ALCS 1: Red Sox 2, Rays 0

Red Sox - 000 010 010 - 2 7 0
Rays - 000 000 000 - 0 4 0
Matsuzaka took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the bullpen trio of Hideki Okajima, Justin Masterson and Jonathan Papelbon shut the door on the Rays.

In the fifth inning against Shields, Jason Bay walked and raced to third on Mark Kotsay's pop fly double down the left field line. Jed Lowrie's fly out to right scored Bay with the night's first run. (The Red Sox had threatened in the first. Dustin Pedroia walked with one out and went to third on Kevin Youkilis's two-out ground-rule double to right, but J.D. Drew struck out.)

Boston made it 2-0 in the eighth when Pedroia singled with one out. He stole second before David Ortiz walked and then he scored on Youkilis's double off the tip of Carl Crawford's glove in shallow left.

Dice walked three Rays in the first, but wiggled out of trouble, retiring retired 16 out of the next 17 batters. He started the seventh by allowing two singles, but with runners at first and third he got a fly ball to short left, a strikeout and a fielder's choice.

Matsuzaka allowed two more singles to start the seventh and was pulled. Jeemer got Carlos Pena to hack on 3-0 and fly out to Drew in right-center. Then Masterson got Evan Longoria to hit into a 6-4-3 DP. Bot set down Tampa in order in the ninth: K, PF5, K.

NLCS: The Philles held off the Dodgers 8-5 to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

It Is On!

Tampa Bay and Boston met 18 times during the regular season. The Rays won 10 games, the Red Sox eight. Eleven of the 18 games were decided by three runs or fewer, six by one run (the Rays won all six of those), two in extra innings. Home records: Rays 8-1, Red Sox 7-2. ... And they brawled on June 5.

Speaking of numbers, does 9 really equal 8?

The Red Sox added Mike Timlin to the roster for the ALCS. Gil Valezquez -- who was added mid-DS in place of Mike Lowell -- was left off. ... The Rays added pitcher Edwin Jackson and subtracted Eric Hinske.

Joe Maddon, on the evenness of the two teams:
I think you can expect a lot of what you saw during the regular season; I do. There will be a lot of tight games, I think. Both sides have got good starting pitching and bullpens. Offensively, they probably have a little bit more hitting ability overall, but we have that ability to hit in the clutch. ...

[I]n a seven-game series like this, you truly have to play it one at a time ... it's really magnified at this particular juncture. ...

They're probably saying the same things — it's pretty even based on the familiarity with the two groups, the number of times that we have played against one another, the close games we have played against each another; the fact that we've finally broken through up there a little bit and they got their win down here. It's really a very balanced situation and it's going to come down to the pitching once again. ... It's going to be a grind-it-out kind of series.
Fox:
Boston and Tampa are young, tough, hungry, and athletic. They're everything the New York Yankees are not.
The Rays bullpen has been lights out against the Red Sox in Tampa. In the nine Trop games, the quintet of Grant Balfour, J.P. Howell, Dan Wheeler, Trever Miller, and Chad Bradford has made 18 appearances, pitching 18.2 innings. They have allowed only 11 hits and 7 walks (0.96 WHIP) and one earned run (0.48 ERA), while striking out 15.

Dice, if you could not walk the bases loaded again, that'd really help us all out quite a bit. Thanks.

Thanks, D. Hope you didn't pull any of that pubic hair you've got on your chin during that swing. That would've hurt.

Uh, Castig and Dale... LOOK A BASEBALL GAME! We don't care about fucking football.

Jere said...

Caray: Why say the batter's "ready to unload" and not "the pitcher's ready to blow it by him"? Oh right cuz the Rays are batting. I know it was a hitter's count but come on.

Tony said...

Blargh, and he was doing so well.

Not bad. Just one walk.

It's the partners effect. You could be the best color commentator but when you work next to a couple of yahoo stupid twatbags like Caray and Buck, you tend to loose an IQ point or two.

Or 36.

Kind of like when Dave O'Brien works with Rick Sutcliffe.

I occasionally agree with Bill Simmons, but I'm fully in agreement with him on this (not that it's such a mindblowing point): if Ortiz keeps hitting like this, the Sox lose this series.

redsock, I was surprised you never posted any thoughts on his Manny column. I thought it was well written, if somewhat unfair to Theo.

I knew I shouldn't have gone back on my vow never to enter NYC with a car again. I left Allentown at 6 to have enough time to get here for first pitch, and here I am, turning the TV on with 2 outs in the bottom of the third. Fucking GWB.
I did catch Jon Miller & Joe Morgan on the radio- Daisuke's 1st inning sounded painful.

(Good evening, all).

Tony said...

Take a seat, Crawford.

Am I nuts or has Dice looked as good since the 2nd as he has all season?

Dice Kay > Floyd

Finally he's looking like he's on it.

Take a seat, Floyd.

Still bitter he didn't help out the 02 Sox as much as I thought he would.

A Conformer said...

ofer, will you be in NYC tomorrow night?

I'm probably here for at least a week. Why do you ask?

Tony said...

Now that was a great inning.

Rob said...

69/40 for Dice now.
48/30 for Shields

Jere said...

"I'm probably here for at least a week. Why do you ask?"

I'll be signing copies of my book at that Red Sox bar, Professor Thom's before the game tomorrow night. (Which also means I won't be in the thread tomorrow night as I'll be watching the game there.)

Rob said...

So, Ofer... Where have you been so far this summer? Can you list the cities you've stayed in?

Rob said...

I'll be signing copies of my book at that Red Sox bar, Professor Thom's before the game tomorrow night. (Which also means I won't be in the thread tomorrow night as I'll be watching the game there.)

Damn, that sounds awesome.

SoSock said...

OK, I was going to be polite to Bob and not log in until after he left, but I just can't keep my mouth shut about this crew!
Shallow flies that "just missed being home runs", JD "struggling" to make a catch, YELLING out "Boston strands two!", and "Big Game James?".
What kind of non-proffesional shit is this, and why is it tolerated in something as prominent as a LCS?

Jere said...

Caray, again, why say the Rays are trying to dethrone the Red Sox, and not mention that the Red Sox are also trying to win? How is this guy allowed to do this?

Benjamin said...

"All these fans making their confident sounds".

Tony said...

In lieu of listening to the announcers, I'm playing the new Dylan Bootleg Series. If you like latter-day Dylan at all, you need to own it. "Red River Shore" is his 1990s "Blind Willie McTell", which is saying something.

Way to get it started, Bay!

A Conformer said...

What the fuck? How can they say this game is going for the home team? It's 0-0!

allan said...

did sager just call yook "lucas"?

Benjamin said...

KOTSAY!

Jere said...

Kotsay running from first to second reminded me of Forrest Gump.

I..WAS... RUNNINGGGG!!!

Rob said...

4 walks but all bagels for Dice.

allan said...

suck on that, big game james

Tony said...

I'm still in awe that Kotsay did something productive.

A Conformer said...

All these outside shot of the Trop make me think of how good it would look imploding.

Yay a run!

Benjamin said...

Runs are good.

allan said...

8-9-1 for dice. hold 'em!

A Conformer said...

So, Ofer... Where have you been so far this summer? Can you list the cities you've stayed in?

Hmmm... NY, Richmond, Philly and its northern suburbs, Allentown (PA), Ocean City (NJ), Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, Asheville (NC), Pigeon Forge (TN), DC... plus last year there were a bunch more. Oh, and I'm planning on coming to Boston on the 23rd or so- hopefully there will still be baseball played at that time...

A Conformer said...

That was a pretty smooth catch by Bartlett, I must admit.

SoSock said...

Let's go LBJ! Damn, that actually WAS a pretty good play :(

Ish - things are pretty much the same. The on-line car project has progressed nicely, but may have hit a wall. That's OK tho, with what I have we're awful close to being there already and Cat is now scouting out possible buys at Craig's list and a couple of local sites.

Jere said...

allan said...

fuck the wall, sosock -- we're getting that $$$$$!

Rob said...

This is amazing. 8 strikeouts in 4 2/3!

Jere said...

another one caught looking. effin yeah.

Tony said...

Take a seat, chump.

A Conformer said...

Ofer, did you fly or drive to the various cities?

No flights for me this summer, yet. I passed the time in today's drive estimating how many miles I've done- I think I'm around 5500 since July 1st.

Rob said...

Season high in strikeouts: 9, against Oakland... in Oakland right after Japan.

Jere said...

"Jere, sounds good. You'll be staying for the game, I suppose?"

Yes. I don't care if we sell 0 books, I'm just always up for watching the Sox at Thom's, in the middle of NYC, with a million other Sox fans. So fun.

Rob said...

5,500 sounds about right... I once drove 1,000 miles in one day.

A Conformer said...

allan said...

Joe C also just said what shouldn't be said.

A Conformer said...

5,500 sounds about right... I once drove 1,000 miles in one day.

Sounds brutal. My record is about 450, but it took 10.5 hours. Some steel beams on a bridge on I-66 collapsed or something. 1000 miles, that would be around 14 hours?

Rob said...

Joe C also just said what shouldn't be said.

I don't think it matters. I think it would take a major miracle to throw the Big Bagel.

s1c said...

Nothing better to wake up to than a Bay walk and a Kotsay double leading to the only run in the game.

Time for Pedroia to start a rally here.

A Conformer said...

Pedroia and Ortiz are going to start hitting... NOW

nick said...

amazing how the teams in this 1-0 game can just keep scoring runs.

14 or 15 hours. There were quite a few stops in between. Probably added up to four or five hours though.

Left the motel in Lumberton, NC (20 miles from the SC border on I-95) at 9 AM... Got home to York, Maine (bout 10 miles from Portsmouth, NH) at 5 AM the next morning.

That makes a little car that has 120k on it pretty optimistic, eh? I've never driven a car that's had more than 120k on it. My car last year didn't pass inspection and I just never really needed to get it fixed. Needs a couple of tires and the exhaust pipe might need to be repaired. Don't have the money right now to get the car back on the road. It's just sitting there.

A 2000 chevy cavalier... That was the car I drove 1,000 miles in one day with.

They say it but they don't. National guys always do. Visiting broadcasters always do. Castig, for instance, will say everything else except for the two words. Although he'll talk about other pitchers having thrown no-hitters, using the term in that context. They say he hasn't allowed a hit... Why should that be any different?

Rob said...

That was a cool catch.
