G92: Red Sox 1, Twins 0

Twins - 000 000 000 - 0 6 0
Red Sox - 000 000 01x - 1 7 0
Dice: 7.1-6-0-3-5, 108. His ERA dropped to 2.84.

Matsuzaka threw strikes -- with a good cut fastball -- and turned in his longest outing of the season. He allowed only six baserunners over the first six innings (and half of those came in the first inning). His pitch counts by inning: 25-9-10 14-12-13 13-12 = 108.

The Red Sox blew a scoring chance in the fourth. Singles from Drew and Ramirez gave Boston runners at the corners and no one out. Lowell struck out, but Youkilis walked to load the bases. However, Crisp popped to third and Varitek flied to center. (Lowell's strikeout was his only batting blemish; he walked twice and doubled.)

In the eighth, Pedroia doubled high off the Wall and took third on Drew's groundout. Manny's single to right field (his second hit of the night) brought home the only run of the game.

The Royals beat the Rays 7-4 in 10 innings, so Tampa's lead was cut to four games.

***

Scott Baker (3.65, 107 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.12, 137 ERA+)

Boston comes home after a 3-7 road trip (giving the team a 21-29 record away from Fenway Park). The Red Sox play three games against each of the Twins and Orioles before the break.

The AL East standings looks like this
             W L GB
Tampa Bay 55 32 --
Boston 52 39 5
New York 47 42 9
Baltimore 44 43 11
Toronto 42 47 14
so it looks like we've got ourselves a .... Wild Card Battle!
             W L GB
Boston 52 39 --
Minnesota 50 38 .5
Oakland 47 41 3.5
New York 47 42 4
Texas 46 43 5
Woo-hoo!

Only one other AL East game: Royals at Rays, 12:40 PM

Remember we were talking about how Rogers now runs short car commercials in between at-bats during Blue Jays game? Drunk Jays Fans is (quite rightly) fed up.

jumping in for a moment (emma's brushing teeth again).

waconah: wow, multiple mentions. If any of you (I guess that'd be joe grav) are going that way, let me know.

like your questions, joe. more human and creative than a lot of the stuff out there.

I got a second post from redsock. yesterday. it was lame, dumb, and stupid. pathetic.

Kubel fly out

laura k said...

If we didn't have the game on 2 channels, we'd be going nuts right now. Rogers just cut off the game in mid-inning.

nixon33 said...

9casey, why yes it is.

Jere said...

Last year during World Series time, we were constantly watching The Shining at our house. So I'll always associate it with the amazing '07 season.

laura k said...

lame, dumb, stupid AND pathetic! that's our mags.

Thanks :) Sadly, we're done with Pittsfield for the season unless we meet up in the NECBL championship series.

That movie still scares the shit out of me

allan said...

no auto trader commercials,
but fuck you rogers!!!!

laura k said...

Nix, cool profile.

s1c said...

The Shining - one of those famous movies I have never seen.

Also included in this is E.T.

Jere said...

one out, manny up, bottom 6. 0-0.

allan said...

no real need to show the game, rogers, any time you feel like showing some commercials, why you go right ahead.

Jere said...

I saw ET in the theater at age 8. "penis breath" is the highlight.

Jere said...

Manny goes down swinging.

Jere said...

Lowell with a guess what...

Benjamin said...

Youk'll single, at least.

Jere said...

missed a dong by a foot, CF wall, in front of OLD camera spot.

allan said...

doctor double to deep CF, about a foot or two from getting over the wall by the camera.

Jere said...

inning over as Youk pops to right.

Benjamin said...

Or not.

nick said...

I saw ET in the theater too. I think I was 9, maybe. They showed it at the Mahaiwe (big old theater) here this last year. Took emma. Hadn't seen it since that original release. It was fun even if they had edited out the rifles and cigarettes from police hands.

laura k said...

The Shining - one of those famous movies I have never seen.

I don't see a lot of famous movies anymore, but these were two great ones from the days when I still did.

Benjamin said...

Because cops aren't allowed to have guns. That'd be stupid.

laura k said...

They edited out cigarettes and guns????? OMG

Jere said...

It's getting late--Sox better call and thank Alec Berg for the Rangers tix or they won't get 'em for the next game...

laura k said...

Nick and Jere saw ET when they were 8 and 9.

I had just graduated college.

Jere said...

Dice seemingly losing all control. Walk (or possible HBP on ball 4) to start 7th.

s1c said...

I had just graduated college.

I was done with college and two years into the Navy.

Actually there are a lot of famous movies I haven't seen from the 60's / 70's - Also include in that are all three Godfather movies

nick said...

from wikipedia on the 20th anniverary edition:
Having become a father, Spielberg was more sensitive about the scene where gun-wielding federal agents threaten Elliott and his escaping friends; he digitally replaced the guns with walkie-talkies.[6]

age is a funny thing. I realized I was getting old(er) when I started talking in decades.

Joe Grav said...

And to me, ET is a relic of an era well before my time ;)

Jere said...

line-out DP!

laura k said...

yook with the U-DP!

laura k said...

It's a *little* more acceptable since Spielberg did it himself. But "having become a father"??? LAME!

Benjamin said...

Here's the revised ET look.

At least that one stayed in the park.

laura k said...

I realized I was getting old(er) when I started talking in decades.

That and the continuing to breathe thing.

nick said...

short list of movies I've never seen:
any godfather movies
jaws
close encounters of the 3rd kind
2001 (but I've seen all the major scenes in film classes and the like)
the last 3 star wars movies (I walked out after 5 minutes of jar-jar binks).

Jere said...

all i know is, "penis breath" was such a funny, innocent phrase to hear in a movie when I was 8. And one day much late it hit me that it implies you just had a penis in your mouth.

Anyway, triple to right with 2 outs. Span up.

allan said...

i assume the candy product placement stayed in.

whew -- ball did not go out.

Benjamin said...

Thank goodness.

Runs, please.

Jere said...

Line out to Lowell, stretch time at Fenway, 0-0.

Nick, please see Jaws.

allan said...

i thought it meant your breath smelled like a penis. no actual penis necessarily needed.

...

we're gonna need a bigger boat ... AND SOME FUCKING RUNS!!!!!!!!!

Jere said...

I finally saw 2001 in 2001. Then I went to rent 2010, and the girl on the phone at the store said, "I understand wanting to see 2001, but can you tell me why anyone would want to see 2010??"

I was like, Hey, what the crap? Because it's the sequel?

Benjamin said...

Yeah, Jere, but she had a point.

laura k said...

I never thought it implied penis-in-mouth either. It's like saying elephant-breath or camel-breath or ass-breath. I think.

Jere said...

well that's what I thought about PB at the time. I mean since it was a kid saying it, I guess he could've just meant that. But an adult wrote the line...

s1c said...

Jaws is absolutely one of the best movies, you have to see it.

I also liked Close Encounters and the first time I saw 2001 was in College and the special projector lens broke half way through the movie. Watched the last half with every thing distorted.

Benjamin said...

Fuck.

Jere said...

Coco robbed possibly of a dong at the RF bullpen wall.

Joe Grav said...

Holy cow, still scoreless? Wow.

L, you and A should definitely check out a Toronto FC game some time. Even if it's not your sport, I hear the atmosphere there is just amazing. I can't wait to experience it for myself.

allan said...

I finally saw 2001 in 2001. Then I went to rent 2010, and the girl on the phone at the store said, "I understand wanting to see 2001, but can you tell me why anyone would want to see 2010??"

She should have said: "Wait 9 years."

Jere said...

These last 2 fly balls are examples o why I prefer the old angle. Off the bat, I'm clueless as to how deep they are. They all look the same. Off the bat before they switch to showing you the outfielders.

laura k said...

the last 3 star wars movies (I walked out after 5 minutes of jar-jar binks)

We went to see the Jar-Jar movie while Washington Heights was in a blackout in 100+ heat.

The subway finally started to work, and we went "down" to the Upper West Side to the movies, just to cool off.

I HATED the movie.

I would have walked out but I was desperate for A/C.

And I hated to hate it because I loved the original 3 movies. Never saw another after that.

laura k said...

Joe, we work when the games are played.

I'd be happy to go - I like almost any sport live. But we can't take a day off for a game.

Jere said...

lugo lines a two out single. Jacoby up, as is the Twins' pen.

allan said...

the kid at the hospital was crying because he wanted to talk to heidi, but remy showed up

Benjamin said...

The second prequel was actually pretty decent. The third was tolerable too.

Joe Grav said...

Joe, we work when the games are played.

Ahhhh, that's right, I forgot haha. Well, I know they occasionally play Thursday games.

That's really cool, about the PA announcer.

LET'S GET SOME RUNS, SOX!

Jere said...

Star Wars--that whole deal was my "movies I didn't see that everyone else in my generation did." When the new ones came out, I started watching them "in order." Then after the 3rd, I watched 4,5,6 (ie the first three to be released), attempting to watch all in one day. It didn't work because I remember nothing.

laura k said...

The way some of you guys are with the movies you haven't seen is how I am with "big" movies from the 90s and 00s. I see tons of movies, but the big famous ones that everyone talks about, I've seen few, or none.

Jere said...

well, the "best picture" ones have been pretty shitty these last 20 years.

laura k said...

Joe, you're answering stuff I said in email. :)

For the rest of you...

Our friend (another US-to-Canada ex-pat) is the PA announcer for the Toronto FC.

Big whoop, I know.

Jere said...

top 8, 1 out as Jacoby makes a diving catch coming in.

laura k said...

well, the "best picture" ones have been pretty shitty these last 20 years.

looks that way to me. i go for small movies, anyway.

nice catch lyndon!!!

Benjamin said...

What, no trap call? What's with these umps.

Rob said...

Laura's boy Jacoooooooby

Jere said...

I'd ask what the hell an FC is, but, you know, I'm on the internet....

Oh, THAT sport.....

Rob said...

.the kid at the hospital was crying because he wanted to talk to heidi, but remy showed up

I would too. No offense to Remy or anything.

Jere said...

I'd want Castig to come to my hospital and call the operation. "And his eyesight returns, can you believe it?"

Bunt single with 2 strikes, man on first.

laura k said...

Nix was calling him 'Oby the other day. I like that.

Benjamin said...

Strikes?

Joe Grav said...

I wouldn't want troop.

IT'S A GREAT SURGERY SO FAR! AMAZING! BEAUTIFUL! FAST... oh, he screws it up and the patient is dead.

allan said...

better castig than trupe:

"THERE'S THE OPERATION --- OH MY GOOD, JERE'S HEARTBEAT IS LOW, WAY LOW, HE IS DEA .... oh no he's perfectly fine"

Benjamin said...

At least Castilla wasn't on second at the time.

Joe Grav said...

jinx

Jere said...

2 on, 1 out, Tito out to remove Dice.

laura k said...

LOL this is very funny

laura k said...

Yay Dice, you done good!!!

Benjamin said...

Jere said...

G-mer in. Needs a DP. Two and one on Morneau-graphic.

laura k said...

... ?

laura k said...

jeemer + runners on = scary

Benjamin said...

Bleh.

Jere said...

No DP in that Morneau movie. Walk. Bases loaded. 1 out.

laura k said...

Benjamin said...

Strikes please.

Benjamin said...

...

nixon33 said...

Jere said...

2 and 2 on Monroe

Jere said...

Youk nice catch on a foul pop. 2 out

laura k said...

Rob said...

Kay: "There's a scalpel."

See ya! You're dead!

laura k said...

During my surgery, Obie would probably say something like, "Some guy swung a shillelagh, hit him in the head... Joe, what did you have for lunch in Manhattan? Swordfish? Mmmm very good."

Ha! THey were so funny yesterday - first making fun of Jon Sterling's home run calls, then making fun of Jon Miller's clothes.

"Dave, would you wear something like that when you do TV?"

"No, I get dressed with the lights on!"

allan said...

Sterling: "You know, Suzyn, brain surgery is not like the other operations."

Joe Grav said...

game over, navs win 9-1, hopefully see you all on the flip side when i get home, GO SOX

laura k said...

PLEASE, YOU MOTHERFUCKERS!

You don't often see those words together.

kee-rist that was close

allan said...

excellent - no rally killing home run -- double keeps things going!!!

Jere said...

Near dong for Dustin.

Benjamin said...

Good thing ESPN didn't cut back from the commercial soon enough to catch that Pedroia hit.

s1c said...

FY!!!

Time for ON FIRE!!! to be like ON FIRE

laura k said...

ESPN missed the hit???

Jere said...

ok, all we need's a scrotum fly now

nixon33 said...

laura k said...

Dear Manny,

Please be Manny.

Love always,

s1c said...

ok, all we need's a scrotum fly now

Frag that, I want a Mummy!!!

laura k said...

obie = dave o'brien

Jere said...

crazy how Dustin's ball hit right near the top of the Wall and right by the foul line, fell to earth, bounced back up in the air, and a guy about 15 feet up along the side wall reached out and grabbed it.

laura k said...

No scrotum, give me a dong!

allan said...

Don: "This is Dr. Smith's 7th hip transplant operation for Dr. Smith. The first one was back on April 16, 1994, a Tuesday, at 10 AM. It lasted 5 hours and 14 minutes and .................."

Jere said...

I hope he's not swinging for the fences with the go ahead run on third and less than 2 outs. But I'll take the dong of course.

Rob said...

Pedroia leads the team in wall balls.

Benjamin said...

Woot.

Jere said...

there ya go Manny. wacks it to opp. field, and we lead.

allan said...

HE IS BACK BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

laura k said...

THANK YOU MANNY

nixon33 said...

couldve used that last night too!

s1c said...

This game is over, because after last nights game the bot is going to be amped.

Jere said...

"up on the green" balls?

laura k said...

well, he's back small, but that's ok!

laura k said...

the red sox have a one-nothing advantage in the contest
- Don

Benjamin said...

So jeemer in line for the win.

Rob said...

Sterling: "You know, Suzyn, brain surgery is not like the other operations."

As much as people try, you just CANNOT predict brain surgery! There are stats for everything, but you still have to perform the surgery.

He is high, he is far, he isssss dead!

Benjamin said...

A win he wouldn't even have to vulture, too.

Jere said...

BB. Let's break it open, Youk.

allan said...

sox enjoying this bass solo.

Jere said...

That's what's so great about brain surgery.

But it can be a killer diller.

laura k said...

He is high, he is far, he isssss dead!

I swear I was about to write that!

Rob said...

Bass fishing.

allan said...

McCarver: "After he performed the sur-gery, the doctor told him "Sure, Jere (ri)!"

Buck: "..."

laura k said...

jesse crain, on the animal team. or the all-bird team.

laura k said...

or the construction equipment team, of course, but that team is very small

Jere said...

Staats: And the surgery's successful. Must've been a Red Sox or Yankees fan.

laura k said...

McCarver: "After he performed the sur-gery, the doctor told him "Sure, Jere (ri)!"

lmao

laura k said...

Staats: And the surgery's successful. Must've been a Red Sox or Yankees fan.

also great!

Benjamin said...

Hawk Harrelson on vasectomies: "Sacks packed with... hegone."

allan said...

game over - phil wins.

laura k said...

phil, we are both cracking up from that, totally losing it

laura k said...

meanwhile can we get another run here???

Jere said...

Rizzuto in dental surgery: Gotta get across the bridge-work.

Benjamin said...

Can't be done.

Hold the line.

laura k said...

apparently not

allan said...

Berman: "It looks like the patient has a pinched nerve in his back, back, back, back ..."

laura k said...

bot time!

laura k said...

bridge-work!!

allan said...

this is why this team is real good.

it's 0-0, we get a run in 8th, and we're busy making silly jokes.

Jere said...

Thorne: You're fakin' it, get the fuck outta my ER.

Rob said...

McCarver: You know, this surgeon reminds me a lot of Derek Jeter. He's not as good as Jeter is yet, but he has a lot of potential. Jeter is so good and he has so much range. This surgeon here has the intangibles like Derek Jeter has.

laura k said...

you mean that's how good bot is

laura k said...

We lost a lot of 1-run games recently. It will be very nice to see a 1-0 win.

allan said...

"Very clutch. That's a type of surgical technique you can't teach in medical school. Also, he makes the little stiches, the ones that don't show up on the post-op report."

Jere said...

Morgan: You can see he's going to the medical bag, I'd guess he's gonna break out the toothbrush for this operation.

Jere said...

K. 1 out.

allan said...

That reminds me of a visit to the doctor I had when I was with the 1975 Reds.

Benjamin said...

Past a diving OB, the baby shoots down the hallway and into the waiting room.

Jere said...

we're one out away people

Benjamin said...

My water broke.

laura k said...

As I was saying...

Jere said...

win... niiiiice

Rob said...

DIRTY WATER. GOOD PLAY.

I love how Bot points at Youk like, "YOU DID THAT! YOU!"

laura k said...

dirty 1-0 water

Jere said...

NESN going absolutely crazy. I'm gonna have a seizure.

nixon33 said...

WEIRD STROBE NESN!

Jere said...

First Mary Hart and now this.

laura k said...

wow, that didn't happen on rogers. our feed disappears right after the last one.

laura k said...

hasta manana amigos

Rob said...

4 GB, 1.5 GA WC

allan said...

Vin Scully: "And I cannot believe what I just removed."

No?

Rob said...

Wasn't weird here either.

Jere said...

well NESN in greater Boston area and at Nix's house, just after the game ended, got stuck on a shot of Pedroia, which was just starting to cut to another shot, and the two went back and forth rapidly, causing a strobe effect. For a good 30 seconds at least before they cut to commercial. It was fun stuff.

Nice, on the Scully...or, "we take time out from this unassisted triple bypass to tell you about Armor hot dogs..."

Jere said...

wow, the McCarty/Merloni combo on post game with TC.

Joe Grav said...

WE WIN!

Rob said...

Bob Uecker: "I must be in the front rooooowwwwww... of the observation deck."

nixon33 said...

i hope the rays win both games at the stadium.
