G9: Red Sox 8, Athletics 2

Red Sox - 020 000 060 - 8 10 1
Athletics - 000 000 011 - 2 4 0
Wakefield pitched 7.1 no-hit innings and went the distance for his 31st career complete game. After the pen was spent after Tuesday night, Wakefield did exactly what the Red Sox needed.

Mike Lowell hit a two-run home run in the second inning. His fielding error to start the sixth ruined Wakefield's shot at a perfect game. For the first seven innings, Wakefield's pitch count was ridiculously low: 30 through 5 innings, 54 through 6, 67 through 7. He began to tire at that point, allowing six base runners (and two runs) over the last two innings and throwing 44 pitches. He finished with a 9-4-2-2-4, 111 line.

Eight consecutive Red Sox batters reached base after two were out in the eighth inning. J.D. Drew's three-run dong broke the game open, giving Boston a 5-0 lead.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. Left-handed reliever Hunter Jones has been summoned from Pawtucket and may arrive at the park during today's game.

Terry Francona, after speaking with trainer Mike Reinhold this morning:
I don't think there's an injury. It just looks like there's some fatigue. Kind of like last year, where he's got to build it back up and feel good about himself.
***

Tim Wakefield (4.50, 113 ERA+) / Brett Anderson (7.50, 60 ERA+)

Another game in Oakland, another young lefty.

BP 2009:
... it looks as if Anderson will turn out to be the best player brought to Oakland in the [Haren] exchange. The son of a pitching coach, he was the most polished pitcher in the Arizona system as a teenager, but scouts were always turned off by his dumpy, unathletic frame. Last spring, he came to camp 25 to 30 pounds lighter and took another step forward because of it, with his low-90s fastball grading up because of its excellent movement and location. Unlike most pitchers his age [21], Anderson has advanced secondary offerings and an excellent feel for his craft. He's moving up rapidly, could be in Oakland by the end of the year, and has All-Star potential.
Wakefield needs to go at least six innings, as the bullpen pitched 10.2 innings last night and most of the relievers went multiple innings, including Justin Masterson (4 innings, 60 pitches), Manny Delcarmen (1.2, 36), Hideki Okajima (2, 28). Also, Javier Lopez has pitched in each of the last three games.

Who's available? Takashi Saito was the only reliever to not work yesterday. Jonathan Papelbon did not pitch on Sunday or Monday and threw only 16 pitches last night. Ramon Ramirez would be the third guy, I suppose. Can Chris Carter pitch?

Win or lose this afternoon, the day off on Thursday will be most welcome.

BASEBALL GODS HELP US.

allan said...

Bumping this back up above the two things I posted later.

Tito's quotes on WEEI talking about Dice and Beckett.

Jere said...

Dice-K's on the DL officially. Don't know if anyone's mentioned this.

mattymatty said...

Matsuzaka was just placed on the DL. It's hard to place the blame solely on the WBC, but it's hard not to notice the tournament's potential roll in any injury as well.

So, we're 2-6, we lost our number one starter to a BS suspension, our number three starter to some as yet to be disclosed injury, and our starting shortstop to on-going wrist problems which may require surgery and could keep him out indefinitely. Other than August of '06, it's hard to remember a worse month than this.

Jere said...

We aren't exactly "losing" Beckett, though.

Jere said...

Jackie Robinson. His number will never be worn again.

(Except by everybody.)

laura k said...

Stupid west coast games, even the day games mess me up. I'll have to leave after a few innings.

If patterns hold, that should mean a W for Boston.

Anonymous said...

"Stupid west coast games" Not here in AK, all the west coast games are televised here and it rocks

Jere said...

Timlin on NESN by phone talking about Dice-K and the WBC. TC asks if he'll come back and play if he gets a phone call. Timlin: "If I get a call that's worth taking, I'll sit with my wife and we'll pray about it, and see what god says." I'm VERY interested in what that holier-than-thou motherfucker thinks about which team would be worthwhile for Mike.

Zenslinger said...

If Timlin were to come back now, it would be the fans' turn to start praying.

allan said...

MT: So, God, what should I do?

G: Go kill a bunch of animals for no reason except that it's fun to kill stuff, then sign with the Yankees.

allan said...

allan said...

Say, was Timlin calling from Iraq where he's busy fighting for freedom?

allan said...

Fuck. Fucking off to a great fucking start:

Glen Kuiper and Ray Fucking Fosse -- afuckinggain.

Fuck.

Jere said...

He was calling from "Colorado." (In his mountain bunker prepared for Obama to come and make him pay like 2% more in taxes?)

I still don't have the new NESN Red Sox theme firmly in my brain, but it's guaranteed to happen soon and I'll wonder how I ever didn't know it.

allan said...

... and take his guns.

allan said...

I believe I was using the wrong pen to score with this week. I have changed and things should be fine now. Sorry about that.

Jere said...

no 4-3, Jacoby

Jere said...

Did you find a finer point?

allan said...

i do have the .20 mm point, but am using the next size up.

Jere said...

This is really gonna affect the all-time uniform number list.

They just showed that angle of last night's play. The guy's toe MAY have touched the front of the bag, but his foot was definitely flat on the ground.

Benjamin said...

Hey look the Sox are retired in order.

Jere said...

Does every guy have his number removed and a new one sewn on? Or do they make up dozens of extra uniforms for one day? Eh, probably the latter for future auction purposes.

Jere said...

Wake OTT

allan said...

Wake on pace for a 54-pitch CG.

Zenslinger said...

6-pitch inning. Yay.

God, we need Wake to be good today. And go eight innings.

laura k said...

Hello. Allan said it was just him and Jere so I'm saying hi.

laura k said...

Then right after I do, other people appear. Never mind.

allan said...

So MLB has gone from players choosing to wear 42 to making it mandatory?

Jere said...

At least this year it is. All uniformed personel--HOME RUN!

allan said...

RX!

nixon33 said...

wow runs. what are they?

Jere said...

buck!

Rob said...

Doc knows how to make us feel better.

Jere said...

OnePitchOut

allan said...

GDGD has the 2 pitches to Lowell as a 82 fastball and a 83 changeup.

?

Jere said...

Good job by Youk to make the tag there.

Rob said...

The umpires are all wearing #42 also. Good play by Youk to save Green's bacon there!

I love the way the knuckler's moving. Dipping down low.

Jere said...

One pitch out again! OTT, this time on, what, five pitches?

Rob said...

Don't worry, Allan. Wake's still throwing 60-65.

Castig: "Whatever happened to the Moneyball theory of taking pitches?"

Benjamin said...

Shit, Wakefield's raised his pitch count to 7/inning.

Rob said...

I love looking at his pitch count as a trend. Went from being on pace for 45 pitch complete game to... What, 54?

Jere said...

At Fenway this year, the Aramark vendors wear numbers on their backs. I wonder if they'll all wear 42 if this game's at home next year. And every seat, row, and section could be #42!

Unknown said...

Wow, I need to start missing the first two innings more often.

Jere said...

Easy groundout by....#42

Rob said...

42 comments! Was...

Benjamin said...

Both those pitches had the same break.

Jere said...

What did I say about not grounding to second Jacoby!?

Jere said...

OTT

Rob said...

It took over an hour to get past 2.5 innings last night. Today it takes 25 minutes.

Jere said...

(Wallace Matthews looks at watch disgustedly.)

allan said...

and jere beats me to the matthews comment.

("Man i hate these long dragged out wake starts.")

Benjamin said...

Get well soon, Dustin. We miss you.

Benjamin said...

Crap, Suzuki used up 4 pitches there.

Jere said...

I think Ortiz, Ellsbury, Drew, and Pedroia have "arm fatigue."

allan said...

hey tim, could you do this every start?

Unknown said...

I'm liking this game.

Jere said...

that was a fine catch by Ellsb.

Jere said...

wow, an ad for women's football

Zenslinger said...

GDGD says 23 pitches for Wake...18 of them strikes. Damn.

allan said...

bat fatigue

Benjamin said...

Take a fucking pitch.

Jere said...

but foul balls don't count, so....

Rob said...

Youk's back up to .500

Jere said...

Yoooouk with a ripped single.

Jere said...

Well, either Bay's sleeve logo has been re-positioned, or these are all new uniforms with 42s on them. Another thing pointing to the fact that these are probably new.

Rob said...

I'm pretty sure they're new unis.

allan said...

very nice to see both teams with no names on the backs.

Jere said...

Oh that's right, the names are gone--yet another thing pointing to new unis. Since the letters are directly sewn on, no nameplate.

Jere said...

another easy and quick out for Wake.

Amy said...

Wow, I am on a quick break before I have to go back and teach tonight. AND THE SOX ARE AHEAD! WOW!

I love Wakefield.

Timlin---please, God, keep him away from baseball, or at least away from the Red Sox.

Rob said...

Okay, my turn. Another quick out by Wake!

Jere said...

Tito: It's a little embarassing to pat yourself on the back for treatin' everybody equal.

Great play by Green going to his right.

Rob said...

Amy, the way this game is going it'll probably be over before you have to leave! This one's a swift-mover.

Rob said...

Wow! Another quick inning!

Rob said...

Jere I loved that Tito said that.

Benjamin said...

Loving Wake so far today.

allan said...

thru 4 innings, wake has thrown 10 fewer pitches than dice did last night

Amy said...

Yay, Wake! A pitcher who hasn't blown the lead! Poo, poo, poo. (Jewish thing you say to ward off the evil eye after commenting on lack of bad news.)

Unknown said...

10 pitch innings make me happy :)

Jere said...

"the way this game is going"

ah, but the game can change quickly...but lets' hope.

Jere said...

let apostrophe s

Rob said...

MFY FKR just underway. Top 1st.

Jere said...

Yeah that was a great call by Tito

Rob said...

ah, but the game can change quickly...but lets' hope. Can and usually does.

laura k said...

Stopping in to say bye. It's Wednesday... I have to go resist some war. And drink some beer.

I hope when I come home everyone is happy about the nice win today.

allan said...

can someone take a vhs of this game and show it to dice?

Zenslinger said...

According to Gameday, no fastballs or curves from Wakefield. All knucklers.

Amy said...

Ish, unfortunately I have to leave by 5 and eat first, so I highly doubt I will see the end of the game, but I can listen in the car on the way to school and check the computer when I get there. Class starts at 6:30.

allan said...

lowell's speed still not back to 100%

allan said...

gdgd has always done that for wake. for years. it's annoying

Rob said...

That ball was less than a foot from being gone! At first glance.

Amy said...

Yes! A bat makes good contact!

allan said...

douuble

Rob said...

I was sad Kottaras didn't get his first MLB homre.

Jere said...

Very good point by Kim: Just put a 42 patch on everybody's sleeve.

Kottararism

Jere said...

JE 0 for 3

Unknown said...

I'd really like it if Lyndon would get more than one hit every other game.

Rob said...

Good morning, Good afternoon, Good night.

Jere said...

individual panned OTT

Jere said...

two kwik outz

Rob said...

That's two throwing errors by Green saved by Youk.

Rob said...

6 pitch 5th inning!

Jere said...

five kwik-e mart innings

allan said...

Wake PC: 6-7-10 10-6 = 39

!!!

Unknown said...

6 pitch OTT

I'm really liking this game.

Jere said...

I see my least fave Amstel Light ad is back for more in '09

Zenslinger said...

Total pitches through five innings is 39...the projections are coming true!

Amy said...

Wake is making all our young pup pitchers look pathetic. I mean, I know he throws knuckleballs, not power or finesse pitches. But still...he is at least steady at the helm.

allan said...

only one 2-ball count for wake

Amy said...

It'd be nice to give him some more run support.

allan said...

A's TV just tried the ol' jinx.

39 pitches, 31 strikes?!?!?!?

Rob said...

Well Tito's getting his wish. Wake going deep.

nixon33 said...

:0

Amy said...

OK, I have to go dress to teach (ugh), eat crap, and teach my class. Keep them baffled, Wake!!

Jere said...

There's nothing wrong with any pitch, provided you know how to use it.

I really do hope a start like this calms down the "he and his softball pitch should just retire already" talk a little.

Rob said...

Are we going to see the first walk of the game?

Pepe Lepew said...

Just got it. Looks like Wake is dealing.
C'mon boys, time to start winning.

Jere said...

OCab may have thought that was the 3rd out.

allan said...

At the one hour mark now!

Rob said...

Games like this feel so tenuous. Like a twig could snap and all of a sudden it turns into a grinder.

allan said...

Dealing?

He's throwing so good, 1999 Pedro would shake his head and say "Holy Shit!"

Rob said...

Perfect game fail.

Jere said...

Easy play lolligagged by Lowell for the E.

allan said...

way to fuck it up, dr.

Rob said...

Ooooooh. Rang the bell!

Jere said...

What is this, Nazi Germany?

allan said...

The Kottaras-ette may have to go solo tonight.

Rob said...

Lmao.

Jere said...

Of all people, I can't believe Lowell Lugo'd this perfect game.

allan said...

Stade Fasciste

Jere said...

Kottaresse?

Rob said...

I hope NYPD and the Yankees get HOSED for that one.

Rob said...

Shows you just how hard it is to get a perfect game. Your fielders have to make all the plays.

Unknown said...

Wake ignores the error and keeps himself on the Fuck Train.

Benjamin said...

54 through six.

Rob said...

I give Lowell a pass on that E though. He did hit the dong that is the extent of Boston's scoring today.

Jere said...

I always think, when I don't remove my hat for the anthem, of how I can remind any "love it or leave it" types, if they say anything, that this is a "free" country. But I never thought cops would be able to actually do something about it--and then give the "love it or leave it" line as they're forcibly throwing me out. Scary.

Rob said...

Jere did you notice any of the usual fan movement restrictions when you were at the New Toilet?

Zenslinger said...

I think we might be able to say that the Fuck Train has not missed a beat.

Rob said...

And fuck the use of the word, fan. A fan reaches over to catch a ball and a fan has himself a souvenir but people are being restricted from moving during GBA and the anthem.

Zenslinger said...

Give Anderson some credit...has pitched very, very well.

Jere said...

I was in the last row of the upper deck (now called "grandstand"), so I wasn't near the runways. You know who should've gotten removed, is the guy who was playing Mario Bros. 3 in the first inning of the first game at new Yankee Stadium.

Benjamin said...

IBB Lowell? Hilarious.

Pepe Lepew said...

Oh, Bay!

Unknown said...

Alright Green, make them regret that.

Jere said...

A's rooting against green here

Rob said...

You know who should've gotten removed, is the guy who was playing Mario Bros. 3 in the first inning of the first game at new Yankee Stadium. • See that's why the NYPD shouldn't be wasting their time on people having a wee during GBA. These are the real disgraces to Our Game.

Rob said...

A one-sided grinder has emerged.

Jere said...

haha, another walk

Benjamin said...

How can you get tossed for pissing at the Toilet?

allan said...

Kot: Make Canada proud!

Pepe Lepew said...

Those Red Sox are lousy with Canadians. Kinda like the Cubs.

Rob said...

Good point, Benjamin! Haha that made me laugh in my empty room.

Jere said...

you can't spell George Kottarasndlm without grand slam

Rob said...

That's one way to clear the bases and return to our Regularly Scheduled Programming.

allan said...

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Zenslinger said...

C'mon, Snack Fly at least.

Jere said...

George, you at least could have run out of the box to avoid getting doubled up.

Benjamin said...

I hate seeing "out(s)" when we have the bases loaded.

Rob said...

2-0 pitch was a fastball.

Grant Salzano said...

Well this is certainly intriguing...

Rob said...

He's throwing 68 now. His best knucklers were 62.

Rob said...

70 mph on that 3-2.

Jere said...

one out

Grant Salzano said...

Whew...

Rob said...

Yeah those last four pitches to O-Cab were fastballs. Back to the knucklers.

Grant Salzano said...

I am aloling at the filthiness of that pitch

Grant Salzano said...

HE DID NOT

Jere said...

holy S!!!!

allan said...

And right after the OCab AB, the A's YV guys are insisting that Wakefield has thrown nothing but knucks!

GREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jere said...

woohooooooooooo

Grant Salzano said...

That was stunning =-O

Rob said...

WHOA!!!!!!! Nick Green! That was awesome! Your bacon has been saved twice but you saved Wakefield's bacon!

Red Sox radio not exactly...traditional. Castig's already looking into his Bagel history book.

Benjamin said...

67 through seven.

nixon33 said...

OMG

Unknown said...

OTT

Rob said...

And right after the OCab AB, the A's YV guys are insisting that Wakefield has thrown nothing but knucks! • Yeah Rish and Castig called them knucklers too.

Benjamin said...

Blevins has the Lopez angle going on his GDGD photo.

Rob said...

When Green made that fantastic catch Wakefield put both arms up and smiled.

Grant Salzano said...

I still can't believe that catch happened =-O

Rob said...

Since everyone's wearing 42 when Green went back I thought he was Pedroia. Then he got up and I said... WHOA! GREEEN!

allan said...

6 little outs to go

6 huge outs to go

Rob said...

67... 50 strikes.

Zenslinger said...

What did Green do...catch up to a bloop in shallow OF?

Jere said...

think about sliding, Papi

Rob said...

First extra-base hit! Heh Tiz didn't slide, it's like he deeked them out!

Rob said...

That was a strange play.

Zenslinger said...

Never mind, I can watch it on GDGD!

Jere said...

just a single, Youk. I mean, Drew.

Pepe Lepew said...

Does Holliday get up again?

Rob said...

What did Green do...catch up to a bloop in shallow OF? • Yeah he did. Caught it over the shoulder across his body, he was moving one way and had to move his glove the other way before falling down.

Rob said...

Castig using all the words we don't traditionally use in games like these.

Zenslinger said...

Rays get two off of Pettite in the 3rd, 2-0.

Benjamin said...

MFYs losing 2-0.

Jere said...

actually Castig is the traditional one--it's only lately that "not saying it on air: thing started. Remy did mention it before this inning, too.

Rob said...

FIREBALL! Dong!

Benjamin said...

!

allan said...

FIRESTARTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grant Salzano said...

Just one thing to focus on now, folks.
