G111: Red Sox 12, Athletics 2

Athletics - 200 000 000 - 2 7 1
Red Sox - 504 010 02x - 12 14 0
1st inning: Pedroia single, Youkilis home run, Ortiz single, Lowell single, Bay home run. 5 batters, 5 hits, 5 runs.

It was a nine-batter, 46-pitch first inning for Eveland. He got the side in order in the second and faced four batters in the third: Lowell double, Bay walk, Drew walk, Lowrie 3-RBI double. Lenny DiNardo came on and pitched the final six innings: 6-6-3-3-2, 89, facing one less batter than Lester.

Lester (7-7-2-1-5, 100) had a first inning hiccup, when Sweeney began the game with a single, Brown bopped a hanging curve for a one-out dong, and Thomas and Ellis followed with singles. After a visit from Farrell, Lester got a double play to end the inning.

And the A's did not get another runner past first base all evening.

Youkilis hit a second home run, a 2-run shot in the eighth, his 20th of the season. All of the starters got at least one hit -- and the entire bench saw some game time.

The standings remain the same as Tampa Bay beat Detroit 9-3 and New York beat Los Angeles 8-2.

***

Dana Eveland (3.88, 101 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.17, 139 ERA+)

But first: Angels/Yankees at 3:45 PM and Tigers/Rays at 6 PM

Wolf. Ever see them eat on a nature show?

laura k said...

I remember when gas costs 17 cents a gallon. Seven loafs of bread was a dollar.

Three movies for a nickel, and they gave you a stage show, too!

My father used to say that. Now that I think of it, can you imagine what this "stage show" was? At your local cinema in Brooklyn?? Yikes.

I am absolutely **astounded** that some baseball fans/people care about a player's hair!

You should be glad you didn't see the Fox pre-game today... it was just about all they talked about in their "Manny segment."

Re Sterling, I can see that point; the reason I had that thought is that to me his partner sounds so marginalized. J had always thought it was normal for partners to trade off doing the PBP every 2-3 innings, but Sterling does the whoooooooole thing.

allan said...

I'm anxiously awaiting Remy to start bashing JoS!

s1c said...

I just meant that he works with a partner and I think would prefer it that way

Exaactly. One of the ways that I think baseball pbp is different (why Scully is so good is that he comes across as sitting beside you on the couch just talking about the game, its just you and a friend). The other sports the "color" guy is asked questions about the 3-4 defense, how the zone works for a team or other breaking down of a sequence type of thing.

In baseball, a majority of the listeners already know the hit and run, sac fly and other trivia so that rpartee between the announcers is needed to keep you listening. I think that is Dales biggest problem, he just hasn't got that part down yet.

A few more runs guys.

Patrick said...

Detroit is failing the cause. 6-2 TB

efd said...

LOL, Redsock!

allan said...

That would make my year!

SoSock said...

Lowell looks cool with his salt and pepper look. It's like he's flaunting his age, I like it.

I hate it when I'm stuck with GDGD.
I love it most when the game's on the tube and Cat lets me borrow the laptop. Sitting in the recliner watching dongs with that warm feeling right ......uh, never mind.

Patrick said...

Ahh yes. Eveland should've eaten an apple today.

s1c said...

Ok is it just me or does Bay look like Lowries older brother at the plate.

laura k said...

I'm anxiously awaiting Remy to start bashing JoS!

That would be too cool!

Ever since Howard Kurtz dissed me in the WaPo, it's been all downhill for me.

laura k said...

Bay looks like Olerud, too.

s1c said...

Oops theres Heidi showing off her fake cleavage.

Patrick said...

Heidi?>!?! <3!!!

Joe Grav said...

Ever since Howard Kurtz dissed me in the WaPo, it's been all downhill for me.

Do tell me about this.

laura k said...

And now Dale is saying Bay looks like he could be On Fire's brother!

Jason Bay, man of mystery.

s1c said...

Bay looks like Olerud

Hey, you're right btw the only player that I think Francona totally mismanaged. Why he was on the bench 89% of the time in 2005 is still hard for me to understand.

laura k said...

Joe, I don't know, it was a long time ago. He quoted me in a column (online) in a really snide way. Something like "the name of the blog tells you where this person is coming from". It was great.

Patrick said...

I have a feeling we won't be leaving a lot of men on base this game.

Or at least this inning.

Joe Grav said...

Ever since I saw Heidi in person yesterday, it's been all downhill for me

SoSock said...

Ok is it just me or does Bay look like Lowries older brother at the plate.
The first thing I thought when I saw the picture of him swinging on RedSox.com this AM was, damn, he looks awful young. Older than Jed-I, yes, but still young.
Then again, there's that edge of senility thing and all.

Patrick said...

well there it is.

s1c said...

God it's good to score runs again!!!!

Rob said...

I'm so glad Lowrie has come into his own here with the Red Sox. Julio WHO?

efd said...

Yeah!! I'm glad Lowell didn't have to deal with a play at the plate, his running/slide didn't look good.

And Eveland is leavin'.

s1c said...

Oh yeah, lets get on a roll boys!!!

andy said...

Wholio?

Joe Grav said...

LOWRIE!

Lord Lynch said...

Thanks for coming mate. You've been an absolute star.

Time for the next stiff.

nixon33 said...

Olerud! canadian, no?

Rob said...

Hmm, is that what it is , I always that it was woof....

I thought about that after I said that. I think you're right, Casey.

Patrick said...

Are you suggesting Canadians all look alike?

s1c said...

NESN and the LL tournament. Will be going out to the bristol complex next week for work. Should be fun!!

allan said...

When I did both baseball and politics here, Andrew Sullivan linked to some post (probably 9/11 related) and referred to JoS as (more or less) "one-stop shopping for Red Sox news and wacky conspiracy theories"!

efd said...

holy crap, even Tek getting in on the action!

s1c said...

Olerud is a Washingtonian. Spokane I think. Though he did play for the Jays.

SoSock said...

Young Jed-I does it again. And 4 runs scored by Bay already in his first game and a half

s1c said...

Frag ocoC was robbed.

nixon33 said...

he also played for the RIP Expos , yah?

allan said...

The distraction-free Red Sox are relaxed and bashing tonight!

allan said...

Eveland: 2-8-9-2-2, 68

s1c said...

No expos for Ole. Jays, Mets, Mariners, MFY's and Sox.

When Tek is getting RBI doubles you know it's a good day...

Patrick said...

Sounds pretty sweet that Griffey even wrote an apology letter to the Reds.

Rob said...

Ever since I saw Heidi in person yesterday, it's been all downhill for me

So, good thing I take it?

Heidi, the blue NESN cap, just doesn't look right on you. What's with that?

Joe Grav said...

referred to JoS as (more or less) "one-stop shopping for Red Sox news and wacky conspiracy theories"!

I saw that, re-reading the archive.

Patrick said...

I have a feeling that no one at JoS is going to the Kanye West concert.

Joe Grav said...

Yes, a good thing.

Rob said...

Don and Jerry talking about Manny again...

Lord Lynch said...

9-2.

Enough for me to retire to my bed for the evening.

I may be around tomorrow, but wish all of JoS world a jolly good evening.

Rob said...

Sounds like it was a brief thing though.

allan said...

I tried finding the Sullivan mention, but nothing came up.

?

laura k said...

Who's Cdn besides Bay?

(About 30 million ppl, but you know that I mean.)

That was an awesome plug from Sullivan!

Eric Alterman used your research in a book, too. (Alterman...? Can't look it up now.)

Patrick said...

O'brien suggesting that Lester could eventually be our ace.

A thought that never crossed my mind. I thought Dice and Buchholz might get there, but Dave has a point.

Joe Grav said...

Patrick said...

Lowell's hip pain isn't getting in the way of his defense.

allan said...

Doctor with a Jeterian play from behind third! FU CI!

Rob said...

I agree with Obie. The no-hitter did him about as much good as it could. It gave him a world of confidence, as well (DOCTOR DEFENSE!) as the cancer thing, etc. At this point this season, Josh Beckett is what you'd call the ace, but Lester is the ace on paper.

laura k said...

I found it: Andrew Sullivan plug.

Rob said...

Patrick, where are the seats located with those 3 AM manchester tix?

Rob said...

andrewsullivan.com is about as alive as itstribetime.com

allan said...

Beckett? I'd say he's our 3rd best starter so far this year, behind Lester and Wakefield. Maybe even 4th, behind Dice.

106 ERA+

allan said...

I need to get the starters defensive neutral stats.

Patrick said...

R.F Grandstand Sect 10 row 4, seats 9 and 10

laura k said...

AndrewSullivan.com works. It brings you to his blog at The Atlantic.

Rob said...

It would just be how Beckett is characterized by many - the ace. For example, I'm rather confident he'd get the start for Game 1 of the playoffs.

allan said...

Maybe I should start a blurb section on the right.

Patrick said...

I don't worry about Beckett, but I wish he was more dominant this year.

laura k said...

Maybe not.

Rob said...

Blurb section?

Rob said...

Don's head as a binky!

allan said...

As with the Tribe, it'll never be Andrew Sullivan Time.

Rob said...

Starting to rain at Fenway.

9-2, boy what a difference a whupping makes when you are on the whupping side.

Anybody spied AMY yet!!!

laura k said...

She looks like Jason Varitek in LL, right?

Patrick said...

I'm not a fan of these commercials saying we should stay out of the sun. Moderation is a better message.

efd said...

she should have brought a JoS sign, I'm sure NESN would put her right on the air if they saw that!

laura k said...

Patrick, I just clicked on your profile to get a better look at your avatar, I see you list on your interests: nieces.

s1c said...

B-fly - whats with Heidi's hat? I don't understand what it is with women, hair and rain.

laura k said...

I'm not a fan of these commercials saying we should stay out of the sun. Moderation is a better message.

It means the same thing, I think. No one will stay out of the sun completely. They mean don't lay out working on a tan. Being outside in moderation with sunscreen is staying out of the sun.

I think so, anyway.

Rob said...

This should be a very short shower.

Amy's sign:

Patrick said...

It's just upsetting to me because people should be getting sun regularly, and not shy away from it.

Rob said...

"Everyone but Coco has a base hit so far tonight"

Base hit for Coco!

s1c said...

Everybody drink a hit for ocoC and Tek tonight.

laura k said...

Patrick, are you going to game thread from Oregon? You'll probably be working during game times.

Whoa, it's 10-2! Scoring runs is so much fun. I had forgotten.

laura k said...

Everyone gets sun regularly, just in daily life. Plus you can take some Vitamin D supps if you live in the north.

s1c said...

Frag. FY gets Fyed.

Patrick said...

Sadly, I'm probably not going to even be following games much at all from Oregon.

Although my priorities stand at:

Farming>Girls>Red Sox.

So there will be too much distracting me from the Sox.

allan said...

I like that a lot of our outs are line drives.

A Conformer said...

OK, I'm ready to Renterize Lugo.

And about Manny's hair, tell me about it. I had to get a haircut and shave before they would allow me to work in the parks. Doesn't fit the kind of 'image' they want to project... bleh.

s1c said...

Boras is denying the Edes column about MBM?

Guess I'll have to swallow the bile and go read Edes last column for the globe.

Rob said...

SOX APPEAL FTL.

A Conformer said...

And the whole "who does Bay look like" thing. I'm voting for Peter Weller. BTW, Weller is in one of my favorite movies- not Robocop... Naked Lunch.

laura k said...

I had to get a haircut and shave before they would allow me to work in the parks.

No wonder you are A Conformer!

But seriously, that is so stupid.

Still, I'd shave my head for your job. It seems so fun. The travel, anyway.

allan said...

About MBM asking to come back? That seemed way too odd.

Edes said the tidbit came from "a source with direct knowledge of the negotiations".

laura k said...

Peter Weller... I think I used to know him from theatre. I will go look.

Rob said...

You should see about going to Romania to farm, Patrick.

s1c said...

Globe survey is running 85% saying glad the Sox traded Manny.

laura k said...

Totally. My memory occasionally works.

Peter Weller off-broadway. McGinn-Cazale Theatre.

allan said...

Edes also mentions Manny balking at boarding the team bus to take them to the Anaheim airport en route to Seattle.

Context implies Theo said it, but it doesn't actually say. Edes quotes Tek: "I heard about that. I didn't see it."

A Conformer said...

Are you suggesting Canadians all look alike?

With their flappy heads and their beady eyes...

(A bit late on this one, but I only now read it)

allan said...

I imagine a few more Manny behaviour leaks will be coming out in the next few weeks.

laura k said...

Are you suggesting Canadians all look alike?

With their flappy heads and their beady eyes...

LOL

I'm still waiting to hear what this referred to. Jason Bay and...?

Olerud's not Cdn. Jedi's not. Drew's not.

laura k said...

Leaks or lies, we'll never know.

s1c said...

I imagine a few more Manny behaviour leaks will be coming out in the next few weeks.

About as sure of a thing as you can get in today's world.

laura k said...

AND LOWELL IS BARELY MOVING DOWN THE LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!

And he's running at full speed!

Tony said...

Hello everyone...looks like the Sox have got their hitting shoes on today. Does it look like Lester can go 7?

allan said...

No, he clearly slowed up about 2/3 of the way there.

laura k said...

Joke. Lowell = slowell.

I only have radio, I can't tell who's running.

Bay, however, was not doggin' it.

allan said...

I was busy typing, did Bay run hard or was it a Lazy Hat Trick?

allan said...

Okay, he can stay.

Ortiz? Gone.
Lowell? Gone.

Gotta have players who respect the game all game every game!

Rob said...

I was busy typing, did Bay run hard or was it a Lazy Hat Trick?

He was sprinting, and almost beat it out. Was within a step or so.

Rob said...

Lowell's left the game... Cora SS, Lowrie 3B

allan said...

I know it was a joke.

Rob said...

Bat Masterson warming

Rob said...

I know it was a joke.

Ohh.

laura k said...

Not running out a grounder is one thing, but not running PLUS having long hair PLUS laughing CANNOT BE TOLERATED!!!!

Patrick said...

I heart Masterson.

s1c said...

Ok looking at the Globes notebook - "While general manager Theo Epstein said the trade seemed to improve the atmosphere in the clubhouse, it didn't seem to have the desired effect on Ortiz, who clearly was feeling Ramírez's absence. Ortiz, sitting in front of his locker, took a long draw from his energy drink.

"I need to calm myself down now," he said. With that, he waved off any more queries.

If the media starts going after Papi there will be a riot in Boston.

laura k said...

Bat Masterson

allan said...

Masterson's slider > Heidi's anything

laura k said...

Poor Papi. He loved playing with Pedro, he loved playing with Manny.

Joe Grav said...

ANYTHING?

allan said...

Another story described Papi as answering every quesrtion with a straight blank face. No smiles.

...

I'll be leading that riot.

Joe Grav said...

I noted to Amanda yesterday that our Dominican contingent is shrinking.

laura k said...

Masterson's slider > Heidi's anything

Jeter : shortstops :: Heidi : hot women

Over-rated.

laura k said...

Another story described Papi as answering every quesrtion with a straight blank face. No smiles.

That is sad!

s1c said...

Stretch, baby, time for the stretch.

Everybody seems a little more laid back tonight. Good to see they are respecting the game.

A Conformer said...

No wonder you are A Conformer!

But seriously, that is so stupid.

Still, I'd shave my head for your job. It seems so fun. The travel, anyway.

BTW, L, have you seen my photos from Buenos Aires with the hair and beard?

laura k said...

must buy volvo... must buy volvo... must ...

laura k said...

Ofer, yeah, I did. Is that your usual look?

You looked very relaxed and happy. SA must have been great.

allan said...

TB 9-3, top 7th

Patrick said...

That sucks for Ortiz. Makes me thing of him jumping in circles with wholio and Manny when MBM hit #500.

He lost a friend with that trade. Makes me realize how silly it is trying to buy him a Dominican friend a la Okajima.

Tony said...

I feel for Tizzle. It's hard to lose a friend in the clubhouse. And I know he'll get over it, but he should be allowed a few days to feel bad about it.

Great outing from Lester today. He's at 100 pitches, so I'm guessing that's the end of his day.

s1c said...

Herald is saying the Sox got Josh Wilson from the Pirates and are pursuing Borowski. WTF

laura k said...

We have a houseguest this weekend, someone attending a wedding in TO. He's here from London, so I hope he's asleep when I get home.

laura k said...

Yeah, I agree. He'll get over it, it's part of life, but we want everything to be great for him. He deserves the happiest life in the world!

Rob said...

Herald is saying the Sox got Josh Wilson from the Pirates and are pursuing Borowski. WTF

Josh Wilson?

Borowski wouldn't be such a bad reliever - just not a closer, and not really even a set-up man.

allan said...

Jack Wilson?

...

Jedi packing his bags???

A Conformer said...

Ofer, yeah, I did. Is that your usual look?

You looked very relaxed and happy. SA must have been great.

I always look like that when I'm backpacking. Of course, this was my first backpacking trip...

allan said...

Borowski, like Ann Landers, sucks. Didn't he get sent to the minors?

We might as well keep Yeller.

WTF indeed - paperwork held up?

Rob said...

Josh Wilson: Minor league infielder.

No worries, Jedi.

Patrick said...

I thought Borowski was cut completely. Released.

A Conformer said...

Jeter : shortstops :: Heidi : hot women

Over-rated.

I said this yesterday, but I think it got drowned in the comment wave- saw Heidi for first time last night. Not impressed.

Rob said...

Josh Wilson was traded for a player to be named later or cash.

s1c said...

No respect being shown to the A's as the entire B team is out in the field now. Francona must be really relaxed.

allan said...

FREE THE MAYOR!

A Conformer said...

Josh Wilson and Joe Borowski. Two more steps in Theo's plan to have the all-J roster.

Patrick said...

OVERRATED?!?!?!

s1c said...

saw Heidi for first time last night. Not impressed.

Women are like wine, they each have their own particular bouquets of flavor and taste.

Tony said...

I'm not sure I'd want Boston to have a guy whose last stint in baseball reached a point where, during last year's ALCS, I was actively rooting for Cleveland to bring him in. IIRC, the one time they did he got his clock cleaned.

Patrick said...

Daisuke vs. Oakland? I see many walks. Five.

allan said...

Isn't 5 about average for Dice? :>)

efd said...

honestly, if I had to make a choice between Borowski or another go-round with Gagne I'm pretty sure I'd take Gagne.

allan said...

Gagne every time, yep.

Maybe they will use Borowski to clean out the dugouts.

SoSock said...

OK, grandkid bathed and in bed, with Snuggles and chocalate milk, wife has supper and is in bed, I have commandeered the laptop, and we are scoring profusely.
goodtimes

I really want to go to South America. Spent 2 summers in Central America as a teenager, well, 3 wks 1 year and 4 wks the next. It really has had an effect on my outlook ever since. Experiencing an entirely different culture was mind altering, and I'm sure I would appreciate the experience even more now.

Patrick said...

Yeah, I guess I'm not really going out on a limb.

Tony said...

BTW, should we all be keeping an eye on the Twins as well now? They're definitely part of the playoff race at the moment.

Patrick said...

Hurray for Amy!

allan said...

Don announcing the A's new C and RF. They were actually out there last inning, at the start of the 7th. Close enough.

laura k said...

Geez Patrick, yes, over-rated. Looks like a friggin Barbie doll in that pic.

Patrick said...

I wouldn't bother watching outside the Al East, because first and foremost we are going to win the division.

Rob said...

YOOOOUK DOUBLE DONG ACTION!

Patrick said...

Barbie girl looks are good for someone you just look at and never would have a relationship with.

A Conformer said...

Gagne every time, yep.

Maybe they will use Borowski to clean out the dugouts.

But he had 40+ saves last year! That's what you need, someone that comes in and gives exactly the right amount of runs to not cough up the lead. Someone who knows how to win. Wouldn't you rather have the 5ERA 40 saves guy than the 1.50ERA guy who only has holds?

allan said...

Yeah, that's a pretty generic model shot. She looks way better in the mid-inning spots.

efd said...

Youk double-dong!

Patrick said...

YOUUUUUU!!!

Tony said...

I wouldn't bother watching outside the Al East, because first and foremost we are going to win the division.

Well said. Consider my question cheerfully withdrawn.

laura k said...

Fuckin A!!!

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK

allan said...

Now THAT'S a sweaty dong!

A Conformer said...

Youk's second half slump is killing us.

efd said...

allan said...

Not a fan of Cora in the cleanup spot, Tito.

laura k said...

Amy must be having a blast.
