ALCS 1: Red Sox 2, Rays 0

Red Sox - 000 010 010 - 2 7 0
Rays - 000 000 000 - 0 4 0
Matsuzaka took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the bullpen trio of Hideki Okajima, Justin Masterson and Jonathan Papelbon shut the door on the Rays.

In the fifth inning against Shields, Jason Bay walked and raced to third on Mark Kotsay's pop fly double down the left field line. Jed Lowrie's fly out to right scored Bay with the night's first run. (The Red Sox had threatened in the first. Dustin Pedroia walked with one out and went to third on Kevin Youkilis's two-out ground-rule double to right, but J.D. Drew struck out.)

Boston made it 2-0 in the eighth when Pedroia singled with one out. He stole second before David Ortiz walked and then he scored on Youkilis's double off the tip of Carl Crawford's glove in shallow left.

Dice walked three Rays in the first, but wiggled out of trouble, retiring retired 16 out of the next 17 batters. He started the seventh by allowing two singles, but with runners at first and third he got a fly ball to short left, a strikeout and a fielder's choice.

Matsuzaka allowed two more singles to start the seventh and was pulled. Jeemer got Carlos Pena to hack on 3-0 and fly out to Drew in right-center. Then Masterson got Evan Longoria to hit into a 6-4-3 DP. Bot set down Tampa in order in the ninth: K, PF5, K.

NLCS: The Philles held off the Dodgers 8-5 to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

It Is On!

Tampa Bay and Boston met 18 times during the regular season. The Rays won 10 games, the Red Sox eight. Eleven of the 18 games were decided by three runs or fewer, six by one run (the Rays won all six of those), two in extra innings. Home records: Rays 8-1, Red Sox 7-2. ... And they brawled on June 5.

The Red Sox added Mike Timlin to the roster for the ALCS. Gil Valezquez -- who was added mid-DS in place of Mike Lowell -- was left off. ... The Rays added pitcher Edwin Jackson and subtracted Eric Hinske.

Joe Maddon, on the evenness of the two teams:
I think you can expect a lot of what you saw during the regular season; I do. There will be a lot of tight games, I think. Both sides have got good starting pitching and bullpens. Offensively, they probably have a little bit more hitting ability overall, but we have that ability to hit in the clutch. ...

[I]n a seven-game series like this, you truly have to play it one at a time ... it's really magnified at this particular juncture. ...

They're probably saying the same things — it's pretty even based on the familiarity with the two groups, the number of times that we have played against one another, the close games we have played against each another; the fact that we've finally broken through up there a little bit and they got their win down here. It's really a very balanced situation and it's going to come down to the pitching once again. ... It's going to be a grind-it-out kind of series.
Fox:
Boston and Tampa are young, tough, hungry, and athletic. They're everything the New York Yankees are not.
The Rays bullpen has been lights out against the Red Sox in Tampa. In the nine Trop games, the quintet of Grant Balfour, J.P. Howell, Dan Wheeler, Trever Miller, and Chad Bradford has made 18 appearances, pitching 18.2 innings. They have allowed only 11 hits and 7 walks (0.96 WHIP) and one earned run (0.48 ERA), while striking out 15.

It looks like things went better while I was gone though - maybe I should call them back!

Rob said...

I liked what 9Casey suggested earlier today. Or was it yesterday? Doesn't matter. You have a pbp guy, then you have a color commentator from each of the two teams.

I am so happy that TBS had to call out the no-hitter.

TWO out!

Take a seat, Gross. Dear Jesus, my heart is going a million miles an hour.

Jere said...

he got a "pop up or strikeout" twice in a row. Now just needs any out.

SoSock said...

GOT HIM!!

Jere said...

sit down, fucks. 1-0.

Amy said...

HOUDINI!

Dear Jesus, my heart is going a million miles an hour.

Shit, you'll be stone dead of a heart attack by the middle of Game 5.

Tony said...

Thank the Lord.

7 shutout from Dice. Could not ask for more from him than that.

Pepe Lepew said...

Oh, well.
Now just win!

Awesome. I hate that word, but that was just awesome.

Nah, but I will have lost about 6 or 7 years off the end of my life. And if the 08 Sox win the whole enchilada again, I won't miss them.

Rob said...

Awesome. I hate that word, but that was just awesome.

Awe and wonder.

SoSock said...

Houdini :)

Jere said...

I tried something new that inning. I thought about all those playoff games I watched the Yanks in in the late-90s. I thought, back then, I'd be rooting for the other team, and when they seemed to have a chance to break through, I'd think, "They might tie it or even take the lead, but they'll just go and give up three quick runs to the stupid Yanks and that'll be that."

And since we are now the "team that wins all these games," it gave me a sense of calm. Like, Even if they do score, we're the fucking Red Sox.

allan said...

7 shutout from Dice. Could not ask for more from him than that.

Man, you got that right.

Mmmmm, I have to be at work in 9 hours.

Benjamin said...

How much van der Waals force do you think Youk's beard generates?

Rob said...

Tonight's attendance: 35,001

Jere said...

Some rare face time for Lenn Sakata.

Tony said...

Someone want to tell me why they just showed a random World Series highlight?

Rob said...

Howell's sort of a lefty K-Rod the way he always almost falls over after every pitch.

Jere said...

Caray keeps calling it a "skinny 1-run lead." Lemme guess, if the Rays ever have a 1-run lead, it'll be a "plump 1-run cushion."

Rob said...

Someone want to tell me why they just showed a random World Series highlight?

They want guys to get hard tonight.

SB FY!!!

Amy said...

Although the bias is still obviously there, it is not nearly as blatant as during the ALDS. I bet there were complaints.

Or else these guys are just Angels fans. And only secondarily Rays fans.

Tony said...

Big stolen base!

Benjamin said...

Now hit him in, Papi.

Amy said...

Come on, Papi.

Benjamin said...

Chip Caray appears to have started his career in Orlando, so some homerism might be expected.

allan said...

we call our white dog tala "skinny face", so we think "skinny run" is amusing.

Sarah Haendler said...

we're the fucking Red Sox.

Nice, Jere. I think you're right.

Jere said...

Youk chants at the Trop

allan said...

tbs showing "game 7 faces" at the trop - in game 1!!!!!

Tony said...

What is it about Joe Maddon where he constantly looks disappointed? Is it his Decemberists glasses?

Benjamin said...

Youk's chance. According to TBS, he was filling in for Lowell in the lineup.

allan said...

yeah -- yook, the bench player with the chance to make good -- who also led the team in RBI during the season

Rob said...

I love how the bullpen guys were running around like they were headless chickens.

Sarah Haendler said...

What is it about Joe Maddon where he constantly looks disappointed? Is it his Decemberists glasses?

The emo face came free with the glasses and he couldn't say no.

Rob said...

OFF HIS GLOVE!!!! ANOTHER RUN!!!

Amy said...

YES!!!

Sarah Haendler said...

HOOOYEAH!

allan said...

CLANK!!!!!!!!!!

Tony said...

CLANK! Nice D, Crawford.

BIG RUN!!!

Sarah Haendler said...

We're the fucking Red Sox.

A Conformer said...

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!!!!!

The Red Sox bench players strike again!

Rob said...

How'd that feel, Carl?

Jere said...

Ouch! My neck is injured from doing a Townshend Windmill just now!!! But it's worth it!

SoSock said...

Right ON the tip of the glove!!

E-7 if you ask me

Rob said...

Here comes the second coming of John Rocker. Give him time - he'll develop more characteristics.

A Conformer said...

And the vaunted & venerated FKR bullpen can't hold their 0-1 lead

Tony said...

The emo face came free with the glasses and he couldn't say no.

Ha! "With this pair of glasses, you get a free sourpuss and a copy of Panic! At The Disco's first album."

Jere said...

"we're the fucking Red Sox.

Nice, Jere. I think you're right."

Well, seriously, it's amazing how up through last year, and even this year, you hear people acting like we'll "choke" just because we're the Red Sox (which was silly enough BEFORE '04.) How many championships will it take? And fans seem to do it, too. I got two different emails today from Red Sox sites saying "you're probably nervous about this series...." And granted, they followed it with "here's why not to be," which is a step forward, and granted, the heart always pumps for Sox fans in October because obviously this shit means a lot to us. But still--are we not at the point were we can be like, "Okay, let the other team be all nervous and worried, we've proven we can win in any situation"?

allan said...

Buck: "He sure did"

DRINK, M-FUCKERS!!!!!!!!!!

A Conformer said...

So, any Nick Cave fans in da house? I just saw him in DC a couple of days ago.

Rob said...

Jeemer warming.

Amy said...

Shit, don't hit our guys.

Rob said...

Holy shit. That one hurts.

Tony said...

Balfour, you shithead.

Rob said...

Shoulder! Close to the head. Fucking ballfour.

A Conformer said...

Where's Ococ- charge the mound!

I hope he's ok- that could've hit him in the head.

Benjamin said...

Guess they decided they're losing this one anyway.

Amy said...

Get revenge...get a GS

Benjamin said...

Don't fucking say "potentially fatal blow" after that HBP, you assholes.

Rob said...

This season... Sox pitchers have hit 11 Rays. Rays pitchers have hit 15 Sox.

Benjamin said...

Farell: "BULLSHIT"

Rob said...

Balfour figuring instead of a BBI he'd just plunk him.

Rob said...

It's part of my game.

Jere said...

all we needed was a damn fly ball there

Tony said...

Augh.

Pepe Lepew said...

Well, at least Bay got his cuts.

A Conformer said...

What? Drew hit a grand slam in last year's ALCS? REALLY?

Fuck, Bay. At least it's up to Kotsay now, and not Tek...

allan said...

I got two different emails today from Red Sox sites saying "you're probably nervous about this series...."

I think people are just trying to push your buttons.

That shit is totally dead now.

Amy said...

Oh damn. But at least we got another run.

Tony said...

Aaaaaand Kotsay goes back to doing nothing.

Rob said...

Caray: "Balfour did his job..."

Does that include him drilling Drew? Probably.

Benjamin said...

Bleh.

A Conformer said...

So, an X-minute wait for Daisuke. Is he even going back out there?

Benjamin said...

Was there a warning after that HBP?

Tony said...

Question: how can you guys stand listening to the announcers? I started firing up iTunes for the playoffs a few years ago, and have never looked back. Much more preferable listening to "Do It Again" by Steely Dan instead of Caray and Buck spout gibberish.

BTW, one nice thing about being an adult is being able to appreciate Steely Dan. Those guys wrote some great songs.

Tony said...

I'd guess Dice's night is over.

9casey said...

ish said...

How blatant can Balfour make that HBP, Drew coming up first base open lefty on the mound, yank the lefty, first pitch hits him......

Rob said...

Dice Kay is still out there...

Tony said...

And I'm wrong. Well, how about that.

A Conformer said...

What does pussy metal have to do with the ALCS?

Also very little excuse for a fastball being that errant.

Amy said...

What is DiceK's pitch count? I am surprised to see him back out there.

Benjamin said...

112 pitches.

Tony said...

Okay, THAT should be the end of Dice's night.

A Conformer said...

I have to say, even after that hit, that I like this move by Tito. I really hope I don't get proven wrong.

Tony said...

No? Well, okay.

Amy said...

Yeah, get him out of there. NOW.

Benjamin said...

C'mon.

Tony said...

Aw, shit.

allan said...

tekballa

Amy said...

Guess not. Francona has confidence.

Tony said...

Crumbs.

Benjamin said...

At least the runner didn't advance....

Jere said...

Listening to these announcers makes me feel like they are playing a video game as the Rays, with the Red Sox as the computer team.

Amy said...

Shit shit.

allan said...

WP? please.
heidi is official scorer??!?!?

...

bullpen? must trust assassin tito ...

Tony said...

And THAT's finally the end of Dice's night. Thank Jesus.

Benjamin said...

Just think, Okajima could've started this inning with no baserunners.

allan said...

jeemer

Jere said...

I'm gonna write to TBS and request that we see TWO Bon Jovi song montages each game. One just doesn't satisfy me.

Amy said...

Not glad to see him come on with MOB.

Jere said...

get 3, infield

allan said...

if this inning ends 2-1, i'll be happy.

Thank god for Drew's struggles today. And that wasn't neither a a pop up or a lazy fly ball- that was damn well hit.

Verve performance at the 4th was amazing...huge huge thunderstorm right at the start of "a storm in heaven".

I had the song "shivers" stuck in my head at one point last night (nick's pre-birthday party band and on the soundtrack to "Dogs In Space").

Triangular film involves him and rollins drunking it about?

SoSock said...

Of course - that was NOT almost a home run, even though it was hit deeper than the ball in the 1st, because it was hit by a Boston player

bot in -- i don't think tbs showed him warming at all!

andy said...

I have a problem. I see the Angels acting entitled against the Sox and now I see the same attitudes from the raymonds. These teams are forgetting that this Sox team was built for the postseason. They are not the same team as in the regular season. Just because you did well against a team that was probably resting someone or leaving pitchers in longer. You did well against a team without any doubt that they would be in the postseason. Now you get hurt when you can't do as well against this new team in their element.

Rob said...

bot in -- i don't think tbs showed him warming at all!

They did.

Jere said...

Ok, I'll tell you what triangular film is. From Henry Rollins' spoken word album chronicling his days in Black Flag, he talks about Nick Cave at some schmancy party going around to people asking if they'd act in his movie, and holding his hands out, looking through the triangle shape he put them into, and telling people he was the first director to use "triangular film."
