The Alcantara Institute For Conflict Resolution

On this date in 2001, Pawtucket's Izzy Alcantara got annoyed at a second brushback pitch from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitcher Blas Cedeño, so he kicked catcher Jeremy Salazar and charged the mound.

(Some background on the incident here.)

Izzy played a total of 35 games with the Red Sox in 2000 and 2001 and 16 more with the Brewers in 2002.

Other July 3 stuff:

1906 - Cleveland beats the Tigers 5-0 in game called after six innings on account of rain. Detroit outfielder Germany Schaefer plays the last few innings wearing a raincoat over his uniform.

1909 - The Cardinals commit 17 errors in a doubleheader loss to the Reds, 10-2 and 13-7, tying a modern ML record.

1913 - The Red Sox get 15 hits off Washington's Walter Johnson, but lose 1-0 in 15 innings. It's the most hits by a team in a shutout.

1951 - Bill DiBenedetto of the Class D Hornell Dodgers issues 21 walks in a 5-1 loss to Corning. (There are rumours Daisuke Matsuzaka had a DiBenedetto poster on his wall as a child.)

1983 - The Rangers set a record for most runs scored in an extra inning when they get 12 in the 15th and beat the A's 16-4.

Nice work by the announcer: "a bench-clearing... heated discussion."
