Manager Interviews Could Start Next Week

John Henry posted three tweets yesterday about the search for a new manager.
Another productive day this week at Fenway. Tom, Larry and I were briefed by Theo and Ben [Cherington] on the managerial search. Due diligence this week.

Calls and maybe interviews next week. Excited to once again bring in smart, creative, hands-on leadership. We have the right people looking.

We got the manager's search right eight years ago with Tito and Maddon as finalists. We'll secure a great manager this time as well.
One possible candidate is Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin (who was "flattered" and hopes for an interview). Three other bench coaches - Dave Martinez (Rays), Sandy Alomar Jr. (Cleveland), Tony Pena (Yankees) - have also been discussed.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the Cubs have officially asked to speak to Theo Epstein about joining their front office. ... Kevin Youkilis had surgery yesterday to repair his sports hernia. ... Third baseman Will Middlebrooks leads a group of eight Red Sox prospects playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League. More info here and here.

Daisuke Matsuzaka made 39 throws from "short range" in Fort Myers yesterday, his first activity since having surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. "I was relieved because my elbow didn't hurt at all." 2012 is the final year of Dice's Red Sox contract.

Terry Francona will be calling the first two games of the ALCS on Fox, beginning Saturday night.

Francona confirmed the news, which was first reported by CSNNE and WEEI.

No doubt something was lost in translation, but no doubt Dice will be "relieved" many many more times before we see the last of him.
