G64: Red Sox 10, Phillies 2

Phillies - 020 000 000 - 2 7 0
Red Sox - 053 101 00x - 10 16 0
Daniel Nava hit a grand slam into the Red Sox bullpen on the first pitch in his first major league plate appearance!

Nava is the fourth player in history to hit a grand slam in the first at-bat of his major league career. The only other player to do it on the first pitch is Kevin Kouzmanoff of the Padres, who went deep on September 2, 2006.

Rip Repulski is the only other Red Sox player to hit a grand slam in his first plate appearance with the team (May 10, 1960 against the White Sox). ... Matsuzaka was placed on the disabled list shortly before the game with a right forearm strain. Atchison gets the start -- and left-handed reliever Dustin Richardson is on his way from Pawtucket.
Example
Joe Blanton / Daisuke Matsuzaka Scott Atchison
Scutaro, SS Pedroia, 2B Ortiz, DH Youkilis, 1B Drew, RF Beltre, 3B Varitek, C McDonald, CF Nava, LF [MLB debut]
The Red Sox are expected to call up Daniel Nava, a 27-year-old switch-hitting outfielder, for today's game. [And they do.] Josh Reddick was optioned to Pawtucket last night. Nava is batting .294/.364/.492 for Pawtucket this season. Mike Andrews of Sox Prospects calls Nava "one of the best offensive players in the system over the last three seasons, regularly surpassing expectations at every turn". He has been a few years older than his competition at each level, though. Andrews has a good Q&A with Nava here. And:
Astros/Yankees, 1 PM Marlins/Rays, 7 PM Blue Jays/Rockies, 8 PM
Example
Baseball Reference lists June 12, 2001 as the day Gary Sheffield of the Dodgers became the first player in MLB history to hit a solo home run in a 1-0 game three times in a single season, but it should be included on May 12: April 2 (Opening Day) vs Milwaukee, May 7 vs Florida, May 12 (bottom of the 9th) vs Atlanta.

Word is Nava will make his major league debut today, playing LF and batting 9th.

(He is not the first Nava to play major league baseball, though. Sandy Nava played 1882-86. But that guy was born Irwin Sandy, went by Vincent P. Nava and was nicknamed Sandy. So is he a true Nava? ... Sandy Nava was not a good hitter. He had a -13 OPS+ one season, slugging .095 in 34 games.)

Pawtucket radio broadcaster Steve Hyder, May 8, 2010:

The last couple of days in Charlotte, I've left tickets for friends. The procedure is to go down to the clubhouse and sign the sheet. You include the name of your guest, the number of tickets needed and your name. Being the investigative journalist that I am, I noticed that one of our players had left a ticket for a young woman, a famous young woman both days here in the Carolinas. The player - Daniel Nava. The woman - Erin Andrews of ESPN ...

Nava laughed when he was asked if he knew her. "I wish I did." He explained that it is a long standing tradition of his, dating back a couple of seasons. He got the idea from a certain Dallas Cowboys quarterback. "Tony Romo used to put Jessica Simpsons' name down, even though he didn't know her at the time. Word got out and for a while, Romo and Simpson were an item." Is Nava hoping for lightning to strike twice. "I'm not counting on it, but it'd be great."

I asked what it would mean to him if Hyder and Hoard were able to spread the word and make something happen. "I'd owe you guys, big time, I guess." While he's not holding his breath that anything will happen, you just never know.

Whats funny about Scutaro , I watched a move on NESN about minor leaguers must have been made in the late 90's , but Scutaro was a big part of it , and when they reffered to him or when they used game footage ..They always caled him Scu-TAR-o....

9casey said...

Either I'm blind or Nava isn't even ranked a "top prospect"?

Either I'm blind or Nava isn't even ranked a "top prospect"?

Too old, I suspect.

allan said...

Nava -- not you (or your failing eyesight)!

laura k said...

ScuTARo? He is related to David ORtiz?

Jays announcers always called him Scutaro. They adored him. Then again, who don't they adore.

Does Nava's father work for U-Haul?

mattymatty said...

Atchison on the mound, and Dice-K to the DL. Um, WTF!?!?

laura k said...

I can't believe Dice-K is on the DL. He had a few good starts, so I suppose he can't be in the rotation for long, the way this season is going.

laura k said...

Does Nava's father work for U-Haul?

Took me a minute!

allan said...

Dice to the DL?

Beltre!!!! (/"newman")

mattymatty said...

They're going to somehow get 9 innings from the pen today, and then do some crazy roster maneuvering tomorrow.

allan said...

Globe: "Daisuke Matsuzaka has gone on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain. Matsuzaka must have informed the team quite late of his injury."

I'd say so.

mattymatty said...

According to GameDay the ump missed 2 calls in the Werth at-bat.

allan said...

Stop the presses! :>)

allan said...

i turn on fox for 5 fucking seconds and hear mccarver start in: "you know that sinatra song, ridin' high in april, shot down in may ... well ortiz is the opposite blah blah blah... home runs ... blah blah"

Patrick said...

Ef you Daisuke. This is your fault.

allan said...

Manuel had his #7 hitter bunt with no one out in the second inning of a game in which the Red Sox have to use their pen for all 9 innings?

Good god, what a moron.

mattymatty said...

To channel McCarver, Manuel ain't the brightest bulb in the picnic basket.

allan said...

ON FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mattymatty said...

McCarver was actually arguing against the bunt because the pitcher's spot was coming up. Hey moron, this Boston, an AL city. We use the DH.

s1c said...

ON FIRE!!!

mattymatty said...

JD!

And now Beltre! Lets go SOX!

allan said...

I heard the word "pitcher" but I had no idea what he was saying, my volume is way down.

TEK = GENIUS!!!!

allan said...

Bases loaded for your first MLB AB!

allan said...

McMoron: Bogar wisely held Beltre at third.

laura k said...

OMG HE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

OMG HOLY FUCKIONGS HIT!!!!!!!!!!\\

Benjamin said...

Holy shit, Nava.

allan said...

THE NAVA ERA HAS BEGUN!

Kathryn said...

Look at Youk! Too sweet.

s1c said...

Welcome to the majors NAVA!

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

HOLY HOLY HOLY SARDINES!!!!

mattymatty said...

WOOOOOOW!!!!

mattymatty said...

Castig called it

allan said...

First pitch he sees in the bigs - Grand Slam!!!

Erin's gotta be callin' tonight ...

laura k said...

So he's the first person to ever hit a grand slam in his first ML AB?! First pitch too!

allan said...

rosenthal says nava was cut by the independent league chico outlaws, took a year off, and then chico gave him another shot at making the team the following year.

mccarver: "CHICO gave him another chance and now TITO has given him another chance ..."

i want to kill that man ...

laura k said...

If we win a game when Atchison is making an emergency start, it will be very cool. A gift, really.

laura k said...

Nope, it happened one other time. Nava is 2nd.

allan said...

i have a feeling the fans in left field are going to go a bit nuts during the next half-inning!!!

allan said...

Tito, before the game: "I told him it will be the most exciting day of his life."

allan said...

SoSHer notes that Atchison didn't start warming up until 15 minutes before the game. A Twitter search suggests no journalists knew about it until 3:55pm.

laura k said...

So cool that Castig called it on the pregame. They just replayed it: "Good luck today, hit that first one out." "Thank you, I'll try."

allan said...

who was the first?

laura k said...

I didn't catch it.

allan said...

I think three other players hit a HR in their first MLB PA this year.

Starlin Castro
Luke Hughes
Jason Heyward

Benjamin said...

It's a good thing the long-man in an AL East club is like a third starter in the senior circuit.

Kathryn said...

Fox is reporting that he is the second player to hit a grand slam in his first Red Sox appearance, stating that the other is Rip Pepulski. I looked into that. Actually, it's Rip Repulski and it was not his first ML at bat. He entered the league in 1953.

I can't imagine there is anyone else who hit a grand slam on their first pitch in the majors!

Benjamin said...

For "Take a Swing at Prostate Cancer" they should let people take turns beating Joe West in the groin with a bat.

Rob said...

Tony Francona...

allan said...

Looking at B-Ref for players with 1 HR and at least 4 RBI in their 1st career game, I found that Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a first-pitch GS in his first PA!!

September 2, 2006, for Cleveland -- at Texas.

allan said...

again? why not ?

Kathryn said...

Wow. I don't know what is more impressive, hitting a GS on your first pitch or Allan's quick find.

s1c said...

can lightening strike twice?

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

DO IT AGAIN NAVA!

Kathryn said...

Now, I guarantee that there is no one who hit two grand slams in their first two pitches.

allan said...

called strike? a ball?

BOOOOOOOOOOOOO

take the bat off your shoulder!!

allan said...

fox just showed nava's father videoing the AB.

allan said...

BUM!!!!!

Kathryn said...

What a bum. Who called *him* up?

allan said...

K with the sacks full.

Another lump of coal from Theo the Idiot.

Kathryn said...

fox just showed nava's father videoing the AB.

I think Ken Rosenthal was sitting beside him. I guess we'll get an interview soon.

s1c said...

Scoot, scoot, scoot!!!

allan said...

Here is the search I did for 1st game/1 HR/4 RBI players. This is 1920-now.

laura k said...

Great that his parents are in the stands. I love the fans booing his K in his 2nd AB. Cute.

laura k said...

I think three other players hit a HR in their first MLB PA this year.

Didn't Hermida?

allan said...

Hermida did, but not this year.

A Conformer said...

Afternoon.
Man, I sure do wish the Sox would have a better offense, eh?
Makes the fact that Atchison is the starter a bit less worrisome. What's up with Daisuke?

allan said...

I cannot see how to search for a player's first AB, so you have to click on the red PAs on that BR link to get a summary.

laura k said...

Oh right. Castig read off all the Sox players who donged in their first sox AB, a pretty long list. He sounded a bit like Don with all the dates and whatnot.

laura k said...

Hi Ofer. Were you listening earlier? Nava AB?

Kathryn said...

Nick Cafardo says Dice hurt his forearm during warmups.

laura k said...

And they put him on the DL immediately. I wonder if there's something going on.

Kathryn said...

That is strange, immediately to the DL.

A Conformer said...

Nope, I was watching the postgame of the US-England game (World cup? Soccer? Anyone?). I'm watching on Fox right now- first game on a larger-than-10-inch screen this season.

A Conformer said...

So will this be one of those "ump chooses who deserves the win" games? (Assuming of course the Phillies don't mount a big unlikely comeback).

laura k said...

Daniel Nava, first ML AB, hits a grand slam ON THE FIRST PITCH. Crazy.

laura k said...

Mrs G might be your only World Cup company on this thread. I know Joe Grav was excited about it, but he's not here.

allan said...

SoSH

Sprowl:
I think forearm strain is a pretty good explanation for why we saw so few slurves in his Cleveland start. And yeah, on the DL right away sounds like TJ in DM's future.

Buzzkill Pauley
Yeah, I was worried about that when I looked at his mix of pitches last start. Seriously, I hope for the best but expect to see him next year.

A Conformer said...

Yeah, I sure wish I was watching when that happened. That's insane. I hope they show a replay when he comes up to bat next.

allan said...

drew needs a triple.

laura k said...

JD a triple away from the cycle

s1c said...

ON FIRE!!! and the runs keep on coming!

laura k said...

Ofer, his 2nd AB he came up with the bases loaded again! He took the 1st pitch and the crowd boo'd. :)

Amy said...

OMG, what have I missed!!

Maddy is AT this game---she has sent me texts and photos but no details.

Amy said...

Nava hit a GS on his first at bat! Where can he go from there??

allan said...

nava's father says he was jumping around after the GS so much he may have filmed the woman's hair in front of him more than his son trotting around the bases!!!

Amy said...

And DiceK on the DL? Uh oh, I really did curse the guy. :(

Kathryn said...

Ofer, I switched over shortly after the World Cup game. I was debating on whether to watch the postgame or switch to the Sox. I'm glad I changed the channel.

Amy said...

I think that his dad can get other films of the GS! Better to be in the moment.

laura k said...

Amy, not only his first AB - the first pitch he saw in the majors!

Amy said...

Wow, he won't sleep tonight!

Amy said...

What happened on the second AB (after he did not swing at the first pitch)?

laura k said...

K looking, people jokingly boo'd

s1c said...

B-fly - "I really hate the Fox announcers".

Good genes in that kid

s1c said...

Actually - checked swing, called out by the ump.

laura k said...

Hey s1c, haven't seen you here in ages. You must be enjoying your empty nest. :)

Amy said...

Yes, S1C, you taught her well.

laura k said...

of course I haven't been threading lately either, so you may have been here and I didn't see you

s1c said...

Was off for a while L-girl. Been a little crazy here since b-fly came home. Haven't had time to thread except a couple of games.

Zenslinger said...

I get up from a nap just in time to see that Nava was up with the bases loaded for a second time. I assume no one has ever hit two Grand Slams in their first two ABs. Then I realized I could turn the game on my regular TV. How cool!

I knew England and the US were tied at 1. But I was able to nap -- it's a rare summer day in San Francisco, hot and sunny -- without hearing a bunch of screams from the Bar, so I assumed England had gone well ahead. But we hung in there for tie; that's cool.

Dice to the DL is not so cool.

Amy said...

How was her freshman year, S1C?

allan said...

Good genes in that kid

I'm sure there are, but that comment merely shows that her IQ is more than 10.

Kathryn said...

Nava asked Tito before his at bat, "Where are my folks sitting?"

Francona: "I don't care, go get a hit."

s1c said...

Amy - good 4.0 and 1 credit shy of being a junior. Not bad for her first year.

Amy said...

So Atchison started, and MDC came in during the fourth?

Amy said...

WOW---that's amazing, S1C! How did she get so many credits? This is Marist, right?

laura k said...

Bfly an impressive young woman! Very cool (and unsurprising).

Kathryn said...

Francona says they put Dice-K on the DL not because they needed to medically, but because they needed a roster spot today.

Amy said...

How old is Nava?

laura k said...

Thx Mrs G, I hope that's true.

laura k said...

Nava is 27. Was cut from college team, has been playing in an independ league.

Amy said...

Thanks, Laura. I just heard the Fox guys say that he was so small as a kid that his parents put him on growth hormones.

allan said...

4-10, 70 lbs when he started high school -- ???

seems like a morgan burkhart kind of story - scrap heap guy that can hit

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Just ran a half-marathon in SF. Zenslinger understates it - not just hot and sunny, but REALLY hot and sunny. 81 degrees by 10 am.

Great to see Nava get the Grand Slam on his first pitch. I'm sure I'll see later here on this blog how many times that has been done!

But can Nava pitch?

Have to go run errands, and listen to the Red Sox radio crew on XM.

Amy said...

Holy shit! Is this guy really this good?

laura k said...

If WCSox reads this thread, he'll already know the answer to that, several times. :)

Zenslinger said...

Francona says they put Dice-K on the DL not because they needed to medically, but because they needed a roster spot today.

And I thought I could sense the annoyance that this was necessary. Terry tried not to appear to throw him under the bus.

allan said...

Stockton keeps mentioning the slam in Nava's first AB, but never says it was also the first pitch! Or maybe he did it once, but ignoring that part of it is bizarre. Maybe his mind is slipping.

laura k said...

Amy, extremely small sample size.

A Conformer said...

Nava again! I hope he goes and thanks Beltre later...

allan said...

No. Not on the Red Sox Top 40 prospects list. He will fill in as 4th/5th OF.

allan said...

he should stay the F away from beltre.

laura k said...

Everyone should!

allan said...

Hermida hit a pinch-hit grand slam in his major league AB on August 31, 2005. 1-1 count.

allan said...

McMoron: "Gamer". That is the proudest word in baseball. And Dustin Pedroia is a "gamer".

Amy said...

OK, I won't get my hopes up.

Maddy says it is pouring at Fenway. Also, she missed the GS... :(

laura k said...

Amazing that Castig said that to him while wrapping up the pregame - "Hit the first one out". He also said, "We'll see you on the post-game". !!!

OB says they are going to Vegas or Foxwoods.

s1c said...

Amy had a lot of credits going into Marist - Honors program in high School. Took 1 extra class each semester.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

OK, OK, I see now. He's the second, to Kevin Kousmanoff? Who was a late-season call-up, I assume. He's the first non-late season call up player to hit a grand slam on his first pitch!

Gotta go.

laura k said...

As long as it's an official game, they can pack it in.

allan said...

I would imagine saying "hit the first one out" would be pretty standard to say to a guy about to make his debut. Plus Castig really strikes me as a guy that would do it every time.

Like when Tito said he didn't care if HH threw a no-hitter in his first start, he was going back to AAA. (HH saved the no-no for start #2!)

laura k said...

August 31, 2005

Big day

laura k said...

No way he does that every time. He says he's never said that to anyone before - too much pressure.

Amy said...

Yeah, I just said to Maddy they may call the game early. She is underneath where the TVs are now. She did not bring an umbrella, silly girl.

allan said...

Bobby Bonds had a GS in his 3rd PA in his 1st game, June 25, 1968.

Kathryn said...

Mike Andrews of Sox Prospects calls Nava "one of the best offensive players in the system over the last three seasons, regularly surpassing expectations at every turn".

I'd say he has today.

Amy said...

That's great, S1C---AP credits, I assume?

Amy said...

Time for Manny bashing on Fox. Arggh.

allan said...

CHB is hard at work on a column that it is all downhill for Nava and he will never fulfill the promise of his debut -- and we are dumb fans to have any faith in him.

laura k said...

They are talking about multi-GS games for RS players. That Bill Mueller game is huge for me - it's the time of my conversion.

allan said...

Amy: Just hit the moot button, myself.

laura k said...

Very important to stay away from sports media as much as possible for the next week or so. It will be crawling with MUMS.

A Conformer said...

Oh, shit, MUMS-alert. Man, next Sunday will be fucking MUMS-a-palooza on Fox.

Ian Browne:

Nava became the second player in Red Sox history to hit a grand slam in his first plate appearance with the team and first since Rip Repulski on May 10, 1960, against the White Sox.

Nava is only the fourth player to hit a grand slam in his first Major League at-bat, and first since Kevin Kouzmanoff did it for the Padres on Sept. 2, 2006.

Nava is the 10th player in the history of the Red Sox to go deep in his first plate appearance with the club, and second this season. Darnell McDonald also did so April 20 against the Rangers.

laura k said...

Clarification: Nava is 2nd player to hit GS on 1st ML pitch, 4th to hit one on his 1st ML AB.

allan said...

List of all players to HR in 1st MLB AB here. (So are any of these guys who maybe walked in his first PA and thus still not have a AB in the majors when they donged?)

A Conformer said...

Man, comparing Nava to Strasburg is as ridiculous as they come.

I agree---call the game. I have to get ready for dinner. Let's stop playing in mud before someone gets hurt.

A Conformer said...

Yeah, Fox morons. Comparing the most hyped prospect in recent history having a 7 IP, 14 K start to a relative unknown guy coming from nowhere and hitting a GS in his first at bat. That's a bad comparison on so many levels...

NAVA NAVA WOOO!

Was checking boxscore on phone earlier and determined that he hit the grand slam on his first AB - sweet!

Loving this dominance of the Phillies.

Zenslinger said...

JJ Putz has been targeted as a possible trade target for the Red Sox. He just pitched a scoreless inning to bring his WHIP down to .92 and ERA to 2.49. So he he'd be a great addition, but wouldn't come cheap! Has a 1 year $3m deal.

laura k said...

shift this!

Amy said...

OK, I am off to dinner. I am feeling reasonably confident that our lead is safe regardless of who pitches the next two innings.

PAPI!

laura k said...

Tim, first pitch!

I know now, I see that in this post! Sweeeet.

Ugh, all the straps on my knapsack are completely destroyed. Give Winston a kong and nope, would rather chew apart the plastic pieces of my knapsack.
