G77: Orioles 11, Red Sox 10

Red Sox - 220 500 100 - 10 16 0
Orioles - 001 000 55x - 11 16 1
That is not a typo.

Who could have guessed when the rain was falling in the middle of the fifth with Boston up 9-1 we should have wished the game would have been wiped out?

As surprising and annoying as this one was, it's still only one loss -- and we come right back with Josh Beckett tomorrow afternoon.

***

Playing ball again after a 1:11 delay. Masterson in.

***

Rain delay at 8:36 at end of top of fifth. Baltimore needs to finish the bottom half for the game to be official.

So far, the Red Sox bats have been raining down hurt on the Orioles:
Lugo: 2 hits, 2 runs
Pedroia: 2-run double
Yook: HR, double, single, 3 RBI, 2 runs
Ortiz: double, RBI single
Ellsbury: RBI single and solo HR (moon shot crushed to rcf)
Bailey: single, 2 runs
Smoltz: 4-3-1-1-2, 52.

***

UPDATE: It turns out the Red Sox will not wait until Thursday before making a decision about Mike Lowell. The team put Lowell on the 15-day disabled list today (retroactive to June 28) and called up Jeff Bailey.

***

John Smoltz (9.00, 51 ERA+) / Rich Hill (6.03, 75 ERA+)

Look for more fastballs tonight from John Smoltz. John Farrell:
It could have been that it was his first time back and he didn't know what to expect velocity-wise. I'd like to see the ability to pitch off his fastball more.
In addition to giving Mike Lowell an injection of Synvisc in his right hip*, the Red Sox medical staff drained 15 ccs of fluid from the area. Lowell could return to the lineup as soon as Friday, but, as Terry Francona said, "the worst-case scenario, he goes on the DL just to buy us a couple of weeks where he can get a second wind for the second part of the season."

(*: If Lowell could not play without getting this injection, wouldn't it qualify (broadly-speaking) as a performance-enhancing drug? Of course, this drug is legal and allowed by MLB. But it clearly helps the player better perform his job. And if Lowell's hitting and fielding are superior having had the injection, hasn't his performance been enhanced?) Am I totally off-base?

Lowell:
If I don't have a big improvement in mobility and flexibility and all of that I have to believe their going to think of something DL-wise, but if I feel really good I might play Friday. So Thursday is probably the day we chart what's going on.
Francona said that Jacoby Ellsbury could be back in the leadoff spot "in the future", but for now J.D. Drew and Dustin Pedroia "are our two best on-base guys and since Ellsbury's been hitting seventh, he's just been (doing great), and we've been playing great baseball."

Drew, on his eighth-inning at-bat last night:
There's not a player alive who wouldn't know he needed a double for the cycle in that situation. I was trying to hit a double. [And how do you do that?] I don't know ... I was just going to hit the ball and run straight to second.
Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 132nd save last night, tying Bob Stanley for the Red Sox's all-time mark. Bot again expressed his awe for Mariano Rivera and his latest milestone:
A (four)-out save for 500 is pretty neat. And an RBI. That's the icing on the cake. Just seeing what Mo did is absolutely incredible. ... He's "The Godfather" of our role ... You're talking about a guy who has 500 saves and has been through countless postseasons. When you're just aching day in and day out -- I don't know, man. ...
Steve Buckley notes that "when Rivera was Papelbon's age, he had 84 career saves". That was 11 years ago. Can Papelbon still be closing games in 2020, at age 39?

Jason Bay is 1-for-13 in his past three games.

Orioles starter Hill has been highly erratic this season and hasn't completed five innings in four of his last six starts.

I'm so out of it, I mistook DSL for wireless! Gawd!

I did throw out all my old New Yorkers after saving them for over 25 years. I just could not justify carting them from one place to another.

I probably should have sold them on Ebay. Goodwill would not take magazines, just books, so I just dumped (recycled) them.

allan said...

meant to say earlier i should up some mccartney stuff for amy, but i'm not sure she'd know what to do with it. :>)

Benjamin said...

Meanwhile, the FKRs are back to scaring the shit out of me.

gumball chuggin'

Gumball's still playing to win.

What McCartney stuff? No teasing me. :)

(b) If the pitcher whose team assumes a lead while such pitcher is in the game, or during the inning on offense in which such pitcher is removed from the game, and does not relinquish such lead, is a starting pitcher who has not completed
(1) five innings of a game that lasts six or more innings on defense, or
(2) four innings of a game that lasts five innings on defense,
then the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the relief pitcher, if there is only one relief pitcher, or the relief pitcher who, in the official scorer’s judgment was the most effective, if there is more than one relief pitcher.

From the MLB rulebook. So Masterson will now get the win

Benjamin said...

Bailey's third career triple. Jere would have a pun for that.

allan said...

i can't be bothered to read that. is it carved in stone?

Do you think lawyers drafted the official baseball rules? That reads like the tax code or worse.

s1c said...

Yes Sock, carved in stone.

Easiest win that donkey will ever get.

Am I the only one who thinks McCartney never did squat after "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey"?
See, if I said that to my friend, she would quite literally claw my eyes out and show them to me before I die.

I am mostly a Beatles fan, not a Wings fan, so basically anything from the beginning through 1970.

I saw him in 2002 in NYC. We sat almost behind the stage, but it was worth it. My daughter heard that he was coming to Fenway and somehow pulled strings to get tix before they were on sale to the public. She figured Paul + Fenway = happy happy Mom!

Benjamin said...

Pedroia really really hated leading off.

FKRs win 4-1.

Geez, don't you guys want Henry and his child bride to be happy?

Of course if I really want to have a room by myself, all I have to do is put on my 666 cd.

Pepe Lepew said...

FKRs win 4-1.

Man, those guys just aren't going away.
They scare me more than the Yankees. Seriously.

allan said...

some zep shows its age for sure, some does not. we were listening to the radio b'cast last night and then had a riff from "the ocean" coming back in from commercials. they should have just played that over and over behind the entire game!!!

i am totally meh about the beatles, which you all know, but did they ever do anything worthwhile live?

there is lots of studio stuff out there from various beatles albums. though? did you miss my link to 12 CD of white album stuff?

i think there is an entire month of "let it be" stuff, like 80+ CDs worth! i may be fuzzy on that, but i don't think so.

Are they actually leading MLB in runs scored?

allan said...

FUCK -- kidney stone-esque pain for 5 seconds. OW that is not good.

maybe it is something else.

s1c said...

gets some outs will you

Amy said...

I do not recall any link to Beatles stuff. I would not expect it since I know you are not a fan, so perhaps I overlooked it.

I do not think there is anything decent from live concerts since mostly all you hear is girls (like me) screaming. (Actually, I was a weeper, not a screamer.) Supposedly, they hated doing concerts after a while because they realized no one could hear what they were playing.

johngoldfine said...

I feel your pain, rs. No fucking fun.

Benjamin said...

Uhhhh, maybe someone else should pitch.

Amy said...

Jesus, let's try and blow a nine run lead.

johngoldfine said...

The morphine part of kidney stones is pretty good.

:)

Pepe Lepew said...

Zep has a special place in my heart because it was the first rock concert I ever went to ... and it turns out it was their last show ever in North America.

Amy said...

You ok, Allan? Laura home yet?

Amy said...

Can we take him OUT? PLEASE?

Benjamin said...

Soooooo.... pull him.

nick said...

This is painful. Outs would be nice. just take him out now. ok thank you.

nick said...

just saw Allan's comment. I assume it wasn't about the game? crap.

L just called, headed home. Some strange story about when she left the bar with two other women from the resisters group, a guy came up to them out of the blue (i think) on the street and asked them with a dripping southern accent: "why do you hate america so much?"

i told her she MUST post about it tomorrow morning.

good play by FY, but what was Lugo doing? just watching, barely took a step towards the bag.

This is going to take awhile to re-read the thread. Had a shower and watched Top Gear. So now I'm back. Yay for two TVs!

One out, finally.

Pepe, when you are feeling better, we have to teach you how to use italics or at least quotation marks when you cut and paste others' comments. I keep getting confused!

I'm sorta computer disliterate....

Amy said...

Uhoh, Allan and Ish's mom.

I hope Laura isn't too far from home.

s1c said...

Tonight we have the classic example of how to make a 9 run lead into a save situation.

Geez fragging, get these outs

johngoldfine said...

Amy--I once tried teaching a student how to use italics in blogger--and explaining is hard since you can't use html....

allan said...

10-6 ... and we still have two innings of BP left.

Pepe Lepew said...

My mother just learned yesterday that she has kidney stones! In both kidneys!

Ow, I'm so sorry. I once many years ago had a *sheared* artery in a kidney. After falling down a flight a stairs (I think maybe I got these italics figgered out)

nick said...

I'm off to put emma to bed. I fully expect to find a reasonably healthy Allan and a W for the sox.

g'night.

Amy said...

John, people here taught me, so it can be done.

Amy said...

Nice work, Pepe!

Ish, is your mom still in the hospital? Is she doing any better?

johngoldfine said...

Amy--look how fast we taught pepe!

Amy said...

LOL, John!!

Amy said...

THis is so fucking ridiculous.

Amy said...

Allan, you still hanging in there?? I wish we had a way of helping you.

allan said...

how can 10 fucxking orioiles have batted this inning?

Rob said...

She's still in the hospital - tomorrow she goes to the O.R. to have something done. I say something because they're not sure if they can break up the pieces and be able to avoid cutting or other invasive and painful things. But she really doesn't care. Just wants it over with.

So that means both my parents have had kidney stones.

Makes me want to buy a couple of bottles of cranberry juice.

Amy said...

Allan still watching, still mad, but clearly in pain given the typos.

Benjamin said...

Finally.

Amy said...

Yeah, drink cranberry juice. Great stuff. I hope your mom feels better soon.

And Allan.

Pepe Lepew said...

Yeah, drink cranberry juice. Great stuff. I hope your mom feels better soon.

And Allan.

Ditto.

Amy said...

That 9 run lead and then the rain delay obviously made the bullpen way too laid back. Annoying. I would like to go to sleep and not have to worry about losing this game.

allan said...

it is not on my side, so i think i'm okay. it comes and goes, mostly goes. took some gas-x tablets or something.

however if we drop this one, i may jump off the roof.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Is this in italics?

I sure hope so.

allan said...

every time i get a stabbing pain in the general area, i get real worried. that was NOT a good day.

i totally understand the impulse to just get it over with, do whatever..

Amy said...

Yes, you did it, WCS!

Glad it is not too awful, Allan, though gas isn't usually that uncomfortable. But who knows?

SoSock said...

Damn, gotta love those rain delays - well, at least if you're a damn LL baseball addict like me. I finally get to catch part of a game - 1st time since last Wed. or Thur.
What up Allan, sounds like you're hurting up there.

Pepe Lepew said...

Is this in italics?

I sure hope so.

Sigh. Ok, I'm stooped.
And what is this "twitter" thing you kids today keep chirping about?

allan said...

nah, i'm okay. thanks though.

Pepe Lepew said...

nah, i'm okay. thanks though.

I don't think I've ever actually typed into a keyboard, "argggh, I'm in pain!"

Amy said...

Hi, SoSock. Sox were up 10-1 before the rain delay and have now given up 5 runs very quickly. Smoltz deprived of the win because of the rain delay.

So I think most of us are not too happy about the rain delay.

allan said...

time for lbj to jack another tater.

Benjamin said...

Bleh.

allan said...

it was only a comment.

i did not put up a post "my tummy hurts!"

YSE!!!!!!!!!!

fuck NO at the plate shitballs

SoSock said...

Rock-em, Sock-em Rocco!

Amy - I bought a McCartney live acoustic thing at the used book/music store a few weeks ago.
Pretty good, about half of the songs are really good, the other half are pretty much straight from the original. All-in-all, well worth the secondhand price, but glad I didn't pay 12 bucks.

johngoldfine said...

There really is nothing fun about kidney stones, alan, but, one thing for sure in my experience: there is never any doubt or questioning that the level of pain is outside of any do-it-yourself fix. You stand up (slowly) and say, "I need the ER.'

Rob said...

My laptop was installing updates and decided randomly it was time to say goodnight.

Amy said...

Stupid baserunning. Let's hope that four run lead holds. I mean, really, it should, but since they gave up five so easily, who knows?

Rob said...

John, my mother was in the mall looking for shoes in Sears when it hit her. We had to walk the full length of the mall to get to the car and she almost passed out twice. Thought it was a bowel obstruction.

And then of course, the traffic was terrible and the lights did not cooperate.

allan said...

if it was a steady pain that did not go away, and only got worse (like last time) i'd panic.

but this was like a quick stabbing pain, then it went away. ... though it has come back 2 or 3 times since then.

Amy said...

SoSock, a new release? Or something old? What is it called?

Benjamin said...

Feels like the most tenuous 4 run lead ever. So sad.

Pepe Lepew said...

it was only a comment.

i did not put up a post "my tummy hurts!"

It reminded me of the scene in "Monty Python's Search For the Holy Grail" in which King Arthur says, "Well, you wouldn't just carve 'Argggggh' into the wall."

SoSock said...

My laptop was installing updates and decided randomly it was time to say goodnight.

That shit bugs the crap out of me. You should get a warning or something.

Methinks young Ellsbury would like his job back, and is trying to make a case for himself.

johngoldfine said...

Ish--that took courage!

Amy said...

People say kidney stones are like labor pains. Most of the people I know who have had them are men. So maybe, Ish, your mom will know if that is really true.

Pepe Lepew said...

Rob said...

My dad's stone pain occured at 4 AM one morning. In intense pain and almost passed out. My mother drove him to the hospital. It was a good thing he had it because they did blood work and found out he had diabetes.

SoSock said...

Damn, could've used that run.

Allan, if this is stones I feel for you. I've never had them myself but have watched and helped my father get through it 5 or 6 times in the last 7 or 8 years.
He's a freaking tough guy, farm-raised, WWII vet, still in good shape at 85, but he was knocked down for the count by those things.

allan said...

what duh fuck, kot?

johngoldfine said...

Amy--the first time I was in the ER with the stones, I kept telling my wife, 'Oh yes, this is much much worse than labor, much, no doubt about it.' She didn't know whether to laugh or strangle me.

Pepe Lepew said...

Now, the tying run is at the plate!
Argggghhhhh!

SoSock said...

GDGD syas "in play, no outs" but no runs either.
Must have been an infield hit that they elected to eat. Or maybe an error?

Amy said...

Little dribbler in front of the plate that Kottaras picked up but never threw for an out. Guess he wasn't sure where to throw first.

SoSock said...

Oki - 5 hits and 1 out - OUCH!

johngoldfine said...

I was ready to bag zees then, amy. I wish I'd gone to bed then so I could read about this in the morning.

Pepe Lepew said...

Amy--the first time I was in the ER with the stones, I kept telling my wife, 'Oh yes, this is much much worse than labor, much, no doubt about it.' She didn't know whether to laugh or strangle me.

I finally went to the ER after my lower back, half my buttocks and my entire right thigh turned purple. And for about 36 hours, it was touch and go whether they could save my kidney.

s1c said...

Well, b-fly wants her computer back so see you guys later!!!

Amy said...

I am glad Laura is home. Now I can worry a little less about Allan and a lot more about the Sox.

johngoldfine said...

My god, Pepe--that's awful.

Amy said...

Yikes, Pepe.

Boy, are kidney stones that common? It seems like most of you guys have had some experience with them, either first or second hand.

That was not a kidney stone, that was a sheared artery in the kidney.
That was about 10 years ago, too.
