G57: Red Sox 11, Yankees 1

Red Sox - 005 000 033 - 11 18 0
Yankees - 000 100 000 - 1 6 0
Mike Napoli (3-for-5) hit a grand slam and Daniel Nava (4-for-6) added a three-run bomb as Boston humiliated New York. Nava tied a career high with his four hits.

Doubront (6-6-1-3-6, 103) rebounded after a rough first two innings in which he walked three and threw 49 pitches. Although he retired the Yankees in order only once (in the fifth), he was much more economical with his pitches (26-23-11 15-16-12).

The Red Sox battered Hughes (4.1-7-5-2-7, 100) in the third. Jackie Bradley (3-for-5) doubled to left-center and Nava dumped a single in front of the amazingly life-like statue of Vernon Wells in left. Mike Carp doubled on a ball that landed on the chalk line near the left field corner (again, out of Wells's limited range) to bring JBJ home. After Dustin Pedroia struck out, David Ortiz was walked intentionally. Joe Girardi's move backfired in a big way as Napoli poled a 2-2 pitch to right-center for a four-run dong.

In the eighth, after Jose Iglesias and Bradley both singled off Adam Warren (who threw 70 pitches in relief), Nava crushed a high fastball to right-center, his 8th home run of the season.

Stephen Drew hit a solo shot with one down in the ninth. Jarrod Saltalamacchia followed with a double and scored on Iglesias's single. Bradley sliced a double into the left field corner. Iglesias scored Boston's final run on Nava's groundout to shortstop.

The Yankees were spared a drop into third place because the Orioles lost.

Boston (33-23) has a one-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East. The Orioles (1.5 GB) and Rays (2 GB) are close behind.

Jacoby Ellsbury (left groin tightness) is day-to-day. He has reached base in 24 of his last 46 plate appearances dating back to May 21, a .522 on-base percentage.

Returns: Shane Victorino is expected to be activated on Wednesday. Will Middlebrooks is eligible to come off the disabled list next Saturday.
