking it was a HR. Ha.

We win 2 in a row! Now for the Rays to lose.

Bye all! See you tomorrow.

Jere said...

that is absolutely beautiful. Because they got to think of their old mystique and aura days, thinking destiny was on their side, AND they probably thought that last ball was gone, but as usual in this millennium, the Yanks end up the losers and we end up the winners.

nixon33 said...

rs, why us jeter mr. 27?

Spencer Brown said...

Sweet karma that Coco makes the catch for the final out.

allan said...

I'm surprised. Joe West is not part of this umpiring crew.

Patrick said...

TFR are up 7-0 over TFR

allan said...

From SoSH. There was a stretch of about a week a couple of years ago when Jeter came up in the bottom of the 9th and 2 outs with chances to win the game and every single time he made the final out -- indeed, the 27th out of the game.

Jere said...

If the Rays win, the Yanks are 9 back. I'll take it. With a big smile.

nixon33 said...

ahhhh. thank you.
have a good fourth everyone and i'll see ya tomorrow!
moose huntin time

allan said...

My memory says he could have won three games with clutch hits, but CI not failed only each and every time, he ended the game.

allan said...

Looks like the O's will win, so both BAL and NYY will be 9 GB.

andy said...

coco should have handed the 3rd base ump the ball.

allan said...

Fucking Rays win 11-2.

Red Sox 3 GB
Orioles 9 GB
Yankees 9 GB
Blue Jays 12.5 GB (play tonight)

SoSock said...

Wow, I've been missing a lot of good shit.
BTW - Welcome back, missed you mean it, etc. etc., yada, yada
Hell of a play there by... well, not really BY anyone, just a hell of a play. I guess by the ball, actually. Watched the video several times.
And the catch by oCoC that was ruled wrong, that had to be the worst call I've seen in quite a while, including lots of bad ones made by volunteer umps at 9-10 yr. old All-Star games.
Our league is hosting the district 9-10 tournament again, so that's where I've been lately, around the clock. Started off with 28 teams from 6 or 7 counties, down to 4 now. Lots and lots of work every evening till late. It'll end Monday or Tuesday though.
My Jrs team (13-14) was 2 and done this year. I knew it would be a tough year. The 2nd loss, that eliminated us, was the most embarrassing game I've ever sat through as a coach - 25-2. YECH!
At least my Big League team (16-18s) is looking strong. We play tonight. We're 4 - 0, woo woo! I'm sure I'll miss the Sox again today (I hate that this Yankees series isn't NEXT week) but our game tomorrow is a 2:00 double-header so hopefully I'll get to see the finale in it's entirety.
Maybe I can even coax the laptop from Cathy and chat. It'a been a while.
