G8: Athletics 6, Red Sox 5 (12)

Red Sox - 300 020 000 000 - 5 12 1
Athletics - 500 000 000 001 - 6 11 2
Forget Dice's 1-5-5-2-0, 43 disaster of an inning, after being handed a 3-0 cushion. And don't even ask why Javier Lopez (.2-1-1-3-1, 25 (13 balls)) still has a job in Boston.

Just enjoy the fantastic 10.2-5-0-3-12 line put up by the quintet of Justin Masterson, Manny Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez, Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon. (It's the most strikeouts from a Boston bullpen in a game since September 28, 2000.)

And know there is a game tomorrow (well, later today).

Daisuke Matsuzaka (6.75, 77 ERA+) / Dana Eveland (4.50, 101 ERA+)

In a Extra Bases post, Adam Kilgore has a great line:
If the Red Sox were playing an NFL season, they would be about halfway through the third quarter of the first game.
Then, in a breath of fresh air and progressive thought, he talks about BABIP (and OPS+ and WHIP):
The Red Sox have a .250 batting average on balls put in play. (This means that if you take away home runs, sacrifices, and strikeouts, the Red Sox are batting .250.) The .250 mark is worst in the American League and better than only the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. The league average is .300. That means the Red Sox have run into some good defense, gotten unlucky, or both in relation to the rest of the majors.
SoSH also has a BABIP thread.

***

Lefty Eveland made 29 starts for the A's last year, posting a 4.34 ERA. He also walked 4.1 batters per nine innings (77 in 168 innings), excessive though not quite Diceian (97 in 167.2, 5.0).

BP 2009:
Almost a throw-in as part of the Haren deal, Eveland always showed plenty of potential on a pure stuff level, but he almost ate his way out of both the Milwaukee and Arizona organizations. Although he's still a big guy [6-1, 220], he fit in much better with a team that knows it isn't selling jeans. He pitched like the steal of the century in the first half, putting up a 3.46 ERA in his first 19 starts, but the wheels fell off after the All-Star break, when he posted a six-plus ERA and took a brief trip back to the minors when the Red Sox hammered him for nine runs in two innings [August 2]. ... He's an average, usable starter, which is all that the A's are expecting from him at the back end of their rotation this year.

Matt from Dirty Watah posted some pictures and audio clips from last night's game. He may have more from tonight's game.

And predictably we make Eveland look good the next at bat.

tim said...

Donkey coming in most likely. Time for a Maclays. This is gonna be a long night.

laura k said...

If by hurt you mean sucks, yes.

Amy said...

Uh oh, Dice K coming out? Hurt? Or just not a good night?

Rob said...

Wow Dice is done tonight.

Jere said...

Remy speculates right hip injury for Dice

allan said...

save dice - start him tomorrow.

laura k said...

Eveland - sounds like a dyke bar

Amy said...

Well, at least Ortiz got it out of the infield this time.

Masterson coming in?

tim said...

My eyes are hurt from watching that pitiful performance.

Rob said...

If Remy can speculate on player injuries why can't anyone speculate on his absences this season?

Anonymous said...

This is still a close game, I hope Bat can hold them down..

Amy said...

LOL, Laura, re Eveland!

laura k said...

Good point Ish, speculate away

allan said...

since i have a post ready to go about idiot media glooming and dooming, i should say that my annoyance for the rest of the night is at tonight's game only.

Amy said...

What is Remy basing his speculation on? Why the right hip or back?

Rob said...

I also find it funny that we know the player salaries but we don't know how much they pay in fines for incidents in the season.

Benjamin said...

You're saying Eveland is making us look like a bunch of pussies?

allan said...

good game - dice only walked 2

Benjamin said...

good game - dice only walked 2And he kept his pitch count well under 100 for the first time in recent memory.

Benjamin said...

Fuck Blogger's fucking shit.

allan said...

remy missed games because of a goat fucking incident -- or so i heard ...

manny misses fewer games than remy.

Amy said...

LOL, Allan. Like saying he struck out the side when he faces ten batters and gives up 5 runs, like Lester did.

Rob said...

Opponents are hitting .411 off of Dice-K so far. For reference, his opponent BA last year was .211.

I was dancing in a lesbian bar...

CB 1 run over 4 innings 1st time out for the paw sox.

nixon33 said...

wow, what a fucking nightmare start to the season.

Amy said...

Remy looks really thin. Maybe he is sick? Or did he just go on a diet?

Rob said...

Castig: "Well the Nationals didn't lost today..... They didn't play."

Jere said...

Remy said he saw Dice grab at the hip, I don't know when this was that it supposedly happened.

Amy said...

Here's a trivia question for you guys: when did the Sox last start a season as badly as this one? And where did they end up at the end of that season?

(I don't know the answer, of course. I am just hoping for a comforting answer.)

Patrick said...

Hopefully this means Double H comes up and kicks the american leaugues ass!

Jere said...

Nice Richman, Nick.

Jere said...

1996, 7 games out, third place. They said it before the game

allan said...

worst start since 1996 (after 7 games, i guess)

Rob said...

The Red Sox last started 2-5 in 1996 and finished third in the division.

Now I'm going to go check and make sure that was right.

laura k said...

nick, tonight? seems kinda early for that.

Amy said...

Boy, you all got that answer very fast. I need to ask a harder question.

Unknown said...

Wait, did we actually just have a clean inning?

allan said...

oakland commercial celebrating giambi as the second coming ("he IS the show") ... after acting like he was satan for the last x years.

Rob said...

Amy, I heard it... Somewhere. But I just checked Baseball-Reference and I was right.

You know how the Boston media is. They could probably tell you the exact date that Dana Eveland lost his virginity.

Jere said...

Richman quote by Nick

Amy said...

MOB! No one out!

laura k said...

hey, could everyone please go here

http://calgary.ctv.ca/

and vote for the war resisters? let them stay, of course.

laura k said...

i know, I was making a lame joke

Amy said...

Well, I don't like the 96 comparison then. Finish third is not an option.

tim said...

Voted...Looking at those results, not surprised its a Calgary poll.

Unknown said...

So, Youk's OBP is around .600 while the rest of the team is .300ish...

allan said...

oakland commercial celebrating giambi as the second coming ("he IS the show") ... after acting like he was satan for the last x years.

laura k said...

it's redneck calgary, so we need help, go vote

tim said...

WTF?!

Rob said...

I voted too. I wasn't expecting to see those results.

Holliday's saying to himself... Who gets picked off now huh?

laura k said...

thanks tim. yeah, calgary.

FUCK FUCK FUCK

****

kenney was out there today, met w/ a lot of protestors - he hid.

Amy said...

Oh, sure. Leadoff man on could not last.

Jere said...

well think of it this way--we almost always have a great April over the last few decades but only twic

youk you fuckin idiot SLIDE!

tim said...

Two shitty calls.

nixon33 said...

this is fucking embarrassing.

Amy said...

Bad call. Definitely hit the grass first.

laura k said...

thanks ish. calgary = the texas of canada

allan said...

FUCK (/3000 pt type)

Rob said...

The ball also hit the ground.

Jere said...

Benjamin said...

Nice trap, asshole.

Unknown said...

GDGD is lagging, but I get the impression something bad just happened.

Rob said...

That's a very good analogy, L. You tell that to someone and they immediately understand.

tim said...

I thought it hit the ground watching it live, the replays validated it. wtf ump?

Jere said...

BAY, when you hit the ball RUN TO FIRST

SoSock said...

Wow, I posted that last comment from my desktop, and by the time it showed up on the screen there were 11 more comments already on the laptop.

Benjamin said...

Hey look an extra-base hit that would've scored a couple runs.

tim said...

Wow buck, that was a Tim play!

Unknown said...

Ah...that'll do it.

Rob said...

L do you have any good idea as to what percentages in other parts of Canada people feel about the war resisters?

allan said...

looked like a catch on my replay

nice dive asshole -- balllands 10 feet away

laura k said...

this april totally and completely sucks. but people, are you seriously worried about the season??? seriously???

jesus christ don't make me yell at you fuckers!

Jere said...

If Bay had run it's a triple and if Youk had slid it's an RBI triple. WHy haven't the announcers pointed these things out?

Amy said...

I think that poll shows why these TV and internet polls are bogus. Certainly nothing scientific about it when anyone can vote and recruit others to vote! But I guess they still may influence someone.

tim said...

Crosby fields the hit, does a lap around the stadium, then throws to first to beat Lowell by 30 feet.

Unknown said...

And the suckage continues.

laura k said...

Ish, yes I do. All polls show about 65% say let them stay. Parliament has voted twice on it (non-binding resolutions), and all the opposition parties say let them stay. That corresponds with about 60-66%.

Amy said...

HAHA, Laura, I knew you'd be yelling at us eventually! I am not worried about the season, but I sure hate this start. And I am a bit worried about the injuries. And I do wonder if Papi will ever get his power back.

Jere said...

Crosby reads Infinite Jest in 100 installments, throws, gets Lowell by four steps.

laura k said...

Internet polls are completely bogus. But we never miss an opportunity to try to be out there and influence.

tim said...

Worried? me? why???

SoSock said...

At last, my son is going to bed. He had the laptop and my ancient over-worked desk unit won't even let me switch between GDGD and JoS without me missing 1/2 an inning.
See everyone in a minute or 2

Amy said...

I am all for tilting the results in favor of the right result in those polls since someone somewhere may actually believe they reflect public opinion. So I voted, of course.

Not as bogus as those annoying Facebook quizzes though.

laura k said...

Amy, you knew I would do it eventually!! :)

Jere, nice IJ ref.

Rob said...

I've been worried about Papi for awhile... Ever since the beginning of last season, really. Apart from health, he is one of the better scouted hitters in the game today. Yes he'll get hits and he'll show his dong but the overshift works and so does the steady diet of off-speed pitches.

I don't know if he can't adjust or if he doesn't want to, but either way if you have the appropriate game plan on how to handle Ortiz, you have little reason to be afraid of him as an opposing team.

SoSock said...

Just call me Alfred

laura k said...

Thanks Amy :)

Are you hiding those fb quizzes yet? I haven't seen any since hiding that "living social" app.

Of course I'm hardly at fb right now so that's also why.

Benjamin said...

WTF are you doing, Green?

tim said...

Almost had a Green-Bay Packing there!

Unknown said...

The starting rotation should be taking notes right now.

tim said...

Very well said Ish (re: Papi) - my sentiments exactly. The same reason I think LBJ and, to a lesser, lesser extent, Lowrie, have gotten grief recently.

Amy said...

Alfred?

OK, the Sox get this half inning before I go to sleep. When do they return to the East? Or at least Central time?

tim said...

aflack answer...Bellhorn!

Jere said...

The Yanks had a bad start in most of the years during their 13 year playoff stretch.

Maybe it'll be a refreshing twist to not have to hear all the idiots talking about how we'll blow our division lead, during this time while we don't have it.

tim said...

Oh...answer starts with "D"

tim said...

Back home for the weekend, Amy.

SoSock said...

Wait, I just saw my last (only) comment from my desk unit, 2 Freaking Comments ago!
I wrote that about 10 minutes ago, and have commented on the laptop twice since.
I really need to clean up or maybe just destroy my desktop PC.

Rob said...

Amy, tonight's the last 10:00 start until next month.

Jere said...

what was the Aflac again? I just heard Remy's D answer but missed the Q

Amy said...

Yes, Laura, I keep hiding quizzes. But it's sort of an pointless exercise because new quizzes keep getting spawned and then I have to hide them. Some of my recent hides: what punctuation mark are you? what Beatles song are you? SO STUPID. But thanks for the tip. It did weed out some of the crap.

Two away, and almost bed time.

SoSock said...

Alfre E Neuman -
What, me worry?

Amy said...

Good, these late starts are killing me.

tim said...

Aflac was - Cust broke record for most Ks last year with 198, who held the record before this

Jere said...

"what punctuation mark are you?"

When the Sox are playing like this I'm a total colon.

tim said...

w00t Bobble!

Jere said...

aha, I knew the bobble would cost him

Amy said...

I thought so, SoSock! Good old Mad Magazine.

LBJ prevents me from going to sleep just yet.

Anonymous said...

This game as a loss + one tomorrow and we hit the panic number.

Rob said...

Bobble Crosby.

Unknown said...

Well, that's a start.

Rob said...

An LBJ steal! Helps my tiebreaker chances.

tim said...

dammmmmmmmit. I just BR'd the Aflac, and am confused - maybe it was the AL K record...because Reynolds has the record now.

SoSock said...

Damn, Ellsbury does his work, but Petey doesn't do his.

Amy said...

Eck, that's the inning.

Well, good night, everyone. I hope things improve---if not in this game, then soon.

allan said...

panic number?

wtf? speak for yourself.

Unknown said...

FAIL

Amy said...

Tim, I thought the question had to do with who had the most singles, not Ks, but I might not have heard correctly.

Rob said...

Tim I'm pretty positive they said AL K record.

Jere said...

what's the aflac Q?

Rob said...

Nomar left with tightness in the left calf, Castig tells me.

tim said...

Found the answer.

Rob said...

Jere... Cust broke who's AL strikeout record last year?

tim said...

I posted it up there, jere.

Jere said...

thanks.

Oh and it's a D....hmm

allan said...

deer?

Jere said...

ooh Rob Deer?

Jere said...

oh I see it up there Tim.

tim said...

MASTER! MASTER!

Rob said...

Once again NESN's cameras catch the batter with his fist in his mouth rather than the pick-off play.

Jere said...

Master of pitching is pulling the striiing

Jere said...

Ish--you should be impressed, they made a quick cut! It just went to the WRONG camera.

tim said...

nice, jere!

Rob said...

It really is amazing how some guys just get injured so often... Exeter, NH's own Chris Carpenter strained his rib cage running the bases tonight.

Benjamin said...

...

Jere said...

nicely turned single play

Rob said...

Jere, I also love it when they cut back to the pitch when the ball is halfway between the mound and home.

Benjamin said...

WTF Drew

tim said...

Just realized this is the JoS 1 matchup!

Well, hopefully it will be better than this shit so far.

WTF DRUU?

Rob said...

You're kidding me, right? Oh look, a BASEBALL, J.D. A BASEBALL. Look at it!

Jere said...

another good one tonight was the close up of Jacoby going back to first.

Drew, I .... just.... have no words

tim said...

Have you seen my base ball?

SoSock said...

Damn O-Cab

Jere said...

And now the shot of third as the play's at second. Good thing we could see second in the background!

allan said...

Just realized this is the JoS 1 matchup!*

Could be some lively comments though.

Rob said...

The baseball is like a straw. If you don't keep your eye on it, it will betray you.

Rob said...

Nomar better be healthy again by July because I'd like to see him play at Fenway in person.

SoSock said...

Based on comments I see now, perhaps I shoald have said "damn Drew"

allan said...

mdc up

tim said...

MASTER!

MASTER!

Benjamin said...

The Sox had better be healthy by July, because I'd like to see them play in Fenway.

Jere said...

I bet the last thing OCab thought when he hit that was that it would go PAST the right fielder.

Nice job, Justin. Way to keep the ol' 'posure.

allan said...

L says good night - her puter lost its connection and does not feel like coming back.

SoSock said...

At least Giambi still sucks.
Thank Goodness!

Jere said...

Mastaaarrrr mas trrrrrrrrr

Rob said...

That too, Benjamin... Minor details.

Rob said...

Ish says good night to L.

tim said...

Night L!

tim said...

NO FUCK UPS PAPI MON!

Unknown said...

Masterson: 5 pitches more than Dice-K, triple the number of innings, and five fewer runs.

SoSock said...

Benjamin - nice :)

allan said...

i smell runs

Jere said...

I'm thinking about all the teams that are letters: A's, B's (Bruins or Boston Bees), C's (Celts).....M's (Mariners)

tim said...

Jays?

Rob said...

Showing Andrew Bailey "getting loose"... Apparently getting loose in the bullpen means bending over at the bench digging through your bag.

Jere said...

Jays, O's

nixon33 said...

Ortoast.

tim said...

Apparently he didn't check the JoS comments on this game thread while he was in the on-deck circle.

Rob said...

G...Men?

Nevermind.

Unknown said...

Now batting: 90% of the Red Sox offense.

Benjamin said...

Youk could hit a couple dongs and then hit a third in extra innings. That'd work.

(I'm crying.)

SoSock said...

We ned you Youk!

tim said...

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK

Rob said...

91% of the Red Sox offense.

tim said...

Blogger Kevin said...

Now batting: 90% of the Red Sox offense.
Youk, is that you?

Benjamin said...

Damn, only a single. He'll get picked off trying to steal home.

Rob said...

Can Drew atone?

Benjamin said...

Kevin the red-nosed Youkilis?

SoSock said...

Youk > Fed Ex, UPS, & DHL combined

Redeem thyself JD

tim said...

!DJ ECIN

Rob said...

Youk using the sweaty brass balls going first to third!

Jere said...

good job Drew. Somebody hit a big dong please

Unknown said...

Can we have Youk play first and second at the same time and have him bat twice in the lineup?

Benjamin said...

Double, double play, play.

allan said...

homre?

SoSock said...

And so he does!

tim said...

Glad this isn't as lively as the July game will be. Hopefully my voice will have recovered by then...

Jere said...

I was gonna say what you guys said about Drew atoning/redeeming, but his error didn't lead to a run, so does it still count as atonement?

Benjamin said...

Bay looks like Canadian Smurf in this uniform.

tim said...

WTF

Unknown said...

DON'T WASTE THIS!!

Benjamin said...

How was he out?

Benjamin said...

Bleh.

allan said...

off thebag

SoSock said...

I see run(s)!
WTH just happened?

tim said...

Apparently barrel rolling at 1b is legit now.

tim said...

FUCK YAAAA TIE GAME!!!!!WOOOOOOO!

Benjamin said...
