Buchholz Needs Time and Rest; Lowrie Starts Rehab

Michael Silverman and Dan Duggan, Herald:
In June, small stress fractures in Buchholz' back were discovered. The stress fractures were pre-existing and, since they were not near the lower back area where the pitcher was experiencing discomfort, they were determined to be unrelated to the strain. Buchholz essentially did no throwing after late June and his back symptoms were showing improvement, until after a July 25 bullpen session. Another scan was performed, and it revealed a brand-new stress fracture.

The team will release an official statement about Buchholz' condition and his upcoming rehab program today. ...

Stress fractures do not require surgery. Instead, time and rest are required for full healing.
Time and rest? ... That's the cue to start the media bullshit machine, isn't it?

Jed Lowrie went 0-for-2 for Pawtucket in the first game of his rehab assignment. He played three innings at shortstop; he grounded out to first and lined out to second. Lowrie will DH tonight, work out with the Red Sox on Wednesday, and play for Pawtucket Thursday and Friday.

Tim Wakefield is 45 years old today.
Example
Bill Dwyre, Los Angeles Times ("Derek Jeter is a player to be celebrated"):
... [T]his magnificent Yankee. ... Impressive beyond words. ... [T]hanks for being what you are and who you are.

In that magic early afternoon of July 9 ... Jeter went from legendary to mystical. ... The number [3,000 hits] reached was phenomenal. The manner done so was otherworldly. ... Most everything else good about Jeter is intangible — and positive. ... He is good to his teammates, good to the fans and apparently good to the scores of beautiful women he has dated ...

It has been three weeks since Jeter's record-breaking day, but we don't have to let it go quite yet. ... Television can turn the most compelling moments into overdone drivel, or it can get us inside to the magic. ["Derek Jeter 3K"] did the latter.

One interview said it all. Billy Crystal, lifelong Yankees fan, says, "It’s kind of amazing to think he is the first Yankee to get 3,000 hits, 'cause you'll think, oh, DiMaggio must have done it. No, Mantle, but no, Gehrig, no, Ruth, no."

No, only Derek Jeter, the only Yankee. If that isn't a jolt of perspective ...

I assume the red sox knew for some time that Double H had a fractured back , but didn't want to seem to desperate at the trade deadline, so they kept it quiet until yesterday. Smart I quess, but would I rather have Erik Bedard over Wake,Miller, or Aceves , I have no idea.....

I'm pretty sure this isn't about Derek Jeter. It's about the media deification of Derek Jeter.

He's had a great career. In his prime, he was a very good hitter. He is not "mystical", "phenomenal" or "otherworldly".

I'm always going on about Sox fans' irrational hatred of Derek Jeter. But come on, 9C, you can read that shit Allan quoted and not need a barf bag? More power to you, I sure can't.

lol, I hear ya L, ya know it's weird, in a world now where people feel as though they need negativity to sell papers and advertising, every now and then a puff piece is allright.

And who knows Derek Jeter may shit strawberry ice cream...

I am glad you posted the Jeter blog since I happened to watch the HBO show last night.

I am not a Jeter hater. In fact I have a lot of respect for the guy (especially back in the day).

But that HBO show is unbelievable crap. It makes the Dwyer article look fairly objective. As it got closer to his 3K hit, "he alone had the power to bring the city together"... He couldn't have done it without his family and the fans of the Yankees... He is just a down to earth guy that hangs out with his friends who - they make a point of highlighting - are of all different races and genders.

It reminded me of The Babe Ruth Story starring William Bendix - it was so cliche-riddled and fawning it became laughable.

At this moment, Hood is trying to think of ways to package this for the NY market.
