G70: Red Sox 11, Nationals 3

Red Sox - 010 110 161 - 11 17 0
Nationals - 100 101 000 - 3 8 1
... and a tight, see-saw game became a laugher in a ten-batter eighth inning, thanks to two-RBI hits from both Jason Bay and Jacoby Ellsbury.

Those two guys were also the offensive stars of the game. Bay went 4-for-6, with three singles and his 19th home run (capping off a nine-pitch AB in the second), three runs scored and three RBI. Ellsbury was 4-for-4, with two singles, two triples, one walk, three RBI and a stolen base. He scored only one run, but was stranded at third two other times.

Dustin Pedroia had two doubles and a single and Kevin Youkilis had two hits, two runs and two RBI. ... The Red Sox scored at least one run of each of the six Washington pitchers.

Penny (5.2-6-3-3-6, 112) had trouble with two-out hits in the first and sixth innings and all three of his walks came in the fourth inning, but he was able to get out of jams when he needed to. Daniel Bard loaded the bases with one out in the ninth (a walk and two singles), but got a 3-6-1 DP from Nick Johnson to end the game.

Atlanta shutout the Yankees 4-0, so Boston is 5 GA in the East -- their biggest lead since September 15, 2007.

***

I forgot to mention: The Nats Can't Spell.

Winn.

***

Brad Penny (4.94, 95 ERA+) / John Lannan (3.38, 129 ERA+)

In nine starts since May 3, Penny has a 3.71 ERA over 53.1 innings -- and has not allowed an earned run in his last 11 innings of work.

With Daisuke Matsuzaka out of action for the foreseeable future and John Smoltz's health still a question mark, it seems unlikely (even with Clay Buchholz in Pawtucket and Justin Masterson's ability to rejoin the rotation) that the Red Sox will be trading Penny.

Lannan is a 24-year-old lefty in his second full season with Washington. He had a 3.91 ERA (112 ERA+) in 31 starts last year. In his last four outings this season, he has gone 28.1-17-10-15, with a 1.91 ERA.

Lannan grew up on Long Island and rooted for the Yankees. In his last start, he tossed 8.1 innings in a 3-2 win over the New Yorkers in the Bronx. What does he think about facing the rival Red Sox?
Not a big deal. I wasn't really into the whole Yankees-Red Sox thing. I liked the Yankees, but I didn't hate the Red Sox. ... Before that rivalry really heated up.
Lannan says he stopped going to games in 2000 and never saw the Red Sox play at Yankee Stadium.

****

Over in Yankeeland, Bob Klapisch says Joe Girardi is "entering a critical phase of his managerial career". Given Girardi's history of overworking his players, Klapisch wonders about CC Sabathia, who was pulled from his start on Sunday in the second inning with tenderness in his left biceps.

That injury comes after Sabathia pitched at least seven innings for eight straight starts (May 8 to June 16) -- and after he led the major leagues in innings pitched and batters faced in both 2007 and 2008.

The Yankees -- 4 GB -- are in Atlanta tonight. The Blue Jays are 5 GB and the Rays are 6 GB.

Dave Roberts mentioning Kip Wells...Kip Wells hasn't been relevant since I cheated to make him a good player in one of my baseball games for the Wii.

L-girl said...

I just said to Allan, Kip Wells! Players go to the NL and it's like they drop off the face of the earth.

For me, that is. I so wish I didn't see the NL until October.

Kip Wells reminds me of the brother of Memphis/Randall Raines from Gone in 60 seconds. I think his name was Kip. Someone's name was Kip.

Ish said...

I love the Red Sox fans showing up in big numbers at other parks... It's great when it's your team that it's happening to.

Not so fun when it's say... Montreal Canadiens fans invading the Boston Garden.

Ish said...

I do not know what Canadian Content means. Maybe it's some mounty-on-mounty action?

That was 9 out of 9 inherited runners Colome has allowed to score!!!

Pepe Lepew said...

media here has to have a certain amount of canadian-produced or canadian-themed content, in order to get licenses, etc.

I remember when I lived in NW Washington, the only radio you could get was from Vancouver or Victoria and there was some requirement that 40 percent of the music had to be Canadian artists.
That meant a lot of Hip.
A LOT of Hip.

redsock said...

colome - he's perfect!

andy said...

What the fuck is Hip?

redsock said...

it's better not to know.

L-girl said...

i was wondering if anyone would ask what is hip

i have to stop threading to eat ice cream

andy said...

Your word taken.

Pepe Lepew said...

What the fuck is Hip?

The Tragically Hip.
The hip people call them Hip or The Hip.

redsock said...

guess what i call them?

:>)

Gambrinus said...

As much as I love the Sox piling it on, I can't help but think this would all be more impressive team if it were against some team other than the Washington Nationals.

I guess it helps if I think of them as the YANKEE KILLING Washington Nationals.

andy said...

Down here it's groovy.

vrictare said...

Sean Casey Update: He just finished his Chewbacca impression.

I am completely serious.

andy said...

I hope they find a cure for Hip.

Pepe Lepew said...

The big down side to The Hip is that basically if you've heard one Hip song ... you've more or less heard them all. (ducks from Hip fans)

redsock said...

don't duck, i think i have banned all Hip fans.

andy said...

MASSN just said that NESN used 21 different analysts during this time without remy.

Pepe Lepew said...

don't duck, i think i have banned all Hip fans.

I do like "New Orleans is Sinking"
But that song about the guy on the '62 Leafs whose body they found in the wilderness ... ugh.

andy said...

And their tense is off.

B.R. said...

Obviously Iam a Yankees fan...but as I have said to other fans that I work with the past week or so....the difference between the Yanks and the Sox these days, and the past few years is that the Sox win the games they are supposed to win....grit out victories, and pretty much meet expectations. Iam not going to sit here and say I hate the Yankees, or that I give up because that would be pathetic...but I am truly sick of Girardi...I think he is a horrible manager, and I think for my team this season, it will be Wild Card or nothing. I cannot see the Yankees overcoming the Red Sox to win the AL East....this is a realistic fan speaking, not someone throwing in the towel. It's just plain frustrating.

redsock said...

21?

can you get their list?

andy said...

Was that yankees announcement random or was that the conversation so far?

Ish said...

21?? Maybe they meant 21 analyst changes...

andy said...

I don't know where he gets his info. He is basically full of shit.

redsock said...

random.

andy said...

Yeah it's the only possible way ish.

andy said...

MASSN = full of shit
random yankees fan = priceless.

B.R. said...

Clearly random, but it does allow me to vent. I am a Yankees fan who enjoys this blog...I read it regularly...so this isn't a one time stop by

andy said...

Not really priceless.

Why do people feel the need to be accepted by the cool crowd so much that they come profess their love for their rivals whilst trashing their own team?

L-girl said...

Tim is a big Hip fan I think. He's not banned.

redsock said...

is gary thorne on masn - telling lies about curt's sock?

Pepe Lepew said...

Oops, sorry, they found his body in the wilderness in '62.
Anyway, I despise that song.
And they played it on Canadian radio a hundred thousand billion times.
That is not an exaggeration.

andy said...

Bye tim.

L-girl said...

Andy, it is strange indeed. We get this occasionally, from various ppl. I wonder how many Sox fans show up on Yankees blogs and make pronouncements abt the season.

Ish said...

B.R. from baseball fan to baseball fan here, I offer my condolences to you and your team for their struggles. Seriously.

However, from a Red Sox fan to a Yankee fan I say.... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. HA!

I hope you understand.

Your friend,
Ish

vrictare said...

Dustin Pedroia frowns on your silly definitions of "single" "strike zone" and "swing".

xD

andy said...

I do not believe this is Thorne. I think he just does the O's right?

redsock said...

bard up

girardi would drive me to drink too

...

drink more that is.

johngoldfine said...

Gary Thorne--home town boy--we get to read his weekly column in the Bangor (Maine) Daily News.

Pepe Lepew said...

Hey, Pedroia a double. I guess we're actually playing baseball, here.

L-girl said...

Allan set off a bit of a media firestorm calling out Thorne on B/S spew

andy said...

It's so sad watching a complete failure try to maintain his composure at all times in the media spotlight. There is no shade for a ridiculously bad coach.

redsock said...

O's, right. I was just thinking the network.

He remains a douche, however.

Pepe Lepew said...

I know Gary Thorne is a bald-faced liar, but he is actually a very, very good hockey announcer.

Ish said...

Just as I read the name "Gary Thorne" on here, Dave said something about somebody being a thorn in somebody's side. Timing. Classic.

Gary Thorne is an example of, yes he's from Maine and I'm from Maine but it's still far away. Hartford is closer to me than Bangor is.

andy said...

Well Allan I have to ask you a clarifying question. Is he the douche bag or the contents of said bag?

SoSock said...

Hooty-hoo!
There is no stopping these guys lately, is there?
LOVE IT!
And ya gotta love those Nats - sweeping the Yanks before letting us come in to pummel them.
nice

Ish said...

Youk loves that low fastball.

L-girl said...

from a see-saw to insurance to a laugher

L-girl said...

Andy you are priceless

johngoldfine said...

We don't even consider your end of the state as in Maine, ish--you know that!

SoSock said...

Yook doubles in a run, yawn.

L-girl said...

you mainers

redsock said...

i guess thorne is the bag and his words are the inner stuff

Ish said...

Johngoldfine, don't I know it!

There are a couple of neighborhoods in my town that I call York, MA.

SoSock said...

Bay's ready to go home.

L-girl said...

JohnGoldFine, did you see you the post re JoS1? There is still one ticket available...

andy said...

I'm getting my USA map.

B.R. said...

Andy, I wasn't trashing my team, merely voicing my frustration....I have MLBTV so I was switching between the two games and just was perplexed how the Yankees looked seemingly lost against Lannan, but the Sox seem to have had no issues hitting him. A-Rod has to have something wrong with him, and it's like he is a black hole pulling the offense down with him. When Papi wasn't hitting, the Sox won 11 in a row....so to me it's simple....the Red Sox are a better ballclub then the Yankees....

Pepe Lepew said...

Youk! Pile on!

andy said...

What part of Maine are you from ish?

Ish said...

Actually I think Thorne is from Brunswick which is about 70 minutes north.

redsock said...

what are the jays doing?

B.R. said...

SoSock: "And ya gotta love those Nats - sweeping the Yanks"

Hey, c'mon now...we did win 1 game, no sweep.

Ish said...

Andy I am at the very southern tip of the state.

Pepe Lepew said...

Andy I am at the very southern tip of the state.

GHW Bush country! :)

Ish said...

Losing 2 of 3 to the Nats really is like getting swept though.

Wonder what it's like to actually get swepted, then.

redsock said...

ML debut for brown

Benjamin said...

It's great that the overwhelming majority of the fans in attendance are loving this outcome.

L-girl said...

Dusty Brown! Yeah, we love his name. It's our dog... whose name is Cody. Hard to explain.

johngoldfine said...

Kind of you to mention it, Laura, but I'm getting back from Iceland that afternoon and will be in no condition to watch anything but the Maine Turnpike as I head from Hub to home.

Benjamin said...

Losing 2 of 3 to the Nats really is like getting swept though.

Especially at home.

Ish said...

Pepe.. Please no! Haha.

Andy, find Portsmouth NH and go about 9 miles into Maine and I'm in there somewhere.

LJCohen said...

gotta let the hounds out. . . see ya later good peoples.

Pepe Lepew said...

It's great that the overwhelming majority of the fans in attendance are loving this outcome.

It's like the two times I went to see the Red Sox in Safeco. The Red Sox fans totally outnumbered the Mariner fans.

andy said...

Ok sir. When the yankees are winning during there customary second half hot streak, come back here and much better then the Sox are. If you can do that and keep doing it throughout the other custom, losing out to the Red Sox, I will believe you are not a Gary Thorne.

SoSock said...

Oops, you're right. No sweep.
Just living in la-la land I guess.

redsock said...

do you guys know lake flagstaff in maine?

B.R. said...

Andy-Deal!

I am not a fair weather fan. Also, I am not one of those Yankees fans that comes here, talks shit, starts fights and ducks out for 4 weeks. I read this blog everyday.....as I've said before, it's one of the more concise baseball blogs I have found....it's just a little weird that it's a Red Sox blog. Unless the Yankees solidify their bullpen, ARod hits, and Posada starts playing like a catcher and not a quarterback/double play machine, then yes...I really think the Sox are a better team then the Yankees

Pepe Lepew said...

Dusty Brown's salary is $0 according to ESPN.com

SoSock said...

So if the pitcher does not throw strikes now, are they Dusty Balls?

9casey said...

Why does Manny get to play in A ball when his suspension isn't supposed to end until July 3.....were does the A-ball player go before he comes back from suspension, back to High School......

johngoldfine said...

Have you fished there, redsock?

L-girl said...

Iceland! Nice. A fine excuse. ;)

Pepe Lepew said...

do you guys know lake flagstaff in maine?

I've been to Flagstaff, Ariz., and my kid spent a week there this month looking for comets.

redsock said...

we had a deer hunting camp nearby, went on vacation there in the buggy summers and deer hutning in november.

this would be 72-77 or so.

I think LBJ is hitting .520 with a .740 obp since redsock had that post about him....

L-girl said...

"were does the A-ball player go before he comes back from suspension, back to High School......"

that would be funny. so manny is not supposed to be playing this minor league game?

SoSock said...

My Tarheel boy is not showing his stuff at the moment......I hope

L-girl said...

did they see any comets?

johngoldfine said...

I suppose I could race over from the airport--with my giant knapsack they won't let me carry into the park, wearing my disgusting unwashed clothes (good enough for the plane, but nothing I'd inflict on 40,000 RS fans....)

redsock said...

i should check ...

and then post about every player ....

L-girl said...

let's get this over with already. two outs. let's go.

Pepe Lepew said...

did they see any comets?

Yes, they did. They discovered one while she was there. It was quite to do.
She said if she found one herself she would name it after the cat.
"And in the year 2011, Earth was annihilated by...
... Comet Murph."

johngoldfine said...

That's the real Maine, as they say, redsock.

Benjamin said...

WATER

Ish said...

I have no idea where Lake Flagstaff is. What town is it near?

Hey wow! It's over! Snuck up on me there.

Dirty governmental water.

L-girl said...

just what we needed!

dirty water with gnats in it

Pepe Lepew said...

Daniel Bard isn't really doing that great at the moment.

Pepe Lepew said...

Oh, wait...
.... damn, I'm slow...

Ish said...

If I've never heard of the place it definitely is the real Maine.

L-girl said...

oh very cool about the comets! must have been a great experience.

g'night all. i have another day of mom ahead of me tomorrow. this one will be easier b/c allan is joining us. whew.

kind of in the middle of the state, if i recall. we also hiked on bigelow mountain nearby. the appalachian trail was also close by.

i know we drive through mexico and rumford on the way there.

my father's father built the camp in 1947 or so. i was last there in 1984. i doubt it is still standing.

Ish said...

Johngoldfine - gotcha! No wonder I've never heard of it. I've never been to NW Maine. Furthest north and west was Bethel. Then farther north I've been to Portage and Ashland.

My father grew up in Limestone and used to go hunting in the woods of NW Maine. Very very NW.

SoSock said...

Damn I'm glad this is over.
Attic job today, then practice till 9, then worked on a couple of the mounds for almost an hour.
I'm way overdue for a shower!

Ish said...

I would like to visit more of Maine. I haven't seen very much of it side-to-side even though I've lived here all my life. Pretty much only traveled up and down 95. I've never been downeast except for Ellsworth and Bar Harbor when I was tiny and my brain was a walnut.
