G132: Rays 8, Red Sox 5

Red Sox - 010 200 110 - 5 6 1
Rays - 131 000 03x - 8 12 0
Beckett (6-7-5-0-9, 104) continued with his uncanny John Smoltz impersonation. Beckett did retire ten of his last 11 batters, but he had dug his teammates a 5-1 hole by then.

They clawed back, though. In the fourth, Victor Martinez walked, Kevin Youkilis doubled, David Ortiz grounded out (5-2) J.D. Drew singled (5-3). In the seventh, Alex Gonzalez doubled and Martinez singled him home (5-4).

A trio of Tampa pitchers gave the Red Sox the tying run in the eighth. There were 33 pitches thrown in the inning, but none of them were put into play by Boston batters. Three walks loaded the bases and a wild pitch brought in the run that knotted the score at 5-5.

And only five pitches into the home half of the eighth, Tampa had regained a three-run lead. Ramon Ramirez, who had pitched a perfect seventh, allowed a double to Carlos Pena and an RBI single to Pat Burrell. Manny Delcarmen came in and his first pitch was crushed to deep left by Evan Longoria.

Martinez drew a one-out walk in the ninth, but Boston went quietly.

(At one point, five consecutive Boston batters were pitched to by five different Tampa relievers:
Garza - Martinez RBI single in 7th
Bradford - Youkilis F9 to end 7th
Choate - Ortiz BB to start 8th
Springer - Bay K, Gathright PR/SB
Balfour - Drew BB, Kotchman BB
Howell - WP, Gonzalez K, Ellsbury K to end 8th
The Yankees beat the Orioles 10-2 (with a seven-run top of the 9th) and the Rangers beat the Blue Jays 6-4. Boston is now 7.5 GB in the East and 2.5 GA in the Wild Card.
Example
Josh Beckett (3.80, 125 ERA+) / Matt Garza (3.95, 116 ERA+)

Dear Josh: You have a 9.82 ERA in your last three starts. In those games, 18.1 innings of work, you have allowed 10 home runs and opponents have a 1.106 OPS. This is completely unacceptable. If you are not hurt, as everyone insists, then kindly get your head out of your ass at once and start pitching properly. Thank you.

Also: Yankees/Orioles at 7 and Blue Jays/Rangers at 8.

he looks a bit like former jays manager john gibbons. not as similar as shatner is to the o's mgr, but i saw it sometimes.

L-girl said...

I wonder how far we'd get in the manager lookalike team. Shatner as Tremblay, Joe Pesci as Joe Torre...

scott said...

i love the ranger's pitching coach's beard/stache combo, it's amazing. (that's the only thing i like about them though)

BJs are becoming more useless by the minute.

they used 7 relievers last night, they must be getting winded c'mon boys time to throw a heartbreaker their way

I just realized what you guys were talking about re Jim Breuer. I don't know him from SNL (I stopped watching long before he got there) but he was in a funny movie called Half Baked, a silly stoner flick.

That pizza ad is disgusting tho.

A Conformer said...

Come on baby, light my fire.

L-girl said...

All the birds are letting us down.

redsock said...

Grant Ball Four.

P.A. Tito is IN THE FUCKIN' HOUSE!!!

L-girl said...

Yeah, Playoff Assassin Tito gives us a cactus-free AB.

Kevin said...

Fire on Base

Kotch Rocket pinch hitting!

Amy said...

Pulling Tek = good move.

Wow, that hurts to admit it.

A Conformer said...

Is Kotch better at avoiding the DP, or something? Or is it because he's a lefty?

Kevin said...

Good not to go with Lowell

I love the guy, but we all know he'd probably GIDP

Mrs.GotRibe said...

I'd much rather see Lowell here, even with the right/left thing.

They don't call him Grant Ball Four for nothing.

scott said...

tim said...

Wow, this motherfucker is granting ball fours all over the place.

A Conformer said...

We must win tonight. And we will.

As good as seabass has been, I dunno. But he'll probably hit.

scott said...

L-girl said...

I'm good with the Bass hitting here.

tim said...

Nick Green, wtf?

Figured they would've kept Casey in to play 1st and moved Victor to C.

Damn expanded rosters.

scott said...

i would love to see a run walked in here maybe 3 runs

tim said...

Show some life here seabass. Ugh.

L-girl said...

Oh fuck this, don't get called out.

Kevin said...

HAHAHAHA!!!!!

tim said...

Ok that was shit. Fuck you seabass.

L-girl said...

How bout a nice triple here, Lyndon?

tim said...

I'd settle for an inside-the-park job.

Edward Lee said...

Surprise drag bunt for a hit?

tim said...

Fucked up strike zone this guy has.

redsock said...

zorro gettin' annoyed?

Benjamin said...

Fucknuts.

Amy said...

Damn. Well, at least we are tied.

Kevin said...

Well, at least it's tied

tim said...

Fucking shitfucks.

Oh well, good guys coming up in the 9th. Should be able to squeeze a nifty dong out of FY/V-Mart/Yook.

L-girl said...

Oh fuck. But we're tied, and that's good.

redsock said...

33 pitches that inning -- and the sox put NONE of them into play.

scott said...

i cant be mad at sebass, he's hitting better than i thought he would and it's nice to have him in the field for sure

A Conformer said...

So who we got? Bard, Oki, MDC and Saito? I don't know if I wanna see Oki here...

redsock said...

so

vmart to c
yook to 1b
green to 3b?

A Conformer said...

Oh, Ram Ram still in. Makes sense.

scott said...

is it bad that i think kottarres is a hitting upgrade over vtek ?

L-girl said...

Any hits we get from Gonzo are a bonus. He's been out performing expectations, I think.

redsock said...

or canadian kottaras at c!

tim said...

I wish. We get fucking kottaras.

Kevin said...

A Conformer said...

Green pinch running is a complete mystery.

A Conformer said...

Man, this game looked good for a second...

Mrs.GotRibe said...

Kevin said...

Oh, and it's 10-2 MFY now

scott said...

oh come on, they're playing the smallville song somebody saaaave meeee i bet mdc was singing it in his head already

tim said...

I'm glad the 300 or so fans are enjoying themselves.

Kevin said...

Didn't I just say yesterday that we have a bullpen made of seven closers? I'd like to know when they were replaced by batting practice pitchers.

L-girl said...

Well, we knew Baltimore was losing that one, doesn't really matter how much they lose by.

SoSock said...

We apparently brought the pigpen instead of the bullpen tonight

scott said...

good time to start banging their cowbells around i guess? however the hell that makes sense

Kevin said...

Saito finally up.

tim said...

I'm thinking about going the ol' Varitek route for this game - praising/blaming the catcher for the results of the pitcher's pitches.

Fucking Kottaras. Fuck you.

redsock said...

mdc is missing bats NOW.

L-girl said...

I gotta get my eyes away from the computer. See you all... I don't know when! Not sure if we'll be in any threads while we're away. Here's to a healthy WC lead when we return.

tim said...

Good thing you guys don't have the Tampa feed tonight.

Your TVs speakers would blow out as a result of massive boners popping.

tim said...

Alright have fun, L! Enjoy and relax!

redsock said...

mute > tampa annc.

Kevin said...

Delcarmen since July 28: 15.1 IP, 11 ER

He shouldn't be pitching in critical situations right now

tim said...

Fuck you ZORRO

scott said...

sounds like mdc's pitching about as well as beckett (though he did look good last few innings)

Kevin said...

Thank you gods of shitty baserunning

tim said...

That was definitely safe. Oh well! Too bad for you, douchebags!

A Conformer said...

Bay could've caught that, but he wanted the outfield assist instead.

tim said...

Tito,

Here is the plan:
Pedey - dong
V-Mart - dong
Youk - dong

If you have any other ideas on how to score three runs before we get three outs, then let me know and go for it.

Thanks and see you at the winners' circle.

-Tim

Benjamin said...

So instead of playoff assassin Tito, tonight we get barnyard door Tito.

tim said...

GABE GROSS LOOKS GROSS
GABE GROSS PLAYS GROSS
GABE GROSS IS GROSS

Amy said...

I say we go for the two out rally.

tim said...

Freewheelin' Dan Wheeler up. Let's make sure he comes in to attempt to save what will surely be a loss.

Kevin said...

I'd prefer a one-out rally

tim said...

Any rally will do me. Any rally scoring 3+ that is.

Kevin said...

I imagine Lowell hits for Gathright

tim said...

Good stuff.

Kevin said...

Base on Blue Balls

scott said...

wheeler? i smell runs

redsock said...

must. use. entire. pen. every. night.

Kevin said...

MFY and Texas win

redsock said...

it's getting harder to believe in winning the east if we are 7.5 out.

Kevin said...

Or Baldelli

He's been great as a pinch hitter this season

A Conformer said...

it's getting harder to believe in winning the east if we are 7.5 out.

I'm just about off that bandwagon.

tim said...

Fuckin shit.

Welp, there goes $10.

A Conformer said...

I blame Lugo.

Benjamin said...

Oh hey, look, Francona remembered he can pinch hit Lowell. But in the 9th.

Amy said...

What a frustrating game...

Clean water, and the wild card more and more looks like our option for baseball in October.

Kevin said...

UGH

Fucking Clean Water

tim said...

Yankees are gonna win 4 more now. Got the corpse jays coming into the toilet tomorrow thru sun.

Fuck.

Kevin said...

"I blame Lugo."

I second the motion to blame Lugo

SoSock said...

damn

tim said...

Priority A: Playing in October.
Priority B: Beating NY.

B will become A in October. And in September, B is a prereq for A to occur.

tim said...

Ugh. Looking at the remainder of the Yankees schedule, my *conservative* estimate is that they lose 10 games (go 19-10 for the rest of the year and end with 104 wins). They have a fairly easy schedule with 6 games against Toronto, 3 against KC, 3 against Baltimore. They'll probably win most of those, and if they go 3-3 on their west coast trip, we sweep them and they play .500 ball against Tampa, well, theres your 19-10 record.

In order for us to reach 105 wins, we need 28 more. We have 30 games remaining.

...

Fuck.

Iridescence said...

Sorry I missed the thread last night but I just want to comment on the dumb decision not to pinch hit Lowell for Seabass in the 8th. Can anyone explain any half sensible baseball rationale for that decision? I like Tito as a manager on the whole but sometimes he does the dumbest shit

Oh well we still have a decent lead in the WC but it sucks when the manager doesn't makes the clearly optimal moves to give best chance of winning the game.
