Salty Signs For 2011; McDonald Has Surgery

Jarrod Saltalamacchia, 25, avoided salary arbitration and signed a one-year, non-guaranteed contract for 2011. ESPN reports: "The contract will pay him $750,000 in the major leagues and $250,000 in the minors."

Three players are still eligible for arbitration: Jacoby Ellsbury, Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon.

Darnell McDonald had surgery on a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb on Wednesday. McDonald suffered the injury during spring training in 2010 and played with it all year. It did not bother him, however, so the team's medical staff did not find out about it until his end-of-year physical. The Microwave should be ready for spring training.

I'm very interested to see how the arb with Oki and Papelbon shake out.

Couldn't the Red Sox have consulted me before signing Salty? I'm not looking forward to having to squeeze "Saltalamacchia" into my scorecard all next season. "Garciaparra" was bad enough.
