G103: Red Sox 4, Orioles 0

Red Sox - 100 012 000 - 4 13 0
Orioles - 000 000 000 - 0 8 0
Beckett (7-6-0-2-5, 107) and Kevin Youkilis (4-for-4, with a walk and dong) led the way to victory, with Josh Reddick collecting two doubles in his first major league start. Jason Bay and Jacoby Ellsbury each had two singles and LBJ stole his 48th base of the season.

Victor Martinez went only 1-for-5, but his sixth inning single drove in a run, and he later scored.

Dustin Pedroia clubbed a first-inning home run to give the Red Sox a quick 1-0 lead. Boston squandered plenty of chances to add to that lead, leaving the bases loaded in the second and fifth innings, and leaving two men on in the third, sixth, and ninth. Total LOB: 15.

However, Baltimore was equally inept at bringing in runners -- or Beckett and Hideki Okajima slammed the door in their faces. It's a matter of perspective. The Orioles had the first two batters on base in each of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, but could not score. Boston got double plays in each frame to keep the whitewash intact.

Daniel Bard pitched the ninth, retiring the side and striking out the final two Orioles on flithy curveballs. In his last 12 appearances, Bard has pitched 14 scoreless innings (two unearned runs) and has allowed four hits and no walks, while striking out 23 batters.

Bay left the game after five innings with a right hamstring cramp.

The Yankees were routed by the White Sox this afternoon 14-4, so the red Sox are only 0.5 GB.
Example
Josh Beckett (3.44, 136 ERA+) / David Hernandez (3.20, 143 ERA+)

Both Victor Martinez and Casey Kotchman are expected to be with the Red Sox for tonight's game in Baltimore.

Theo Epstein likes Martinez's versatility:
He can catch and give 'Tek a little bit of a rest behind the plate, and he can play first base and get some at-bats there. He can DH a little bit ... He provides some offensive support and some depth at the same time.
Terry Francona:
In getting Victor, we are getting a middle-of-the-order, switch-hitting bat that can catch, play first and DH. It's a very valuable piece.
Martinez is 30 years old; he will turn 31 two days before Christmas. This season, his hitting line of .284/.368/.464, 115 OPS+, gives him the 4th-best on-base, 4th best slugging and 3rd-best OPS+ on the team. However, his numbers have slipped every month this year:
          PA AVG OBP SLG OPS
Mar-Apr 101 .386 .446 .636 1.082
May 126 .321 .413 .468 .881
June 115 .240 .322 .480 .802
July 93 .175 .280 .250 .530
Clay Buchholz was happy to still be in a Red Sox uniform at the end of the day:
I was a little nervous, because I wasn't getting any feedback from anybody. It's a helpless feeling knowing you have no say in whatever goes on, to get here today and walk around not knowing what's going on. ... The organization is awesome. They've treated me about as good as a person could be treated.
Justin Masterson writes his final blog post for Comcast SportsNet.

4 PM: Yankees/White Sox.

I read the blog all the time, but might have missed one today. So much going on with all these crazy transactions.

"Steroids are amazing, aren't they."

That and he has one testicle. He's aerodynamic!

Amy said...

And I got 201.

laura k said...

I have to leave work soon. Score when I get home?

I'm going with 6-1.

Benjamin said...

L-girl, this would break your heart.

laura k said...

Amy, I'm just kidding, honest. Plus you missed last night's game. The new kids played.

allan said...

Josh Reddick, age 22

Rob said...

I'm going with 6-0!

Amy said...

SO WHO THE FUCK IS REDDICK??

Do I have to check the glossary?

Amy said...

Oops.OK going to check that link now.

laura k said...

OMG Benjamin. A bully boy too. Oh geez. Amy - Allan - don't click!

laura k said...

Does the dog need a home? Can we get him?

allan said...

And that is why you never use animal-words to describe humans. Humans are far, far crueler. Fuckin' christ.

laura k said...

Oops.

LOL

Benjamin said...

She seems to be doing ok under the circumstances.

Pepe Lepew said...

So ---
WHO THE HELL IS REDDICK?

He's the lead character of "Pitch Black."
A hell of a movie.

allan said...

too fuckin late. :<(

Iridescence said...

Gotta love those DPs

Amy said...

Oh, man, Benjamin, that story just ruined my buzz. Poor dog. Uch.

laura k said...

And that is why you never use animal-words to describe humans.

Right. Dogs - pigs - wolves - cows - all words used to negatively describe humans. All infinitely better than so many humans.

Pepe Lepew said...

His body is more like a machine than a human body, it seems.

Steroids are amazing, aren't they.

Umm, steroids don't do anything for cyclists. Their drugs of choice are EPO, CERA, synthetic testosterone ... and other people's blood.
Though Tyler Hamilton tested positive for steroids. Schmuck.

laura k said...

She seems to be doing ok under the circumstances.

Yes. A survivor. I hope she gets the home she deserves. I'd take her in a heartbeat.

I could hardly read it - I will have to go back later.

Benjamin said...

Yeah, guess I should think twice before linking something.

laura k said...

Umm, steroids don't do anything for cyclists.

A, I said I was kidding.

B, I disagree.

Do you also ignore the subsequent summer blockbuster? I try to. (Although it's not really that bad...)

Amy said...

The photo was enough for me. What the hell is wrong with the human race?

What I never will understand is how some people will go to all lengths to help an animal, and others will do unspeakable things to them. Are we so-called humans really all the same species?

laura k said...

Oh sorry, didn't realize you were being so precise, distinguishing between steroids and artificial testosterone, EPO, etc. Then, yes, not steroids.

/eye rolling.

laura k said...

Gotta go. Take care of all the puppies and Reddicks and drug-using cyclists. We'd better be a half-game out when I get home!

"Pitch Black" was much *much* better. I don't even remember the name of the sequel. Wasn't it called "Chronicles of Riddick?"

Amy said...

I can't wait to see this Reddick guy. 22. Damn.

Rob said...

Amy, earlier this month I saw him play at Hadlock for the Sea Dogs! Batting in front of Lars Anderson.

A Conformer said...

That's what I was trying to say. Pitch Black is one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen. Chronicles of Riddick is an over-special-FXed, one-linered blockbuster.

Pepe Lepew said...

I think he should be called "Vin Diesel" or "Diesel" from now on.

Amy said...

Wow, he was on the Seadogs that recently and is now "at the show," as they say. Or is it "in the show"?

Amy said...

BTW, I have no clue what the Pitch Black references are about.

Once again, showing my lack of cool. Or maybe my age. Whatever.

Benjamin said...

Reddick makes me think of Rellik from that ancient drivers' ed film.

allan said...

jeemer in - bard up

Rob said...

July 9th, I saw him at Hadlock. Ryan Kalish was batting behind him, not Anderson. Lars was probably batting cleanup.

"Pitch Black" is one of the coolest movies ever made.
Not the coolest. Just one of the coolest.

V-Mart- Masterson
Reddick- Mcbeth
Kotcham- Larouche
Kottaras-? who took his spot

Anonymous said...

This count is hanging like Dr. Crippen

allan said...

i know this is something old farts say and everyone gets sick of it, but holy shit - reddick was born about 6 weeks AFTER i moved to nyc.

A Conformer said...

11-pitch singles is where bad stuff starts.

allan said...

Dice got moved to the 60-day -- does that help?

A Conformer said...

But no worries- Oki's got it. I think.

Benjamin said...

Kottaras is just on the DL.

Pepe Lepew said...

Man, what an at-bat. Someone needs to tell Brian Roberts this game is over.

Amy said...

Reddick is younger than both my kids. Like I said, Damn.

Iridescence said...

"This count is hanging like Dr. Crippen"

Nice reference, kind of creepy but nice...

Amy said...

What is Kottaras' alleged injury? Martinez-itis?

A Conformer said...

V-Mart- Masterson
Reddick- Mcbeth
Kotcham- Larouche
Kottaras-? who took his spot

Mcbeth and Reddick came up for Laroche and Masterson. Then Mcbeth and Kottaras went down and to the DL for Kotchman and Martinez.

Benjamin said...

Lower back strain.

Pepe Lepew said...

Oh, c'mon guys, quit screwing around...

A Conformer said...

What is Kottaras' alleged injury? Martinez-itis?

Post-trade-deadline depression.

allan said...

now a huff gidp and we're good.

Amy said...

Yes!

allan said...

HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob said...

HOLY SHIT! We get out of THREE first-and-second, 0 out jams in a ROW without giving up a run or loading the bases! And a DP in each of those three innings!

Benjamin said...

He's taking the Masterson departure very hard.

Pepe Lepew said...

That was quick. Yayyyy! A half-game out.

A Conformer said...

He's taking the Masterson departure very hard.

And the fact that the Sox just traded for his replac... oh, shit, maybe we shouldn't say that? Would that make it too obvious?

Amy said...

Hmm, lower back problems. All of a sudden? Seems weird to me. Does this mean Martinez is catching for Wake?

Iridescence said...

The Schadenfreude post should be *awesome* must-reading tomorrow if the Sox hold this lead :)

A Conformer said...

I'm smelling an Rbieddick here. That kinda looks like a norwegian name.

allan said...

tabs could go with the mets just to annoy us, though.

A Conformer said...

They might wait a bit with Wake's unDLing.

Iridescence said...

DR" You know you're looking at a last place team and obviously they've got a good club...." WTF?

Benjamin said...

"Danys" is still an absurd name.

Rob said...

Brian Bass.

All fish team! All food team! All musical team!

allan said...

he cannot say anything bad about anybody -- which is not a good trait for an analyst.

Benjamin said...

Allan, you raise a very good point. You know.

allan said...

well you know hitler had some differences with you know the jews but he loved dogs and i think you know he enjoyed a good book and always tipped his you know paper boy so i think he was alright you know

allan said...

wow - scoring on that will be like a phone number.

Benjamin said...

Thanks, Lowrie. Wouldn't want to leave Tek a place to end up.

Anonymous said...

How bizzare was that??

A Conformer said...

Baltimore is not such a bad team. Next year they might be dangerous... great outfield, Wieters is supposed to be the second coming of someone, they've got some good young arms... They're just in the wrong division. They would probably be over 500 in any other.

Benjamin said...

Hitler put the biggest death camps in Poland. That's just smart genocide there.

Iridescence said...

Would be fine if he said samething like "despite that fact they're a last place team they're a good club" but "obviously"? Feel sorry for him, he seems like a nice guy and probably pretty intelligent but not really cut out for the booth.

allan said...

i like seeing reddick, lowrie, ellsbury and pedroia in a row in the lineup -- with bard out in the pen. youth!

allan said...

3-2-5-3-7-1

and tek is annoyed that he got tagged too hard???

allan said...

fuckin' curve!!!!

Plus, his art doesn't get fair treatment, in my opinion, just because of his mass murdering. I think he's a pretty good painter.

Reddick gets a pie to the face. What are we, the MFYs?

A Conformer said...

That's 11 apps and 13 innings with no ER for Bard. No walks, either. And 21 Ks.

Yep, I think he's good.

A Conformer said...

Reddick gets a pie to the face. What are we, the MFYs?

I thought all teams do that. No?

A win to unpack by!
Just now getting into home. What a week.
A night in Fenway with the JoS, a day in Boston, a day in Cperstown, a night in Times Square, a day in NYC (where Chris had never been before), a night in Atlantic City, then finally a long drive home today.

SoSock said...

Bard = Tarheel :)

SoSock said...

Found my way down to Professor Thom's yesterday, but no Quinn.
Guess that wuld have been too much to ask :)

9casey said...

Rice just said , Reddick has the best arm in the Red Sox system since Dwight Evans....

Amy said...

Wow, SoSock, what a great trip it must have been.

I was so happy to meet you. I looked to say goodbye, but you were not to be seen. I felt badly.

allan said...

In his last 12 appearances, Bard has pitched 14 scoreless innings (two unearned runs) and has allowed only four hits and no walks, while striking out 23 batters.

Amy said...

Good night, everyone. Nice to be just a half game back.

A Conformer said...

Just realised I didn't count tonight's game in Bard's stats...

SoSock said...

Amy, if you're still around -
I hoped to say goodbye to you as well, but I had to wait for Chris who has trouble going down steps. By the time we caught up to L & A, and Ish also, you had taken your leave. I trust it will not be the last time we meet :)
Off to the showers!
Driving so long makes one Youkish :(

laura k said...

Yay, .5 GB! Catching up on the thread here, hilarious hitlerisms.

Amy, if it's any help, I didn't get the Pitch Black references. I'm not convinced this is lack of cool.

SoSock, what an awesome trip you had!! I'm happy for you. I hope it was all ok for Chris, that he had fun too.
