G1: Red Sox 5, Rays 3

Rays - 001 000 020 - 3 3 0
Red Sox - 103 001 00x - 5 9 0
Beckett -- 7-2-1-3-10, 93 -- began the season beautifully, throwing 11 pitches to three batters in the first, and striking out two Rays.

In the bottom half, after Ellsbury struck out looking, Pedroia gave Boston a quick 1-0 lead by clubbing an inside pitch over the Wall. Ortiz lined Shields's next offering into center for a single and after Youkilis flew to right, Drew went the other way, doubling off the Wall, and Bay walked. With the bases loaded, Lowell let Shields off the hook by popping out to Navarro on the first base side of the plate.

After a perfect second (on only five pitches) and with one down in the third, Beckett had retired the first seven Tampa Bay hitters on only 18 pitches, 15 of them strikes. But he then hit a bump or two. The 8-9 hitters walked (Gross was nearly thrown out while stealing second) and Iwamura singled to followed with a hit to left to load the bases. Crawford jumped on the first pitch and flew out to the track in center, bringing in Gross and tying the game. Longoria flew to right to end the threat.

The Red Sox stormed back immediately. Shields walked FY on four pitches and after Ortiz flew out to right, Yook singled to left (breaking an ugly 0-for-18 against Small Game James). Drew's hard grounder to first -- Pena dove towards the line, saving a hit and serious damage -- brought home Pedroia, Bay's single scored Yook, and Lowell's double to left scored Bay. Boston led 4-1.

Beckett was cruising -- striking out two batters in each of the fourth and fifth -- when he walked Iwamura to start the sixth. Crawford doubled to left-center. Beckett got Longoria to foul out to Varitek back by the screen and, with Javier Lopez and Ramon Ramirez warming, he caught Pena looking and got Burrell to ground easily to third.

Varitek homered down the right field line in the sixth, giving Boston a 5-1 lead. (That deserves its own paragraph.)

Hideki Okajima relieved Beckett and began the eighth by hitting Bartlett and walking Iwamura. He struck Crawford out on three pitches and was pulled for Justin Masterson. After an uncontested double steal put runners on second and third, Longoria sliced a single to right, scoring both runners and cutting Boston's lead to 5-3. Masterson slipped a strike three past Pena -- his fourth K of the day (he saw only 15 pitches) -- then got Burrell to fly to right. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out the final two batters.

The lineups that were expected (below) are the actual lineups. Terry Francona talks a little bit about his batting order here.

Is there a whiter player than Jason Bay?

How did that put out at 3rd happen?

Jere said...

ish returns for 201?

Rob said...

Missed it by that much, Jere.

tim said...

We need a Doctor dong!

Benjamin said...

Youk had to hold up to make sure it wasn't caught, couldn't quite get to third on time.

tim said...

That is not at all what I wanted.

Benjamin said...

And more bleh.

Jere said...

liner to Crawford at shoetops, Youk had to hold, ball dropped in off glove, he picks it right up and throws to third, barely getting Youk on the force.

Jere said...

and then Lowell with a grounder to third, Eva touches bag, then crawls across infield to touch first getting Lowell by three steps for the DP

beckett:

retired 7 in a row
BB, BB, 1B
retired 8 in a row

Benjamin said...

Pretty sure Longoria had the ball fedexed overnight to first.

Benjamin said...

No walks, please.

allan said...

E-Long could have jogged over to 1B and had the unassisted DP.

Zenslinger said...

Top ten reasons James Shields is better than CC Sabathia:

10. He made it through 5 innings on opening day.

9. He has a strikeout on opening day.

...

Benjamin said...

That's what Jere said but funnier.

Benjamin said...

More bleh.

Jere said...

so key that pop up stayed in the park!

Tek did something useful.

Sometimes you have to downshift. Downshift JB!

Benjamin said...

Sit.

Fuck train picks up steam!

Beckett for CY Young award!

Rob said...

That is a weird graphic for NESN's pre-game show. It took a moment to realize Eck was tossing a ball up and down. He was leaning in on Heidi, like he was trying to feel her up. Then the baseball flies up, goes down the other side and he does the same thing with TC. Then he does this very subtle dip thing like he's demonstrating something and saying "Yeah....!"

They might want to re-shoot that.

Benjamin said...

Much better.

s1c said...

escape!!!

CKA!!!

Jere said...

I'm getting glimpses of the new seatbacks and stairways in the field boxes. Looks like the seats have slats, mocking wooden seats, as opposed to a solid back like the old plastic ones had. And you can see the new concrete steps between rows. All this and more in this month's issue of Stuff Only Jere Cares About. Check us out on the Web!

Way to get out of that, Josh!

Benjamin said...

81 pitches through six.

Jere said...

And Bob Lobell misses Tek's dong.

Well so far I am not seeing how the Rays will win 90 games as the media promised us they would.

I'm just saying how much the media slammed the Sox and gave the division to the Rays just to sell subscriptions or whatever. I hate all those prediction shows and all that. It is all complete and utter bullshit. MLB network actually was fair I'd say. A team goes to the WS and they are now the greatest team ever to play. Remember 2007? Maybe they should be a success more then one year.

And Tek just further adds to the media's point.

Patrick said...

Gosh, I wish we had a good bullpen that could hold onto this 4 run lead.

andy said...

I hatttte the devil rays.

I hear the Red Sox are gonna change their name to just Sox.

tim said...

LBJ being OcOc.

Benjamin said...

LBJ still hitless and witless.

Jere said...

I saw Eck checkin' out TC and Heidi's butts there.

andy said...

Throw him high and inside.

tim said...

Everyone has a hit except our leadoff hitter...wtf!

tim said...

There's the Pap jerk-off commercial again.

andy said...

What a letdown LBJ has been. In relation to the anointing we gave him back in late 2007. He was supposed to be the next big thing. I think he still can be good but he won't be great. Hey if he gets on base ever he may steal a lot of bases.

Rob said...

Jere it's perfect for Eck isn't it? He's already got the 70s porno thing going...

allan said...

andy, i like your anti-raysism, but there were more than a handful of games last year in which the sox looked like a fourth place team, at best.

andy said...

Sorry I am just letting out all the off-season frustration in this first game. Doesn't help that I'm laid out in pain cuz of my back.

Jere said...

Give Ellsbury more than half a game this year...

Benjamin said...

9

Patrick said...

BEKKKKKKKKKETT

andy said...

But the Sox are gonna be top 4 every year. The Rays have been bottom 1 forever.

Jere said...

everybody up?

Rob said...

XK!

tim said...

10!

Patrick said...

This is turning me on. Now I know what Andy feels like.

Jere said...

maybe Josh didn't like being called "the other ace" oh so casually on....weei.com I think it was.

allan said...

nice afternoon of work for jb

andy said...

Woohoo my fantasy pitching looks legendary compared to the rest of my league. I have 26, next closest is 16. I have Beckett, Meche, Lowe and Cliff "Never Shoulda Won the Cy Young" Lee. I also have Lester so tomorrow should be fun too. Wait is he the number 2 or 3 pitcher?

Rob said...

Normally you'd think well he could come out for another inning right? Then you look at the Red Sox bullpen and think nah. Game's in good hands.

andy said...

Is that a troll? What is that?

andy said...

I am not bashing LBJ based on today. I am just saying that even myself thought he would be something outrageously amazing. So far over the last year and a quarter he has been just another player.

allan said...

7-2-1-3-10, 93

Rob said...

It all hinges upon whether Mr. Lyndon gets on base or not. Take some walks and gets some hits and he'll be great.

andy said...

Saying Maddon is an elite manager is like saying that asshole from Colorado is elite.

Rob said...

93 pitches I think Beckett will come back out with the bullpen up and running.

s1c said...

Êž

andy said...

I would let beckett go out again.

allan said...

Troll? I thought that was about GBA.

//

Don, if you read JoS, you'd know Maddon was interviewed before Tito post '03. Maddon was my pick for manager.

andy said...

Depending on how he feels. I would let him decide.

Rob said...

Yeah I do think Maddon needs a few more seasons of success in order to be considered "elite".

andy said...

meuniermr said...
aww jeez not this shiat again

Troll?

Rob said...

Does it seem like to anyone else that Youk jumps up before sliding down? That can't be good for the bum.

andy said...

This catcher sucks.

tim said...

Troll? I thought that was about GBA.

Yeah I was confused as well.

Patrick said...

Youk unencumbered by the goatee, showing the wheels.

Jere said...

"I am not bashing LBJ based on today. I am just saying .."

But I'm just sayin', would you be saying this if he was 4 for 4 today?

andy said...

The chin hair is like a big muffler.

allan said...

jeemer in.

Patrick said...

So, who's coming in?

Pepe Lepew said...

I just got back from climbing a mountain. How we doing? Up 5-1? Tek has a home run! Woo hoo1
Tek's gonna have a big year. I can feel it.

Patrick said...

oh, ok(i)

Patrick said...

What mountain, pepe?

Rob said...

See I was planning for Jeemer to be in this game. Got my Jeemer shirt on!

Jere said...

Beckett just climbed Mt. Fuck-all

Benjamin said...

None of that, please.

Patrick said...

Beckett just climbed Mt. Fuck-all

I wonder if he's available for comment?

allan said...

and if it was gba-related, i agree.

Jere said...

Beckett's ERA is about 11 below CCs:)

Rob said...

Wishing for a little more Jeemer command.

s1c said...

Jeemer, lets get cranking here

Pepe Lepew said...

What mountain, pepe?

Oh, a little one called Mount Jumbo. It's only 4,990 feet high. It's been snowing for five or six solid weeks, and today it's an incredible 69 and sunny, so this has been my first chance to go outdoors in week. I'm training to climb Mount Rundle in Banff in August.

Benjamin said...

Please no walks.

Patrick said...

sweet, a strike!

allan said...

hey, the lamb says cut the shit, jeem.

Pepe Lepew said...

Hmmm, find the strike zone, Jeema

Rob said...

Reminds me of climbing Mount Major in New Hampshire last fall. Only 1,800 feet but I love how they call it Mount Major.

Patrick said...

BWAHAHAH, thank you OKI.

Benjamin said...

There's one.

Patrick said...

I climbed Mount Major with my 3rd grade class.

Jere said...

I climbed Mount Reallytall in August

Pepe Lepew said...

Reminds me of climbing Mount Major in New Hampshire last fall. Only 1,800 feet but I love how they call it Mount Major.

Rundle's 9,600 feet. It's a BEAST!
Woo hoo. Strikeout!

andy said...

Jere I would not have said it in that case. But he will not turn it around much from today's performance if all of last year is any indication.

Rob said...

My sisters climbed Mt. Major in 6th grade but I never did in school. Went on a fall foliage day trip and decided to do it on a whim. I had my camera, a bottle of iced tea, sneakers and a light jacket while everyone else we encountered had backpacks and hiking boots and all sorts of outdoorsey equipment. I had no problems.

s1c said...

Fragging kidding me

Rob said...

Proof that it wasn't a bad idea to double-steal there.

Jere said...

how about a DP to get out of this

Rob said...

Hey, this is 2009. It was ONLY a four run lead. Those can evaporate quickly.

Jere said...

the other proof being neither the catcher nor third baseman moving on the play....

Rob said...

Heh. Golden sombrero for Pena.

Patrick said...

Go take a golden shower, big P.

s1c said...

The Golden Sombrero for the man from tampa!!!

allan said...

gold shower for pena.

...
fuck you tek, for allowing those SBs.

Rob said...

the other proof being neither the catcher nor third baseman moving on the play....

Essackly. They should know by now that running while trailing by 4 runs should not be unexpected.

andy said...

The DRays are like slimy little street hustlers.

andy said...

First opening day roster made for this guy. He must be good.

Benjamin said...

Okajima with the 54.00 ERA.

s1c said...

Sorry Don o, but allowing your inherited runners to score is not getting out of a jam.

Benjamin said...

And yet he still got more Ks than Sabathia did.

andy said...

Bring up Lars. I am over Lowell now. Ok ok there are 161 more games and I want it all in this one.

allan said...

he is good -- nelson got a 2004 ring!

Patrick said...

Real nice applause for Veritek.

andy said...

I think the common attitude is we are over the media. All the talky talky. Now when we finally have the actual action they still can't shut up.

andy said...

Ok so this Nelson guy gets a pass. He could lose that pass real quick.

Benjamin said...

"Hall of Fame Monitor Pitching - 4 (1334), Likely HOFer ≈ 100"

Unfortunately good enough.

Benjamin said...

Paps in.

Benjamin said...

There's one.

Rob said...

TWO.

Pepe Lepew said...

I don't like that Navarro guy.

s1c said...

Those are the numbers i like to see against RS pitchers.

Rob said...

Filthy, slimy, nasty, DIRTY Opening Day Water!

tim said...

1-0 :)

Patrick said...

Oh hells yes. Hell yeah. BWAHAHAH.

s1c said...

dirty oh so dirty water!!!

Jere said...

You mean... Who's got TWO aces?

Jere said...

"You mean... Who's got TWO aces?"

Three

9casey said...

Beckett being Beckett.....Any question on how hurt he actually was last year.....

Sarah Haendler said...

Man, that was fun...

Here's to the next 161! (+)

andy said...

Yeah! The media know it alls were down on Beckett. He WAS hurt last year. It was nagging him all year. I hate people who get paid to make shit up that is supposed to be news or expert analysis.
